Nairaland is officially a blog site. I guess there's nothing innovative anymore; most headlines now are twitter posts or celebrity pics. I hate to say this but if this continues for long, Nairaland may go the way of MySpace, AOL and Hi5.

There are many reasons this is happening. In any establishment, a digress from the norm is usually directed by the leadership. In this case, Seun. He seems to understand that the members of his forum are getting younger and younger so gossip and trivialities will engage their attention longer. Back in the day, a front page story would have like 5 to 10 pages. Nowadays, you'll be lucky to see 3. The attention span of teenagers is generally erratic. Another reason is he probably does not mean for this to happen, but he has incompetent MOD's handling his forum. You can see it everyday. Bad spellings, same stories published multiple times with different headlines, etc. At the end of the day, Seun is the root cause. He's the leader.

I've visited this site almost daily since 2005, and seen it evolve through different phases.
If you look back, you'll find that trivial topics have always graced the frontpage as well. However, the important
difference is that those were driven by user-interest. So, threads with organic and significant interest would get moved there.

As a result, there were fewer frontpage items, but they had genuine interest, hence, more pages.
Now, it's a rat race of one or two mods just railroading garbage to the frontpage all day like a trash recycling plant.

What's with this constant meaningless/irrelevant gossip-blog type threads littering the frontpage every day now?
