🎥 Succession S01 - 3 (2018) = 7.8/10 ✔️

They talk too much it's exhausting. Need more action, less talking.

Believe me buddy, you are missing out on nothing. It follows his Hollywood tortured star trope from whiplash to lala land and now this, first man is the only exception. The movie was entertaining as it relied on shock value rather than an immersive plot, some scenes were literally useless but I wouldn't call it good, just entertaining. I love Chazelle but Babylon wasn't it. Poor Margot, she's had three back to back flops
Ironically, it is next on my watchlist and since i have already copped it, i might as well go ahead and see it.

Plus I haven't seen a bad Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz combo, so if for anything, i might enjoy the OST and score.

You know ball chief! The entire OST was so trippy and good. Gave good credence to the scenes.

Omo, you're on a run of classics o. grin
Maan...yes o.. They are a safe bet for me grin

Filmmakers are policed too much these days, too many agendas devouring the art, critics pan for feminism, Lgtv, racial and recently disable people representation in one movie, leading to more bland movies than actual good ones. Even older materials that are adapted to modern movies are having their screenplays reworked to fit these agendas.

It had broad humor and absurd situations... hallmarks of a slap stick imo.

Painfully.
That occult nonsense tire me ehn.... They even started doing remakes of the past occult films. There's that one I watched with Ramsey Noah and the new guy sequel some years back. It was decent for a Nollywood flick with all the improved camera work, Cinematography and all but the story still same old shït.
That film and is it Chief Daddy that broke the camel's back. Them just dey repeat wedding party and rich people tropes up and down. Na then I wash hand from Nollywood. 😭

Remember we first discussed it here that Netflix and Amazon coming into the game would most likely up our game. Financiers here are not ready to back "risky" projects with no formula of comic stars.
I'm glad we're improving and finally our movies will become globally recognised like our Music is now.
Better days ahead.
The meteoritic rise of our music shocked me. I couldn't be caught listening to a 9ja song circa 2011 down, but these days, my playlist is like 60% Afrobeats.

And our movies is heading in that direction. Sadly we have empty airheads as leaders who would rather keep us in the trenches. Nigeria is full with so much talent in all spheres of life and with Abundant natural resources, we should be a world super power and i am not even joking.

RE: Horrible Bosses (2011)

"Slapstick comedy gold"

I miss the era of slapstick comedy flicks with shitty critic ratings and Horrible Bosses is one of the finest.

It set out as 3 friends with horrible bosses and the only solution they came up with was to eliminate these bosses. What followed is a series of comical manuvers that will keep you giggling throughout 😁.

With Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Jason Bateman starring with support from Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Collin ferrell and Jamie Foxx, it was actually an ensemble cast.

They don't make comedy movies like this anymore, totally miss this era.

"Brotherhood" 2022

"Nollywood flick? AK-47? RPG? Exploding cars? Grappling hook gun? Smoke grenade?... Micheal Bay come outside now!

This Nollywood take at the heist genre piqued my interest and i am left more than half satisfied.

The directing and cinematography was so good done by a budding film maker from Uganda, Loukman Ali, who i have a lot of respect and hope for. you can see a clear difference with proper action sequence and use of Hollywood level action props.

The writing was done by Jadesola Osiberu who did "Isoken" (2017), and it showed that his niche is most likely Romance/Drama caused he almost ruin the movie it a romance sappy side plot.

The cast was mix of ex BBN alumni and established actors. I doubt if actors in this clime get coaching or attend film schools. Only Tobi Bakare and OC Ukeje stood out well enough with thier acting and gave a convincing interpretation of thier roles. Absolutely loving the love for Pidgin English as a norm for dialogues in our movies lately, another brilliant poignant use of it here.

The score was perfect and akin well enough to what is obtainable in a top tier action flick. A roommate of mine from UNI was part of the sound engineering team and they did a great job.

The problem i had with Shanty Town ( 2023) still cropped up here, they made the ending act so ambiguous to stick a proper landing, and they just resulted putting something about what happened to the characters that is even more ambiguous on the post credit.

All in All, it is a very decent watch and the nice action sequence and directing is enough to see it through. Nollywood has my full attention in 2023 ⚠️.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Glad i used the money i kept for seeing this at the cinema back in November, to eat grill fish!

Stunning cinematography and incredible set design and Tenoch Huerta as Namor was lit, i would like to see the character again in a better written project, but that was just about it.

The movie suffered from a severe identity crisis, wanting to be an ode to Chadwick Boseman coupled with an unnecessary feminist agenda and a need for Latino representation which ultimately made for a bad mix and lead nowhere.

The dialogues were haphazard and was not help in anyway by the accent. Almost next to nothing replay value this.

Still think MCU peaked after "Avengers:Endgame" (2019) and this has done nothin to change that view, just like the other garbs that has come before it.

Criminally underrated.
Happy for Damien Chazelle.
Man still got it.
3hrs run time in 2023? Damien Chazelle is a fine film maker but my attention span recently have been on the edge so I'm avoiding movies over 2hrs runtime except it's absolutely necessary, so please was this worth the ridiculous runtime?

