Christianity Etc › Questions To All The YEC In The House. by mazaje(op): 7:09pm On Dec 08, 2009
This goes to all the YEC in the house (OLAADEGBU, No2Atheism) Since you guys love using science to support your various theories that the universe is 6000 years old, I will love to see your scientific method of dating that shows that the earth and the universe are both 6000 years old.  Science has provided objective and credible method to prove that the earth/ the universe is much more than 6000 years old, since you guys disagree with the scientific method for dating the earth and the results it has shown, what credible scientific methods do you guys have to show that the earth and the universe are 6000 years old?

Why is the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe wrong?
majaze if you take time to go through my previous cut and pasted articles, you'll find the answers to most of your questions there.
I understand what you were trying to explain but I find it unacceptable because those events happened when there were no humans present on earth as written in the various articles. . .You were trying to be scientific by providing scientific answers but why accept the scientific process only when it fits your own theory and position with regards to the mechanism and way of transport and discard the dates because it does not fit your own theory? Why accept the theory of Pangaea or continental drif as the mechanism responsible for the movement of animals from present day Turkey to their various locations all over the world but refuse to accept the date that was theorized for the occurance of the said events? I do not accept expalanations because continental drifts and Pangaea were theorized to have happened about 250 million years ago while the Noah's flood is said to have happened just 4500 years ago. . . .

I pasted them for a reason. They are scientific articles detailing the earth's history.

Ignore this time frame issue since it will only derail this particular thread.
And according to those articles there were no humans on earth when some of the events occured. . .

I'm assuming this is a genuine thread and not just a Christianity bashfest as usual.
The tittle of the thread is Biodiversity And Species Distribution, How Does It Fit With The Flood Neotic?
Christianity Etc › Re: Religions, Humanity & Tyranny by mazaje(m): 6:12pm On Dec 08, 2009
Krayola:
Greed, weapons, lust for power . . .those are things that I think lend themselves to be easily used as tools of tyranny. Maybe if u can give me a specific example of how religion is used as a tool of tyranny then we can analyse that.
The present day Islamic countries and the pre-scientific and pre-democratic Europe during the dark ages. . . .

Now, u will probably go back in history and state the crimes of the Roman empire and the Old testament, and The Islamic conquests and all of that. But the problem, IMO, is that religion was the only world view then, so everything was seen and defined in religious terms. It wouldn't matter what was happening, it would have been understood in religious terms. And in cultures where deities were not central to their religious lives we still see the same tendency for tyranny. I'm not sure but I doubt Genghis Khan claimed he was doing anything for God. So human behaviour, our vices, our tendency to want to dominate each other has been consistent through human history. Even in the era of science and secular societies. Some people are just tyrants
How do you know that religion was the ONLY world view then? The proponents of religion who were tyrants did not tolerate dissenting views and supressed them completely, they did not allow any form of dissent because they knew that religion was good for them. . . . Religion only appers to be the only world view because other world views were squashed without mercy. . . .The present day religious leaders in western cultures are always crying because they feel that people have way too much freedom and their religious world views are being relegated to the abyss of history. . .

Culture is a very complicated thing. there is a tendency to impose our own ideas of what is acceptable onto other cultures. People in the west like to look at the Arab world and call them oppressive, but we do not understand their culture. Before Islam, women in the Arab world had it much much much much worse. The prophet Mohammed improved conditions for them like a million fold (exaggeration is allowed. Na my birthday yestaday  grin ). Another example of how Religion can do good.
Religion has done a lot of good, to say other wise is to not know what you are ta;lking about or to be outrightly silly. . . .But the problem is that tyranny and oppression have on so many cases gone hand in hand with religion. . . . .A prefect example is the present day Nigheria. . . .Nigeria presently is dying because of religion, the division and tyranny that it expouses. . . . .

It's all about how u choose to see it. Because all their doctrines have at their heart peace, justice, tolerance etc. Now, people with "evil" ambition can read things into the texts and use them for all types of stuff (e.g. the extremist interpretation of Jihad).
This is VERY false the doctorines of most religion is mainly for the peaceful existence with those that agree with their worldview, you will read in their various scriptures where it says that people should live peacefully with other men, but such statements are later contradicted with other statements where unbelievers are called or tagged   as condemned enemies, worthless people, wrong doers, evil people, pigs, animals, doomed people that will never have it good, bad people that do no good etc, the believer reads this and assumes its true because it is written in his holy book, hence he treats the unbelievers according to the pronouncement of his religious document. . . .Christians can not build churches in the middle east today. . . If not for democracy that has kept the christian religion in check in western countrie hindus would not be allowed to build their hindu shrines in the western countries. . . .I was in Bayelsa state the last time I visited Nigeria and a small moslem(hausa) community where I visited were finding it a lil difficult to eret a mosque because the people there were not welcoming and just didn't like the Idea of a mosque in their area. . . .Democracy is what is keeping the western nations in check if not their religious level of intolerance will be there for all to see. . . .

