PoliticsRe: Lagos, Ekiti, Seven Others Are Heavy Debtors –FRC by moodswing(m):
As an economist, I have consistently argued that Lagos is borrowing more than it should and also not investing on strategic developmental projects with real economic value on the short/long term.

Just like When Ngige was governor, he spent almost all the money the state had and borrowed just to finance wonder projects with no commensurate economic value. Just because we ignorantly see building of certain infrastructures especially roads as development, politicians use it to a grave advantage.

Gov't should be strategic in drawing up it's scale of preference before arbitrarily spending on fancy projects just because it's an eye candy that appeals to the ignorant sense of the ordinary people.

Billions were expended to plant flowers on bad roads, then Roads and bridges concessioned, because the state can't fund the project.

Rochas is another dude preying on people's ignorance. In a bid to fulfill too many bogus campaign promises, he has extensively borrowed to finance dubious and highly inflated projects.

Even Elechi of Ebonyi state is another sorry story not even worth going into.

Brazil isn't as fancy as the UK, but the economy of Brazil did surpass that of the UK. Making more appealing to investment than the UK which in return boosts it's economic potential and growth.

Lagos is politically astute but economically irresponsible. If Lagos state is well managed, in 7yrs, not only with she be without debt, but also become the Hong Kong of Nigeria. The potential is there but every economic decision is usually not without a greater amount of political undertone and interest.

God help us and give us the leaders we need not the politicians we want.

Usually I don't reply your kind of ignorant comments. But for the the benefit of those reading this thread, I wish to educate you a little.

Homelessness is not a crime. Neither, it's a social issue.

Travel the world and you would find homeless people everywhere. the difference is usually the action government take towards these people who are also legitimate members of the society.

In the US there are some U.S. federal programs that are designed to help end and prevent homelessness. Whereby these programs fail to end homelessness, alternate programs are usually in place to to manage it.

One of these programs include emergency shelters and transitional housing programes. While these programes take in two-third of the total US homeless, the remaining live in abandoned buildings or other areas not meant for human habitation.

Even though US government's "homeless assistance programs" does not provide shelter and other basic necessities of life to "ALL" of it's homeless citizens, it does not seek to flush them off the society either. Or take them off their inhabitable homes without providing alternative shelter.

The Lagos state government has not lived up to it's responsibility. It's morally wrong to render people homeless without providing an alternative. The LASG may not be duty bound to provide permanent homes for them, but a temporal shelter should suffice and basic assistance is very much what any "responsible" govt would undertake.

And for your information, the highest number of people who live on the streets, under the bridges and the shanties are predominantly, Yoruba's And the igbos. They are Lagosians too.

I have a land somewhere in a city.I leave it unused for some time
You go to the land and erect shanties, slums etc.I come back several years after
and I ask you to leave because I now need my land to do something meaningful then you start
crying blue murder.
The truth be told, provided you did not buy the land and it is not your inheritance, you
do not have any claim to it whatsoever.
It amazes me how some organisations make noise out of nothing. Even outside of the country,
despite the fact that the land is yours or your inheritance, you are still told what and how to build
on it because there is a master plan. If you left your village without penny, what do you expect
in the city, inherit someones land or property?

Please lets use our brains before we make comments abeg.
Wise man make I tell you...

The government has a binding social contract with it's citizens. This contract contains certain duties and responsibilities of the government. And one of the duties of the government is to "provide" for it's citizens. Both the rich an the poor.

The govement builds infrastructures like hospitals, roads, schools etc. and majority of these infrastructures are cited in the urban areas. Now how does a poor man who resides in the rural area with no access to these roads, schools and hospitals benefit from the government which he also has as much tights to as those living in the cities?

In a democracy, the government derives it's powers from the citizens, which invariably means that the citizens are sovereign.

It's is a breach of this social contract for the government to render it's citizens homeless instead of doing otherwise.

Lagosians are not only those who can afford houses but also those who can't and the government have a moral obligation to satisfy these people in different social statuses.

So you're argument is weak and of no substance.

Only an irresponsible government t renders it's citizens homeless in the name of development.

Nairaland GeneralInspiring Act Of Random Kindness by moodswing(op): 6:51pm On Aug 09, 2013
I just read a story about someone in need getting random assistance from someone he didn't know, so I got inspired to share similar experience of mine.

8years ago, I ran into debt because I had taken up an interest yielding loans from a friend to start a business but within 4 months, the business had collapsed and the cash was gone. Eight months elapsed but I wasn't able to pay back, since I was even struggling to feed properly. One promise to the other led to the involvement of the Police, I was arrested and later released on bail on the condition that I will sign an undertaking to pay up within a month.

