There is a saying that you can manage a bad spouse, but you can hardly ever manage bad in-laws. Couples fight all the time and makeup, but once it involves either in-laws, it becomes harder to fix as multiple egos are crushed and loyalty would be tested.

Hopefully you have a partner who understands peaceful co-parenting, which is most times not the case.

Well staying together for the kids for the sake of their ‘stability’ sounds reasonable on paper, assuming the parents are able to show a ‘civil’ front for them but I dunno how practical this is in a genuinely toxic environment. Kids are more observant than people give them credit for so it may actually be healthier to split in some cases
