Car TalkRe: Installing Speed Limiters In Vehicles Does Not Make Common Sense by obailala(m): 4:15pm On Sep 02, 2016
MPVGoddess:
Video lifted from a Q and A on Quora with the Q: Why are cars made to go significantly faster than the highest national speed limit?
If the highest speed limit in the US is around 75mph, why do they make your average Toyota Corolla top 140mph? Wouldn't traffic/speed enforcement be a lot easier if you just couldn't speed?

The arguments make sense.

The tornado is not to be taken literally it stands for all the dangers that it may be necessary to run away from in Nigeria.

Even your road safety agency copies policies from elsewhere including as they say Kenya, so comparing notes is not out of place.

Is it fair to overburden transporters in a bad economy with additional costs when the government is far far richer and should bear enforcement costs?
While you compare notes, you should not fail to note that every society has its peculiarities; different strokes for different folks.

Firstly, the US you may want to compare us with has some of the best roads in the world in terms of wideness and smoothness. Nigeria can't boast of that. I'm sure if they had highways half as bad as ours, and if they had drivers half as retardedd as ours, the US would have done something about speed limiters a long time ago.

Secondly, the US police or traffic officers might have a robust system through which they can enforce speed limit regulations; I doubt that Nigeria's FRSC even has a comprehensive computerised database to track details of a car owner by just inputting a registration number.

Thirdly, due to a combination of factors, Nigeria currently has about the worst record of road traffic fatalities worldwide. I'm sure if the US had a tenth of our fatality record, they would have considered speed limiters, at least for public transport vehicles.

Finally, I understand your 'tornado' example isn't to be taken literally, however, when one considers the totally absurd and totally unacceptable fatality statistics on Nigerian highways, you will agree with me that by allowing cars to be capable of outrunning 'tornadoes,' the number of lives we save is so so so insignificant when compared with the multitude of souls that perish daily on Nigerian roads courtesy of overspeeding.

Change is painful!.. The hardship will persist for a long while, but it will eventually fizzle out and we will eventually get there. Wailing is an inalienable right of a suffering person, a weeping person is allowed to throw abusive words. But then, weeping and wailing and abusing never really solved any problem.

it still remains a mystery because oil is still pumping from the niger delta...see when ever i shout regionalism its not about being partisan..it is to actually hammer sense and will into our useless state governors to wake up from their sleep..these state governors would rather wait for their monthly allocations from the center whilst resources in their states are made to remain unused or unexplored...

until the FG stops the feeding bottle system, states would continue to be weak and useless...these states need to know that the only way for them to survive is by being independent..only then can they explore and exploit all resources within their reach...
It's really unbelievable how mentally lazy leaders can be because of the feeding bottle system; this thing continues to look more like a spiritual problem.

Hope you see quotasystem..

Let the north keep waiting for fayemi..buhari would be all about oil whilst neglecting the fact that the north is blessed with numerous solid minerals...
This exactly is the problem, I remember sometime early this year, Fayemi explained that state governments aren't barred by any law from extracting solid mineral resources in their domain. Why state governments have refused to key into this is still a mystery.
http://punchng.com/states-not-barred-from-solid-mineral-exploration-fayemi/

On another note, Fayemi has been literally begging 'big men,' state govts and other investors to invest in mineral mining. So far, the usual saviour and alternative govt (Dangote) is presently setting up a coal mine in Kogi state which would be functional in a couple of weeks. Why the govts of Kogi state, Enugu or Benue state are not setting up coal mines themselves is still a mystery to me. Very soon we would hear things like marginalisation by Hausas again.
http://www.informationng.com/2016/08/coal-mines-in-kogi-to-become-functional-within-30days-dangote.html
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/dangote-commence-coal-mining-quarter-4/

Why the govts of northern states like Kaduna etc are not setting up proper gold mines for instance is also a mystery; when the hunger keeps biting, they would say it is avengers.

I don't want to know who started it, I as a citizen who has no political interest, I am more concerned about how the government affects me in my day to day activities,so you should have bolded the part I said i want to see results and get to work because there is nothing magical because other countries have done it and are still doing it,that my friend should be our focus, stop looking for a fight as if it gives you a kind of emotional release, you don't have a different market where you buy your goods and commodity neither do do have a filling station where you buy fuel at a cheaper price, we are all in this together. Excuses they say are for weak people, they should sit up and get to work,is that too much to ask from a government that promised us heaven on earth during their campaign election?
The statements you label as excuses were/are only responses, that's all I was trying to point out.

Regarding the present recession, there's a reason I dont sound too bothered or too antagonistic of the government; that's because I'm a realist, I knew from the onset that this hardship was inevitable seeing that Nigeria as a nation foolishly relies on only a single commodity. Several economic prophets since time immemorial had preached of the imminence of this day but of course, successive governments ignored the call for diversification while they feasted on oil money. Today oil money is gone, and the fact remains that forex cannot be plucked out of the skies. Diversification being the only solution isnt something that can happen overnight; DIVERSIFICATION = YEARS + CASH. Unfortunately we don't have both of these things, there's no cash and no time cos people are starving. Because I understand these things, I also understand it is meaningless to run out online everyday accusing the 1 year old govt. of being responsible.

