The only bit of this whole mess I don't understand is why the CBN keeps maintaining a wide gap between the interbank and blackmarket rates. I thought we were supposed to be floating the currency?... Why on earth do we still have such a wide difference between official and parallel rates?
CBN keeps forcing everyone to exchange at unrealistically low official rates thereby encouraging the exact same round-tripping which we were supposed to have eliminated by floating the Naira.
Today Nigeria is hoping to utilise the massive diaspora remittances to plug the forex gap, but at the same time, CBN is pegging the maximum rate at which international money transfer organisations like AZIMO, Western Union etc should exchange for. AZIMO for instance exchanges £1 for N450 while the true value of the pound (black market) is in the range of N550-600. How on earth is this stupid regulation supposed to encourage those in diaspora to send more money?.... I think the entire board of the CBN needs to be flushed out cos they are as clueless as the word itself. |

Politics › Re: EFCC Bent On Convicting Patience Jonathan At All Cost – Ohaneze Ndigbo by obailala(m): 12:39pm On Oct 19, 2016 |
DONSMITH123: The pan Igbo socio political group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo youth wing, has insisted that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is trying to convict wife of the former President, Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Jonathan at all cost.
Recall that the anti-graft agency had recently confirmed that Mrs Jonathan is being investigated for money laundering, but no case has been instituted against her in any court yet.
The Commission took a step further in its ongoing investigations by freezing her personal account in Skye Bank Plc, titled ‘Patience Ibifaka Jonathan.’
In her defence, Mrs Jonathan claimed the money was meant for her medical treatment abroad, and asked EFCC to defreeze the account or face legal action.
But, Ohanaeze’s National President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement criticised the commission for subjecting its suspects to media trial without thorough investigations.
According to Isiguzoro, “The EFCC is simply persecuting ex first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. She has already been found guilty without trial in a court of competent jurisdiction. This is unhealthy for our democracy. EFCC is clearly running a campaign of calumny intended to convict Dame Patience Jonathan at all cost. The former first lady is yet to be tried in court, yet the EFCC has been treating her as a criminal. This strategy of trial in the media must stop.
“To fight corruption, the process must be thorough and not selective. EFCC is not a court and must submit to the laws of the land. The haste to rush to the media to vilify suspects is responsible for the low number of convictions recorded by the EFCC.
“If we may ask, where are the wives of former first ladies including past Nigerian leaders who were at various times accused of corruption? Why can’t they be investigated? We can only take EFCC serious as anti graft agency when it investigates the likes of ex-Presidents, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo, including late ones.”
http://dailypost.ng/2016/10/19/efcc-bent-convicting-patience-jonathan-cost-ohaneze-ndigbo/ Since when has Ohaneze Ndigbo become a political group that now speaks for and defends politicians?... including non-igbo politicians?... Some people just keep making a mockery of themselves, making a mockery of the association and embarrassing the Igbo nation. The last time I checked, EFCC only said they were investigating a case of money laundering, but with these careless utterances and needless defences, it is actually Ohaneze and other mushroom groups who are unknowingly pronouncing Mama Peace guilty, not EFCC. What a shame! |

Business › IMF Affirms Nigeria As Africa’s Biggest Economy!!! by obailala(op): 8:50am On Oct 19, 2016 |
IMF Affirms Nigeria as Africa’s Biggest Economy Nigeria has been affirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the biggest economy in Africa — ahead of South Africa and Egypt.
In August 2016, Nigeria was reported to have lost its spot as Africa’s biggest economy to South Africa, following the recalculation of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
“A recalculation using current exchange rates put South Africa on top because the rand has strengthened against the dollar,” BBC had said in August.
“Based on gross domestic product at the end of 2015 published by the International Monetary Fund, the size of South Africa’s economy is $301 billion at the rand’s current exchange rate, while Nigeria’s GDP is $296 billion,” Bloomberg had also said.
But according to TheCable, latest estimates from the IMF however put Nigeria’s GDP at $415.080 billion, from $493.831 billion at the end of 2015. The IMF World Economic Outlook for October 2016 puts South Africa’s GDP at $280.367 billion, from $314.732 billion a year earlier.
Egypt’s 2016 data was reported as not available, but its 2015 size remained at $330.159 while that of Algeria, one of the largest economies on the continent, was put at $168.318 billion.
The United States, China and Japan maintained their spots as the largest economies in the world, with a GDP of $18.561 trillion, $11.391 trillion and $4.73 trillion respectively.
These countries are being trailed by Germany, United Kingdom and France in that order. The Managing Director of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, said at the just concluded World Bank/IMF meetings that global growth had been too slow for too long.
“We continue to face the problem of global growth being too low for too long, benefiting too few,” she said after the world economic outlook was published.
The world expects an economic growth of 3.1 percent in 2016, reviewed from 3.4 percent. https://i0.wp.com/leadersandco.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/02071428/International-Monetary-Fund-IMF.jpg?resize=696%2C522 http://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/10/19/imf-affirms-nigeria-as-africas-biggest-economy/Even in our comatose state, we still stand taller, one can only imagine what the case would be when we recover on our feet. Igboid: When I first visited Owerri was in 2007, I was so astonished and taken by the beauty of Owerri. There were green and lively flowers all over the town, everywhere was neat, Owerri was the neatest town in the entire country, it even won an award, only Calabar could match Owerri in neatness those days.
Ohakim was not the best, but that man kept Owerri neat and clean, he was a full Igbo blood.
How exactly did we end up with a man whose half DNA is Hausa. A man not fully Igbo presiding over Imo stage. If he were performing well, we could ignore his alien genes, but Okorocha is not performing well. He has plunged Imo state into the abyss of infrastructural development. People for whatever reason (political or whatever) visit bad spots in the peak of the rainy season, take several pictures and then repeatedly open multiple threads with these pictures of bad spots to mould and distort your impression of a city. They even go as far as digging up pictures of bad federal interstate roads. Everyday a new thread springs up on this section of nairaland narrating how horrible life has become in owerri because of rochas and I begin to wonder what's really going on, one begins to wonder if owerri is the only city in the country or if rochas is the only governor in southern Nigeria. You say you last visited Owerri in 2007, have you seen any of the areas you visited in any of these pics that these characters have been posting about?... If I go into lagos, visit some slums, take thousands of pictures and flood the internet with horrible pictures, do those pictures necessarily represent Lagos?.... I particularly hate this line of argument but Is there any single city or town in nigeria that doesnt have an equal number of potholes or water-logged areas as the dubious Op and his numerous ilk have been posting about Owerri?... How can you let your opinion be moulded by the cheap tricks of some confused hacks?.... Oh I forgot, you hate Rochas the hausa governor in the SE. |

