That is not a tangible reason to be broke.

You don't need to steal to be rich as a politician in Nigeria not to talk of the 4th citizen of Nigeria.

Only the allowances they earn can make any one at that level to be wealthy. There is too much money they earn aside the ones they still loot.

I think he wasn't prudent with money
Thank you
You just spoke my mind.

oluwaseyi0 here just registered his own marriage in that same Nigerian court and was not required to write Letters of consent in his case. So, how can you claim facts here when what you state is out of the norm? undecided
That is his own experience and which is why in my initial comment I asked if the letter was not required without giving any additional information. In subsequent interactions, I also made it clear that the essence of that question is to establish if that is a uniform practice in all locations.
FamilyRe: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by otomatic(m): 7:51pm On Nov 20, 2023
Kobojunkie:
Your supposed experience is marred by what is likely ignorance of the law in Nigeria though. undecided

What is referred to as court marriage is the registration of marriage with the courts. You wrote letters of consent because you were not aware of the fact that a letter of consent is only required in the case that at least one of the partners in the marriage is underage. The Law hasn't changed much in many decades and it is available online for all who would like to learn to educate themselves. undecided
Once again, so called "Court marriages" are not registered in a court but in a marriage registry.
Also a marriage registry is not in a court.
The registrations are not done online yet but offline.
Underage marriage is not permitted by law in Nigeria, as such, registries cannot be providing cover for the practice.

The way una dey condescend towards women... ehn! So, in your head, an adult woman is the property of her parents, and consent is required from them hence the reason why you had to write this Letter of consent in your case and the case of your sister? undecided

2. Clearly, Ignorance is to blame for you feeling you needed to write a letter of consent when you got married and for your adult sister too. You didn't realize that consent is only required when an underage individual is to enter into marriage. The registry does not provide cover. Rather, what it provides is legality to the decision made by two consenting adults. undecided

3. I was right after all! This is all of ignorance on your part. lipsrsealed
It's okay.
An adult woman is not the property of her parents yet the groom will be given a list to fulfil during marriage, else they are not married but cohabiting.
I don't condescend on women, but facts are facts.

Look, everyone who passed through that process in that registry fulfilled the same requirements. These requirements were not tailored to specific individuals. And you must fulfil them for your application to be accepted except maybe you are not interested in being married there.

I hope you know that underage marriage is not permissible in the south. Even registry cannot cover that.

1. Post an image of it make we see abeg!. undecided

2. There are no two different Nigerian laws... The Marriage Act in Nigeria is the same act that is used and referenced by even Nigerian embassies everywhere in the world. So, don't deceive yourself into thinking one court can do its own thing while others can also do their own thing. The Law is unified for a reason. undecided
I will have to look for it, which may not be practicable as such things are under the care of the wifey.

"Court Marriage" is in a registry not a court per se. It can only be dissolved via divorce processes in a high court.

And I'm sharing my experience not theory. So I cannot be deceiving myself about a process I underwent.

My parents registered their marriage more than 3 decades ago in that very same Nigeria, and they never had to submit Letters of consent from anyone. undecided

I had never heard of anyone having to submit Letters of consent seeking permission from parents until now. And now I know why. Because those letters are only required in the case the couple in question or at least one partner is below the age of consent, which makes sense. undecided
Change is constant. And processes are dynamic. Maybe then it was not an issue. Maybe now men are absconding with people's daughters and the families are making trouble.
I mean how else will you explain a topic such as this. Someone wants to marry without paying bride price and wants the registry to provide cover.
Wait until a powerful family sues the registry staff for giving out their daughter(trafficking) or whatever they can come up with.

She had all of that yet she didn't read the instructions to learn that consent letters are only required for those under age of 18, a fact verified by even the Nigerian consulate? undecided
Something that the requirements are in a leaflet form. I wonder what other instructions you will read other than the one the registry has given you.
It is not Nigerian consulate that will perform this marriage but the registry. So just follow instructions from them.

I am afraid you have been busy writing and submitting letters that are unnecessary then. Even the Nigerian embassy link there explains that consent letters are only required for people under 18 years of age. undecided
Lol. Wait first make the registry people tell you to go do your marriage for Nigerian embassy.

Is your sister under 21 or 18? undecided
She is not. Someone with an Msc, who graduated from a Nigerian public University with all the strikes cannot be under 21 na.
That my question needed practical answers based on experience to judge if the practice is uniform throughout the federation.