I'm not saying religion can not, and has not been used as a tool for tyranny. But u are overstating it, and distorting reality. Most religious people are peaceful, and without religion we will still have crazy power hungry tyrants. I don't remember IBB, or Abacha, or even Yar Adua invoking god. . .meanwhile na dem worse pass.
I will just assume that you are kidding right? Yar'adua was busy invoking allah in his last television appearance I watched on TV. . . . .IBB, Abacha all invoked god. . . .The best way to invade another country is to say that god told you to do it as George Bush did when he was about to invade Iraq. . . .Most religious people are peaceful because they have no other choice. . .They can not all do what their various religions teach them because they know exactly what will happen so they just have to embrace peace. . . . .

That is a distinct possibility.
There is evidence for that in all the religious text of the Abrahamic religions. . . .Afterall  if you have god's blessing, slaughtering another tribe of humans for their land isn't immoral, it's good, cause god says so. Tyrants us these as a means to justify their cruel acts as tribal leaders. . . . . .  Afterall, if you have god's blessing, slaughtering another tribe of humans for their land or property isn't immoral at all, it's good, cause god says so and god only uses the tyrants(Prophets and leaders) to deliver such messges. Case in point the bible and the koran. . . . .

You may be right in some of your assertions, but the sad truth is that the negative effects of religion as a tool of tyranny is vastly more influential in our lives than it's positive effects.

The question i ask is this, "why do religions even lend themselves to be easily used as tools of tyranny at all?Are they not supposed to function as tools of spiritual growth for humanity alone? Why is the resistance to tyranny by religions so low? That is the question that intrigues and that needs to be answered.Religious ideologies are just too close to tyranny for comfort. The very gods worshipped by religions(especially the three abrahamic desert dogmas) are epitomes of tyrants. Why is that?
Perharps Tyrants created them. . . .
I'm saying the world during Noah's time wasnt the same as we know it today.

The continents were most likely not the same as now. The tropics, north and south poles were interchangeable.
Do you have any scientific evidence to show that the continents were not the same as we have them about 5000 years ago(during the time of Noah)?

If the earth only had one supercontinent at different periods, then that provides a land bridge for animals and humans to migrate over time. Continents drift constantly- the movement is just so slow as to be unnoticeable.
The early earth scientifically ia about billions of years old not 4500 or 5000 years old. . . . .So this point is moot. . .

Besides, in the food chain, animals depend on different types of plant life. So its not too far fetched to wonder if plants getting localised to one region, would eventually cause animals to also move there. And vice versa.
How did the Mountain Lions of North American move from Turkey to North America? How did the incests found in the Amazon move from Turkey to the Amazon? What did they eat on the way?

For your polar bear analogy- algae/plankton determine fish concentrations and maybe type. Polar bears will follow the fish to somewhere where they can conveniently catch them. Habitat, etc.
Are you trying to tell me that the polar bear swam all the way from Turkey to Its present location?

And dont ignore man's contribution either- he takes different animals along wherever he goes.
There are a lot of species living on islands and caves void of any human. . . .

No2Atheism:
In terms of Physical Evil:
---------------------------------------

- There is something called Free-will amongst human beings.
This is false the word free will does not appear in the bible and the bible actually negates the free will argument. . . .the god of the bible does not give humans a choice.  According to the bible, everything you do and will do, from birth to death, is already known to the biblegod and written down in his book before you were born.

"your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:16

- The argument is easily defeated by the fact that they themselves "have the free will to question The Creator". : ITS SEEMS PEOPLE DO NOT EVEN REALISE THAT IF THERE WAS NO FREE WILL IN HUMANS, THEY THEMSELVES WOULD NOT EVEN BE IN A POSITION TO EVEN ASK THAT KIND OF QUESTION.
The bible does not talk about people having the free will to choose anything. . . .there are verses that say that Christians were chosen before they were born. . . . Read some of Paul's letter where he talks about predestination. . .

- If The Creator wanted Robots He could have created us (Humans) without free-will. How we choose to excercise the free-will is ours alone to determine.
False again because Nothing like that exist in the bible. . . If the bible is true and if humanity actually had freedom of choice, then there would be the risk that the prophecies espoused in the bible could be negated by humans choosing differently than what that god would need them to do in order to fulfill the prophecies if they posses free will. . . . . .In fact, every single moment of your day is completely and totally controlled by god according to the hypothesis, to follow precisely that which is already known to him. . . . . You have absolutely no choice in anything whatsoever because god according to the hypothesis already knows everything.  You will get up when god already knows you to get up, you will wear what god already knows you will wear, you will run over that specific cat that god already knows you will run over.  You cannot swerve your car to avoid it, because god already knows you will kill that cat, years before you were even born according to the bible so where did the free will argument come from?

