All the dangerous, poisononous, venomous, and any other '........ous' wildliife (which we have all read of and which some people still base their migration decision on smiley) sure exist in Australia; however, if you don't live too close to bushlands or reserves or in the countryside, chances are you might never come across any of them in decades of living here.

I've only seen live roos along the roadside maybe once or twice, and that was driving at dawn in some regional towns- other times have only been roadkills.

To fulfill your 'citizenship requirements', just visit a wildlife park and touch a roo grin The ones there are just lounging and won't box you, haha.
Saw my first redback spider this week since moving Down Under about a year ago. Before moving here, Australia's poisonous creatures were my biggest fear.

It's not worth worrying about them. Attacks are rare, especially in the city.

*For those considering moving here

I am so sorry that you had to go through all of that. I am also so happy you came out strong and you are able to look back and pick the lessons. it will get better dear. I feel terrible complaining about somethings after reading through your story. I can't imagine myself alone with my baby...you are very strong!!!. God bless you. Hubby and I are dreading daycare for now but once he starts working we will have no option. its so expensive, the day-cares near my house are like $132 per day and in that range. Another fear I have is how my baby will be treated. I know they are nice people here but then again. please what was your experience with the day-care so far? thanks for sharing also...
It is highly unlikely that your baby will be maltreated so you shouldn't entertain any fear.

You should have noticed that children are very sacred in Australia.

Nice one. I have actually met a good number of people who just applied for jobs from their home countries and are now working in Australia.
It is worth exploring that option if you're looking to emigrate.

please I have a very important question, does anyone here have an idea of what it takes to open up a company in Aussie. My husband runs his business here and is concerned about its continuity. please help me answer this.
Even though the nature of his business is not disclosed, I reckon it won't be a big deal registering his business still.

I guess he currently runs a 'personal' business and not a Pty limited company. If so, all he has to do is register his business as a Sole Trader and get an Australian Business Number (ABN). This is done online (as simple as ABC). A Sole Trader is the simplest business structure. You don't necessarily need to register an Australian Company Name (ACN). However, if you would be receiving payments from the public for services or sales, a Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration would be required too.

If he intends to register a Proprietary (Pty) Limited company, he is better off going through an accountant.

Worry not about registering a business here. It is simple as opening a yahoo, sorry gmail account. You may want to speak to a professional for more details and benefits operating a registered business in Australia. You may be able to claim a portion of your bills, depreciation of property used in the business as tax deductions.

Camperdown appears close to Newtown. I have only been to Newtown once or twice but the number of blacks I saw in just one visit was more than I saw in seven months of living at Kingsford. It won't be long before you start bumping into Nigerians (and other Africans). Cheers.

hello everyone, my family and i are moving to Sydney in January, please any pointers to the best suburbs to settle. I have an infant, any ideas of good preschools around. Also what's the city like please. lastly would love to connect with Nigerians over there
In my opinion, there's no 'best' suburbs as such. It all depends on factors that are unique to each individual. Do you have a job waiting already? Where's your office at? What is your rental budget?

My advice is to come first As the unknowns become known, it wouldn't be difficult to figure out the 'best' suburb for YOU. A suburb change is not unlikely within your first six months. So a temporary accommodation might be the way to go until you find yourself the perfect suburb. Cheers.

The city is a better version of Lagos. There's the hustle and bustle associated with big cities. Lots of weekend fun activities for all categories of people. You will be spoilt for choice. No cause for any anxiety. You should be fine.

I am not too familiar with this; but i believe if you can indicate that she will be coming for Omugwo and that it is part of your tradition that a lady that just give birth must have her mother looking after her for 3months.

I believe they read widely and should understand that some tribes in Nigeria (i know of East) have such tradition.
And i don't waNt to believe that their "Citizen requested for someone to visit them and they turned the APP down.

Those who has passed such hurdles will soon come online to guide you more.
Tradition in itself isn't enough reason why it will be granted. As a PR/Citizen you are entitled to visits from family members. For this reason, a single guy/girl living in Australia can also invite his/her parents to come visit him/her. The Australian government does not wish to separate/isolate you from your immediate family.