Got back into reading fiction again during covid. Maintained it all the way till mid 2021 and then my work/studies just ate that window up too.
Been trying my best to carve out a new fictional reading time since.
Even great adaptations aren't enough to stop me from wanting to read the source.
Piled up books to read during the lockdown eventually just settled for movies and series instead, and since then I haven't been able to fit books into my schedule.

Books tell a much better story than motion picture, written words describes it best letting your imagination run wild. Hopefully, i will get back to reading once my affairs are in proper order.

The phantom thread 7.5/10

I was skeptical about seeing this movie at first because it’s tagged as a “romance”. In fact, the only reason I decided to see it was because Daniel Day Lewis starred in it. I know him as a great actor and thought that even if I don’t enjoy the movie, I would at least get to enjoy great acting. And boy am I glad to have taken that decision.

This movie isn’t your regular “romance”. The movie at first is made to look like it’s going to be all about a lady trying to get a man to learn to love properly (you know? The usual cliche associated with romance). But it takes an unexpected turn as it progresses. This unexpected turn infused a bit of thriller to the movie thereby making it really good.

The acting was top notch. Daniel Day Lewis bodied his role as usual.

I’m giving this a 7.5 and not an 8 because I wasn’t satisfied with the way it ended.

I would recommend this movie to anybody who is a lover of good movies.
It was Daniel Day Lewis's final movie before retirement. Man is a genius actor. Top tier movie like you said. It was up for 6 Oscar including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor eventually winning for best costume design i think.

Baddestguyp:
the books are masterpieces...

I only read the first book and it's on my all time list of beat novels I've ever seen...
Including some Sydney Sheldon

Mario Puzo and Sydney Sheldon write in similar ways imo

Anyway the movie is a masterpiece...same as the Novel

If you read novels, you should check out James Hadley Chase novels and Sydney Sheldon novels

I've read all of Sheldon and almost all of JHC
Man the book is a masterpiece and Francis Ford Coppola been a master filmmaker brought it fantastically to motion picture.

Mario Puzo was a delightful writer in the crime genre i consider "The Godfather, The Sicilian and Omerta" is holy trinity.

I grew up in a household were your Christmas wishlist would most likely be granted if you request for novels and books and daily newspaper reading was a thing. I still have my Dad's archive of books and newspaper from yester years.

From Anezi Okoro's "One week, One Trouble" to Chinua Achebe's "Things fall apart" to John Grisham's "A time to kill" to Micheal Palmer's "The Patient" to Stephen King's "Full dark, No stars" to Dan Brown's "Digital Fortress' to Dean Koontz's Mr Murder ( He's my favourite author btw, i have read countless of his books). I voraciously read them all across multiple genre.

But recently "Life" has happened and for about 2 years now I don't seem to have the legs, time or concentration for reading again🥲, it's so bad that i am actively hoping the books i have currently now that i haven't read, are adapted into movies soonest to save me the hassle lol 😭😭...but i seriously hope i find my reading spark again 🙃

Mario Puzo's The Godfather (1972)

Look how they massacred my boy!

I copped a remastered version of this mobster cult classic recently and i am reminded once again why this is such an all time gem.

It faithfully tells a story about the Corleone family, a scilian mafia family in New york headed by Don Vito Corleone played by Marlon Brando and i don't think they could have casted the character better, his voice sounding like he had a gum in it all through and his mannerism can never be duplicated and he duly bagged an oscar for the role which he sadly declined in protest.

At the centre of the Corleone family is a budding Michael Corleone played by a very young Al Pacino, whose descent into the mobster ways of the family comes from a place not so evil. He starts by just wanting to protect his family, then begins to justify actions against crooked cops and vicious mobsters. That slippery slope, that corruption of purity, it's a tale as old as time, the original sin if you will. The Godfather tells this over an extended time period. It is not a film of constant movement, it is one of set pieces with huge jumps in between. Every moment counts. Every shot is among the greatest of all time. Every scene avoids patronising or insulting the audience. It is all excellent. The final act sees Micheal Corleone been handed the riens of the family as "Don". The scene that morphed him into the dark side completely was a thing of cinematic beauty, Two scenes juxtaposing each other, One of the scene shows Michael Corleone literally renouncing the Devil in Church and the other scene showing his caporegime eliminating the five dons of the other mafia families and all the other enemies of the Corleone family on his orders. The scenes were creatively poetic as it was religiously devilish!.

For that era, The cast, the score, the cinematography , set design and costume were just too good, laid the marker for future mobster flick to come...Peak cinematic feature if you will! and it has a score of 100% on one of the most ruthless critic panels ever, Metacritic, and That says alot!

When I saw Elvis and Tom Hanks nominated for Razzies 2023, I knew it was shït and pining for attention.

Funny how some movies has been nominated for the Razzies as well as Oscars.
Examples?

Joker
The Godfather III
lol It's a parody award but they have got some of the awards spot on over the years.
