ode remo:That's exactly what I thought to myself! I think it's probably because people overestimate the popularity of the internet or even Nairaland amongst Nigerians! I doubt up to 500 people in a country of 140 million have seen this article! My concern is not exactly for Intercontinental Bank! My concern is the negativity in the mind of most people! Hence, I'm still asking this question that keeps bothering me about Nigerians? Why would anyone seek the downfall of a private company? Where did Nigerians get this pull-down-any-successful-thing mentality? Why are we so desirous of seeing the downfall of successful people, companies or organizations I am afraid of this mentality because I see it everyday. Every poor person is praying for the downfall of a successful person! Why? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? |
neogogo:I doubt you have any money! Asides, if you do, i doubt Intercontinental bank would need a dime of your money, as they've been thriving without it over the years! I went to a branch of Intercontinental bank today to deposit some cash. I thought I would see lines of panicky customers looking to withdraw their money! I saw the exact opposite. There was a line of depositors even in the bulk room section! Then it hit me, majority of Nigerians don't use the internet. Those that do don't even visit Nairaland or that Dayo Coker guy's blog. If at all anyone does, it would be job seekers, and hey . . . . , job seekers have little or no money in their bank accounts. So de-marketing over the internet is a huge waste of time. The newspapers where most Nigerians get their information from is already singing Intercontinental's praise! Today's Guardian has it that Intercontinental opened 25 new branches just recently and would be opening more soon! |
Whoever put this article on the front page of Nairaland lacks conscience! I still keep asking this question? Why would anybody in his right mind be aiming for the downfall of a private company! I do not get this pulldown mentality that Nigerians possess!! |
@revmallam You are right on point! And this is not the first in recent times that they would rob the world blind! Remember the Y2K thing! That was a huge hoax that nobody questioned. Every company, government and computer in world became Y2K compliant! Now imagine these figures: The size of the world economy in GDP purchasing power parity is $70 trillion for year ending 2008. The size of the world Derivatives market is somewhere in the region of 678 Trillion dollars! How can we have a Derivatives market 10 times the size of the actual world economy? Most of these Derivatives(Forward, Futures, Options and Swaps) are controlled in London and New York, even though the leveraged funds originate from around the world. These derivatives were the tools the US & the UK used to suck the world dry!!!! If you understand derivatives, you'll get the picture! |
1) you dont av to use words like that to people 2) i dont understand what you saying, Are you saying the message is from a junior staff in ICB using his bank's e.mail account to send message ? I am just trying to understand you
Yeah you are right, I shouldn't have used words like that! My apologies.I didn't mean it as an insult. Yes, that's what I mean. The employee (probably a junior staff) wasn't authorized by the bank (management), to send that email. He probably did it in his own capacity! To put things in proper perspective, take a cue from this example. Most universities abroad issue email addresses to all all their students. . . . .E.g james.deen@harvard.edu. Now if James Deen chooses to send a 419 email with his email address, does that make Harvard University liable for his offense?? I hope u get my point now! |
blacksta:I agree with you. His detractors feel threatened by his status! First the guy is the most influential Nigerian/Black person in Eastern and Western Europe, and actually he is way too powerful in Ukraine! Its only natural that many Ukrainian elite would express their racial sentiment towards him by seeking to bring him down! |
First, the article has no source! Please provide your source so we can ascertain if you didn't doctor the article! Secondly, whats wrong with someone asking people to invest in something legitimate? Really, how is that a problem. From all indication, at least in your article, it appears like the Kings Capital was a legitimate real estate investment concern. Asides, who hasn't lost money to the Global recession/Credit crunch/ Sub Prime crisis? Every investment fund has lost money, so why is this a special case? I know! Its just another expression of our Pull down mentality! We always have an innate need to pull down the most successful amongst the pack, whether its a Pastor, a Banker, a Musician, an Actor, whoever is a shining success must be pulled down! |
alex406:Any person even with the smallest brain would know that the message is from angry junior staff and not from the bank itself! |
asweetcake:In the same way, Nigeria cannot get better with the kinds of followers we have! We really do need to change our thinking! |
asweetcake:The message is obviously not from the bank! |
Read the story about south Korea I was able to pick one line there "Korea’s communications law, which bans the spreading of false information online, he could face seven years in jail". Do we have that Law also in Nigeria?
