PoliticsRe: Manslaughter Case: Ibinabo Sent To Kirikiri by Pataki: 9:58pm On Mar 31, 2009
A lot of people chat rubbish based on perceptions imbued by biased tabloid reporting. Yes, Ibinabo is no saint. She has always been a glamorous woman and lived that kind of lifestyle, however some of the rubbish in the media (such as Ibinabo showing no remorse for her actions) is wide of the mark. I do not know Ibinabo personally but I have known of her since I was a kid. I grew up with her cousins and her uncle was my dad's best friend from school days up until his untimely death from cancer. Her cousin is the only person who produces a monthly magazine for the people of Okrika. . . . . . . If you contrast some of the despicable media reporting with Ibinabo's actions, you will find that their depiction of her character is completely fallacious. . . . . . My people, the Okinans (Okrikas) have been engaged in a civil war since the death of the last Amanyanabo in 1998. The war is between the Tuboniju and Coniju people over the right of ascenscion to the throne, plus some political savagery between PDP and ANPP (plus militancy). My whole village was burnt down as a result of this war, and scores, hundreds even, of people killed. Ibinabo was living in London jejely and decided to go back to Nigeria to host a yearly peace festival between both warring factions. Come and see rivals coming together in the name of peace, no small thanks to Ibinabo. I have pictures of the festival (including pictures of another yearly party she throws for Okrika children in Kirike). I would upload them if I can find a scanner. . . . . This kind of action is totally at odds with her media persona. I only add this anecdote to draw a contrast with the virulent and hateful media depiction of Ibinabo. . . . . That aside, one should look at the court case on it's merits, not from a morally judgemental standpoint. It is a case of manslaughter by driving, not DUI (at least not in court). Manslaughter by reckless driving should carry a sentence of 18 months max. Full stop. The case will be appealed again and Ibinabo will get justice.
Justice? What justice?

She committed manslaughter, fled from the scene of accident, refused to show-up in court, paid N100K thinking she do be go free, and you are typing: ''. . . . . Ibinabo will get justice.''

I wish you luck in your pursuit of justice.

Justice is not based on how you FEEL. If that should be the case then the poor widow that lost her last N100 to a pick pocket may feel like putting him away for life because of N100. Should the court pass the judgment based on how she feels?
What a senseless analogy and comparison. Pilfering money is now equal to manslaughter and show of arrogance exemplified by Ibinabo?

The issue of drunk driving does not apply here cos it was not proven she was drunk when she killed the doctor.[/quote]Therefore, we might as well conclude, she (Ibinabo) was not even the one driving the car at that said in time of the accident right? Since no CCTV, no finger prints were taken from the scene of the accident by the police to indicate such?

iReport:
Of course the judgment was ridiculous because i believe he should have stayed more in jail so as to enable him think twice before drinking and driving but Ibinabo's case is quite unusual because there was no evidence that she was drunk and even if she was, 5 years for manslaughter is a little bit harsh. I initially endorsed that judgment until i read the full transcript of her case, that changed my mind.
Must there be an evidence of drunk driving in times past before the full weight of the law is applied? Or how do you people reason at times? She was stated to be drunk and engaged in reckless driving. For that, she got the weight measure of the law. If you start running case scenarios with and from America, just because you are looking for a point to prove, you smack of low intelligence. tongue

If Ibinabo bagging a five year sentence for manslaughter sounds ridiculous to you, how does the case above sound to you? undecided

Of course, I am subject to think you do support her inglorious actions of drinking and driving recklessly since she is a woman and had the opportunity of taking a man's life off the planet earth. and if you have cared to follow my many comments on here,i neither care one way or another what you do, or how you feel as im not on here to make friends and dont care if you go red in the face, green or whatever, all i have done is to make an objective and non biased comments based on the issues on both sides of the divide as i have seen it
Very hilarious. It is for the sake of sanity and high respect to your posting in times pasts, that now makes me question, whether you are truly rational and objective on this topic. I am still at loss whether, you just choose to sit at the other side of the divide and postulate assumptions and theories, which do not in anyway, embrace the foundation of this article/report. By the way, I am not in any way importuning for your friendship. So please do not get it twisted.

lucabrasi:
1.if you think 98% of nigerian children not getting fostered or adopted gives you some perverse joy then go for it.
Where in my postings have you deduced this and you can conclusively write such a comment to be directed at me? If your sympathy for adopted kids is blocking your rationale to articulately and objectively weigh this matter, please note, you are not fit for this subject of discourse.

