Awolowo escaped May be you need to know that Awolowo didn't really partake in governance between 1960-1966 because he had been arrested since 1962 and imprisoned at Calabar prison shortly thereafter. He was Premier of Western Region before independence but wasn't part of the Gov't immediately after Independence and as such he wasn't part of the people penciled down to be eliminated by the Coupists |

nelszx: Do you know why MDCN cannot inspect pharmacy and medical labs? The answer is a simple yes dey have no such powers as interpreted by law. They do not have power to inspect clinics and hospital. But the law statutorily empowers PCN and MLSCN to inspect pharmaceutical and medical laboratories both in public (hospital inclusive) and private sector. Ordinarily do you think if law empowers MDCN to inspect (which ordinarily should be sth de should fight for) that u won't see dem inspecting? Ur answer is as good as mine. U think if MDCN can inspect u won't see dem inspecting Dr's in medical practice to fish out the quacks? The MDCN being an older regualatory body was introduced during the era of True Federalism in Nigeria (First Republic) where the federating units (which were then called Regions and now States) are the appropiate Gov't to make legislatons to monitor, inspect and set standards for the health facilities in their territories. PCN and MLSCN were introduced much later at an era Nigeria is operating Pseudo-Unitary system of Gov't. No single agency which is for only one Profession created by the FG Can sussessfully inspect, monitor or set standards for all the Medical Laboratories in Nigeria...Its not practicable and even impossible for many reasons. |

What many lab Scientists (especially the young over zealous ones) fail to understand is that apart from infectious diseases which can be attributed to one agent and this can be confirmed by a particular test, most Lab tests( E.g FBC, E,U & Cr, PT-PTTK,D-Dimers, ESR etc) are not specific for the diagnosis of a particular disease but when combined with Clinical history, physical signs and other non-Lab tests like imaging,Radiography, Physical tests like ECG,they can help to support or confirm a diagnosis.. Even in Infectious diseases, the mere presence of an infectious agent doesn't always confirm or imply one has the disease. Most chronic diseases like Hypertension,Schizophrenia, Ureteric Calculi, Spondylosis, congestive cardiac failure, Anorexia Nervosa, infertility etc are caused by interraction of many factors and as such, a particular Lab test can NOT confirm their diagnosis. |

Sctests: Go back to the link you posted and peruse it carefully, your asm-ascp website does not say it confers on you "Medical laboratory Scientist" competencies. Let me quote an excerpt from your source
"Those who pass the exam are certified as a Technologist in Microbiology (M) or Specialist in Microbiology (SM) by the ASCP and are issued a certificate with both organizations' names on it."-----http://www.asm.org/index.php/nrcm-cert
Did you notice they were careful not have added the word "Medical" in front of the "Technologist"? The medico-legal issues surrounding the practice can not be wished away in countries where they are serious about this practice. Do non-biomedcal scientists(BMS) in the UK work with patient's samples to achieve results aimed at diagnosis. Do you know that the title "BMS" is a protected title in the U.K?
Again on your website let's take a look at the functions of a Registered Microbiologist and Specialist Microbiologist. Is there any job description there with any semblance of working in a Medical laboratory for diagnostic purpose?
You guys have your fields, how many Medical lab Scientists are employed as Food microbiologists, industrial chemists, Environmental biologist and so on? Do we run the environmental testing laboratories too?. You need to stop seeing the Medical lab Scientist as an ordinary 'Operator' not eligible to differentiate between a hyperglycemic sample caused by DM and a contaminated sample.
Listen the physician's here will click likes and applaud you, but if have any sense of history you will understand that during the days of biologist/chemist in IMLT, almost every clueless physician will point to the lab and blame it when they butcher a patient.
The lab guys were the fall guys in those days. When a patient dies, it's the lab that delayed results. They prescribe the wrong antibiotics- "oh that numbskull in the lab didn't run the AST effectively".
Well those "lab guys" have taken responsibility, built capacity, and equipped themselves with enhanced knowledge, now regulate the laboratory with the full backing of the law. Why should that be a problem? Our national/state hospitals now have very few cases of misdiagnosis traceable to the laboratory. Nowadays, we no longer get frequent finger-pointings for giving bad results and endangering patients as it was in the 70's and 80's, Now we only get finger-pointing for asking to head the medical laboratories we developed-OUR PRIMARY CONSTITUENCIES in accordance with the law. It is a positive turn-around if you ask me.
Wide consultations were made before that ACT was passed as Law, people who thought the "kitchen"/labs should be thrown to the backyard and blamed it for all their malpractice misfortunes are the ones crying foul today. Our Medical laboratories are getting strengthened, the Medical Lab.Scientists will keep building capacities through enhanced knowledge and application of same and the patients can only be the greatest winner. If you are looking to get us back to that age where the "Lab guy" is the fall guy for everyone else and is expected to gladly accept that, then i'm sorry the Law disagrees with you.
In the 50s' and 60's we had medical assistants treating patients because we didn't have enough Physicians, today we have more than ?40,000 physicians. In the 70's we didn't have enough MLS/Biomedical Scientists. The biologists/chemists without basic knowledge in medical science were drafted in. These were all stop-gap complementary efforts. Today Nigeria has at least 8,000 Medical Laboratory Scientists. Why go back to the inglorious era?
I am new on this forum, been reading as a guest for months, attracted by lots of misinformation about the MLS profession and not a reincarnation of anyone. I will also like to meet fellow MLS on these forum. They seem to be very few on this website.
You are wrong sir! There is no where in the civilized World where, ONLY one class of professional called MLS are the only ones working in Medical Laboratories. Pls google Medical Laboratoties and click on the section on Professionals in Medical Labs where the Pathologist come first, followed by Clinical Biochemist, then Pathologist's Assistant before Medical Lab Scientists. The idea that ONLY MLS will be carring out all the Medical tests done in all parts of Nigeria for 170 million people is not realistic albeit impossible. The unnecessary interprofessional rivalry is more pronounced In Gov't teaching hospitals. In the Private sector, which control 80% of the Med Labs in Nigeria, it will be very difficult to make the Med Labs solely for Med Lab Scientists |

