She could have found a way to avoid that announcement. Someone else could have done it.Maybe Segun Adeniyi!

Madame Dora, last we checked Adebayo dropped her resignation letter, in person, in Abuja. You could have questioned her then, rather than asking for explanation on the pages of the news print. Not everyone is interested in playing to the gallery.[/quote]Yeah Kobo is soooooo out of touch with the Nigerian reality!! And I understand completely! I was once like that!

On Madame Dora, what ever questions she (FG) needed to ask Mrs Adebayo in the press release, she could have asked her when she visited with the SSS.
Its all a spoof. And Dora is finding herself in very unfamiliar turf with very strange bedfellows. She might be the next to resign!!

There is nothing 'typical' about it. When people are dying NOW of Malaria, why should be be jumping through hoops about swine flu given the reasons I elucidated above, we are highly unlikely to have a break out?  huh

Your alarmist tone serves no purpose - I'm glad your government 'foresaw' and you are 'fully covered', Nigerians have little worry about when it comes to swine flu, that is my opinion.
Debosky, I am not the one who is been alarmist. Every major news network has it fully covered throughout the day. They are the ones sounding the alarm.
The simple reason to "jump the hoops over swine flu" is so that it doesn't add more deaths to those Nigerians already dying of Malaria.

I really do hope that given the reasons you elucidated above, Nigeria is not at risk. The problem however is that over 12,000 Nigerians travel daily many of them to the southern part of USA.
Once again, I am not concerned for myself, as my government has me fully covered.

I'm not very concerned. It seems to be associated with people who have been in Mexico for the most part, and to a lesser extent the southern US. I don't think we get much travelers to/from Mexico in Nigeria so there's really nothing much to be done for now.

Those of you who like pork, I'd advise you to abstain for a while.

Like someone rightly said, Malaria is a bigger concern for us than swine flu.
I am not very concerned for myself either. My government long foresaw all these coming and has me fully covered!
My concern is for Nigerians/ Africans. My other concern is for the global economy man. Just when the economy was recovering, this one hits!

Malaria is a bigger concern? That's typical Nigerian mentality! Nothing becomes important until it hits.

Nigeria should do something to prevent it from reaching its shores now, especially as the country doesn't have the resources and infrastructure to contain the eventuality of a pandemic.

Foreign AffairsA New Emerging Threat : The Mexican Flu Virus! by PapaBrowne(op): 3:54pm On Apr 26, 2009
Just about the time the world is trying to recover from the global economic downturn, a brand new threat, much worse than the global recession, is emerging!
The Swine Flu Virus is on rampage in Mexico and seems to have potential to spread pretty rapid. Cases have been reported in US, New Zealand and a few other countries are watching some patients closely. 81 people have died already.

This seems like a pretty bad virus as it has strains of Human, Swine and Bird Flu Virus all jam packed in one Virus. International Health bodies like World Health Organization, US Center for Disease Control and a host of others are worried scared of its potential for spread.

My question is this: Why is it that just about the time when the world is recovering from the economic downturn, the Virus appears from no where. This is some scary stuff man!
I don't know if governments worldwide are ready for this triple threat of global terrorism, global economic recession,  and a potential global pandemic like the Swine flu virus.

I don't even want to think of Nigeria/Africa's ability to handle such a pandemic. This is really some scary shit!

(CNN) -- Mexican officials are asking citizens to avoid large crowds, refrain from kissing as a greeting and maintain a distance of at least 1.8 meters (six feet) from each other amid growing concern in the country and elsewhere over new cases of suspected and confirmed swine flu infection.

By Sunday, 81 deaths had been deemed "likely linked" to a deadly new strain of the virus by health authorities in Mexico. Viral testing has confirmed 20 cases, said Dr. Jose A. Cordova Villalobos, Mexico's health secretary. In the United States, the number of confirmed swine flu cases stood at 11.

In New Zealand, officials said 22 students and three teachers, who returned from a three-week-long language trip to Mexico, may have been infected with the virus.

The 25 students and teachers at Auckland's Rangitoto College returned to New Zealand via Los Angeles on Saturday.

Fourteen have shown flu-like symptoms, with four "more unwell than others," said Dr. Julia Peters, clinical director of Auckland Regional Public Health Service.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said 10 students tested positive for influenza A. The specimens will be sent to WHO to determine whether it is H1N1 swine influenza. H1N1 influenza is a subset of influenza A.

The WHO results are expected back by midweek. The group remains quarantined at home.

"It's certainly has not been confirmed that they have swine flu," said Dr. Craig Thornley, medical officer of health in influenza. "We already have provisional information that some of the group have influenza A. We won't know if they have the type of influenza A that is swine flu."

In England, authorities stressed that a crew member who developed flu-like symptoms during a flight from Mexico City to Heathrow did not test positive for swine flu.

"I can confirm that the patient doesn't have swine flu," said Jonathan Street, a spokesman for Northwick Park Hospital in London.

"We have done all test, and they all came back negative."

In Israel, doctors are running tests on a man who recently returned from Mexico with light flu symptoms.

U.S. health officials said Friday that some cases of the virus in the United States matched samples of the deadly Mexican virus. All the patients have recovered or are expected to.

The panic over the virus prompted Canada to issue a travel health notice, saying the public health agency was "tracking clusters of severe respiratory illness with deaths in Mexico."  Watch CBC report on Canadian microbiologists' concerns »

South Korea said it will test airline passengers arriving from the United States. And Japan will convene a Cabinet meeting Monday to come up with measures to block the entry of the virus into the country.

The United States had not issued any travel warnings or quarantines.

But US Airways said Saturday night it would allow passengers to change plans if they wanted to because of the outbreak.

