GOVERNOR Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, yesterday, ridiculed Tuesday’s campaign rally of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the state, saying the party was in the state to sell lies to the electorate.

Daniel who described the Governorship candidate of the ACN in the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, as an inconsistent candidate, also accused Lagos State Government of running an expensive government. He took a swipe at the governorship candidate of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Gen. Adetunji Olurin, saying, “Olurin is still coming back to me because they are fighting the battle they have lost already.”

The governor who was in company of his Deputy, Alhaja Salmot Badru, the factional Chairman of the PDP in Ogun State, Elder Joju Fadairo, made the declaration at his Thank You Tour in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state. Daniel explained that while Ogun State Road Maintenance Agency, OGROMA, spent N20milion on a kilometre of roads in the state, the Lagos government spent about N250milion on the same project.

Describing Tuesday’s rally of ACN as a wasted effort, the governor argued that the party leadership failed to state in concrete terms what they would offer the state.According to him: “It is time to remind some of these people that we know the kind of government they are running: government for the media. All the people they brought to this place yesterday were from Lagos but we will wait for them till the election proper maybe they will come and vote from Lagos.”

“Under no circumstances can we compare what is going on in Lagos with what is going on in Ogun State. Yes we agree that they plant flower but I am informed that they collected N3.5bln World Bank loan to plant flower in Lagos.“For that, I salute them. But if we have that much in Ogun State, we will not plant flowers. There is another thing we can do with that money. I never wanted to talk to them but they initiated this.

“I was also informed that they spent N500 million to fix Christmas trees in Lagos. Fashola my junior is somebody I have a lot of respect for but I don’t want to join issues with him but his boss, Bola Tinubu,” Daniel said. The governor added that he was optimistic that the factional governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, Gen Olatunji Olurin would still return to his group after he might have lost out at the court.

He stated, “what baffles me is that all the People the ACN were carrying about were rejected from our party. Amosun was a Senator for four years but could not do anything for Abeokuta where he came from.

“I challenge Osoba to a debate to choose any of the sectors he preferred and any period out of my eight year tenure and tell us what he did in that area that supersede mine.”

“I monitored their rally in the media but to my surprise they could not state in concrete terms what they will do for Ogun State.”

News on CNN says Senegal has broken all ties with Iran over similar arms shipment to the west African country. The same thing happened at the Lagos port last year but we haven't seen any firm action on it apart from Investigations over investigations. Since then its been business as usual Do we really have leaders?

I am also from Ekiti and the moves of Senator Arise and the PDP really baffles me, with the relocation  they are ready to distabilise Ekiti, they will cause an enmity between these two communities for life, i am very sure the ikole people wont be quiet about this, very soon they may start the blockade of the abuja highway thats another militancy problem in the making. They should just cancel the project or leave it in ikole for the sake of peace. 

President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have squandered $60 billion of the nation’s external reserves with nothing to show for it, presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Malam Nuhu Ribadu charged in Abuja yesterday.

The former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spoke at the flagging-off of the party’s electioneering campaign for the April general election with a Colloquium where the party’s manifesto and agenda for Nigeria was also unveiled.

He said, “At a time Nigeria had over $60 billion external reserve. I was part of the administration then; but now they have wiped it out! They have shared it and I am greatly saddened over what is happening. The current asymmetric ratio of 75 percent recurrent budget allocations over 25 percent capital allocations will become a thing of the past. This odd priority in budget making does not support true development, and only fuels corruption,” Ribadu said in his presentation titled “Our nation’s journey begins”.

After taking a closer look at the crisis rocking Party primaries in various states, it seems ACN was being smart by Using the consensus arrangement, their philosophy is all about Using the Trusted Hands they know. They also argued that aggrieved PDP members were infiltrating ACN and these foreigners were ready to buy their way to win ACN primaries.  Even though i frown at the imposition of Family members as Party candidates but i ask myself again how come ACN has enjoyed some relative peace?

The following are the controversies trailing some of the parties who conducted primaries

1. CPC In Kano----Abacha's son bought his way through the primaries and won, even though buhari and co dont like him, as it is now there is nothing they can do about it, he has secured a court order to back his candidacy

2. Crisis in PDP state chapters like Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Abia and so many others are ruling the airwaves as of the moment

With all the noise being made about power generation, this is a realistic appraisal, Is there hope for Nigeria's Development?