obi4eze: You are just beating about the bush and contradicting yourself.
A well trained professional MLS can carry out most if not all medical laboratory tests, especially those done in our hospitals.
By law, the MLSCN is the statutory body that regulates medical laboratory science profession.
A medical laboratory scientist who specialized in histopathology can diagnose a Hodgkins lymphoma case if a lymph node from a patient with the tumor is processed and stained for microscopic examination.
You call the medical labs workshops yet doctors depend much on them to make diagnosis. Who is deceiving who? If the doctors can make diagnosis on their own, why refer the patients to them for tests?
The problem with doctors is their ego and know-it-all attitude. Many of them feel that other professionals are irrelevant hence the problem in the health sector. 1) I think you are manifesting unnecessary 'Victim mentality'. So if someone say a place in an industry is a workshop,it is a derogatory remark and professionals should not depend on output from such a place? 2) The Medical Laboratory are like Workshops with MULTIPROFESSIONALS working there.Pls check Wikipedia on Google for Medical Laboratories and the Professionals working there where the Pathologists come first, followed by Clinical Biochemist and Pathologist Assistants even came before Medical Lab Scientists. 3) Pathologists make diagnosis of Hodgkin's Lyphoma or Neurofibromatosis, Bile Acid assay etc. MLS working in Histopathology help to prepare the slides (they don't read the Slides and give diagnosis). Ask the MLS who have been in the profession long before you 4) The unnecessary flexing of Muscles and anti-doctor posture only happen in Gov't Hospitals/Labs. The best Medical Laboratories in Nigeria like Lancets, Pathcare, Union Diagnostics are operated by Pathologists who are Medical doctors that specialize in Laboratory Medicine and the MLS and other Health workers there work harmoniously with them like a family without confrontation or insecurity |

People see your work, feel your contribution to the success story and appreciate your role, not that you have to shout for people to notice. Pharmacists in Nigeria hardly do all these functions you just mentioned. Most are employed as drug sales men by Indian/Chinese Pharmaceutical companies and the 'Lucky' ones employeed in Gov't Hospitals mainly dispense drugs and that's why their impact in hospital and patients' care is not well felt. If you think otherwise, let Pharmacists in Gov't hospitals (Alone without the motley crowd called JOHESU) Go on strike and see if their impact will be well felt (patients will simply have to buy their drugs from private Pharmacy shops directly infront, behind or beside the hospitals with much courtsey) Even when they are not on strike, many patients always patronize Pharmacies outside. |
