None of the statements in this post relate to my post or even the topic being discussed. My question is 'what are the benefits or disadvantages of one tribe claiming a group of people like the Ikwerres' If they say they are Igbos ,what gain will that be or if they say they aren't Igbos, what are the disadvantages? Dedetwo: Awori people owned Eko until Yari.ba arrived. In the long run, I bet you Ndigbo will not suffer the consequences of idiocy displayed in southern Nigeria by certain airheads. Afizeres, Anabuta, Angas and Berom are small related tribes in Plateau State and they don't claim each other. Isoko and Urbobos are indistinguishable in my own views but they always claim to be different tribes. Efik, Ibibio and Annag look the same to me but one of my former employees from Akwa-Ibom said they are related but there is no universal name that combine them so every tribe decide to be on it's own. What are the advantages or disadvantages of these? LadyExcellency: Forget it, most of those mushroom groups are subsets of the major ethnic groups.
I was listening to Delta State News broadcast in local languages but to my surprise, five or six of those languages are plain dialetes of their parent Igbo Language.

When I was growing up in Lagos, we used to call anybody after Bini 'Omo Igbo' until I got to university and did NYSC that I started seeing these people telling me they aren't Igbos. One of them was my friend and classmate named P**l Omachi. One day, i made a remark about him as an Igbo guy and I was surprised when he said he is from Benue and not an Igboman as we all assume. In the North, they regard any southerner that's not Yoruba as Igbo , including Dr Goodluck Jonathan. Firespitter: I thought I was the only one that watched the video.
One of our yoruba coordinator during my NYSC days was shocked when one ikwerre girl boldly told him she isn't Igbo. The man no ask am where she come from oh. She was called to do a presentation, the next thing was " like me now I am ikwerre not Igbo" since that day I come to believe truly that the idea runs deep into them. I pity Igbo people that regard ikwerre as Igbo. |

Excuse me sir, What exactly is the benefy of claiming a tribe? For instance what are the merits and demerits of Ikwerres accepting to be Igbo or be different ethnic group? I know so many ethnic groups in Nigeria (some are even less than 30,000 people) and they are existing without this kind of claim and/denials. Bkayyy: That was how they worked on ohaneze ndi nzuzu around 2011 or 12 that they (ikwerre) and delta igbo are being left behind in igbo affairs that it is unbrotherly, that they are leaving them at the mercy of ijaw and urhobo and sentiment got to those old ignoramuses that they promised delta igbo Delta state governorship and undiluted support for riverine igbos. Tinubu is the most talked about topic on Nairaland. Less than 2% of Non-Igbo Nigerians know that there's anything called Ikwerre. If you doubt, just ask any random person on the Streets of Sokoto, Gboko, Ilorin, Biu, Ijebu-Ode, Auchi, or Ado-Ekiti if he/she believes Ikwerres are Igbos. The first response you will get is 'What is Ikwerres?' 24SEVEN: I swear down, Ikwerre is the most talked about Topic on Nairaland. After Ikwerre is Tinubu.
Well, Ikwerre speak almost same language as Igbo. But Ikwerre isn't Igbo because Ikwerres want a separate identity, and they got it in 1970. |

You can silence these attributes in them with prayer, love, care and above all MONEY. So many kids on Nairaland.
Elections are NOT won either by bravery or cowardice but by political structures.
You need to be sponsored by strong political structures of a party that enjoy popularity among the electorates. If you can't inspire love and confidence of the party, it will be difficult to get their ticket.
The alternative is for Ambode or any other politician to test his/her popularity on another platform e.g PDP, Labour Party, APGA etc.
However, these other alternative parties don't have strong political structures in Lagos politics and have reduced chances of winning. |

The problems with most people on Nairaland is that they don't read widely and most have limited education which makes it very difficult to have intellectual discussions like we do on Reddit or Quora on this forum. This is worsen by the fact that most of these people like to force their opinions on everybody and wish everyone just accept such opinions unquestioned. Why are you shifting the goal posts? I have just told you that people have rights to bear, change or even adopt any name they like. I even cited examples from the US and from this country but you are now talking about moving to Kano and such funny stuff that are unrelated to the subject matter. Your assertions that Buhari and Atiku made these names great and popular are borne out of ignorance about the origins of these names. It's just like saying Peter Okoye of P-Square made the name 'Peter' great and popular. The President was named Muhammad (corrupted to Muhammadu in local Parlance) and he adopted the name Buhari from Muhammad Al-Bukhari, the 7th century Persian Islamic Theologian/Scholar who was a native of the city of Bokhara, now in Uzbekistan. He compiled the most authentic Hadiths called 'Sahih Bukhar' which is highly reverred next to the Glorious Quran among Muslims. Bukhari or the corrupted local version Buhari/Buari simply means 'a native of the city of Bokhara' The former Vice President was named Abubakar after Sultan Abubakar Atiku (the 3rd Sultan of Sokoto Caliphate) who himself was named after Abu Bakr As-Siddiq Ateekulah, the first Khalifa Russullah, companion and Father-in-law of Prophet Muhammad. In the core North, a male child named Abubakar may also adopt the appellation, Sodiq or Atiku (the corrupted local version of Ateekulah among the Fulanis). Gov Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State is one of such people who adopted the name 'Atiku'. A child named Ibrahim or Usman may adopt the appellation 'Sheu' if they are named after Sheu (sheiks) Ibrahim Niyas of Senegal or Usman Dan Fodio of Sokoto Caliphate e.g Ex -Gov Ibrahim Sheu Shema of Katsina State and Ex President Usman Sheu Shagari. nku5: Abeg Abeg Abeg Atiku and Buhari did not move to Kano and change name to Dantata. PhD is the beginning of academic career while Prof is the pinancle of academic career.
In Nigeria of today by NUC standard u must have a PhD for over 10 years ( usually 12 yrs) before you can be assessed for professorship. Of course u gather relevant teaching and research experience within that period with over 50 academic publications in high impact factor Journals. Scopus, Thompson Reuters, WOS etc, with good citation index as will be seen in Google scholar, research gate, scopus, Wos etc
Academic career progression in Nigeria
Professor Associate professor Senior lecturer Lecturer 1 Lecturer 2 Assistant Lecturer
PhD will only qualify u for as automatic lecturer 2, to move from one cadre to another u will spend a minimum of 3 yrs on teaching, research and community service.
U won't find a Nigerian professor in the last 15 yrs without PhD. U can't even become a senior lecturer without PhD. Without PhD ur academic career will end in lecturer 1 n u won't teach PG students. |