Gregory Hartl, of the World Health Organization, said the strain of the virus seen in Mexico is worrisome because it has mutated from older strains. Watch how public health officials grade phases of pandemic alerts »

"Any time that there is a virus which changes ,  it means perhaps the immunities the human body has built up to dealing with influenza might not be adjusted well enough to dealing with this new virus," Hartl said.

He said that, in Mexico, otherwise young, healthy people have been hit by the virus -- "one of the pieces of the puzzle that is worrying us," he said.

Mexico City has closed all of its schools and universities until further notice because of the virus.  Watch efforts in Mexico to prevent spread of the virus »

More than 1,300 people with flu-like symptoms have been admitted to hospitals in Mexico, and officials are trying to determine how many of them have swine flu, said Jose Cordova Villalobos, the country's health minister.

The H1N1 strain of swine flu is usually associated with pigs. When the flu spreads person-to-person, instead of from animals to humans, it can continue to mutate, making it a tougher strain that is harder to treat or fight off.

Symptoms of swine flu include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, the CDC said. Learn more about swine flu and how to treat it »

The posters presentation is fraught with problems no doubt. But I don't think it has anything to do with divide and rule!
There is nothing wrong with discussing positively what I think we know is a major problem with Nigeria.

These poverty figures are worthy of discussion!
North-west:74%, North Central%: 70, North East: 70%
South West:28%, South South: 30%, South East: 23%

The disparity in poverty level is too high and it would help to discuss the cause of this. And I don't think the answer is too far from the what the poster has stated.

Northern Nigeria! Southerners & Easterners!! Western World!!!
All of these, directions and descriptions!!

Then again, although incoherent & biased in presenting his/her case, the poster has made points that are statements of fact and worthy of discussion especially if Nigeria must move forward.

We can pretend as if the stereotypical characterizations of Northern Nigeria mentioned by  the poster don't exist and try as much as possible to act politically correct, but fact is these stereotypes are real and  are detrimental to the growth of this country.
However, every region in the country has its detrimental characteristics that hinder the growth and development of this country.

We are critcising the poster for starting a tribal discussion- Tribalism is a fact in Nigeria! We must discuss it! Not discussing tribal stereotypes is akin to sweeping dirt under the carpet in your house. One day, you'll find that your house is a dustbin.

Stereotyping is the basis for which most, if not all of us Humans base our judgments!
Stereotypically, Igbos would be too money driven and would do anything for it! Stereotypically, Yorubas would be traitors. Stereotypically, Hausas are too destitute-like(as the poster has pointed), Calabars too House-Helpy, Delta youths too militant, Edo girls too lose in Italy and so on and so fault!

In discussions, there is nothing too wrong with stereotyping. It is in individual actions that stereotyping becomes a problem.
I don't see anything wrong with the poster starting a reasonable stereotype- based discussion on something many of us know is one of the largest problems in the country!

There's nothing like a fair hearing in political cases in Nigeria, so why should he come back and face the compromised courts for charges that are politically motivated. The guy stepped on too many toes in his bid to sanitize Abuja.

The point I was making, that you failed to grasp, is that the increased 'size' is a direct consequence of the capitalization requirement.  Now if you feel the size of a company is all there is to it, then I advise you start taking basic lessons in economics (or petty trading).
I grasp that the increased 'size' is a direct consequence of the capitalization requirement and that's exactly my point. Because the capitalization requirement is a direct consequence of Soludo's policy formulation.

I don't think the size of the company is all there is to it, but I'm pretty sure it matters much more than yearly profitability.
Before a company gets to a size where Forbes would reckon, then it sure has had profitable runs in the past and should have much more to come as in the case of the three Nigerian banks mentioned.

Some posters just don't get it.
The list is of top 2000 world biggest companies, and says nothing about their profitability. The increased capitalization influenced this, but says nothing of their performance.
Yet Soludo, as CBN governor, only made the regulation, he did not source the funds, neither did he manage the banks, ergo the  whole OP is pointless
Nobody uses profitability to determine the size of a company! If profitability is used as a benchmark, then it would be safe to assume that the Suya Mallam near your house who turned a profit should make the list b4 the likes of GM, Chrysler & all the other giants that posted  huge loses.

I repeat the same question Omo Ibo has asked.
Before Soludo, where were those banks? ? ?

Incase you don't know, let me tell you.

Before Soludo, all the 89 banks in Nigeria put together were smaller than the fourth largest bank (I think Ned bank) in South Africa.
Now, with just 4 years of Soludo, any our top four banks can compete favorably with the same Ned bank.
Without Soludo, none of these would be possible, even if Alan Greenspan were to be employed as CEO of one of our pre-2005 banks!

That's called outstanding performance. And I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that Soludo is Ibo!

What if the president goes?
Apr 8th 2009 | LAGOS
From The Economist print edition

Umaru Yar’Adua’s ill-health is fuelling dangerous speculation

A political upset would shake the relative stability Nigeria has enjoyed since the end of military rule in 1999. The economy has grown steadily. Though severe problems remain, Nigeria’s poorest are better off and less bullied than they were under the generals. But if Mr Yar’Adua’s health worsens, it could threaten the northerners’ grip on power and on the lucrative apparatus of government.

Political power in Nigeria is still allotted in back-room deals to ensure that the top job alternates between the elites of the largely Muslim north and Christian south: a “gentlemen’s agreement” to allow the ungentlemanly feasting on the country’s billions of dollars of stolen and mismanaged oil resources. Nigeria is still one of the world’s most corrupt countries.
I like the highlighted part of the article. The reporter decribed it perfectly!