Kobojunkie:
Again, what you claim makes no sense considering the Law with which you claim your marriage was supposedly registered. Are you by any chance able to give us the information on the courts were your marriage was registered and on what date so I can maybe do some investigating into this "letter of consent" which you claim you had to submit even with witnesses present at your union? undecided
Sorry, I can't divulge personally identifiable information.
But, you don't submit this letter with witnesses present. You submit it at the point of applying to the registry for marriage. After which, they publish the notice of marriage with passport photos of the couple for 3 weeks.
At the end of the 3 weeks, a date is given for your marriage and that is when you show up with witnesses/guests.
My sister is passing through the exact same process in the same state but In a different registry in a different town.

I am afraid your letter of consent claim violates the marriage act which you claim you submitted them towards unless those letters were instead meant to serve in place of the presence of live witnesses to the union. undecided
The fact that Article 12 above makes clear that every man and woman has the fundamental right to be married literally means no consent/permission is required from any others to enter into such a union. undecided
There were live witnesses to the marriage bro.
My wives parents, my parents, siblings and friends were present on the occasion. That letter was extracted as part of the application process and before the 21 days notice period.

Was it instead the case that you first did your traditional before you then approached the courts to register said traditional marriage within the statute given? undecided
No. I married under the marriage act (not under customary) before my traditional marriage and church wedding.
In fact I was legally married for some weeks before my traditional marriage and then the church wedding a week later.
As a matter of fact, the registrar asked about the bride price and requested for my father inlaw to submit a written consent before the notice was published for 21 days.

The same scenario also played out recently with my sister. She had the statutory marriage first before traditional and church. I was required to submit a written consent before the registry published their marriage notice.

So, you can see why I asked that question. I'm curious to know if that practice is what is generally obtainable across the country.

Letter of consent for two adults getting married to each other? Are you people for real? undecided
Very real. I've been married for more than a decade and it was a requirement. Recently I also wrote a letter for my sister.
So what are you talking?
The registry recognises 3 kinds of marriages one of which is customary.
You want them to join you without asking questions, so you can run away with somebody's daughter?
Or you think the registry is not staffed by Africans who know what is right?
FamilyRe: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by otomatic(m): 6:05pm On Nov 20, 2023
GenderMix:
This is not correct. You can do court wedding without paying bride price. Infact when i did mine, only 2 of my friends were present to sign as witness. Our parents were absent because we felt it was unnecessary but for them to travel down.

However, bride price /traditional wedding is what our culture recognize. It has to do with recognition of the couples by the families. It's the most important as far as nigerian families are concerned. You may be deprived of certain traditional benefits if you're not traditionally married. Although those benefits will not prevent you from living your normal lives.

If you are a fan of African traditional culture, then you need to do it to promote the culture
Did the registry not require a letter of consent from the bride's parents?
CrimeRe: Navy Destroys 15,775 Litres Of Stolen Crude Oil In Ondo by otomatic(m): 8:44am On Nov 20, 2023
Something that they will burn like 100 litres and sell the rest on the High seas.
Why will they burn the oil if not for the purpose if hiding something?
Oil that can be returned to the national oil company instead of being used to destroy the environment in the name of burning.
They are using the burning to hide the fact that most of the seized oil was resold to rogue companies on the High seas.
BusinessRe: Digital Loan Sharks: Shaming, Recovery Techniques Pushing Nigerians To The Brink by otomatic(m):
The loan apps did not compel anyone to borrow. Live within your means, you say no.
Your precious personal data is now collateral. Some people even borrow with no intention of paying back. Worst is when you know that an entity is not regulated and is illegal yet you deal with it thinking you can outsmart it.

I recall how banks had a shortcode for instant credit some years back. People could just dial the code and borrow up to a maximum prequalified amount. Right now, almost all of them have suspended it because of too much default from borrowers. The various account officers are now left with the tasks of recovering loans they did not originate.

I also recall how banks were doing instant refund of dispense errors less than 20K. People went around lodging fictitious claims and that service had to be suspended to the detriment of genuine and honest customers.

People don't like good things here. I'm sure these defaulters are owing everyone including friends, family, neighbours, church, shop keepers, and others that they have not paid. That is why nobody lends to them again. Let them deal with the illegal apps and learn.
