Something consistent about those analogies: the prize seemed to be for the agent only. I guess finance professionals, as agents, need to put more effort into educating the principals about the risk involved in investments. If after painting a clear picture of the possibility of losing the entire college savings, the principal agrees to place the funds in some alternative, high yielding asset, then he's solely to be blamed. His loss will be someone else's blessing in the zero-sum game of financial markets.
About financial modelling. I'll assume that one needs to know the most basic programmes, at least excel, for simple analysis and forecasting. If your role is purely in advisory, the need should be less pronounced. I'm not a big fan of software either, but I can't escape excel.
Thanks, i'd thought one must be skilled superbly.

abouzaid: @deleo16, u can't compare somebody that did not go to school at all to somebody that made 3rd class. Those that did not go to school or dropped out started hustling early in their life times while those that made 3rd class are academics failures by the time their finished youth service who are already behind those that did not go to school in life. Yes, they can make it in life with a little luck and connection but it is always very difficult starting life over at 30yrs

I'm pleased to inform you that the "member following" feature has now replaced the former "friendship" feature. You can't add people as "friends" anymore, but you can follow them with or without their permission. @denee and sammy, please continue, its good that you are doing this, it is of a great benefit, especially to starters(am included). Afterall, i derailed the thread first with the 'first class in a fed university vs 2.1 in a state uni' stuff.

emmysenior: It really baffle me how my employers despises job seekers with 3rd class on their result, inspite of their great perfomance in the coursf of the interview. I discovered that the people with 3rd class sound more renaissance and classical compared to the people with 2nd class grades. I just can't fathom why most employers won't give them more chances. Your views pls.

Career › Re: Finance And Economics, Which Is Better? by nitrogen(m): 6:09pm On May 30, 2012
I believe that it is no big deal to choose a state uni over a federal uni, it all depends. A friend in 2005 had one of the best results in jamb and Neco, he chose to study in a state university rather than a fed uni, reasons for that was best known to him. He later graduated with a 4.56 cgpa(mechanical engineering), i know if it was in a fed university, it would have been a 4.95 cgpa. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed
Career › Re: Finance And Economics, Which Is Better? by nitrogen(m): 5:45pm On May 30, 2012
AjanleKoko: Remember that the people who passed JAMB very well are the people who went to those schools.
People that scored 270 and above, matched with straight As in WAEC (abi na NECO una dey call am now) will likely not have much trouble dismantling any so-called sadist lecturer.

The guys who went to the state unis are mostly the 'wounded' candidates.
AjanleKoko: You forgot to mention also, that the first class students of UNILAG are not in any of those categories that you're mentioning.
I know a few Unilag first class students. All of them were first choice picks in UME, and none of them scored below 250. None of them did the diploma.
Remember we are talking about the top 1-5% of the average class. Those people were smart enough to get into Unilag on merit, why would you be surprised at them making first class degrees?

One of the chaps I know is even an SSCE national award winner. In fact, this chap went on to do masters/Phd at Stanford, and works in one of the Big Oilcos (the one on the US West coast). You think that kind of guy is one of the 100/400 material?

Mind you, I didn't do my undergrad in Unilag oh, so I am not under any compulsions to defend them. In my opinion, there are smarter people at OAU. But let's say what it really is. You can't find those top-notch students in state universities.
With these, i think you are wrong sir.
Career › Re: Finance And Economics, Which Is Better? by nitrogen(m):
I think performance is partly based on encouragement, a situation where a lecturer of a uni in a particular dept encourages hìs students to finish from the school and go out there to make the institution and country proud is the best, graduates from such schools are quite different from those whose lecturers would not want their students to be greater than them, also, the recent emergence of such unis is a big disadvantage, they wouldnt want to give out firsties frequently but occasionally in order to build the school's reputation and integrity.
That is my main.

Btw, i quite agree with yemmy_ma, cos the simple truth is this, most(not all) that had high marks in jamb and even those that do that presently probably bribed their way, they eventually get admitted into the best schools and who knows whether some of them even manipulated their ways to get a firstie because i know some that did just that.
Another thought is maybe the curricula of these federal unis are quite narrow.
Please, prove me wrong, all these are just thoughts.

P.S. This doesnt erase the fact that there are good and even the best in these federal universities, of course these schools attract them.

Contumely: I'm in first year in uni.
My original waec will have my real age when it's out.
Now I want to reduce the age a little bit (2yrs), how then will it work? Because if I decide to alter that through Birth cert, it will not tally with what will be written in the WAEC original cert.
Also, is age written in transcripts and other documents from unis?

