@Rhodalyn

It is easier said than done, sitting in your shoes and giving that kind of advice, is borderline irresponsible. Her reality is right in front of her and she is tackling it head on. She cannot wait for a man to come and sweep her off her feet. It might happen in England or the west, but Nigeria is a different Animal and i am sure you know that. She might not even be able to finish school, i can feel her desperation, i am sure you can too.
PoliticsRe: Census 2006: Have You Been Counted? by OldGlory1(m): 4:23pm On Apr 04, 2006
If you were not counted, does that mean your vote will not count during the election? What will they use this data for? How about the Millions of us living outside the country. Nobody even told us how to go and engage in this process. Well let us sit down and hear how many millions we are in that country. How much did this cost again?
TravelRe: Dictator At Work In Nigeria Embassy Vienna. by OldGlory1(m): 1:31pm On Apr 04, 2006
@Mariory

She/he clearly stated that she has travelled often to the country, and the consul officer did not need to call her at home with those weak questions. Nigerian Embassies in many countries around the world work against it's citizens instead of working to make life easier for them. Clearly they know she is Nigerian, i think it is a question of unprofessionalism mixed with a bit of jealousy. She is paying 75Euros to go home and the consular officers know that Austria does not permit dual citizenship, therefore they come across people like this everyday. Shameful.
PoliticsRe: I Believe That President Obasanjo Is Corrupt by OldGlory1(m): 8:50pm On Apr 03, 2006
I think he is as corrupt as the eyes can see, but more astonishing is how the citizens do not expect any better, or maybe they have just lost all hope for a better Nigeria. Nigerians are saying he is "The least Corrupt President we have ever had". Now that is is an assuring statement. WOW ! I guess we have come to a new low.

@Ototx

Please who is more corrupt? If he as President creates an environment for corruption to thrive, then i think it is a no brainer.
BusinessRe: Exporting Goods From Uk To Lagos: Which Goods? by OldGlory1(m): 3:18am On Apr 02, 2006
Yeah I need to ship some Laptops to Nigeria. I guess i have to buy Insurance and hope that my recipient gets it. You cannot get delivery confirmation with USPS to Nigeria. UPS,DHL and Fedex cost too much. Does anyone have any ideas?
TravelRe: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by OldGlory1(m): 3:11am On Apr 02, 2006
Sorry Men I am not sure what it is. I Live in the US,the British Embassy here is independent of the the one in Nigeria. Try Goggling it.
TravelRe: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by OldGlory1(m): 8:08pm On Apr 01, 2006
@Oasis

50GBP is more like Naira 13,000 and multiply that by 20 and you are pushing nearly Naira 260k a month. Now that is some good quid for any standard of Nigerian, I am not sure how many Nigerians will say no to those numbers. Once we start thinking practically and not from our hearts and this question is really easy to answer.

@Segebams

I guess you have to find an embassy of a country you want to go to, and go and apply for some kind of Visa and if granted, you head out on your plight. Good Luck!

@Gidig

What exactly do you want me to come and take advantage of? I have a Bachelors degree and make more money than i have made in my life right now. Please tell me what my alternative or what i am coming home to do. The US is already developed and there is opportunities i can take advantages of everywhere. What is my Opportunity cost.

@Oasis

U make very good points. Some here is able to work and send $4000 a year to his family is better than making money locally and is not able to stretch his income as far.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: househelp? by OldGlory1(m): 9:38pm On Mar 30, 2006
Is there still a job as "HouseHelp"? If so what is the job description and what salary are you expecting to be paid. It is sad that you are in this position, and that you cannot find work. Well i hope you figure something out.

Please stay in the UK or Scotland for your higher education. It is not wise to go back home now, except you cannot afford to school abroad, then i guess u have to make that call.
TravelRe: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by OldGlory1(m): 1:29pm On Mar 30, 2006
@Akolawale

And your point is? UK education thread to explain what? Education is free up to a point. And in the US as long as you live in the community you do not only go to K-12 for free, you get picked up every morning for free. Please there is simply no comparison. I do not think that any of us here would pack our bags from the US and leave for a "Better Life" in Nigeria. But Nigerians Line up in the Thousands everyday for a chance to leave their country. Why?
TravelRe: Is Life Really Better Abroad? by OldGlory1(m): 8:31pm On Mar 29, 2006
I think i have to agree with sage. In every aspect of life, Healthcare,Life expectancy, wages and income, security, checks and balances,justice ETC. The US has it all, and i think this is generally a bad comparison, other than the sentimental value, i think if people were had a choice of where to be born in today, most people would choose many countries other than Nigeria.

@Akolawale

In the US you get some of the taxes you paid back, depending on your income,family size and other reasons. I was in the UK very recently and got my VAT back on my way back to the US since i was visiting. Not much, but i was able to claim back the Taxes i paid.
PoliticsRe: Has Charles Taylor Escaped? by OldGlory1(m): 8:00pm On Mar 29, 2006
If you ask me, i would say he was never lost. I think the government once again played a stunt on Nigerians for political gains. It is funny how he is missing one day and found the next day. Why go thru Maiduguri on his way to Cameroon? He could have gone thru Ikom which is a lot closer, or even Oban in Cross River State. I think this is all some phony ploy for political points and 'Third Term Agenda".
CultureRe: Why Must Nigerians Abroad Marry Nigerians? by OldGlory1(m): 8:14pm On Mar 27, 2006
Why limit your choice of women to race,tribe or nationality? Love comes in all colors,shapes and sizes. Especially if you are in the US, u see it everyday and everywhere. The "melting pot" works and as long as we all bleed red, then marry whomever makes you happy.