Carried, Jesoul. And thanks for shedding some light on why you think so.

Indeed, the format of my posts, and either diction, give me away as almost the very same person as pilgrim.1. I was initially put off and tended to react in an unfriendly manner when Nairalanders were teasing me about this, but these days I tend to not bother any more and just take it all as a joke.

In the course of all this, I tried to look up a few threads where pilgrim.1 made some posts - and astonishing it was to find many similarities in format, especially on threads discussing tithing.

Another thing, though, I found that she was not very forthcoming when asked about her denomination; on a few occasions where people have asked me about mine, I have wasted no time replying that I'm a Baptist.

Is she polite? I don't know - but one of my first entries to Nairaland should show that viaro wastes no time to blasts discussants who trouble him (not that I feel great doing so anyway).

So, indeed, the similarities are 'cloned', if I may say so. But does that make me into pilgrim.1?  cheesy

noetic15:
you should be familiar with my position on evolution by now. I am more interested in how the original life formed before it began diversifying. Evolution claims that this is from non-organic substances which is false. . . .but lets put this aside.
OK. . . . .

You do not deny the presence of these plants in the ship. . . . all I did was to ask what u though Noah did with them once he was out of the ark?
Like u rightly pointed out, .God's plan was to repopulate the earth. . but I disagree that God re-created plants. That we may not have the answers does not rule out the possibility of the obvious.
I don't deny the presence of plants on the ship even though the story does not mention the presence of plants on the ship. According to the story a dove was sent to go and see if the water had subsided and the dove came back with a fresh olive leaf in her beak implying that there were plants that survived the flood. . . . .Why do you disagree that God re-created the plants?

I am afraid that the above assertions from your "geologists" are FALSE. one does not require the knowledge of rocket science to decipher how elements as huge as rootless polystrate fossils could find themselves at the other end of the world. . .in an ageless form. u dont have to dismiss the facts to suit your notions. the fact is that there are rootless polystrate fossils in australia who could only have been there through a global flood.
Local flood yes but global flood? There is no evidence for that at all. . . .A local flood could be responsible for their formation so there is no need to assume that it must be a global flood. . . .

u miss the whole point mazaje.

1. u make an assumption that the earth was as developed as this 45oo years ago. that explains why u would consider it impossible for a kangaroo to find its way to australia without having a private jet. Nope. . .the earth without the somplexities and ancient civilizations can best be described as an open field.
The natural instincts of adaptation and the urge to survive coupled with no restriction in mobility (since there was no life on the planet) is enough basis to explain the redistribution of these animals.

what do u think the state of the earth was after the flood and after the land had dried. the habitual nature of the earth would be the same all over the earth. . that all animals survived is a miracle science calls ADAPTATION
Personally I am more interested in the mechanism and I was anticipating to see which mechanism you will provide as to how the animals moved around to their current location. You talked about the natural instincts of adaptation and the urge to survive coupled with no restriction in mobility with out stating how exactly the process would have worked out. As an experiment, we could take a random sample of organisms from the Amazon, or the Australian outback, or the African Serengeti and move them to a swampy plain, void of any life (which is how conditions after the flood would have been). And then we will try to see how well they will survive. My guess is that the herbivores would starve, in the absence of plants, but even if there are plants available, The carnivores would start out eating the herbivores, The carnivores will eventually run out of food and starve as well. Depending on the location we chose for the experiment, the cold blooded animals would have a hard time maintaining their internal body temperature and would die out. . . . . Chances are, it would be too hot for some and too cold for others. Ectotherms are very sensitive to temperature changes. So based on these difficulties I believe that you simplistic assertions are not credible and convincing enough. . . .

U can dispute the fact that the flood water could not have transported the inhabitants of the ark (for which u are right) but u cannot dispute the fact that it could have transported "other" substances like the polystrate fossils.
u would notice that I did not lay emphasis on it, I simply drew your attention to it.
Ok lets assume that the flood waters truly formed the polystrate fossils. That explanation is quite understandable and can be agreed by any body familiar with the topic, The problem how ever is the process with which all the animals left Turkey to their present day location. But then there’s the second part of the problem, even if the animals can get from point X to point Y, why point Z? Why not A or B or C? This is what I was getting at in the first post. The kangaroo would probably do just as well in the African Serengeti as it does in the Austrialian Outback. So why is the kangaroo, and most of the other marsupials, in Australia? Why aren’t there any grizzly bears in northern Europe? Why don’t we see Galapagos tortoises living on most tropical islands instead of just the Galapagos?
