I'll choose Ed Miliband over GEJ a thousand times over. By the way i am a Christian. |
By Segun Balogun October 5, 2010 03:20AM print email Mohammadu Buhari’s record as a military head of state will perpetually render him unelectable because Nigerians will never desire a repeat of such administration, said Nasir El-Rufai, former FCT Minister. Reacting to statements made by the Mohammadu Buhari’s party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), regarding the advice he gave the retired army general to retire from politics, Mr. El-Rufai, in a statement on Monday, said age is certainly a factor in the coming presidential election since Ibrahim Babangida has already defamed young Nigerians as unfit for national leadership. “While it is true that neither youth nor age supplies wisdom on their own, it makes sense to ask those who have been recurring decimals in our country’s sorry history to leave the stage. I’m amazed that General Buhari cannot debate this matter without scurrying to the gutter, making claims that are baseless and unsupported by any facts,” said Mr. El-Rufai, describing Mr. Buhari’s leadership style as parochial and insensitive to Nigeria’s diverse background. He asked whether “the failure [of Mr. Buhari and Mr. Babangida] to do their best for Nigeria when they had the chance qualifies them for a return to office. Our people surely deserve better.” He was obviously irked by the claims made by CPC regarding his administration as a federal minister, describing them as fictitious and prejudicial. “Despite the difficult decisions that had to be taken to restore Abuja, Mallam El-Rufai continues to receive deserved praise and recognition for his achievements in restoring the Abuja master plan, introducing Nigeria’s first computerised land registry, and helping thousands of Nigerians achieve their dreams of home ownership in the federal capital,” the statement said. A reminder “In 1984, Buhari allowed 53 suitcases belonging to his ADC’s father, to enter Nigeria unchecked, at a time the country was exchanging old currency for new. Against all canons of legal decency, he used retroactive laws to execute three young men for drug-peddling after they were convicted by a military tribunal, and not regular courts of law. “Buhari was so high handed that he gave himself and his officials immunity, even from truthful reporting. That obnoxious Decree 4, against which truth was no defence, was used to jail journalists and attempt to cow the media as a whole. That tyrannical legislation shows the essence of his intolerance. These are facts of recent history,” the statement said. A new mindset Mr. El-Rufai said it will take more than slander to become electable in 2011 because Nigerians will rather cherish an intellectual discourse about their daily problems. While saying he still respects both Buhari and Babangida as elder statesmen, he emphasised his belief that their age, experience, and guidance are best used to contribute to the success of any future government. Mr. Buhari, according to him, is not the kind of leader that can move the country forward because “now is the time for a new generation of leaders with new thinking and wholesome democratic attitude. “The vicious response by the Buhari camp to a simple statement that their almost-70 principal should retire, is proof enough that a Buhari, the new Democrat, tolerant of views different from his own, is yet to evolve. And that is sad, for his fledgling party and its leadership,” the statement said. |
i don't believe Dokpesi has been released until Beaf confirms it. Beaf kindly confirm that the high chief has been released by your people asked to go and sin no more? |
MaziUche0:Because they can. |
MaziUche0:because they did it, i guess, |
Basseti:Dokpesi and IBB are so amateurish that they could not even get bombers with a little brain? the bombers could not send an SMS without mentioning the high chief by name? is this some sick joke? |
Ibime:I saw the the text messages higher up in the thread and i thought it was a joke. Seeing it on NEXT, i realise that this would have been a very funny joke if it was not a serious matter. Are IBB and Dokpesi this dumb? when there are muslim fundamentalists willing to blow themselves up with intended targets and meet fresh virgins in paradise. These text messages have put me off the whole story.I will only return when the final scene is being shot. |
Less than 24 hours after Goodluck Jonathan announced that the nation’s security forces were closing-in on the sponsors of the Friday’s twin bombings in Abuja, there are indications that the Director of the Ibrahim Babanginda Campaign Organisation; Raymond Dokpesi may have been arrested in connection with the bomb blast that almost marred the Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. NEXT gathered that he may have been picked up in the early hours of today, following a text message sent to the smartphone of one of the suspects in police custody asking “if Dokpesi has paid the balance” and another “inviting another suspect to a meeting at IBB Campaign office.” It was learnt that the alleged arrest of Mr Dokpesi may be one of the nine people already arrested by the State Security Service, who at the briefing yesterday had refused to mention the names of those in its custody for security reasons. |