PoliticsRe: Wasn't Colonialism A Good Thing In A Way? by OldGlory1(m): 8:05am On Mar 23, 2006
@Demmy

Nobody is proposing for the return of colonail masters. All i am saying is that colonial times laid a lot of ground work for a functional society. During that time, solid institutions were built in the country and the country was on some kind of "Auto Pilot". Law and Justice was for all not only for the wealthy.Education,Healthcare,Pension, per capita income,life expectancy, was better than it is today .Now after the keys to the barn were handed over to the indigenes, well i will let you narrate today's tale.

Did Colonialism do any good for Nigeria? Try to give a one word answer please.

PoliticsRe: Wasn't Colonialism A Good Thing In A Way? by OldGlory1(m): 12:44am On Mar 22, 2006
OK let me have a go at this again.

@David

I am not ignorant at all in this case. I am just responding directly to the topic literally. The point is that Colonialism was good for Nigeria in many ways and had it's disadvantages. Forget for one moment for the sake of debate the race of the people that colonized Nigeria. Say we were colonized by Kenyans. All i am saying is that post colonialism or so called "Freedom" has been a nightmare for millions of Nigerians. Many of our parents/grand parents would testify that pre colonial times were some of the best times of their lives. Education was sophisticated, the economy was strong,inflation was under control etc. Today i can make an argument that the average Nigerian in Nigeria is not "Free".

There is Police brutality, there is no recourse in the courts when you are wronged, there is no justice for the citizenry. This is level of black on black crime is at the highest level in the history of the country(Pre and Post colonialism). For the last 46 years we have run the country by ourselves right? We have tried democracy, we have done the military route, we have had dictatorships ETC and it has not worked very well. The topic is "Wasn't colonialism A good thing in a way"? I think that T4 is trying to argue in the Literal sense that it was good in many ways and i agree.

Now if you asked me if White's are Superior to Blacks, i will say that is an argument for another day, and ask if we could meet in bar in NYC and debate that over some domestic beer and peanuts, all on your tab.
PoliticsRe: Wasn't Colonialism A Good Thing In A Way? by OldGlory1(m): 10:57pm On Mar 21, 2006
T4

I think it is hard for you to make your argument because everyone is equating colonial masters, to white people and/or race. I think if people could look beyond race, and stick to the topic, your argument would become clearer.
PoliticsRe: Wasn't Colonialism A Good Thing In A Way? by OldGlory1(m): 8:59pm On Mar 21, 2006
@Demmy

I think that T-cash is making a very bold argument. The truth is that even in today's Nigeria, most people would rather work for a white man, than an indigene. I really think that Tony Blair would beat many respected Nigerians in a national election, if the vote was free and fair. You can blame colonialism for a lot of things, but the fact of the matter is that the country is worse off today than ever in our independent history.

He(Tcash) may not have made the most eloquent argument, but i think his point is very controversial, but sadly true.

Canadians Love Hockey, Americans love American football and Basketball, South American countries love Baseball and Soccer. I think Baseball will catch on in Nigeria. It is really not boring, you just need patience. Millions of People Love Baseball, and the WBC going on now in the US had the whole of Cuba, and Dominican republic glued to their TV's. Americans always tell me how Soccer is boring, but sports is all about rooting for your team,country people, or the underdog. I have played baseball, and i could not believe that how fast those pitches are coming at you.

What state in the USA can u get a DL in a Giffy? Prior to 911 maybe, but i am not sure it is as easy as you make it sound. What state are you in anyway? I have had mine for nearly 10years and i only do renewals. I have friends that have been here for 2-3years and still cannot get one with their international DL's. The requirements are getting even harder. Please tell me if you have the hook up.

RomanceRe: Can True Love Be Found Online? by OldGlory1(m): 7:55am On Mar 19, 2006
It depends on who is looking for love. I think you can meet someone online, and your vital statistics are very appealing, and your "First date or First meet" will seal or break the deal. The online thing is just to find a connection, more so than "Finding Love".

@Chinani
After reading your post again:

I will have to respectfully disagree with some of your comments. First of all, if i read all your post on this topic, i will be confused on what exactly you are trying to say. My point is that you do not have to have a degree in the USA to live above the poverty line. Only about 11-18% or so are considered poor, but only about 50% have degrees. That is simply my point. You cannot equate having a degree to poverty. There are many factors that make people fall short of the poverty line. There are truckers,sewage removers,security men, many police officers,nurses,garbage collectors,waiters, and millions of other blue collar workers whom do not have degrees, but are making some serious money. I misinterpreted you because your point seems to be evolving.My response is from your post on page one. I thought is was too blanket and misguided.

You were Offered season tickets to the Yankees? Wow that must cost a fortune, even if the seats were horrible. Please tell me you sold it. I hate the Yankees with a passion. I hate George the evil doer Stienbrenner and i hate how the team has a $200million plus payroll.