We might not have that specific law in Nigeria, but we do have laws against libelous writing. And that would suffice, as the blogger's article is obviously a write-up aimed at tarnishing the image of an entity! That is libel! As regards the letter from the intercontinental bank staff, it is a no case! The blogger cannot put the responsibility on intercontinental bank. All unauthorized mails sent by employees with personal company email always come with a disclaimer. Here is an example of such disclaimer from zenith bank: The information contained in this e-mail message and any attachment is for designated recipient(s) ONLY and may contain privileged, proprietary, or private information. If you have received it in error, please delete the message and notify the sender immediately. Zenith Bank accepts no liability whatsoever for any loss whether it be direct, indirect or consequential, arising from information made available and actions resulting there from. |
It sure is! I heard recently that south easterners own 73 per cent of allocated land in Abuja! That alone is enough to put fear in the Nigerian polity run by a certain cabal up north! |
The bank should sue the blogger for libelous writing! He would be sentenced to jail! Any advanced country knows the implications of this kind of criminal act by the blogger! Read what happened in South Korea on a fairly similar case: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/092a99ca-ddab-11dd-87dc-000077b07658.html I have a simple question? Intercontinental bank is a private company directly employing over 4000 nigerians. It is not a government agency. Why would anyone in his right mind wish for the bank or any other private company to collapse?. I do not understand this pull down mentality amongst Nigerians. It is sickening!Very disgusting! If a man is successful, every poor man will be praying for his downfall! I really don't get this Nigerian mentality! |
ode remo:@ode remo No disrespect, but a name speaks a lot about a person (at least your comments prove so) You claim 2 have gotten your CIB in 98' and you're opening ya mouth 2 say let all or any bank fail! You lack understanding of basic economic issues. If a big bank like intercontinental fails because of false rumors, the whole Nigerian economy will fall and your will be the first to go Hungry! Change your name oh, it might help erase negativity from your reasoning! Incase you don't know, in an advanced country, the blogger would be standing trail and would probably end up in jail! |
Redman44:This is the right kind of thinking. If just a tenth of Nigerians thought like you and believes in what you wrote here, Nigeria would have long come out of its mess! Keep up whateva u are doing bro! |
I think if anyone knows the implication of trying to bring down a bank with stupid rumours like this one, they would desist from this nonsense! The strength of a bank is based on perception. If a bank is very healthy, and a rumour like this one spreads successfully, depositors would withdraw their monies and the hitherto healthy bank would be in danger! Under normal circumstances, even in the USA the blogger who spread this kind of rumor would be arrested! |
df2006:Sorry,if I understand u correctly,I would ask if u are a smart person!(No disrespect intended) What is the difference btw a Student and a School? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . btw an American and America? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . btw a Nairalander and Nairaland? And finally, please tell me the differnce btw a Website and the Internet? , |
Olayinkaoj:Did u notice how all the points you mentioned as OBJ's negatives are all political issues?? Crisis in Ekiti, Oyo and states in the east? That's political!! Political issues as the ones you've mentioned have little or no bearing on the common man's pocket!Lets talk economics! You wouldn't care for politics if we had all our economics right! On economics, OBJ did an outstanding job! I don't want to start mentioning the good economic points he scored! The tremendous growth in the stock market (Since OBJ left, the Nigerian stock market has crashed from been the best performing WORLDWIDE in 2007, to becoming the worst performing worldwide as of January 2009) Read these 2007 best: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Markets/articleshow/2702651.cms 2009 worst: http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/27618/41/ Exchange rate stabilization The exchange rates remained relatively stable throughout the tenure of OBJ hovering around 120-130 naira to the dollar. Compare that to the errant stumbling the Naira has suffered of recent. The USD is now changing for 200 naira! Cancellation of our entire foreign debts- Thirty years of debt slavery wiped out by OBJ! This to me is one of the best things that happened to Nigeria in recent times! I remeber when we used to count Nigeria's huge foreign debt! We now can't our huge foreign reserves! The debt is now on the comeback with this YarAdua's government! Tremendous growth in Telecommunication sector. From 400,000 connected lines in 1999 to over 40 million in 2007! Now thats's tremendous. Banking ConSOLUDOtion! This is one outstanding feat that top class business schools worldwide are going to put in their text books/curricula We now have 5 banks amongst the top 500 largest worldwide. Now large enough to fund mega sized infrastructural projects! Pension Funds, EFCC, Port Reforms, upgrading of the teaching hospitals, gentrification of Abuja, massive investments in the Oil and Gas sector, resuscitation of our steel plants and a whole lot other extraordinarily marvelous economic stunts OBJ pulled. Please people, if u know any other Nigerian president who has performed anything close, please mention his name so we can pelt him our own eggs and tomatoes! Does this mean that OBJ was excellent? No, I don't think so! There's a lot other areas he could have worked on like Security, Roads, Refineries, etc. That notwithstanding, OBJ is the greatest Nigerian leader and those in the know -{ intelligent folks that understand the theory of development} - surely do appreciate his tenure! |
cliveland:Looks like u were born recently. . . probably in the late 90's! We lost the industrial sector during OBJ'S time ? Are u kidding me? We lost the industrial sector long ago in the 80's and 90's during Babangida's SAP program! It started picking up in trickles during OBJ's tenure! Unilever, if at all, is leaving under Yar'Adua's tenure , so leave OBJ out of that. One thing I realised is that hard working people benefited under OBJ while lazy ass Nigerians sat complaining! I know way too many people that prospered during OBJ'S tenure! |
obinna5000:Thanks 4 the enlightenment! I never knew that! Thanks man! |
Am Alone:You are bored right? |
You guys are finding it hard 2 believe ![]() Ok, maybe it's different in Lagos! But I'm using this Multilinks Blue Broadband in the Niger Delta and I'm sure we are very few on the network, hence the speed. I watch TV online live like I'm overseas!! I thought that should be convincing enough! Its expensive though. 21k per month. @hayprof, give me the good internet download manager.I'm waiting. obinna5000:I am seeing that calculation for the first time. How does 1550kbs equate 193KBs. Is there Any other person using this Blue Broadband or any other network experiencing these speeds? If none other, then I might just conclude that I have the fastest internet connection in Nigeria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!! |
lynxnoon:Well pinpoint a good download manager, and i'll do the screenshots. To put things in perspective, I watch CNN live on my laptop like its on TV. |
Papa browne the idea is that if he didn't hate the independent press so much, no one would've banged up the journalist. And it was fyneguy that even brought him into this, by declaring that we cannot fathom his ministry. so pls comment in d contxt of ALL that has been said.