Furthermore, how does age affect one in Job market?
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Thank u.
To effect a change of date of birth on your waec certificate will be a tough one, buh you can still try.
As per the transcript, that can be changed easily at the student affairs dept, just go to the appropriate quarter and present your new birth cert. and they will effect the change.
Btw, why do you wanna do that? Its uncalled for.
Career › Re: Finance And Economics, Which Is Better? by nitrogen(m): 9:57am On May 30, 2012
5/5huh Sounds crazy. T'will be tough to get that.
Btw, all theses schools that gives out first class anyhow, like MAULAG(unilag), uniben, unilorin, and other federal unis, they do this maybe because they've been in existence for long or what? I can tell you that a 2.1 gotten from some state universities in nigeria is almost like a firstie in most federal universities. It is always hard to get a first class in these state unis because of the presence of saddist lecturers, the late emergence of these schools (early nineties) and some other reasons.
No offence meant.

wakagirl: My elder sister is getting quite upset and frustrated with herself for her inability to further her education back then. She is unfortunately 38 years at the moment, she has a stable job though not quite rewarding financially but it keeps body and soul together. She lives abroad (Scotland) and is not doing really bad just that recently she started feeling bad about not holding a degree cert. It was not her fault there just wasn’t support when she was supposed to further her education.

For some reasons she is feeling so bitter about it now and is getting very upset. She is to me lucky to still have a job and a stable one but she thinks if she holds a degree cert she can do a better job and earn more as her current job does not require any special skill and anyone can do it. At the same time she is worried about being able to cope and come out in flying colours as age is not on her side and she also has other commitment like kids to look after.

At 38 what advise will you give her, is it too late to pursue a degree and if not will she be able to cope and come out well and even at that will this degree be that relevant and useful at the end of the day with her age?

Will appreciate any advice.
@op, it isnt late, the fact that your sister is 38 years doesnt mean she cant go ahead and get a first degree, even after the first, she can go for masters( if she isnt up to 50 after the acquisition of first degree) and it will be useful cos it will place her somewhere okay(position) before she retires.
If you are ready to learn, knowledge doesnt care about age. There was this my level mate( 70 years) when i was in my first year in school, the funny thing was that he was studying medicine, when interrogated, he said he came for this in order to fulfill his desire to acquire a first degree certificate before he joins his fathers beyond.

So, i think, it is even early for your sister compared to the case stated above. She can go for part time programme and within 4-5 years, she is through. Please, encourage her to proceed. She will cope unless she doesnt want to.
Career › Re: Fed. Govt 1:1 Scholarship For A 5 Year Compulsory Lecturing Job. Do Or Don't Do? by nitrogen(m): 9:36pm On May 28, 2012
Abuja – President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday inaugurated a special post-graduate scholarship scheme for all university graduates with a first class degree.

Inaugurating a 10-man steering committee for the take off of the scheme, at the State House, Abuja, Jonathan decried the dearth of qualified academic staff in the tertiary institutions.

He said that 60 per cent of lecturers in the 124 universities across the country had no Doctorate Degree, noting that the situation “is embarrassing and un-acceptable’’.

“The information I got from the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) is that about 60 per cent of our academic staff in our universities don’t have PhD. that is quite embarrassing, I belief the Professors here will also feel bad.

‘’We have 124 universities, Federal, States and private and that is not good enough.

‘`I will set up an inter-ministerial department to work with some of you in the academics to come up with policies for robust training so that young men and women who are interested in academics could go anywhere in the world, that over the years we must bridge that gap.’’

The President said the initiative, which he conceived while as Governor, was aimed at building human resources for sustainable development and national transformation.

He said the committee would commence the programme by selecting 100 beneficiaries on merit for post graduate scholarship in science and engineering courses in the best institutions in the world.

“Every year, we should tap from among our best brains, selecting our best brains, we are starting with 100 because we have not made adequate arrangement for funding but the number will increase when we make budgetary allocation for it in 2013.

“We select our best brain in the area of science, engineering and some areas of economics and expose them to the best facilities available in the world.

“The ministry of education and this committee will have to travel to these universities to negotiate for positions in the top 25 universities in the world.

“The idea is for you to benefit you must have a first class. It is based purely on merit, no quota. We are giving opportunity for best brains.’’

President said the beneficiaries of the scheme would, on completion of their studies, be mandated to work for the country for a period of five years as lecturers or researchers before they could be allowed to go in to their chosen careers.

Jonathan tasked members of the committee to ensure transparency and merit in the choice of the prospective candidates.

Responding, the committee’s Chairman, Prof Julius Okojie, thanked the President for the appointment and assured him that they would deliver on their mandate.

Other members of the committee include the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Dr Jamaila Shuara and Mrs Iddatu Abdullahi of the Federal Schorlarship Board.

The rest are Professors Musa Alabe, Mohammed Sule , Mohammed Onogu, Olurotimi Tayo, William Okowa and Ikenna Onyibe.

The Deputy Director, Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, will serve as Secretary.

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/05/jonathan-inaugurates-scholarship-scheme-for-first-class-graduates/
A very good initiative but i hope it wont be like those promises made before that were sparingly or never fulfilled, like the 1700 buses, which the ones released out of all never did precipitated the whole of the FCT. What we want is 'we have' and not 'we will'.
Btw, why is it that our president keeps setting up committees on matters(on ground and arising)?

P.S Am sowi for the digression.

Good post but too long.
Passion and aspiration are both good career determinants, but most, especially nigerians are victims of norms and circumstances. The ever increasing challenges faced in Nigeria has led to a 'normal' and 'no choice' thing. Thats why you see graduates and undergraduates with the wrong notion imparted on them by nature and drive to survive (and not to succeed) always forgetting their goals and opting for what will 'just put food on their table'.
