davidif: Can someone please explain all these "broke this, broke that" nonsense that some nigerians like saying. Its really amusing and absurd at the same time. Its as if so called "broke" people are a different species or something. Watching some Nigerians calling their fellow Nigerians broke is like a beggar looking down on another beggar because he got the biggest crumbs today. In case most Nigerians didn't know, Nigeria is ranked as one of the poorest nations in the world with over 60% of the population live on less than $ 2.00 dollars a day yet you would see Nigerians bragging and looking down on other Nigerians who are less fortunate than they are and call them "broke" when they themselves are either just as "broke" or just marginally well off. It's like someone making 4 dollars a day looking down on someone making 2 dollars a day. It's so ridiculous it's not even funny. Talk about ignorance, vanity, elitism and snobbery mixed up together.
In developed countries like the US you hardly hear the white folks make fun of people because of their socio economic status but its amongst the blacks that the mentality is prevalent. Not to talk of Nigeria, one of the poorest nations in the world where the majority is wallowing in poverty another person would come and be looking down on his fellow man in the struggle and calling them broke just because he managed to get in line ahead of his colleagues this time to get crumbs that fall from the table. Animal kingdom mentality at its worst. Humble yourself before circumstances humble you.
On another note, with all this fascination about "broke guys" why don't we hear topics about broke girls? Why must it be the guy that people refer to as broke? I hardly come on here and hear anything about broke females, it's always the guy. As if the economic situation in this country is different for men and women. Are they not all in the same boat? Thumbs up bro. You just said my mind, like someone educated. Living abroad has opened my eyes clearly to the deep poverty mentality that is prevailing in Nigeria. Brokeass calling others broke. Thats how one girl was telling me she can't marry someone earning less than 120k, meanwhile, she is earning just 23k |

partnerus: You've made my day with your write-up. This got me laughing. Yes I know what it feels like cause I'm a living witness too. I got dumped by a girl I spent my last kobo for during NYSC era and after that, she parted ways with me and settled with another man. According to her, she loves me and still does till now but for the fact that I wasn't financially stable with an uncertain future prompted her bid me goodbye. I wept and cried for several weeks as I remained indoors cause I loved her so much. Then spontaneously, I embraced reality and made several photocopies of my CV and went job hunting. Today I work and do some other hustling to make ends meet. I am not saying I am there yet ooo... but I have learnt that every woman needs an OK guy for a husband if you know what I mean. Now, I don't approach a lady again. That has been postponed till things stabilises. Thanks for your write-up. It was just a reminder of my resolution. Even if what you re saying is reasonable, you don't have to be a pussy ass niggar in explaining it. Irrespective of your bank balance, get your esteem high. |

Amarabae: being Rich has many levels. Many ladies are not looking for a Dangote kind of guy but a Hardworking Financially Stable Guy. and I see nothing wrong in that. He may not have his own house, atleast let him afford a 3-bedroom flat. He may not have a murano or quest, atleast let him afford a camry even if it is old model. Women want to be comfortable. Simple Do you know how much is a 3bedroom flat? Hle much should he be earning to afford it. I keep saying that poverty has washed up people's brains. Looking realistically, to afford a 3bedroom flat in a decent location in Lagos, one should be earning around 500k and above monthly. Thats basically the upper middle class. Whats the percentage of the upper middle class compared to the lower class? Meanwhile, all girls are looking for 3bedroom apartment. Even one bimbo that manages to buy N200 top, with dirty wigs and pose in ICM is insulting broke boys. Get a life y'all. The economic situation will determine the financial capacity of men you will meet often. Thats the truth. |

JewelStone: Calm down bro, you just got here and you ain't seen nothing yet. Have you never heard of how white Australians treated and are still treating the Indigenous Aboriginals? If you want to know how racist Australians are, try applying to a white collar job if your name sounds African, Indian, Aboriginal, Muslim etc
@Topic Systemic bias is real and it's sadly not going away soon. I don't experience it much because I don't pay attention to it. For instance, my non-white colleagues always complain to me that my team leader is racist and he's biased towards the white staff members. This is probably true to their experience but I don't pay attention to it because my team leader hasn't treated me unfairly, and if I have any concerns, I bring it to his attention objectively without directly or indirectly accusing him of bias or racism. Maybe I'm guilty of enabling systemic bias, but I'd rather focus on my job than look for bigotry.
But then again, what most of us refer to as racism could just be preference. People prefer to interact with people they can understand, who share the same experiences as them. We are all guilty of this Your opinion tho. I won't say that there is 100% no racism here. I see it happen amongst people quarrelling in trains and public places. I ve never experienced it, infact, I will still say I do not think the general population is racist. Obviously, there could be few idiots out there, but its not something to make me wail about. I ve been made a temporary team leader for a task where I work, despite "white" people being there before me, not cos of my skin color, but because I was able to convince the manager. I m not saying its 100% no racism, but at times, you see what you want to see. I feel its overhyped at times. Sometimes, I believe its not bias, people naturally just connect more with people they can more easily relate with. I stay in an asian community and I find their whole lifestyle difficult. And yes, they are not generally as friendly as the white australians, I can't really connect with them socially and culturally and it doesn't make me racist. It doesn't mean they will belittle you for having another skin color as its more comon in Europe. I know a Nigerian who was considered as the only person for his job, and promoted one level up, just after looking at his resume and interview. His name is also Nigerian. And even if you ve stayed 10years here, our opinions and experiences can not be the same. |