NIGERIA’S electricity generation may rise to 7,046 megawatts (mw) by 2020, going by a projection from UK-based research organisation-Business Monitory International (BMI).  The forecast represents 101.3 per cent increase over the present capacity of 3,500mw.

However, the projection falls short of Federal Government’s target of 40,000mw, which would ensure uninterrupted power supply nationwide, under a seamless distribution regime.

The country’s power generation increased to about 3,800mw recently from the regular 3,500mw, only to witness a decline to 3,313mw.

President Goodluck Jonathan had unfolded the power sector reforms in August 2010, where the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was scripted to be unbundled into six generation and 11distribution companies.

BMI, in its 2011 first quarter report titled: “Nigeria Power Report”, released on Wednesday, stated that this figure is near the top of the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region range. “This equates to 40.2 per cent in 2015-2020, down from 43.6 per cent in 2010-2015”.

According to the report, Nigeria would account for 2.13 per cent of MEA regional power generation by 2015, with the country struggling to narrow the supply/demand gap.

The MEA power generation estimate for 2010 is 1,222 terawatt hours (TWh), representing an increase of 4.0 per cent over the previous year (where markets were depressed by the economic slowdown). “We are forecasting an increase in regional generation to 1,518TWh by 2015, representing a rise of 24.2 per cent between 2010 and the end of the period”.

MEA thermal power generation in 2010 is estimated at 1,140TWh, accounting for 93.3 per cent of the total electricity supplied in the region. “Our forecast for 2015 is 1,378TWh, implying 20.8 per cent growth in 2010-2015 that reduces slightly the market share of thermal generation to 90.8 per cent. Nigeria’s thermal generation in 2010 will have been an estimated 15.5TWh, or 1.36 per cent of the regional total.

By 2015, the country is expected to account for 1.76 per cent of regional thermal generation”, it added.

It disclosed that direct burning of wood and waste materials would have been the dominant energy source for Nigeria in 2010, accounting for an estimated 77.0 per cent of Primary Energy Demand (PED), followed by gas at 12.3 per cent and oil with a 9.5 per cent share of PED.

Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 1,117mn tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) by 2015, representing 20.8 per cent growth over the period since 2010. Nigeria’s estimated 2010 market share of 11.35 per cent is set to rise to 12.00 per cent by 2015.

Nigeria now shares sixth place with Saudi Arabia in the Business Monitory International updated Power Business Environment Ratings.

According to the report, Nigeria’s position should prove secure over the medium term, with Iran, six points below, posing little threat. “Import dependency is average for the region, while the proportion of renewable is relatively high. However, the power sector is not particularly competitive, with limited progress towards privatization”, it said.

It noted that PED growth in 2015-2020 is set to remain around the 27.6 per cent level forecast for 2010-2015, representing 62.9 per cent for the entire forecast period. Hydropower use is forecast to increase by 29 per cent between 2010 and 2020, while thermal power generation is expected to rise 134 per cent during the period, fuelled largely by natural gas. Details of the longer-term power forecasts can be found later in this report.

“We forecast that Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth will average 7.48 per cent a year between 2010 and 2015, with 2011 growth assumed to be 6.70 per cent. The population is expected to expand from 158.3 million to 178.7 million over the period, with GDP per capita and electricity consumption per capita forecast to increase by 151 per cent and 23 per cent respectively. Power consumption is expected to increase from an estimated 20.2TWh in 2010 to 27.9TWh by 2015, providing an improvement in market coverage on the basis of 7.0 per cent average yearly growth (2010-2015) in electricity generation. Transmission losses and power industry usage of around 2.8TWh mean that the market is likely to remain tight for several years.

Hosni Mubarak has refused to step down from power as earlier expected. He said that he won't take dictates of foreign countries on Egyptian national matters.

But Mr. Mubarak's rant on live TV in Egypt a few minutes ago has further enraged the Egyptian protesters who have insisted that he must be digraced out of power.

“I’m vindicated” says Dingyadi ||  “Don’t kill democracy”Skekarau warns PDP  ||  Sequel to the decision of the National Judicial Commission (NJC) to quash the proposed promotion of the president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami, to the Supreme Court, some political parties have called for the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu.The  All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) are leading the call for the removal of the CJN, while other politicians that spoke to LEADERSHIP called for proper investigations into the allegations raised by Salami.

