Happy New Year and thanks for using Nairaland!

There are more than meets the eyes on this issue. I heard he regretted his national chairmanship ambition and moves when he found out that the national will reduce his influence and cash flow, and wanted to make U-turn to retain Lagos chairmanship but Sego and his men fought him hard with powers that be to remain at the national which has more of Northers. They want him at the national, being there, he wouldn't have the influence, power plus monies he got from Lagos....they simply want Mc Oluomo out so that the negative influences he is attracting the the president will reduce, besides all their members in Lagos have already align with Sego. He finally bow to Seyi and the governor for peace to reign. Thats very mature and thought right internal politics......

Crime › Child Marriage: Bayelsa Govt Summons 4-Year-Old Girl’s Parents, "Husband" by Morbeta11(op): 6:31am On Dec 31, 2023 |
The Bayelsa Government has invited parents of a four-year-old girl and the 54-year-old man allegedly involved in a marriage in Akeddei community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the government’s intervention is coming on the heels of media reports of a Dec. 26 marriage between the ‘bride’ and a 54 years old.
The Bayelsa Government’s reaction is contained in a statement provided to NAN in Yenagoa on Saturday.
The statement is jointly signed by Dr. Dise Ogbise-Goddy, Chairman, Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) Bayelsa and Mr Paniebi Jacob, Director, Child Development in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Social Development.
The state government, which frowned at the development, also expressed concern over the “illegal marriage” based on tradition and customs, saying it was repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs and Social Development and GRIT have acknowledged the receipt of a formal complaint from a child rights advocacy group, DO Foundation, on the controversial marriage.
Jacob, Ogbise-Goddy and the state Human Rights Commission, said the traditional ruler of Akeddei community honoured the government’s invitation and promised to produce the child, her parents, the groom, the youth leader and the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC).
The statement noted that the Bayelsa Government did not support child marriage under any guise.
“That is why the state government did not hesitate to assent to the passage of the Bayelsa State Child Rights Law.
“We are taking steps to rescue the child from all the key actors in relation to this illegal ceremony that they tagged a ‘mere spiritual’ affair.
“The law is clear on issues of tradition and customs that are repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience and working with the Bayelsa State Police Command, we shall ensure incidents like this do not occur in the state again.
“On behalf of the governor of Bayelsa State, we express our gratitude to all the non-governmental organisations, including FIDA and DO Foundation, that have risen to the rescue of this innocent child.
“Bayelsa State is children-friendly and this case will be pursued to a logical conclusion.”
However, NAN learnt that the alleged marriage involving the man, simply identified as Elder Akpos, was at the instance of the girl’s parents.
According to a source, who pleaded anonymity for fear of penalty for desecrating traditions, the parents of the girl claim that the 54-year-old man was her husband in their previous life.
According to the community source, the girl claimed that the man was her husband who died mysteriously in their previous life.
The toddler has narrated that over the years, she has been moving from place to place, to be given birth to by different parents, searching for her former husband.
The source said: “The little bride said if she was not allowed to marry her husband, she would have no other business in Akeddei community, and that she was going to die peacefully and go her way.
“In order to avoid losing the girl to death, the people of Akeddei decided to organise a glamorous wedding ceremony to mark the union of the two previous life lovers.”

Politics › Constabulary Tarnishing Police Image, Needs Separate Uniform – Arase by Morbeta11(op): 4:44am On Dec 29, 2023 |
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, says the Special Police Constabulary needs to either be outright overhauled, disbanded or given a separate uniform different from that of the regular policemen.
According to him, men of the Special Police Constabulary engage in unethical practices, including extorting, and hurting the image of the Nigeria Police Force.
Arase took the position in a statement on Thursday by the PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani.
The statement read: “The commission is already in contact with the Inspector General of Police on the need to overhaul the organisation and operations of the outfit. There have been several reports of unprofessional conduct by officers of the outfit, a quasi-police formation created to assist in community policing.
“Reports of their unprofessional conduct range from highhandedness in dealing with citizens and barefaced extortion on our roads and communities. The commission calls for an entirely different set of uniforms for officers of the outfit that should be easily differentiated from that of the regular police officers.
“This, it noted, will help to track appropriately the conduct of men of the outfit and that of the regular police officers and free the Nigeria Police Force from blame associated with the misconduct of men of the outfit. The commission further calls for the disbandment of the outfit in states where they are not salaried and taken care of.”
The PSC said it was wrong for states to set up security outfits and not fund them.
“The commission has observed that these set of men have descended on innocent Nigerians for their daily upkeep through forceful extortion and intimidation.
“The chairman of the commission, Dr Solomon Arase, retired Inspector General of Police, said the commission will work with the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to sanitise the organisation and operations of the outfit. Dr Arase said there is an urgent need to differentiate the special constabulary from regular police officers and clearly define their operations, including uniforms and rules of engagement.” https://punchng.com/constabulary-tarnishing-police-image-needs-separate-uniform-arase/

26 Rivers State House Of Assembly Members Who Defected To APC Have Lost Their Seats – PDP Insists On Fresh Poll
No fewer than 27 members of the House of Assembly said to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and immediate governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has maintained that the 26 Rivers House of Assembly lawmakers who left the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) were no longer members of the state legislature. No fewer than 27 members of the House of Assembly said to be loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and immediate governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. The lawmakers announced their defection at the plenary, citing division in the PDP as the reason for the move.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately commence the process of conducting fresh elections into the 27 state constituencies in Rivers State over defections by their lawmakers. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in a statement, said the call for the election followed the vacancies created when the state lawmakers willfully abandoned their seats by defecting from to the APC. The party explained that by defecting from the PDP to the APC, the seats of the 27 former lawmakers had become vacant by the provision of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
PDP urged the lawmakers to stop parading themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly as such would amount to impersonation with criminal consequences.
The PDP National Legal Adviser, Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, on Thursday told journalists that though President Bola Tinubu might have waded in the dispute between the Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the party stood on what the constitution says on defection. Ajibade while addressing newsmen shortly after Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court, Abuja, adjourned the embattled lawmakers’ suit until January 24, 2024, said; “PDP as a party, we are standing on the side of the constitution of the country. “It is not about issues of an agreement because by the constitution, we all sworn to uphold.
“The governor himself sworn to uphold the constitution likewise the president; I am not against the president, calling for the resolution of the matter. He is the chief security officer of this country and he has every right to intervene in the issue.” According to the senior lawyer, aside from that, the constitution of the country is very clear; Section 109 (1g) is clear as to issues of detection, adding that the affected lawmakers had not denied that they had not defected. https://saharareporters.com/2023/12/28/26-rivers-state-house-assembly-members-who-defected-apc-have-lost-their-seats-pdp