By Terfa Tilley Gyado Amaka (not real name), a 27-year-old woman was one of the victims of the struggle, which ensued when some residents of Abuja jostled for bags of rice donated to the indigent by wife of the Nigerian president, Patience Jonathan as part of the independence anniversary celebration. The single mother of a two-year-old girl had gone to work, at the spot where she runs a phone call business at Garki Area 10, when she heard there was a jamboree of free rice where anyone could have a bag or more depending on what your strength could carry. The rice hand out was taking place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, but Ms Amaka lost her life in the process. According to the younger sister of the deceased, Amaka had already successfully carried a bag of rice to her shop when she noticed there was an avenue to still carry more. So, she went back to try her luck and met her death. She was hit by one of the trucks which was offloading the rice. "When I came back from work that day, they said they were sharing bags of rice and she went with her friend, she came back with the first one and they still said they should go and she did," the sister said. "According to what I was told, she had already carried the second bag and she was sitting on it, she sat on the bag and the truck that they were removing the rice from was trying to reverse and the thing just finished her. Before they took her to the hospital, she died." The friend with which the deceased went on the mission confirmed that they had already picked a bag of rice and wanted to try out another bag before the accident occurred. "Amaka had gone for another bag of rice so that she could send one to mama in the village and keep one here at home for us to eat, since we are three staying together," the sister said. Poor coordination She, however, does blame the driver of the truck that hit her sister. But she also thinks poor coordination led to the stampede. "I think the fault is not from the driver, people said the police there were just rushing and hitting people anyhow," she said. "They shouldn't have done it like that, they should have taken it to the motherless babies' home. That doesn't mean anything and nobody is hungry. University students are there. That would have been better than telling people to climb and carry for themselves. Some carried and carried again up to six times". Ms Amaka, whose corpse is to be transferred to the village today, was taken to the Aso villa clinic's morgue, where her family was offered N100,000 to assist in the burial cost. NEXT learnt that the nine trucks of rice which was distributed were freely donated by billionaire, Alike Dangote as his contribution to Nigeria's Golden Jubilee celebration. A taxi driver, who gave his name as Ikechukwu, told NEXT of how he had collapsed trying to get a bag of rice. "It was a carry by yourself if you fit," he said. "I climbed plenty times, but as I go dey come down people go just push me down carry the bag. The last one wey I say make I try again, na so dem march me for ground with the rice, I de pray say if God just save me, I no go near the truck sef again. I blacked out na so dem come dey pour me water until I wake up." He thinks it should have been better if the organisers had brought more security people who should have forced the people to queue up and collect the rice. "I appreciate wetin the madam been try to do, na good thing to give people food, we get plenty hungry people for Nigeria. But she for do am for different small groups," he said. |
after his ineptitude and looting in ebonyi state (and the man is a church leader o!), he was rewarded with a ministerial position. how we love to celebrate mediocrity. |

The Holland coach, Bert van Marwijk, has dropped Nigel de Jong from his squad after the Manchester City midfielder was involved in a tackle that left the Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa with a broken left leg. Van Marwijk said he saw "no alternative" but to remove De Jong from his squad to play Moldova and Sweden in the upcoming Euro 2010 qualifiers. Ben Arfa was injured in a robust challenge by De Jong in the third minute of yesterday's match, which City won 2-1. Newcastle said x-rays confirmed that the Frenchman had suffered a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg and would undergo surgery this morning. "I've seen the pictures back," Van Marwijk added in the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper. "It was a wild and unnecessary offence. He went in much too hard. It is unfortunate, especially since he does not need to do it. "The funny thing is that the referee did not even show a yellow card for it. Apparently, there are other standards. But I have a problem with the way Nigel needlessly looks to push the limit. I am going to speak to him." It is not the first time De Jong has come under the microscope for his aggressive play, having caused the Bolton Wanderers and United States midfielder Stuart Holden a fractured right fibula on international duty in March and then got away with a chest-high challenge on Spain's Xabi Alonso in the World Cup final. |