Presidential candidate of the ANPP, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, has described the judicial tussle as the last straw that could break the back of constitutional democracy in the country.He spoke through the Shekarau for Nigeria (SfN) Campaign Organisation and emphasised that politics within the judiciary would lead to poor adjudication, lamenting that this is not first time the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was involved in manipulation of the judiciary.This is even as the appellant  in  the  suit  in  the  Sokoto  State  gubernatorial  election in  2007,  Alhaji  Muhammadu  Maigari  Dingyadi,  declared  yesterday  that  the  face-off  between  the  CJN  and  Salami  has  vindicated  him.

Dingyadi  was  the  gubernatorial  candidate  of  the  Democratic  Peoples  Party (DPP)  in  Sokoto  State  in  the  2007  general  election in  which  the  Independent  National  Electoral  Commission (INEC)  declared  Alhaji  Aliyu  Magatakarda  Wamakko  of  the  PDP  as  the  winner.The  DPP  candidate  had  gone  to  the  election  tribunal  to  contest  the  victory.Dingyadi,  in  his  reaction, told LEADERSHIP:  “I  see  this  as  a  kind  of  lesson  to  our  leaders  in  this  country  to  always  endeavour  to  be  upright  on  the  part  of  justice  because  at  the  end  of  the  day,  no  matter  how  long,  justice  will  prevail.“This  is  a  matter  that  started  in  the  board  room  between  two  persons  and,  today,  it  has  ended  in  the public  court.  What  has  happened  will give  Nigerians  an  opportunity  of  knowing  what  had  been  happening  underground.”

In  its  reaction,  the  CNPP  said  owing to the  fact  that  the CJN  compromised,  he  should  resign  for  his  alleged  role  in  the  Sokoto  electoral  tribunal proceedings.

National  publicity secretary  of  CNPP,  Mr.  Osita  Okechukwu  said  that  the  CJN  could  not  “preside  over  the  temple  of  justice  with  unclean  hands.  If  the  court  is  to  remain  the  last  bastion  of  hope  for  the  aggrieved,  the  court  must  be  presided  over  by  men  of  impeccable  character,  high integrity  and  uncommon  transparency,  which  the  CJN  has  not  demonstrated”.

On  its  part, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has called on the National Assembly to as a matter of urgency pass a resolution prompting President Goodluck Jonathan to remove Katsina-Alu over what it termed “gross misconduct”.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, a member of the National Working Committee of the ANPP and Adamawa State chairman of the party, Umar Duhu said the incident that surrounded the promotion of Salami raised doubt on the transparency and credibility of the judicial system in the  country.According to Duhu, “Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu should be sacked for  incompetence because he is not happy with the judgement widely accepted by Nigerians at the Court of Appeal and wanted to bring in his stooge.“The National Assembly should pass a resolution advising the president to sack the Chief Justice over gross incompetence. If he is not removed, it will affect the credibility of the judicial system in the country”.

The national publicity secretary, ANPP, Hon. Emma Eneukwu, said that if adequate actions were not taken, the judiciary would be brought to disrepute. “This is an allegation that calls for proper investigation and urgent action. Nigerians are not happy with the current happening in the judicial system. This allegation further raises doubt on the leadership of the Nigerian judiciary considering various election petitions that have been happening in the country”.

The presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has  also faulted the timing of the whole exercise, considering that the Court of Appeal under Salami had delivered some remarkable political judgements that led to the change of administration in three states, to therefore, attempt to remove him from the Appeal Court, which was supposed to be the final arbiter in a gubernatorial election dispute on the eve of general election would surely send the wrong signals.He said: “I think the judiciary should try as much as possible to distance itself from partisan politics, if the institution were to maintain its traditional credibility and respect before Nigerians and the international community.

“The unnecessary furor over the promotion of the president of the Court of Appeal and the subsequent rejection of same is capable of creating tension and heating up of the polity”, Ribadu stated in a statement signed by the director of media and communication of his campaign organisation, Alhaji Ibrahim Modibbo.The national publicity secretary  of  the  CPC,  Mr.  Rotimi  Fasaki,  said  that  the  party  was  calling  for  an  investigation to  find  out  what  actually  transpired  between  the  two  top  judiciary  officers.

According  to  him,  the  allegations  from  both  sides  were  weighty  and  capable  of  eroding  the  confidence  the  people  have  in  the  judiciary,  adding  that  everything  is  still  in  the  realm of  speculation.