Or the other countries that are doing it right here in Africa and have done it in developed countries did they relocate from mars?,I am tired of all this cat and mouse chase Abeg,we the citizens of the federal Republic of Nigeria want results, we want to see the better side of the change they promised us not this negative change we are experiencing
The government doesnt start the blame games so it is out of place to accuse the government of blame game. When the very people who sunk Nigeria into this miry clay, into this economic quagmire, together with their die-hard supporters, have the effrontery and are shameless enough to be the loudest voices accusing the present govt of causing the problem, then you can't blame the present govt for clapping back.

For 68% of the responders to be of the opinion that PDP caused the present problem, it's not because these people actually like the apc or the present situation; rather it's just a way of asking pdp and their supporters to respect themselves and shutup.

THE POSTPONED 'EVIL DAY' IS NOW HERE, BUT...

With the depletion in the country's incomes occasioned by the slide in global oil price coupled with the devilish militant activities in the Niger Delta area, ONLY a hypocrite will be surprised at the economic woes that have hit the country!

The confirmation by the National Bureau of Statistics that Nigeria's economy is now in downturn did not come as a surprise to me. From the days of my elementary Economics class, when we were told that the country was a mono-economy, I knew that this 'padded' reality would one day evaporate before our eyes.

Having willingly laid all our eggs in one basket for many years-and stupidly so-we ought to have anticipated this disaster. But we chose to play the Ostrich. We had sufficient notice of this avoidable calamity but we failed to make haste while the sun shone.

There is no amount of economic jargons, lamentations, criticisms or anger that will rescue the country from this SELF-INFLICTED pains other than economic diversification and prudent spending of the nation's earnings. Thankfully, the present administration has already set the motion in this regard. This effort should be sustained regardless...

Whynotthetruth:
1)If I am not an economist but I know Soludo is one...and he has warned that one year is ENOUGH to blame crude price fall...after that blame leadership ineptitude...

2)I am educated enough to know how much crude price was under Obj($9) ...and how much under Buhari($50)...and it was going up and down under Jonathan...So was life this bad under Objhuh Was Obj always blaming the military? What was our reserve and debt burden under PDP government of Obj?

3)How come Sanusi sees this government as heading nowhere but confused?

4)Which economist has lauded this government confused and inept attitude except liars and propagandists like you?
Soludo cautioned against the continued complaints over oil price and lack of savings by the previous administration; he simply said things could be done better to remedy the already bad situation and that the government should focus on solutions and not complaints. But that does not negate the fact that the present hardship is INEVITABLE given Nigeria's over-dependence on oil for its forex and the drop in oil price. Only solution out of the current mess is diversification, and diversification takes years + money. I am yet to see the economist that would explain the abracadabra that can be done to invoke dollars from the spirit world overnight.

Nigeria of 1999-2003 is not the same as Nigeria of 2016, that Nigeria survived with $9/bbl 16 years ago does not mean that it would be enough for our daily needs today; I'm sure you should also be educated enough to know that. That N500 was sufficient for my entire needs when I was in SS1, that doesn't mean N500 would be enough for my needs now that I'm a married man with kids. Firstly, under OBj, how much was the minimum wage compared to now?... how much was government's monthly recurrent expenditure?... What was the value of the dollar to Naira then?... How many people had cars and how many owned I-pass-my-neighbor generators and what was Nigeria's fuel daily demand then?... How much of fuel did we have to import then compared to the almost 100% we import today?.... In general under OBj, what was Nigeria's forex demand compared to today?... Now that every individual with an ATM card can buy things online with the click of a button, are you aware that overall forex demand is presently more than 10-20 times what it was back then?... Yet you think that things are the same enough for you to make a direct comparison?

Get the simple message, the only solution to the current mess is diversification, and diversification takes years + money.

Sometimes one begins to just wonder how a person like FFK with all his fine education and exposure degenerated to the sort of psychopathic, hate-filled being he is today; he's obviously sipping from the same polluted chalice as Nnamdi Kanu and his worshippers. Apparently FFK wants to stoke ethnic disaffection in Nigeria based on a simple opinion of a young American Mark Zuckerberg; probably when he asks Nigerians to "think and think," he's soliciting Nigerians to increase ethnic suspicion and hatred cos even Mr Zuckerberg is now conniving with the Hausas to marginalise and undermine southern Nigeria?

Very funny video 'to watch' but not good to experience.

Regarding speed limiters for Nigerian vehicles, considering how often we get these kind of tsunamis in Nigeria, for every 10 lives that may be saved because we allow them to be capable of speeding away from an approaching ocean surge, 5000 lives would have been lost on our roads due to the indiscretions of drunk overspeeding drivers.

Nigeria currently has about the worst road traffic fatality rate in the world, anything to reduce this is a welcome development. It may be difficult to implement this for private vehicles, but I'm in support of a bill to compel all transport companies to have speed limiters on their vehicles.

It's a common occurence to have hiace buses belonging to transport companies fly at speeds of up to 160km/hr on our rough pothole riddled narrow roads and most of these drivers/companies dont even check the condition of their tyres; this isn't just absurd, but it's plain stupidity. When the unexpected happens, we begin to blame witches and wizards and principalities and powers and relatives in the village. I totally welcome the plan to force transport companies to fit speed limiters.
