Freddonance: My brother, most of the time specimen is sent to the lab, it's not intended to make diagnosis.. Some diagnosis are clinical. The most important part of patient's management is diagnosis. When a diagnosis is made, anyone can give medication. no doubt some diagnosis are clinical.nevertheless, there are times things do not add up and you are lost as at what could be wrong with a pt and u start ordering for different investigations, other times, u come up with differentials nd by investigations, start eliminating to get a definitive diagnosis. no doubt history taking and clinical examination are critical in arriving at a diagnosis but u just can't take out the importance of laboratory investigations |

Au79: at the bolded.. .now wat business does an orthopedic surgeon, a psychiatrist, a plastic surgeon, a neurosurgeon, have with your 18000 different tests order than the base line investigations that even a medlab technician can conduct . no one is downplaying your profession oga , its just the truth..you guys are not as relevant as you portray yourselves to be...a physician doesn't need a lab result to resuscitate a patient... like I said in one of my earlier post, lab results are just for confirmation as the physician already has an idea of wat the result will eventually turn out to be and most atimes ,treatment starts even before the arrival of the test result( especially microbiological tests) ..my patient presents with bleeding through orifices, fever of which other causes as been excluded and history of rat bite who has the time to wait for one yeye lab result that can take almost a week( wen my patient has days to live if I don't intervene) before I start emperical treatment of lassa fever wen I know am more dan 90% certain dat the virology result wud agree with my clinical suspicion... oga even in the lab, interpretation of results is done by pathologist..there is a reason for that...I can remember a time wen a patient was sent to a peripheral hospital for a test...the lab scientist submitted a result of haemoglobin con. of 8 g/dl and for same patient(pregnant woman who was a primigravida)packed cell volume of 44%...now such a result wud never leave that lab for submission had it been it was reviewed by a pathology... oga pls stop qoutin and giving us history, you and I know how these things work practically( that is if you are practicing already) do not downplay the essence of lab tests in clinical practice. if u were certain about a diagnosis, there ll be no need sending for investigations. often times , you come out with differentiall diagnosis nd would require investigations to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. conditions could present with similar symptoms yet require different management approach . you can be very well mislead without a laboratory investigation or a wrong result. have respect for these guys. this kind of attitude nd lack of respect or downplay on the importance or contribution of other health professionals in patient care is a major problem on the part of med docs that calls for concern and needs to b addressed. you can't do much without laboratory investigations. pt's re not lab rats to be experimented on; they shldnt b treated by trial nd error. |

See ehn all these contentions is borne out of the attitudes of most Nigerian med docs in looking down on other health professionals and wanting to stifle their growth. In developed climes where there's mutual inter professional respect, u hardly would find things like this happening. Maybe the attidue by most med drs in Nigeria is because of exclusive privileges given them tru d years in the health sector hence u HV pple contend for same. I think when most med docs learn to respect other professionals and allow them the room for growth in their various fields and practice to the extent of their trainings, then we'll have less of these contentions in the health industry in nigeria |

ultron12345: Johesu have started again...... Rubbish
It's no ones fault their childhood dreams to become medical doctors were crushed by jamb. If you want to become minister of health, no-one is stopping you, just purchase jamb form and apply for medicine. this is a foolish statement and void of sound logical reasoning . so everyone in the health sector desired being a medical doctor? should those who doesn't have any intention being a medical doctor go and apply to study medicine for a ministerial position because they would be taught in one of the clinical rotations skills required in becoming a health minister? it's very logical to assume that if a person from a certain profession is allowed to call the shots in matters that affects other professionals in same industry, that person would most likely show allegiance to his profession first and bias comes in such instances as regards decisions taken |

to be fair , health ministerial position doesn't require clinical skill and it shouldn't be a privilege to a particular health profession. different professions make up the health sector and any person qualified for the task should be given nd not denied based on their profession . |

Reinah: I'm 20 years old ok . you are having issues upon prolong use of your glasses cos it probably isn't the right prescription. glasses re safer than Contact lenses. Contact lenses are safe as well if you re hygiene conscious and u stick to d recommended usage. you should go to a good eye clinic for a re examination . your not being able to see faces clearly at certain distances could be due to the refractive error most likely or something more; but only when you go for an eye exam can you know what exactly is the cause . shalom |

Reinah: Good day, Doc.
I had been short-sighted since 2015 but lately, I noticed some difficulties seeing the faces of people about 10-15 feet away from me. I would see their body but the face will be blurry. Is this also part of the former problem or something new?
Also, I don't like wearing my glasses because my eyes get painful and my head aches when I wear it for long. Do you think contact lens would be safer.? Thank you how old are you? |

ntyce: @ optm,
My kid of 1year 4 months had swollen eyes with pus discharge, took him to hospital and the doc admitted him saying he would need close monitoring. He place placed on Metronidazole, the pus stopped and redness also cleared but still swollen. 3 days later, a consultant came and prescribed Rocephin saying the initial wasn't as effective as it should. He has been on the Rocephin now for 3 days with no remarkable difference.
Pls do you have any further recommendations as I'm sick of the boy being in the hospital. hi there. what was the diagnosis? orbital cellulitis? give it time. drugs doesn't work by magic . I m sure your baby would be fine and if there isn't improvement as you say, the attending consultant would know what next is to be done. just be patient with them and allow them do their job. wishing your baby quick recovery |

The point is that I'm someone that uses Computer a lot so I suspect it could be from there but sadly I can't stay away from Computer at this time. Don't really know how to manage the situation. you can't manage it yourself. u'll need to visit ur eye doc to help you get better. like I stated earlier, there a number of conditions that could present with such symptoms and only by an eye exam would one be able to tell what actually could be the cause of yours and after which a treatment plan can be proffered. why don't u just make out time and schedule a visit ? |

samuelson06: Hello Doctor, I'm having challenges with my eyes and I believe you can help me. I do feel as if there's a tiny object in my eyes and it itches a lot when I try checking what's there. Sometimes, tears do drop from the eye and other times the tears becomes perperish and I would have to wash my face before I feel okay. Some days, when I wake up from sleep, I noticed i can't really open my eye lids (kind of) because it's gummy until I wash my face. What's wrong with me please? there re a number of eye problems that could present with these symptoms you re having and it would have to take an examination to corroborate your complaints in order to know what is and how best to go about the treatment. I advice you go see ur eye doc to have it examined. |