Tourist Visa is sufficient in this case. She could do more than Omugwo for you sef.

Any one familiar with the entertainment (standup comedy type of thing) landscape in Sydney or Melbourne? I've got me a veteran of the game, looking to do his thing. Is there a market for it, especially within the Nigerian community? First show will be free. Any ideas or pointers?
LOL. Nigerian community dey? I am not sure if there's a market for it. It would have been easy if there was a strong Nigerian (or African) community that meets or communicates regularly. Information circulation for such shows would have been much easier.

However, anyone can pull anything off. Your friend has started well by conducting a market assessment. He should probably locate where there is a concentration of his target market (prolly include other africans). Get boots on the ground to guage their appetite for such shows. Is he a resident? What's the cost implication of testing the market? He could have the first mover advantage if he is able to pull it off. But you must understand this is not London or Paris or New York that have matured markets for things like this. Even Davido or Whizkid won't just hop on a plane to Sydney. cheesy grin

Hi Guys,

Am trying to open a NAB account from Naija and i came across this questions(Are you a resident of any other country for tax purposes?) yes or No , when i click yes it took me to another page with this (ou've indicated that you're a resident of one or more countries other than Australia and the U.S.) Do you have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) for this country? Should I to just click No and move on?

And for Commonwealth Bank no place to add our naija number or country.

Please someone should come to my rescue.
I believe it's now a requirement for opening a new account in Australia.

Q: Are you a resident of any other country for tax purposes?
A: YES (if you will still be earning income in Nigeria while in Australia or if you hold investments in Nigeria)

Explanation: Once you become a PR( and actually move to live in Australia permanently ) or the ATO (Australian Tax Office) classifies you as an Australian resident for tax purposes, you are taxed on all your worldwide income. You are expected to declare your income worldwide (Most immigrants don't declare actually grin cheesy ). For some countries, ATO exchanges information on taxes so if they have reasons to believe that you are earning income outside of Australia then you can be audited. Most importantly, it helps to prevent double taxation by the tax authorities of both countries where you pay taxes. ATO discounts taxes already paid in Nigeria while calculating your tax for the year. You may get a tax offset if you're paying more than necessary or extra tax if rate used in Naija is lower than your Aussie rate for that year. Nigeria has no such treaty with Australia for now. Tomorrow??

A: NO (if you are cutting all financial/investment ties with Nigeria).
Explanation: In this case, you wouldn't be having any reasons to pay taxes in Nigeria. For example taxes from rental properties, dividend income, capital gains etc will be non-existent. ATO will tax your Australian income only at your prevailing tax rate for that financial year.

Q: Do you have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) for this country?
A: Provide your TIN if you have it.

Please note that you might be asked to explain inflows into your Aussie account from overseas in any case after you are deemed an "Australian Resident for tax purposes" (and only if you are being audited).

I went into detail so you would know the legal implication of whichever answer you decide to provide.
Disclaimer: This is my understanding of the legal tax requirement in Australia. Do Your Own Research.

Long post alert!!! cheesy grin cheesy

My entry was pretty much similar to everyone's. Hassle-free no much questions asked. This actually blew my mind because I was expecting some form of interrogation from Immigration but none happened. No stamps....nothing. In my mind I was like 'abi this is a setup ni' like they were performing a psychological test or evaluation.
I proceeded to Customs for checks but those ones just asked me to pass my bag through scanner after informing them I had 'Cassava flakes' grin

As I made to walk towards the exit, I kept thinking this people will call me back o. How can I just enter your country to come and live permanently and you'll just make it easy like that.

A friend picked me up at the airport and took me to a house he had already secured for me till my arrival. The plan was to stay in his house but he had some important guests who came same day. He paid for a week. When I asked to refund he declined. I appreciated him sincerely. I had other friends I could stay with but I just decided I wasn't giving up my freedom jare . Let me just add that I have the best housemates anyone could wish for. We are like family mehn.

I have never traveled for such a long duration before so I underestimated coming jet-lag. I arrived late on a Thursday and didn't sleep till daybreak cry cry Next morning, I was at the bank to pick up my ATM card and update my account details (since I opened from Naija). Jet-lag effect continued o cry 2hrs to 3 hrs sleep at night only.