Who doesn't hate the independent press? Every successful person does!! I don't think the Pastor's dislike for the independent press beats that of Bill Clinton's. Everybody that has any measure of extraordinary success is a target of their pull-down mentality. Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey,Sarah Palin and everybody that is somebody is always a target. That aside, the journalist is from a soft sell magazine like PM and we all know their paparazzi antics. Remember how they(Soft sells) killed Diana, trying to take her pictures?I am not a fan of that kind of journalism. In the context of all that has been said, I don't think it will do the church any harm to apologize for any failings of their security personnel. Also, I think Fyneguy doesn't know jack about what he's is saying, as his disposition does more damage than the criticisms of the other posters. |
I don't believe the Journalist story for one simple reason! He went to the Pastor's father's burial. He obviously had preconcieved intentions. I think the Church's soldiers beat him up, i doubt any top church officials were present to appove the beatings. However, there is no justification for any violence towards someone that is just taking pictures. The Church should at least apologize if they aren't denying the story. On Pastor Chris, I wonder why his name is mentioned here when he was not involved in any way. Our mentality of seeking 2 bring down successful people is sickening. |
Without question, Adenuga should be the richest. He has his fingers sooo deep in the three most lucrative sectors of the economy- Oil & Gas(upstream), Telecoms and Banking! That's deep! Dangote on the other hand is basically a trader.(no disrespect intended) The reason Adenuga is not on Forbes is simple- no PLCs. Forbes basically makes assessments based on quantifiable wealth and for Nigeria they make do strictly with stock values. Otedola is on the list this year because of his shares in AP. Zenon was probably barely taken into consideration! |
tolaakins:@Tolaakins, This is the screen shot you asked 4!! https://www.speedtest.net/result/429807248.png For 9ja, 1.5mb/s download speed ain't bad at all!! I'm luving this.I pray they don't mess it up. At this speed, you can download 100mb in 1 minute!!!!!!!!! (I wish) |
Off the hook!!!!!!!!! The multilinks Blue Broadband service is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet! I think I have the fastest internet connection in Nigeria!! Its expensive though!! |
And so If bank CEO's don't buy private jets, then who were they made for?As long as they didn't purchase them via corrupt means, there's nothing wrong! Nigerians just love sensational stories! As if banks are government entities! |
I think building a system based on what I would term Communocracy would suffice for Nigeria and Africa in general. I would assume Communocracy as system where power as a tool for development is centered around communities-not neccesarily geographical, but entities with common goals and aspirations. Whether it would be easy or not to achieve, i don't know, but I do think it would be more suitable, mainly because community governance has and continues to be be part our(Nigerians) collective tendencies. Bottomline is more power should be centered around communities which naturally are intent on accelerating their own development. Western democracy isn't working for two reasons: 1)Nigerians and Africans in general are culturally disposed to act independent of constituted authority- especially one which is so far away from their backyards. Sadly, the opposite is a major criteria for the success of western democracy. 2) It's hardly ever been part of our psyche to work together for a much larger entity called a nation or country. Its either we work for our small family community out of love or we serve the brutal king out of fear. I do think we can focus on our strengths and develop a system of governance around that loving community spirit we possess, call it Communocracy and ditch this imported garb called western democracy. Its probably alien to our genetics. @Nnenna On a more serious note, I think your intellectual capacity and reasoning are way above the average Nairaland, hence the lack of accurate responses to your questions. The decentralized democratic system you propose would be most ideal as that would taper down any need for major tribal manipulations. A good example theoretically would be the UK where you have England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all functioning independently, albeit under one creed. |
![]() And this Jimoh guy wants to be Governor of a state!!!!!!! He'll not only ruin his state, He'll ruin Nigeria with this his suggestion. The first rule to understanding money is this: Money is not real. It is just piece of paper. What makes it important is the simple fact that we have all agreed to store value in that piece of paper. So in essence, Money is a $tore of Value. Nothing More. If Soludo wakes up one day and decides that he has just found the solution to our economic crisis; Print money and share 5 million naira to each family. We will all end up using the 5 million naira to buy pure water! |
