Blank, what you've said is totally true and I actually remember I know someone who was in that same situation. It was purely by accident I found out she attended the school (because I was friends with those who did and they never spoke to her, even though she was in their set). She's still more comfortable in her home environment than in the environment she was supposed to fit in. Some other kids, blend sometimes that you don't realise where they started from. And yes, children can be quite cruel. Sadly, people still look at things like old and new money, for certain things, less so for Business but more so for Marriage. Or they call them "Nameless", that is "that girl is nameless, I can't marry her". Stvpidly the person saying that may actually be poorer than the girl but has the comfort of a popular last name. Slangs like "Rich kid" are very common in the Dating scene. |
EfemenaXY:Hian! My sister, I had to ask "please what magical brand of crayons are the babies using to colour??". They wanted us to start checking out schools so we can put Baby E on some waiting lists. Those fees you mentioned, is how much LPS and St. Saviours and co, pay (and I hear LPS kids don't learn much and they're paying N2.1mil and St. Savours has a wait list longer than my arms). A sitting governor's wife came to wish them good luck and they have events like Tea parties (to teach etiquette) and Proms where they get big musical stars to perform. And almost every child had the "right lastname" . But at least the good thing was, their Headboy and Headgirl gave speeches and they spoke better than most university graduates. Infact I had to tell the boy "you're gonna end up with the title "President" behind your name one day, whether Senate or Group CEO". And I hear it's a good feeder school for too secondary schools like Loyola and co. And continues upwards to a good Ivy League. |
mitchyy:I don't know about Ibeju-Lekki, but in Lekki Phase 1, Lifeline Children's hospital is good. And if that is out of your pocket, then General Hospital Lagos Island is just okay. They are not close by to you but if you need to go to the hospital, then go. |
Some of us don't like e-books, gives us eye strain. I wouldn't know where to start looking even. |
Hi Tearoses, thorpido, ifyalways. I had one funny gist to give o but I thought I'd shut it. Meanwhile, I attended the Graduation Ceremony for a Nursery and Primary school and, let me put this way to describe the type of ceremony: the schoolfees for the Nursery school is N1mil per annum, per child and that is an affordable school o.Jokes aside, it made me think of how much social circle influence things. Whether we like it or not, there are certain places not accessible to an average person. Those kids in that school are not going to be running around looking for a job one day. They will be on the board of directors for companies and you will never hear of them (though enough of them today had the right lastnames, all the ones that open doors in Nigeria). They will be the people sitting round the table with Wale Tinubu and Dangote, allowing those ones to take the glory whilst quietly putting away a fortune. And they help themselves and marry themselves. Like my friend said "there are 5 lanes in Nigeria, you can cross from lakes 4-5 easier, lane 3 is a little harder, but lane 1 and 2 can only dream and imagine things". Btw, that N1mil for Nursery schoolfees, people actually told me it was affordable. When your kid attends a school where the entrance fee (not regular schoolfees) is N4mil ![]() |
bellville:I actually wrote a long reply about what you could do rather than this offer that would make an impact but then I thought "mehn..." Anyway, thanks for the offer. Take care. |
Chukazu:What stops your Governors from developing their states? At some point Lagos state was pushed away from Federal Funding and they survived. No-one has ever denied your state governments funding, why are your Governors not making you guys great? Nothing in this world stops your state government from developing your markets and industries. No-one will legislate against it. But the collective greed of all civil servants coupled with the self-serving behaviour has Igbos fooled into thinking they have an issue with the centre. Start demanding good schools and tax incentives from your state governments. Let every state raise funds and determine how they will spend it. All this ches0t-beating you guys are fighting here, your governor will attend the wedding of some Northern Oligarch, cut a deal with them, enrich himself at your expense, then come out to help you about that he is marginalized. |
tearoses:No it's not. It sounds wonderful. |
tearoses:Awww. Okay Do you sit outside to enjoy them? |
So I'm going to share more pictures of terrariums built by Taison Horticulture Centre. There are succulent terrariums so they require less water and an open container.