As I left the police station, I picked my phone and called "everybody" I know in this world and told them my predicament, although they sympathized with me, but almost all of them were struggling too. Some requested for my account details and promised to send me anything they could raise, but none of them got back to me.

3 weeks had passed but I was only able to raise 68k coming 332k short. The fourth week, I reported to the police station, explained the situation of things and asked for more time, instead of getting my request granted, I received series of hot slaps and got locked up in the cell.

The next day, the IPO brought me out of the cell to "reason" with me. while we were "reasoning", The IPO's attention was needed and a certain girl who was sitting near me on the bench asked why I was being detained. I briefly explained to her, she just shook her head and said "Don't worry things will be better". I was later returned to the cell and the next day, the IPO came and told me that I am free to go. I was confused until when he told me that a good Samaritan whom I shared my situation with the previous day came to pay the debt and secured my release.

I just cried..................

Whoever she is and wherever she is, May she never know anything short of GOOD and favour. BLESS Her!.

Dolling out such an amount of money to help a random stranger is more than an "extraordinary act of kindness" Her kindness has inspired me to be a giver, not to those who want, but to those who need. I wish she could see what I've become in life. cry cry cry cry

Mr Aboki: Mr. MoodSwing Sir..

It would be a big shame if you are indeed a lawyer in real life as you seem to have a very poor understanding of how the law works.

1. You blamed his being granted bail on the 'Imperfect legal system' of Nigeria. Now how you came to this conclusion is yet to be ascertained. Now please tell us in your legal opinion why he should have been denied bail.

2. You spoke of a just legal system. By what yardstick does one measure how just a legal system is. By yours or a set internationally recognized yardstick.

3. This statement 'As long as the case against Chidi Lloyd is yet to be decided, it is still subject to mitigation or collateral attack'. Collateral attack?! Mitigation?! Like whats your point?!

4. This statement 'he can sue me for whatever will make him sleep, but be aware that I never referred to him as criminal. I only implied that his actions showed great deal of murderous tendencies.'

Here is a quote from your previous comment;

I want you to read the highlighted portion of that quote slowly and tell us again if you called/referref to Mr. Lloyd as a criminal.

5. Freedom of Speech... grin You have the freedom to speak, but only speak wisely..
1 & 2

It is indeed disturbing that your supposed understanding of the legal system is based on shrewd personal perception and sets of assumptions formed on a very wrong premise.

One of the principles of the rule of law states that "The process by which laws are enacted, administered and enforced is accessible, fair and efficient". You referenced George Zimmerman's case in your earlier post. Now, Zimmerman was set free even when it was established that he "followed" Treyvon, and in the ensuing confrontation which he obviously caused, shot an unarmed Treyvon. Zimmerman was discharged not because he wasn't guilty of killing Treyvon, but because of the controversial stand-your-ground law, which his defense was based. Even the US attorney general Eric Holder and other high ranking lawyers didn't agree with the law neither with the verdict.

Since you claim to be a sound Nairaland lawyer, you should know that laws must pass a general test of validity: not repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience or incompatible either directly or by implication with any law for the time being in force, and also must not do injustice. The stand your ground law didn't do the course of justice, neither it circumvented it..

I am not advocating for an accused person to lose fundamental rights, but that the course of "justice" should be upheld in the dispensation of law and not just for laws to be literally interpreted and arbitrarily executed by the court.

No set of laws in the world is perfect, and when i say that our criminal justice system is flawed, it doesn't mean that the court didn't act within the prevailing laws, but that our laws are deficient and thereby wouldn't serve the cause of justice at all times. Kapish?

THE LAW IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN INSTRUMENT TO SERVE JUSTICE, and when justice is not served in law, then the purpose would be considered defeated.

3: mit·i·ga·tion
/ˌmitəˈgāSHən/
Noun
The action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something.
Synonyms
alleviation - relief - palliation - extenuation

The law was used to reduce the severity of Mr. Lloyd's murderous actions.

On the other hand....

By collateral attack, I mean challenging the validity (not legality) of the relevant laws or decisions by which Chidi Lloyd's trial is based.

4: I guess you have the right to interpret it anyhow you like: 'Like every other" does not intend to make him a criminal, neither it was used to highlight similar behavior exhibited by people whom have been legitimately accused of wrongdoing and incarcerated.

Rossikk: What a lousy, illiterate write-up by a colonised mental slave with no sense of dignity, self-worth, or independence.