Sweetguy25: I know and admit that Nigerians cannot stop engaging in corrupt practices overnight. My point is that this administration is not "fighting corruption". No new laws, institutions, policies, programs or acitivities have been instituted by Buharis's regime to actually "fight corruption". Going after individuals who allegedly stole public funds is not fighting corruption. What has Buhari's Government done to ensure that within the next four years, corruption will be drastically reduced in critical sectors of our socio-economic and political life? The answer is none. TSA alone has dealt a heavy blow on corruption, I'm surprised you don't know that. Even the house of corruption itself (the NASS) for obvious reasons vowed they wouldn't be a part of the TSA terror. When the NASS runs away from something like that, you don't need a soothsayer to tell you what is involved. Before we start thinking of creating new laws, if Nigeria can just implement half of the laws and brilliant policies it already has, you would be surprised at how far that will go to 'reduce' corruption. |

Jokerman: Can anyone please outline to me the benefits of the anti corruption fight to the common man...
The basic needs of man are food, clothing and shelter... other needs are security, social amenities et al...
Since Buhari started his commendable fight against corruption which has implicated and indicted a lot of big looters... what I will like to know is its benefits to we the common man...
Has it improved welfare? Has it improved shelter? Has it made food readily available? Has it provided commendable security? Has it made the common Nigerian stop corruption (financial, Moral,l etc)? Has it curbed petty crimes etc?
If it hasn't really answered those questions in a positive answer, then of what benefits is the fight to the average Nigerian??
What can be done to make the anti corruption fight beneficial to the common man??
Since Buhari is a man of Integrity according to some people, Nigerians ought to feel the positivity of its anti corruption fight..
Again, what are the benefits, and how can it benefit the common man..
BarcanistaTonye, I would respect ur answer Mynd44 too.. Anonimi Firefire.... Corruption is the reason we are where we are today, if not for corruption, we wouldn't still be grappling in darkness in 2016, we wouldn't have about the worst healthcare system and life expectancy worldwide, we wouldnt have the number of bad roads we have and our policemen etc wouldn't have been as useless as they are today etc. Now to answer your question, what you are suffering from today is not because corruption is being fought. It is hard to believe we still have educated people who think this way. You suffer today because your struggling nation has just recently lost over 60% of its income. A household who struggles to feed on a 100k salary then suddenly, that salary is slashed to less than 40k; do you really think everything would be fine for such a household?.... Do you really think this hunger is because the man recently decided to stop corruption?... on the contrary, this decision to reduce corruption is the reason you haven't died of hunger for these 2 years that the income has been slashed. With the increase in tax net, the higher efficiency of the customs (now increased revenue from customs even though imports have reduced drastically), the fact that contract sums can no longer 'easily' be pocketed by one 'bigman' while the contract is never executed and with the implementation of the TSA which now makes government funds easily trackable and difficult to pilf, if only we get a miracle and the nation's income returns to anywhere close to what it used to be before, then your eyes would be opened widely to real damage that corruption has been doing to your country. |
Politics › Re: ANTI CORRUPTION Fight, The Common Man by obailala(m): 10:48am On Oct 18, 2016 |
Sweetguy25: How exactly is Buhari fighting corruption? Because Nigeria is the still as stinkingly corrupt as ever. Policemen, civil servants, custom and immigration officers, lecturers and teachers, judges and lawyers, pastors, businessmen and politicians are still as corrupt as ever. Nothing has changed. Nigerians still openly pay and receive bribes, extort money, steal, frame and commit a dozen other corrupt acts as much as ever.
Going after individuals who allegedly stole money is not the same as fighting corruption. Corruption cannot disappear with the wave of a magic wand. This is reality, not a fantasy movie. Like the poster above said, we all have a role to play in the fight against the monster called corruption. It is not an ailment that can disappear overnight. |

They do not care about the youths. “We are now compiling the list of such politicians and we shall hand over the list to MASSOB for proper sanction while we shall also carry out our own sanctions.
The categories are former governors, some former and serving senators, failed contractors, about 3 serving Igbo governors, former and serving ministers, former commissioners, and those who benefitted from Jonathan’s election funds. “Infact, if by December this year, such failed politicians fail to turn a new leaf, they will leave Igboland for us because we cannot tolerate such people in our midst again. They cannot stay in Igbo land and use our resources to better only their lives and the lives of their girlfriends and hangers on while their subjects suffer unduly. “Igbo contractors also given contracts in Igboland who fail to execute such contracts creditably will also face the music.” Hallelluia!