|
tearoses:I have no idea. I'm guessing they let the rain do their job? You seriously need to take a flower arranging class, for your roses! Even on YouTube you can get enough ideas. All you need is a sharp knife, a pair of floral scissors and floral food and some bleach. |
Bellville, please state the discount that you are offerig to Nairalanders right here. Let's know what it is. The words "a trial will convince you" has been so misused by Nigerians that I blank out once I read the line .Also, why can't I find more Children's books of fairytales and folklore written by Africans? There were more when I was growing up. Where is a confident writer, who can do research and gather old stories from the villages from different parts of the country, get an artist to illustrate it and make it available? I guess I may have to wait until another Lagos Book Fair happens this year. |
bellville:Guy, organise a sale. State that anyone who comes to your website and quotes the code "NAIRALAND" will get a 15% discount (and for Pete's sake don't jack up the price so that the discounted price ends up the original price). I assure you will move volumes and that eill make back whatever losses you have incurred plus get you new customers. Nigerians don't know the fundamentals of Business. They keep expecting their margins to increase without giving back. Those that do sales abroad have realised that people BUY MORE when there is a sale. I'm looking for books for my 1 year old and my nephew's and myself. You think I won't patronize you if you offer me a discount? But I beg you in the name of Jesus, don't quickly make the price N4500 then put the discount on top of it, so the sale price is the same as the original cost price. Don't be a "smart" Nigerian. |
So true it's painful. You will never see publishers like Cassava Republic make a push towards making their books available to all and sundry. Reading African writers has been made into an elitist performance: attending a book fair with the same upwardly mobile crowd and shelling out money for a book that should cost max N1000 |
They're fine and even though the girls are not full sisters, they have decided to make themselves a family (plus their children). My mother told them to forget about anything their father left to them and look forward, because none of them were suffering (at the end of his life, all his bills were being taken care of by his girls, the precious son only showed up when he wanted money). I don't know where the guy is and frankly I don't care. |
Let the girls carry their mother and leave and ignore that man. Of course, people not in their shoes will come and say otherwise but lucky for you, I have the benefit of experience backing me up. My cousins in your situation couldn't even attend their father's burial in peace (they needed escorts) because the step-brother in question seized the man's accounts and properties and was selling them off to raise money for his friend's election bid. The will had to be read in court because he swore to physically beat them up if they showed at the house (that they grew up in and helped maintain for their father whilst he pursued every skirt in the area looking for a son). When their mother dies, that man will not give a shi.t. Best they carry her away now. Leave the father, he has a new family. Let it be clear to him that he should not come back looking for his old family, since he exchanged them for another family. Dear men, cheating and polygamy is the cause of 70% of society's problems. It's not just sexx. Try and zip up with discipline. |
Millex:Nataraj is hard to work with. Start with just regular pencils and when it's going well, try Derwent brand. It's more expensive than Nataraj but you get what you pay for. |
Movingcoil:Let me know when you do. I'll give my support and any ideas I get freely. But what you can do is to identify the snakes present. In Nigeria we don't develop anti-snake venom. Ask at teaching hospitals and maybe think of contacting foreign bodies in South America (they have the most snakes and most development). Being them here, come to a lab (try in a university) and reverse-engineer the medicine. Produce and sell shots to villagers for N1000. Something affordable and try and get subsidies from WHO (they are in Nigeria). |
Hello, I saw your pm. I can't access my email for now, could you post here? Thanks. |
You know, this is sorta weird. Why force yourselves on people who don't want you? There are so many gay dating sites. It just seems like they want to be included by force. It's like "sure, we have our personal space but you guys cannot have yours". |
AREA!! |
blank:I knew a lady with oversupply so gangster, she used to donate it. She said her secret weapon was Stout beer. Kids, don't try that at home alcohol poisoning is real.Fenugreek, Mother's milk tea, pap and yes, small Stout are many ways to boost supply. |
blank:You're correct. But most of us won't pump ( imagine having to pump at 2am, after a long day). Breastfeeding is hard. |
blank:Ask yourself this: what does weaning entail? Isn't it when you go long hours without nursing the baby, your milk reduces with time? So going long hours without breastfeeding to measure the amount of milk produced is counter-productive. Because your body will assume the baby slept through the night and doesn't need to eat so much, so will adjust milk production to reduce. If your SiL had pumped at night, she would have produced more milk the next day. You have to empty the breasts of milk so it produces more: if you don't, the body will assume whoever is drinking the milk doesn't need as much and reduce production. That is the same theory behind Weaning: don't feed baby as much, baby stops drinking and the body stops producing. Exclusive Breastfeeding is hard. Baby E woke up one day and flat-out refused to drink 5 different brands od formula (she still hates it till today). It was either she starved or I worked on my milk supply. I stated earlier, Soymilk is an alternative to Lactose Intolerant babies but its less nutritious than other milks. But no doctor will recommend it over formula if there is no reason to take it. And some mothers who gave it to their babies found out the hard way about Soy allergies (babies twisting and grunting and screaming after every meal till they were taking to the hospital). We need to warn parents a lot and educate them. Even the pap that we add soybean, groundnut, crayfish and co to, it would have killed my niece. The first day she took groundnut was the first time we discovered she had a deadly Nut allergy and thank goodness for access to good healthcare. The good thing is that most kids outgrow their allergies. |
