I think I'll agree with Chinenye here. I have never seen an Osu person or heard about any Osu family. To me, Osu caste could be an Igbo myth. Many people are unaware of it and I have never heard a marriage was cancelled because one of the partners was an Osu. Growing up, all I know was that the word "Osu" was used by some women during quarrel to insult one another, not commonly used though or all say very rarely used. ChinenyeN: May I ask, who are the 'those'? You see, I'm going to tell you what I tell everyone else, regarding this topic. The only way for someone to hold on to this institution (or, to participate in maintaining it) is by first know who is and is not Osu. Now, already, with that in mind, there goes 90+% of the Igbo population, out the window. To put it simply, the vast majority of Igbo people have yet to even witness this thing called "Osu", and on top of that, many of those who "know" about Osu tend to only know about it from having read something about it on the Internet. So this should really make you wonder, who are the 'those'?
Many of the people who you hear say "I will never marry Osu" or anything else negative/discriminatory about Osu have probably fraternized with an Osu at one point of their lives or another, but they will never know. In fact, even those Osu that they fraternized with might not even have an idea that they are even Osu, to begin with, because most of them actually live their whole lives in ignorance of their "Osu-hood". So, you see, with the way people go about, raising dust concerning this Osu subject-matter, one is led to believe that at this very moment and in this day and age, some grave injustice is occurring to a notable portion of the Igbo population. Yet, until this very day, we are yet to even hear "kpim" (in the words of my mother) from these supposed Osu.
If the issue is as dire as many try to present it, then it only stands to reason that Osu themselves would have by now called the attention of the U.N. to their plight, but how can they, when many of them remain in a state of oblivion, concerning their "Osu-hood"?
Long story short, all of these topics, all this talk is nothing more than the phenomenon of crying more than the bereaved. Essentially, you honestly have no real reason to get upset over all of this, because think about it: Where will you find the Igbo that "continue to sustain this ignorance"? Who are you going to be upset with, when you can't even be pointed toward the direction of the institution itself? |

Onlytruth: This is part of why I am a strong advocate for setting up an Eastern Nigeria Development Corporation own by ALL the states in the SE and parts of SS. The company should develop all the mineral deposits in the SE and parts of SS to ensure world class environmental standards and best corporate practices. It would also nullify cave mental rivalry and conflicts which undermine our unity, making it easier for foreigners to steal from us.
This idea is for GREAT/MATURE MINDS, not kids. The only way out of this is regional government. I still maintain that all the states created in Nigeria are fraud. |

@ OP, Orient did not include your community in its investment plan because there's no physical structure (oil well, pipe lines, refinery) on your land. When time comes to get oil wells sited in your community, they you get something.

Beaf: ^ Cut the crap. Anyone reading would think that the President is only there for the SS. Its time for people like you to leave thinking in bigotted ways.
@topic For the balance, here are GEJ's words:
No President can convene a Sovereign National Conference without being acused of subverting the state, but GEJ can surely set the ball rolling (which he has). It is for other groups to begin clamouring for an SNC in addition to the two groups that visited GEJ. Call it SNC or any other name but the aim will be to restructure the country except he sees no problem in the way Nigeria is constituted. SNC does not equate disintegration of Nigeria. As for the quote "a larger body will meet on issues that are still controversial for a national consensus" does not make sense to me. Nigeria as a whole is controversial from the illegal states and LGAs created by illegal military regimes without conducting a referendum to federal civil service to redefining citizenship and indigene/settler problem to revenue allocation to resource control to . . . everything. It's not a case where he will selectively pick what to be discussed. |
Politics › Re: No Need For Sovereign National Conference – Gej by Obiagu1(m): 3:46am On Feb 17, 2012 |
Onlytruth: Bros I'm thinking that our support for GEJ may have been in vain because the more I look to see any transformative agenda from him, the less I see any. His body language these days even shows that he is almost comfortable with the status quo. That is why I say that I won't support him past December this year. He has to show that he is serious about changing Nigeria. My support ended after fuel subsidy saga. Anyway, from what I observed, every agitation from down South starts and ends with resource control and not proper restructuring of the country. Glad that someone like Oritsejafor called for SNC too. It pisses me off when someone that's suppose to understand that Nigeria handed over to us by the Whites and the Military is not working will choose to play politics instead. |

chioma134: Previously,I thought osu issue would die a natural death if we all kept quiet abt it, but I now think a radical solution is needed. Don't mind all these people here claiming they can marry osu. The pressure alone from ur family will not allow u,no matter ur level of resolve. Infact if u marry an osu,u and ur lineage after u automatically become osu,n u r sent out of ur family compd to build ur house elsewhere. When I was abt getting married, someone carried a malicious rumour of how my husband-to-be's grandmother was an osu. My parents told us pointblank that the marriage was over. But thank God,it turned out to be a lie. Osu practice is traditional,n there r traditional ways of removing d curse. But cos of civilization, people claim all men r equal n refuse to subject themselves to the traditional ways of cleansing. This is a form of denial and so the discrimination continues. Everyone claims to be civilized n will not discuss Osu in public, but in their houses they forbid their children from having any relationship with osu. I think some groups of people r now canvassing for the abolishment of Osu d traditional way. And if their move prospers,a day will come when d whole Igboland with their kings n priests will rise up and say "enough is enough". Thank you very much. All those shouting I can marry an Osu are the ones that will hide under the cover of their roofs and warn their kids never to marry an Osu. Hypocrites! Something radical has to be done about that Osu silliness instead people are paying lip service to it claiming Christians or advanced. Crap! |