Meanwhile, back in Naija I applied for about 10 jobs only to receive rejection emails few days or weeks after. This got me irritated so I stop applying. There was no point (at least, so I felt).
By Sunday, I decided to make the best use of my wakefulness. I applied for about 6 or 7 vacancies and wrote the company info down in book. I also copied the name and contact details of the recruiting agent/hiring manager. Monday, I called a few of them and waited till Tuesday to call the others. I was told it was a bad idea that I would appear forward. ..... as far as I was concerned that one na story ..... Make I just follow human being word ... no be say I wan beg am for anything nah. I dey follow God word steady not to talk of person like me . Actually, na the koko be that.......God first

Me: Hello 'name of agent/recruiter' my name is 'name'. I applied for 'position' and would like to confirm you got my application.......or......this is just a follow-up call to my application for 'position'
Agent/Recruiter: "Sorry, what's your name again?"
Me: 'Name'
Agent/Recruiter: Just a second....."let me pull up your application".....or..... "let me have a look at your CV".

At this point, they ask a few questions about your CV, Visa status and a little summary of the job requirements and who they are looking for . Some may just go through your CV and ask that you give them some time to go through other CVs. One of them told me the position was filled and that he would forward my CV to his colleagues. Another(an agent) followed up our conversation with an email asking for further information so he could forward my CV to the hiring manager in the company. The appointed one (a recruitment manager for her company) asked me the bolded questions..... I called her on Tuesday. She called me back on Thursday to confirm my availability and schedule an interview for Friday. Sent an email later in the day that interview postponed till the following Tuesday.
The interview lasted about 30mins to 45mins. I left the company to return home. I was still waiting for a train when my phone rang.

Recruitment manager: Congratulations 'my name'. Blah blah blah.

Before I got home, all documents and link to start induction was already in my box. I was asked to resume on Thursday while they get my system and access ready. On Wednesday I just started feeling sick. Anyway, I banished the feeling in the name of Jesus. Luckily, my laptop wasn't ready so I was asked to resume on Monday. I have since started work sha. Is God not a good God?

I got a professional job in 12 days after I entered this country with almost nothing. God just keeps blowing my mind sha .

I entered this country with USD850 on my card and AUD70 cash in hand. I made up my mind Naija money was to remain in Naija. I was not willing to bring more than that. I have assets/investment that could be easily liquidated back home though if yawa wan gas
Let me add that it pays to change your naira to AUD at the Airport. The rate used was N280. Be mindful of the limit though AUD10,000 or you declare. Couples can hold like AUD9,500 each. No risk in holding cash in my opinion. I felt like protesting when I withdrew AUD with my USD denominated Mastercard. Thieffy thieffy banks them.

Loving life here already. Almost a month old now cheesy grin. System is built with everyone in mind (elderly, physically challenged, nursing mothers, children, women, men, cyclists, car owners, leggedesbenz .....everybody). Hmm, my eyes have seen things too o.......abi what do you think?.......my housemate went to church barefooted with short pants (as in knickers ..not pata o) because the church is behind our house. JJC like me was dressed in suit......felt uncomfortable throughout the service when preacher sef no dress reach me . I bumped into same guy about 100m away from home barefooted too. He was going to the Australian Post......... araoko sombori . Nobody send anybody and anybody send nobody .
You don't have to do a white-collar or professional job to make it in this country. In fact, some of the blue-collar workers earn more than their white-collar counterparts. Whatever makes you happy though.

My epistle don do

Have you completed assessment? Did your assessing authority reduce your years of experience? If not, you have nothing to worry about so long you have adequate and convincing documents to back up your experience claim.
NYSC not the determinant or reference here.

DIBP might ask for your NYSC cert but it matters not. Your story is not cooked.
I had a 2 months overlap changing from one job to the other because I used my leave arrears of about 2 months as my notice period. So I had already started working in my new organization before my official exit date from my previous job. Both EA and DIBP had no issues with this.
State your case as it is. Some claim experience even before, during and after NYSC.