Soymilk is not safe for babies. Because people have given it and nothing happened to their child, they recommend it. It is NOT safe for babies and the way these things work is that 7 out of 10 babies will drink it and nothing will happen to them, but the last 3 will drink it and all sorts will happen. And you don't want your child to be amongst the last 3 (you won't know till it happens). Soymilk is not even as nutritious as other types of milk. Soymilk is only allowed if your baby is allergic to fortified cow milk. http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/tipmilk.htm Everyone can tell you "it worked for me and no side effects", most people won't come and say "this is how my baby suffered". |
That intense feeding frenzy is Nature trying to help the baby. That is how Nature ensures the newborn infant survives and gets enough to eat. It's very natural and only mother's with over-supply issues won't experience the feeding frenzy. Yomieluv, the milk baby is getting is not enough and the best way to make mother's body produce more milk is to suck a lot, so the milk glands communicate to the brain that the body needs to produce more milk. Which is why it stops after a while, because the body does so and the baby gets enough and doesn't need to suck as much to get a full meal. But here in Nigeria, we don't have lactation consultants to teach the theories behind Breastfeeding so we give the baby formula. Breastmilk production is a supply-and-demand thing: the more the demand, the more the supply comes. Once you reduce the demand the supply drops. Your baby may drink formula and then wake up at 4 months and flat out refuse it. And your wife will start all over again having to nurse till 6 months. http://kellymom.com/hot-topics/newborn-nursing/ http://www.lalecheleague.org/nb/nbsepoct08p44.html Sometimes I wish I could teach a Lactation class. But I would have to write the IBCLC exam for it (yes there is an International Board for Lactation around the world and strangely they don't exist in Nigeria but are in several countries. They grew and took over from traditional midwifery and traditional paeditric nursing assistant). |
cococandy:This is a GTB bank, in Ikoyi. It's covered in flower pots. It's really pretty. The reason most people don't know it's a GTB branch is because it's for Private Banking only and they don't put up a sign outside to let people know it's a bank.

dsunmade:I'm not the poster who made that comment, please re-read. Need this elusive great internet that won't cost twice the price of DSTV premium. Which network is it? I am dead serious!!!Take a look at your lifestyle and location: there are options for those checking and for some people, DSTV doesn't show all we watch. |
Angel Trumpet Lovely ornamental plant. It's very fast-growing and attractive. But there is a huge warning: its toxic. As in, there are reported deaths yearly from eating any part of this plant. So be careful. It's an outdoor plant and it's endangered in the wild. It has very attractive flowers and smells wonderful at night. Give it Sun and plenty of water and fertiliser and watch it bloom.

To every one saying "free them, they are hungry", it says in the article that these men are.notorious Elephant poachers. No-one kills elephants for its meat, the most prized part of the elephant is it's tusk for Ivory (which is illegal in the entire world). The Chinese however have a huge appetite for Ivory and smuggle it into their country for big bucks. And since Indians are smart enough not to kill their elephants, guess where those Chinese came to get their illegal Ivory? Same place and country they do illegal mining in. And antelope tusks and antelope head is a nice prize for foreign Game hunters. So, do you still think these "poor hungry" criminals should be given a sack of rice to go with their meal? Or do you now see a little truth? |
Now, before you swear for the devil let me show you how attractive the Ponytail Palm can look as decor. Its very popular as Bonsai (Japanese Miniature Grdening Technique).
|
Ponytail Palm This is not a true palm, but looks like one. It's part of the Lily family. It's one of the slowest growing plants ever. It's an outdoor plant but if you put it in really bright light, it should do find indoors. Now, when I say it's a slow grower, I mean, it's a really really slow grower. Ponytail palms can live up to 20 years old (longer than some people's marriages). And they start off as very small plants then grow a few feet high and pretty tall. Now, this is interesting: the younger they are, the cheaper they are to buy. The older they are, the more expensive they are to buy (because it takes literally over a decade for them to grow nice). A fully grown Ponytail palm retails for N250,000. Yes, you read that right: a quarter of a million Naira. For a single plant. All the pictures below are from Taison Horticultural centre and they informed me that they are the only people selling the Ponytail palm in Lagos. So, gwan borrow-pose with it ![]()