^^^^ Chairman, try reply my mail for the other side now. I beg. |
i am late to this party but we need to agree on the indices of measuring development first of all. Is it infrastructure, GDP, poverty level, democracy, urbanization etc. which one. |

AjanleKoko:No mind Indians and this there half baked lies. crappy over populated place. |
I must have missed something. If MEND is not responsible, why is Okah appearing in court today? In yesterday's Thisday, Timi Alaibe pointedly accused Okah of being behind the attacks. Have Mend sacked Okah? On a second note why the hasty statement discounting some suspects of being involved? Are our security agencies this efficient that they have already informed the president that ND militants are not involved? To be so certain, they must know who specifically is involved? Why did MEND accept responsibility and apologise to victims? I will appreciate answers to this. |
he has never been any different. good for clubbing when you have had a few bittles and are less interested in music but beats. he does not sing anything that anyone beyond adolescence will listen to after a hangover. |
I thought MEND was fighting for the rights of the ND? Why are they complaining now? bomb them all. fire burn all the barbarians. |
Not getting a replacement for Heagreves and an able understudy for Scholes is the biggest mistake this year. |
tkb417:No one outside knows the truth about Ljajic. unfortunately, we can only speculate. SAF saw him at close quarters and backed out. No need comparing him to Bebe.his was a one off kind of signing (SAF never saw him play either in flesh or on tv). we just have to believe that there is something about Ljajic that is not good enough. Tosic had his chance and blew it.no rocket science there. when it comes to this signings, you've got to remember that hindsight is an easy degree to acquire. on the second bold part, i tried calling UEFA a while ago but 'network busy' ![]() so we've got to show up. don't worry, it won't be too bad. |

wonderful article. i need to go over it again. the truth of the matter is that we get the government we deserve and it does not seem like changing any time soon. not with these GEJ charade going on in town. No accountability,no checks.the barbarians just keep running wild and we keep praying in churches and mosques for God's deliverance. sycophancy begets mediocrity and mediocrity begets the present day Nigeria. there is no short cut about it. |
crispgg:very valid points. I agree with you completely. |
The match against Valencia at the Mestalla on Wednesday looks to have turned into an even more severe test after yesterday's 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers todaywas accompanied by a number of injury concerns for Sir Alex Ferguson. Ryan Giggs strained a hamstring at the Reebok Stadium that will rule him out for a fortnight. Rio Ferdinand, who was not involved in the match, may well return but there is no certainty over a centre-half with back-related problems whose appearances are now intermittent and Wayne Rooney is also a worry. The injury that saw him replaced at Bolton was more than a random knock, even though the attacker is expected to face Valencia. "He has a little issue with his ankle," said United's assistant manager, Mike Phelan, who said it would be examined tomorrow morning. "He has been playing with it for a couple of weeks now and we decided he wasn't getting into the areas we wanted and he wasn't getting chances, so we had to change it." A point against Bolton was satisfactory since United were twice behind and by drawing had a better weekend than the other Champions League representatives, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs, who were all defeated. However, it is Ferguson's men who are under the greater stress on the European front after the 0-0 draw with Rangers in their opening game. Ferguson did, however, see some encouraging signs at the Reebok. "In the first half we should have done better but we did well to come from behind," he said. "The second half was very even. Bolton were a real handful and our chances were reduced but we must take credit for coming back again." The second of United's levellers was expertly taken by the substitute Michael Owen for his first league goal of the season. It brings him more strongly into contention to be in the starting line-up against Valencia but his satisfaction after the Bolton game was qualified. He claimed his goal was "tinged with a bit of disappointment" and rued the fact that United had only partly exploited their opportunity. "We were helped with a few nice results [on Saturday]," said Owen, "but when you don't capitalise fully it is disappointing." Underachievement by United is partly linked to Rooney's subdued form, although sympathy for him is diminishing. As Kevin Keegan – one of the match analysts at the Reebok – remarked, a person who reportedly sold his wedding photographs to the press cannot complain too much if newspapers then carry other pictures that are not to Rooney's liking. United have more orthodox concerns. It is irksome for the club, too, that they have drawn all three away Premier League matches to date, even if they had no lead to let slip at the Reebok. Such difficulties for a leading club are, however, heartening for the Bolton manager, Owen Coyle. "I certainly wasn't surprised that West Ham could win at home [against Tottenham] and I wasn't surprised we could achieve a result," he said. "The margins for error in the Premier League are minimal. It's probably been great for the league this week that a lot of teams have believed they could win against the elite clubs. That's the way it should be." Coyle was particularly pleased by Martin Petrov's display and goal and was also philosophical about Johan Elmander's failure to put Bolton 3-1 ahead. "That chance would have never have come had he not driven 40 or 50 yards and beaten three or four men," said Coyle. There was even sympathy for Rooney from Coyle. "I think maybe it's time to lay off him and let him play his football if you want the best for your country." |

tkb417: tkb417:like i always so to you, this thing is complicated (although in my lay view, not as complicated as Sir Alex is making it look). most in importantly, there is no abundance of cash like there was in the recent past. Fergie and Gill are liars if they say there is money to spend. 2ndly, the Evans case is complicated.CBs do not become very good until they are in their mid, late twenties. You may mention a few exceptions but even those exceptions are down to the playing pattern of the teams in question (Pique, i am looking at you). If we sell or loan him now (he already spend 2 years at Sunderland), he will only get better down the line and all the training he has gotten this far will be wasted. He just has to improve his aggression and concentration and these will come with time. Also, if you get a top of the range defender now, how do you incoporate Rio? a top of the range defender will not play bit role and spend time on the bench,so how for do? collectivity and continuity is the bedrock of good defences, so we need a settled back four and a good back up (which Evans is). The major problem is Rio's fitness.Sir Alex needs to bit the bullet and address it. all these lies of stomach bug, cramps and such small small lies will not cut it. the same issue with Heagreves. If we had addressed that DM position in the last 12 months of his 2 year absence we will not be in this position. Even Smalling will go through this phase that Evans is going through,so the solution is to either sort out Rio and the DM position. I am hearing feelers that Carlos Queiroz may be on his way back. He molded our best defences, it can't be a coincidednce. Mike Phelan is c r a p. Evra needs a two weeks break in the beach, sipping Barcadi and admiring good female flesh (his wife or girlfriend o ).The boy has been playing football for 3 straight years without a decent break. Sir Alex talked about giving him the break after the world cup and getting him back into the team around now. He changed his mind and the outcome has been disastrous. I ask again, how horrible is Fabio in training? |
i give up on these two. Evans needs to be taken out of the firing line and reschooled on the basics. He just can't do the basic things right and that is scary. his concentration is worrying. If Rafael raped Fergie's granddaughter, he needs to report him to the police. this form of punishment is not acceptable. How worse can Rafael be compared to the ineptitude JOS is presently bringing to the table? tkb417, i give up on JOS.you can do as you desire to him. If either Wes or Rafael do not start on Wednesday, i will be seriously alarmed. I have a sneaky feeling that Rio is injured again. at this rate we will need to buy an experienced partner for Nemanja.one who is around 26, 27 but has enough experience to bring to the table. Smallings is one for the future and Evans is failing the test so far, after showing great promise. |

off topic , i just saw this quote somewhere.i wonder your take on this, guys; This week the findings of a research study into homophobia in football were released by Staffordshire University. The researchers had been prompted by Max Clifford's assertion that he advised two well-known Premier League players to conceal their homosexuality because "football remains in the dark ages – steeped in homophobia" |