lusen: Before i came to Australia to commence my studies, I always ask if I will be able to pay the second year tuition through savings and intensive work as i could only afford the first year fees (no thanks to our falling naira). I always wonder why nobody gave me a straightforward answer until I came here and got to know I was only asking a jamb question. Truly, its a difficult question to answer as what worked for Mr. A might not work for Mr. B.
Yes, you can get a Job to feed yourself and pay for accommodation. It's really gonna be hard if you wanna pay school fees yourself. Its actually very possible if you are the 'hustling' type. There are people doing it. But definately, you mustn't be lazy, unnecessarily choosy nor Lilly livered. You must be strong. Very strong.. Generally, i will say, if you can afford only one year tuition, take the risk. You never know what God will do.
Note that about 70% of jobs here will require you to have a car. Bring your driving licence and plan to buy a car as soon as you land. Bring lots of money to settle down(as much as possible). By my observation so far, Aged care/disability jobs is the best for international students. But most times, one must be certified before he/She can be employed in an aged care facility, meaning you should also try as much as possible to start the course after settling down.
Yes. truly, one should enable to find schools around the cities where there are greater job opportunities. I av peeps in the cities that are changing jobs like diapers. work full everywhere. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the likes.
I'm not in any of the cities I listed above. I'm in Geelong. (one hour from Melbourne). But its okay by me because apart from the low cost of living, I will grab my extra 5points when I finish my studies and start processing my PR. geelong is considered a regional area and no 5 extra points for those in big cities.
If your plan is to stay back after your studies. You must make sure you are coming to do a two-year program minimum. Also the course you are coming to study must not only be on the SOL/CSOL list, It also should be a course you think will 'stand the test of time' on the list, so you won't wake up one day and discover your course is nowhere to be found on the list.
Australia is a very beautiful place. A multicultural society. The people are very friendly. They keep smiling at you like you just won 30billion.
hope I've not written too much epistle.. Okay let me drop my pen. cheers! This is so true. I got here recently and on the first Sunday in church, some white guys won't let me go. Just talking talking. trying to make friends. They even invited me for a dinner, which I didn't attend due to my schedule. Why I love Australia is simple.... There is hardly any racial discrimination atall. Even the whites know they are all or mostly immigrants. The real natives are the aborigines. There are even many asians here also. Its really multicultural. Irrespective of work, my brother people have their respect. There is no unnecessary worshipping of a boss or authority. Tho I ll still mention that paying fees while studying is difficult. Besides all, there is a functional system. If its your first time out of Nigeria, you will have to adapt to the too much orderliness here |

This is why I love Australia and I believe its one of, if not the best country for a Nigerian to migrate to. Almost everybody, white included is an immigrant. The original natives are aborigines so everyone is respected and has equal rights. The only thing is your visa status should be permanent resident or a citizen, then you will have the opportunities you want |

cooldood: Op, same way some people leave the villages in 9ja, to find a better source of livelihood in Lagos and some make it, while some don't (depends on a couple of factors, if you are a hardworking n smart guy, chances are your life will be better than staying in the villages/ towns, as there are more opportunities in Lagos). Same way, people see travelling to much better countries to find a better source of income, there's nothing bad in that. Let no one deceive you, ask yourself a simple question: are you hardworking n smart? If yes, oga, take your chances. Developed countries are designed for hard-workers to live a good life.
Same way cost of living in Lagos is higher than cost of living in villages/ towns (especially cost of accommodation), expect a much higher cost of living in advanced countries, however, just as what you earn/ make in Lagos within a year or two (working hard) can build you a duplex in the village if you save well, what you will earn out there in those great nations (working hard also) in 1 year, will buy you a good home in Lagos.
The question for all to answer is simple: does anywhere in the world guarantee future success- my answer is NO, but, does more developed and serene societies provide better opportunities and chances to succeed in future? I bet you, the answer is capital YES. Try your luck out there and see where you'd be within 3 years doing legal stuffs. #myonecent Too much wisdom fell on you. These things you said are actually common senae analysis that evades many Nigerians. Migration is part of human nature, regardless of the argument here. |