Did you in all sincerity read the article before coming up to make a comment at all? Myself, for the purpose of emphasis and clarity showed you where, the woman was keeping teenage boy and girls from the article and using them to rear up babies, which she thereafter sells to potential clients, you in your haste to post your verbiage skipped that, and you come to state that the only missing thing was her not legalizing her organization.

Does that make any sense to you?

lucabrasi:
2.if you think faced with a choice of either leaving a new born baby on refuse heaps like these girls will most probably have done, and the baby getting killed as a result of exposure to cold, dirt or worse soldier ants crawling through their noses, mouths and killing them is better then go for it.
Please there are orphanages all across the length and breadth of Nigeria. What this woman was doing is no where near an orphanage, rather making teenagers to procreate and she goes off to sell them to her clients. Spare yourself this infantile glory of posting verbiages without having recourse to read articles properly, digest it and analyze before hitting the reply button.

lucabrasi:
3.or if you think, its better for the children to grow up on the streets joining the millions of area boys, training to become potential criminals, armed robbers and hired killers is a better alternative, then i guess you are the wise one after all and im completely and utterly ignorant for suggesting that people who need babaies and willing to take care of them in a country with zero welfare is a better alternative
Rubbish! There are people born with silver spoons in Nigeria who are street criminals, hired killers and armed robbers. Most times as one is made to perceive, it is not only about living on the street. Children have been on the street, who made a total success of themselves. So please spare me this emotional and over-used sentiments that she was taking off potential and future area boys by the despicable act she was rendering.

lucabrasi:
its obvious you neither know the situation teenage mothers face in nigeria, neither do you know what new born babies in this situation are going through, while i wont go down the insults road with you,ill suggest you do an indepht research like i have done in the past, then yu will realise that the woman is providing a service, albeit going about it the wrong and an illegal way.
Well, on the contrary, you know ZILCH of teenage mothers. I have worked with teenagers while in Nigeria. I have experience of volunteering my time and service to orphanages. And in no way, was what that woman doing anything good! What is bad is bad! Stop adding water into your air-basket of argument. It does not make any iota of sense.

@ lucabrasi,

Since reading your rejoinder to me yesterday, I have kept away from this thread. Not because you made any form of credible response deserving my silence, but your penchant to justify your point reeks of deep seated ignorance, which I truly find nauseating and annoying.

If I were to respond to your hogwash, it would be with 100% anger, and in my perspective, that carries no weight to actually convincing you that you are very much still in the WRONG. If you think legalizing what that woman does makes it totally right in your view, I can say: I am utterly disgusted to know that you are educated in a developed world.

As that old aviator's saying goes, takeoffs are optional but landings are mandatory.

If you have successfully taken off from Murtala Airport with the rough draft of your Nairaland post, by writing your thoughts down as you climb out and transition into cruise mode, then you must PRECISELY configure your aircraft for that final approach and landing phase at the correct airspeed, with your gear locked down, flaps extended per schedule, and all relevant prayer checklists observed using the spell checker, while proof-reading multiple times, BEFORE you finally touch down " on the numbers" by actuating the "reply" button, if you do not wish to bounce down the runway eratically or crash in flames, to the great amusement of the gathered onlookers and photographers.

Say NO to the modify button.

PoliticsRe: Haliburton Bribe Takers List by Pataki: 8:10pm On Mar 29, 2009
Our so-called leaders are nothing but common bribe takers, according to US investigators who have got to the bottom of the Halliburton scandal.

The fingered personalities include three former presidents;Obasanjo, Abacha, and Abubakar- as well as a who's who of Nigeria's political and business elite.

At least three of our former presidents, Sani Abacha, Abdusalami Abubakar, and Olusegun Obasanjo, received millions of dollars in bribes from American and European contractors retained to build Africa's first liquefied natural gas plant in Bonny, Rivers State, according to US law enforcement officials.

Also enmeshed in the vast and formalized bribery scheme is a long line of ministers, bureaucrats, top politicians, state and local officials and former oil minister Dan Etete, according to American investigators.

This cast of characters, charged with running the affairs of 150 million people in the heart of Africa, received stacks of US dollar bills in briefcases and sometimes in bullion vans.

In other cases they received their payoffs via electronic bank transfers involving such financial institutions as Citibank.

In all, these eminent Nigerians accepted at least N27 billion in bribes from the oil services companies in exchange for billions of dollars in contracts to build our liquefied natural gas plant, US investigators say.
Unfortunately, we live in a lawless and corruption embedded society. And these marauders are allowed to keep enjoying the privileges placed on them as former Head of State to Nigeria, while they stole this country DRY!

This is so depressing. sad sad sad