The audacity this pig has to equate African attire with 'uncivilization' and western attire with 'civilization' alone is enough to confine him to a mental hospital for the severely reta.rded. Worse is his smug assurance that he can actually equate his self-hatred to some sort of 'enlightenment', positing that our traditional attire were created ''hundreds of years ago''. Well the western suit WAS invented 'hundreds of years ago' too, and, like African wear, has only been modified as the years progressed. Why can't this goat advocate a more 'work-friendly' transitional process for African wear if that's his thing, if not for his colonised self hatred? Just as this goat is happy to import his language, his religion, his eating habits, his car, he also wants to jettison his indigenous wear for imported clothes alone. How long before pigs like this begin to advocate for mass skin bleaching of all Africans to ensure we ''meet up'' with the light skinned colour of ''civilization''? It seems all we've got left to remind us of who we are is the skin colour. Don't bet against self-hating orang outangs and swine like this writer campaigning to shed that too.

Finally, the writer's claim that ''The wearing of cap is not indigenous to any ethnic group in Nigeria'' shows his GROSS HISTORICAL ILLITERACY, and that he is an absolute DUNCE where it concerns Nigerian/African history. A walking white dunce in black skin. An embarrassment to every living African, and a caricature representation of the bamboozled slave steeped in ignorance and self-loathing. The sooner his loathsome ilk die away from our independent society the better for us all.

Mr Aboki: You don start again abi?!

Talking nonsense that you know nothing about..

What did our Justice system do now?! Was the case not a bailable offence?! So you expected the court to hold him in prison indefinitely. Now let me teach you yat another lesson in law. Even murder suspects can be bailed under certain conditions. Most times when bail is denied a suspect, its either the evidence around the case is so heinious that the suspect might be a threat to the society, The suspects life is being threatend and his safety outside the prison walls is not guaranteed, the suspect is a flight risk or the suspect is a repeat offender. Chidi lloyd is none of the above. Infact, he can be granted bail based pn personal recognition. The max the court would do is to take away his passport and travel documents. #LessonNo.1

Rivers people dont need a thank you from him, rather Rivers People are thankful to him for stopping those coup plotters that tried to unseat the government of Rivers State using cheap street thugs. God also loves Chidi Lloyd. Chidi defended the unity of Rivers State. If faced with another ugly situation like that, we expect no less from him.

Chidi lloyd is not a criminal, be careful how you speak. For you to call someone a criminal, they must have first been 'convicted' of that crime. Since he has not been found guilty of that crime, nor does he have any previous convictions that we know about, he is not a criminal and should not be reffered to as a criminal. Thats why the Police use the word 'Suspect', thats why the law says 'Innocent until proven guilty'. You can be sued for slander & defamation of character right now by Mr. lloyd and you would be found guilty . #BeWarned.. #Lesson No.2

He can sue the Police for inhumane treatment. The police does not have the power to torture anybody in their custody. Infact the police cannot hold a suspect for more than 24 - 48 hours without charging him or her to court. The Police cannot hold him for that long, keep flying him from one place to the other without allowing him full access to his lawyers. Even if Chidi is truly a killers sef, he still has rights. Even a convicted criminal should not be tortured under the law. He may get hard labour, but never torture. Ihunwo reserves the right to file a civil suit against Chidi and claim both punitive and compensatory damages to whatever amount he pleases, but that does not stop Chidi from suing the Police. #Lesson No.3

Our Law and criminal justice system has not done anything wrong in this case so far. Even Oscar Pistorious was granted bail in the case of Murder. O.J Simpson was also granted bail on a 250,000$ Bond during his own murder trial. George Zimmerman was granted bail on a 150,000$ bond in the Treyvon Martin murder trial. So is it a case of assault that sholdnt get bail?!

My friend the law can be interpreted in so many ways, don't bring this lame sets of assumptions based on your literal understanding of the law and not what should be obtainable in a just legal system.

Even when we "suppose" the law is absolute, it doesn't necessarily mean that it serves the course of "natural justice" and good conscience.

Yoruba thinking and reasoning is far superior

The reason you are in Lagos is because since 1999 when we returned to democratic rule, Lagos and other Yoruba states have made their region advance and built infrastructure to encourage investments. That's why you hear of Oyo State's GDP being higher than that of any SE state or that monthly IGR of Ogun is almost N4bn which is three times higher than the highest IGR or any SE state

This is what the Yorubas do better and don't tell me we are what we are because of you because GDP stats for Lagos shows that more than 90% of the GDP comes from sectors dominated by Yorubas and some multinationals
