World Bank indicts Jonathan’s government, says massive poverty, unemployment killing Nigerians


The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly, the World Bank says.

The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly, revealing a perplexing contrast between the nation’s economic statistics on rapid economic growth and minimal welfare improvements for much of the population, the World Bank has said.

“Poverty rates remain high in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. These rates declined between 2003-2004 and 2009- 2010, although not nearly as fast as would be expected from the pace of economic growth in the country,” the World Bank said in its ‘Nigeria Economic Report’ May, 2013.

“While the officially reported growth rates of GDP well exceed population growth in the country, the pace of poverty reduction does not, this implies that the number of poor Nigerians living below the poverty line has grown measurably,” the report stated.

Bros, do you know what you are saying? Service ever 5000 hours ke? That gen will NOT last 1000hrs b4 it shuts down assuming its a computerised gen. Service is advised at least every 250-350 hours. With moderate use, 5000 hours is equivalent to 3years of use.

Do you know how much it costs to 'officially' repair a broken landrover engine? My emphasis on officially. Can you share with us the cost for shock absorbers, new doors, lights etc and how a simple police station will be able to accommodate the maintenance cost in their budget?

I case you have deleted these from your memory card, let me remind you; COJA: Nigeria purchased over 300 BMW 3 Series for that event... CHOGM: More BMW 5 series this time.. ALGON alone Purchased over 1000 Toyota Prados for the Police, and the list goes on. So trust me when I say we can purchase those Land Rovers if we choose to.

Why is Nigeria purchasing a more durable, efficient and practical vehicle such as a Land Rover (which we have used in the past to great success) a day dream?

Did I say opening fire on the SUV is the right thing to do? Nna men! I said I was shocked! This is not the standard Nigerian police behaviour. The Nogerian Police I know would have started shooting immediately their phone rang. The Nigerian Police I know would have opened fire the moment they saw aggressive movement inside the car after surrounding it. And you tell me that they surrounded a vehicle, it's occupants opened fire from within the vehicle and the Nigerian Police didn't return fire and if they did didn't kill them.. Infact, the suspects were not even injured but are still alive and in jail.. hmmmmmmmmm.... Something is wrong with that story.

A supply and maintenance agreement can be reached with Range Rover for the supply of these cars.. We are not asking for vehicles with spinning rims and T.Vs in the headrest.

Land rovers are not bulletproof and neither are the KIAs nor any other Police vehicles around the world. However, there is no arguing the fact that the Land Rovers are more rugged, versatile, better value for money, don't depreciate as fast, stronger than the KIA and to top it up is an all terrain vehicle.

There is no guarantee that the Land Rover wouldn't crash, but as I have been advocating, if these drivers had the right professional training in security driving courses, the risk of damage to these cars would be limited.

The fact that Enugu State Government isn't responsible for buying cars for the Police is mute. Well if he isn't responsible, then he shouldn't have.

You are one of the few guys I respect here...so seeing what you wrote came as a shocker.

The OP has explained what happened to the car. They were on a high speed chase after being alerted of car snatching which may be for the purpose of of robbery, kidnap or assasination.
On rounding the criminals up, the armed robbers opened fire on the UNINSURED policemen. And in a bid to dodge the assault, they fell into a ditch.

What more do you guys want from these helpless policemen who wouldve had their families thrown out of police barracks with no compensation if they (police) were killed in the process?

N2.5 million is nothing compared to the safety of those gallant policemen.

pickle_juice: If the story abt what happened is true, i don't get how 3 boys opened fire on police when they were surrounded and they are still alive. In america they would be in the hospital or dead. Naija police needs to go for shooting practice. The only excuse for not harming those boys would be if they surrendered

Don't be daft !.Police cars crash all over the world in the course of chasing criminals. The Enugu policemen caught the armed robbers. We should give kudos to them and to the Governor for making the cars available. Enugu will be safer for it.

I would be the first to condemn them if he crashed the car comming out of a pepper soup joint along Obiagu road.

good that you have an inverter in your plans.

sorry to hear that your inverter charge does not last long. from the little you have said, your inverter is ok just that the batteries are going bad. you need to change the batteries, remember to buy deep cycle batteries and do not allow them batteries to be flat before charging them, that's the quickest way a destroying even the best battery in the market.

When am relocating back to Nigeria, am coming armed with adequate solar panels and inverters to power a small estate, never going into generator business again.

Give it six months you will be singing a different song on how you spend a good part of your income on diesel

I use to have 30kva, 15kva diesel generators together with 5kva, 2kva and 1kva Petrol generators.

Loolzzz...you are right though.. The diesel powered generators are by far better than the petrol powered.

However, in my estate you can't run petrol generator ( strictly diesel power gen allowed) nor can your gen run beyond 12am...either you then switch to the inverter or you let open the windows..

Funny enuff when the company came to do a load assessment on my house, they suggested a 27 - 33kva gen.. Nna men! I shout na. So I settled for the 20 kva.. The motivation to buy the Generator was longevity. Now I know that over the next 4 - 6 years, I no go get any major headache with generator. Simply service it every 5000 hours and you will be fine. You fit run her for 48hours non stop and your mind no go cut say e go spoil from over working..

The only downside to big generators na the price of Diesel..

But thank God for Asari refineries Nig limited..