What amazes me however, is the rascality that Jonathan is displaying in this matter. PDP is set out to destabilize the peace in Ekiti with this University politics, It is the governor that has the power to issue the C of O for its development, how come a Senator Arise have arrogated the power to site the university in his hometown of Oye while Fayemi is from the same town and he is not complaining?

The on-going feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has taken a new dimension.
LEADERSHIP sources at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), office in Lagos revealed yesterday that the former president last Friday submitted a strongly worded petition loaded with weighty allegations against the governor.
According to the source, the petition which has been forwarded to the chairman of the EFCC Mrs. Farida Waziri carefully chronicled the alleged financial misdeeds of the embattled governor in his eight years tenure.
The source further revealed “Based on this high profile petition, the operatives of the commission have resurrected the case-file of Daniel in readiness to bring him to book once his tenure is over in May this year”.
The petition it was gathered is receiving all the attention of the Commission because of the calibre of the petitioner. “This is one petition that must be given serious attention because of the source and the manner in which it was presented. It emanated from a very important personality in the State and it carefully chronicled some of the alleged misdeeds of the governor during the eight years he presided over the affairs of the state. We must do something about this petition,” said the senior EFCC operative.
Meanwhile, Femi Babafemi, spokesperson to the anti-graft agency in a telephone interview confirmed to LEADERSHIP that the investigation of financial recklessness in Ogun State during the eight years of Governor Daniel’s tenure was on going. When asked whether the former president submitted a petition against Daniel he replied “no comment”
The petition according to the EFCC source listed a range of allegations which included outright diversion of funds meant for local government areas in the state to unauthorized borrowings. According to the petitioner, the debt profile of the state has almost hit the one trillion naira mark.
In a related development, an Ogun State High Court yesterday voided the harmonization of Ogun state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declaring it “illegal, null and void”.
The presiding Judge Justice A.O.Jibodu in his ruling declared that “by virtue of the provisions of article 14.1 of the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party, the Claimants who were duly elected on the 28th of February, 2008 as Chairman and Officers of the Ogun State executive committee of the party are entitled to hold the offices into which they were elected as set out opposite their names in the Schedule annexed to the summons for a term of four years commencing from the 28th of February 2008”.
The ruling declared, “the claimants are still holders of the offices set out opposite their respective names in the schedule annexed to the summons in the Ogun State Executive committee of PDP. It is hereby declared that the purported harmonization the Ogun State executive of the PDP as contained in a letter dated 30th July 2010 issued by the 2nd defendant (Alhaji Abubakir Kawu Baraje) is unconstitutional null and void.”
The court was ruling in a suit filled by the chairman of Daniel group Chief Joju Fadairo and 26 others against the national chairman of PDP and three other defendants.
Daniel faction wanted the court to declare by virtue of the provision of article 14.1 of the PDP the plaintiffs who were duly elected on the 28th of February, 2008 as chairman and officers of the Ogun State executive committee are entitled to hold the offices set out opposite their names in the schedule for a term of four years commencing from the 28th of February 2008.
Daniel group also sought the court to declare that they are still chairman and members of the state executive of PDP.’Article 12.72(e) of the constitution of PDP 2009 (as amended ) which empowers the national Executive of the party to dissolve a duly elected Executives before the expiration of its tenure of office under article 14.1 is repugnant to inconsistent with the provisions of section 223 (1) (a)and (2)(a) of the constitution of Nigeria of 1999 and therefore is unconstitutional null and void.
The group also wanted the court to declare the harmonization of Ogun executives of the party null, void and of no consequence.
Reacting to the ruling one of the counsels to Obasanjo group, Ajibola Oliyide said the ruling lacks merit because the presiding Judge the not listen to the parties concern before giving the ruling.
“The whole thing is a sham; you cannot rule on an issue like that without all the parties represented. The next line of action shall be unfolded in due course’
Also Chairman of Daniel led faction, Joju Fadairo, described the ruling as victory for democracy. He said “it is now very clear that justice can be delayed but never be denied”.
It could recalled that recently an Abuja high court had gave an injunction restraining INEC from recognizing Daniel faction of PDP executives in Ogun State claiming that it had been dissolved by the national body of the party a situation which gave Obasanjo group an upper hand in the political landscape of the state.
