Now you get it. A recommendation letter is considered higher than your certifications and Competence in most of the Nigerian SMEs. The sad reality is that it's already finding it's way into the so called Multinationals. There are more qualified people than there are jobs. Whatever qualification you claim to have, someone else (Maybe 10 or even 15) possess it too

For starters and upcoming gees, when breakfast is served(yes it must come) channel all your emotions to work. Work on yourself, your finance and rebuild yourself.
Get a woman that love and respect you not a woman you love. Be and stay ahead of your woman and by all means, don't be emotional when dealing with a woman.

I remembered a man in those days when I was a bachelor, I used to go to one Igbo canteen and anytime I see this man, he always eating goatmeat peppered soup and malt. Jokingly, I saw the wife one day and told her to learn how to prepare peppered soup so that the amount the husband is spending for the peppered soup will be reduced thinking he always buy for his family too. The wife just laughed and said, the husband only enjoys himself without considering her and their two children then. I was amazed because the man is a leader in the church and from that day, the man lost the respect I have for him.

I think your mom should also stop blackmailing you; from your first story, you are not doing 'well' either; you just have the determination and tenacity to get out of your family's proverty.

You are not El Shaddai; you cannot carry everyone else's burden in the family. You need to reduce the black tax else it would drag you under.

I don't know how old your mom is but if she is still capable of working, let her meet all these NGOs into widow care and get small capital to do something to feed herself and the kids.

Next your siblings should make themselves useful. They can learn to plait hair and do so for their mates, do tutorials for a fee (if brilliant), do domestic cleaning for a fee, attach themselves to their lecturers/teachers to sell handouts and all those other things students assist lecturer with (they would get stipends) in return; work in new site for daily pay and some other things they can do to earn money.

Unfortunately, they were not born with silver spoon so they must apply themselves and stop waiting for you to spoon feed them. I deliberately listed things they need little or no capital to start so that raising capital doesn't become another stumbling block.

God bless the man who helped you; I pray he would also find helpers in his time of need Please engage the man again if he can get something for you so you can climb up the ladder out of your circumstances.

I pray that God who is the burden bearer would take your burden off you and crown all your efforts with success. Don't forget to get close to God in prayers and righteousness; He would lead you out of this mess and direct your path. Amen.

See at this point I don't understand most Nigerians anymore. Every time I offer a helping hand to Nigerians they turn to your enemy. I don't understand the dynamics behind it. The whole interaction just gets very awkward after that . It's like they hate you for " humbling " them. It never fails.

But the ones who have a pure friendly relationship with you? Are the ones you haven't given anything yet. So in my everyday life person to person I try to do charity because charity covers a multitude of sins and givers never lack.

So this is a recent case study. This young guy , a security guard was sent by the company to guard the house I stay. I would say about 19 years old. One night I went grocery shopping and I was going through the gate he runs over from across the street and told me he was hungry. So I said what does he eat ? He said he likes indomie . So I went to my place and brought out like 5 indomie and 3 soft drinks and 2 sardines and gave it to him. He thanked me.

Every 2 days when I go out I would do small grocery shopping for him. Indomie and biscuits and soft drinks sardine or bread. A few times when I go out to get bottled palmwine for myself I would get him palmwine or orijin beer he likes. But I started noticing his entitlement behaviour like on the days when I don't buy him anything he would time when I Am coming home and sit beside my door when he sees me carrying my own groceries and he would be looking at me like he is depressed. And he would Always be watching me to see if I am going grocery shopping and he would hang around the car to see if I would come out with grocery.

Let's just say this guy got ridiculously stalkerish and so I called him up 4 days ago and asked him has his salary being paid yet? He said yes. Because am thinking all these things he is doing because he is new on the job and has no money and is hungry so I put up with it for like a month.

But once he told me yes that he had being paid, I in a roundabout way told him I don't tolerate the stalking. That he doesn't need to be following me or waiting on me. Anyway since that day this guy just turned into an enemy. Someone who I have been buying groceries for for almost a whole month just turned hostile like that. Now all that time I was buying him grocery he would do ass kissing stuff like when I drop my black trash bag outside my door he would take it to the bin outside for me but since that day the guy just bone my trash bags lol.

Anyway the point here is this ? You create an enemy unknowingly out of those you help - not family members- because I think it is humiliating for them and they despise you for it, so if you are going to offer charity don't offer it to people you have to see on a daily basis. Just find a beggar in the street that you would never see again. Nigerians are funny, they beg you for money but they hate you for giving them that money especially if it is not a life changing amount.

It's like a guy I gave 5000 naira one time and he thought it was an insult, just a regular guy who I don't even know like that, God is my witness, which 5000 is no money but it was just for him to buy beer for the weekend, you can get 15 beers with 5000 when I gave it to him.

So out here on these streets you have to be savage. No more mr nice guy ooo lol. basically if you are not offering guys over 100k just forget it cuz they would hate you. look for a real beggar who would appreciate 5000 or 1000.

I'd aced all tests and interviews for a middle management position with a financial consulting firm (big one).

It was time to meet the MD for the last chat.

HR and his secretary already told me I had the best evaluation results the company ever saw (wasn't surprised ) and the man was looking forward to seeing me.

Myself, oh..well... Let's get it started.

Had a zoom meeting. MD was a young dude taking over from his pops..

Introduced myself etc etc and then, Bam! He asked me-. So... They told me you are smart. I saw your scores. If you are that smart how come you did not graduate with a first class?

Me - excuse me?

He goes ahead - you graduated with 4.4... (looks at transcript) ...how come..you didn't make a first class?

Touchy subject for me cos it was blood sweat and tears. But I smiled and answered , well, if circumstances were different .. I might have, but that right there is what I have.

Him "hmm". Your cv says you've held this position at this place. I know the chairman. Are you sure or I should call him.

I shrug. and smile- As you please sir.

He grunts , then- " you look like trouble. You seem arrogant. You are not humble. The impression I get is almost like you are doing is a favour by attending this interview.

I'm shocked and now pissed. So.. I say...well, sir. I am humble but also confident in myself and my abilities. You have a wrong impression of me (but in my head I'm thinking ... Bros.. if you have nothing reasonable to ask me, Ogbeni... Don't waste my time)

Next - Are you married? No.

Why- Personal reasons

Him-This is an interview. Answer the question.

I smile - Personal reasons.


He looks at me - I don't think we need a secretive person for this role.

I smile- I thought confidentiality was one of the top requirements for the role.

He's pissed but nods.

He asks me- what do you know about this company, I tell him.

He sneers and talks down at me saying I didn't do my homework bla bla.

Last last, he asks if I have any questions , "just 1" I respond.

So I ask. From your perspective as the MD , what can you tell me about your company and its value proposition?

Dude is gobsmacked, he tells me that's a stupid question.

I smile (and decide to be an A.hole) - Is it? I respond? It's your company, is there...a probl. Well never mind. I thought it will be best to hear it from the visionary himself.

Somewhat flustered... He struggles and stammers through 3 minutes of talking rubbish.

Manages to end the interview with some platitudes.. but I already knew it wasn't gonna happen....plus Nah! I don't want to work here.

Looking back that was the most annoying.

Only the smart ones will notice the hidden camera in the room and knows that while sitting down there it is already your interview

In actual fact anyone who cannot afford to pay his gateman at least 80K has no business employing a gateman but most Nigerians like to show-off that they have domestic staff who depend on them for sustenance
