[quote author=PoliteActivist post=118571295]Wow. You sound like part of the 1% - not your average guy. So your case is quite different. Your dreams are not weird at all, they are BIG - as they ought be. And since your heart is in the right place they are sure to come to fruition. Kudos on all you've done so far. Keep up the good work!
(Folks, sorry for mentioning you all here - it's an experiment of sorts. People who can speak Igbo, please help us translate the video below. What you folks think of it? What you think of this thread or trend generally? Also what's your biggest accomplishment or dream about going abroad? Conversely, if you are in Naija, do you sometimes regret not going? What's the one aspect of Naija that'll finally make you japa, no matter the cost? Floor is yours, feel free to vent. Remember, no one here knows who you are!)
HarlequinLekex: These fish sellers just dey rip naijans because of dollar don increase, how dollar take affect their businesses. They don't even export sef. Tufiakwa. Nigeria or naija which way?
TheOgaBoss: are u aware the bulk of the fish we consume in this country are imported?
But when dollar decrease they no go decrease the price!
NwaliE01: Beloved. Everything i acquire in the foreign land is for our father's land. I would like to come back when am lead to do so and i would like to come when am prepared. Money is secondary.
Wow. Very good answer. I personally don't see the rush - as long as you don't forget where you are from. "Everything i acquire in the foreign land is for our father's land" - how do you actualize this in practical terms? It'd seem quite hard to do
kunle75: I live within my means in my own house, and comfortable too.
The statistics is almost true but doesn't reflect for everyone living here, cos majority tried to live above their means thereby causing them unnecessary hardship. I can give you numerous examples of how you can go about it and get same if not better results than me. I know some of my neighbors who are artisans of Mexicans/Asian descent that are very very comfortable and living under the radar. It depends, I can go on and on.
Kudos my brother. It can't be easy to do or most Americans will be doing it. I mean, who enjoys being in debt or bankruptcy??!!
seanwilliam: You’re right on this though. It’s common among Nigerian youth especially. But I personally practice delay gratification, maybe because I suffer too much before I started making money, I can’t afford to lose it .
Any day any time, I’ll choose 32m over traveling abroad . Within a year I can easily x5 that amount and I will be able to travel anywhere
You right, delayed gratification is the key. But it is very hard to practice in this country, with all the societal pressures and expectations. Do you mind sharing your format a bit, maybe some of us will learn something
Crenzywilliams: I guess it’s fair to say am still paying the prize for my relocation. School was tough, the cultural shock was overwhelming. That said, i have to admit, it’s way better than I was in Nigeria, it’s easy to plan here, and if you work hard, you can make lots of money, thank God am hard working. Honestly, it’s not been easy, but its been really good; and I swear, it’s worth cost I paid, and it’s always getting better.
Sorry o my brother, I took a peek at your profile. You posted this below April 2020, and you arrived in UK 2019??
Its not easy though. But I set some rules for myself and stood within those.
Anyone can do it.
It can't be easy at all my brother. Infact you must be living well below your mates. Because even very wealthy America, most live paycheck to paycheck. See below
seanwilliam: please talk for yourself . 32m will be generating nothing less down 350k for me daily in trading . All I need is good internet and bank network. That you don’t know what to do with money, doesn’t mean the same for others.
I was referencing a typical Nigerian, which obviously you are not. A typical Nigerian who suddenly comes into $40k will immediately become "big boy", buy better car, get better place with better furnishings, expensive funerals/weddings, upgrade their profile in society which comes with bigger exoenses, be show-off generous to relatives and friends, etc. Before long the money will be gone and they'd be back exactly where they were.
Osewa03: I've been here for more than 5yrs. Still, I visit Nigeria every year. In fact,I Just returned. Just can't wait to make cool dough and get the Bleep out of here. All those useless"I relocate for my unborn kids no apply to me" I just want to live first. Let's not lie and pretend that there are no aspects of Nigeria we all missed. I just missed the warm reception, good weather, eating nice food, going out whenever I like because the weather is okay and not damn freezing
Wow! This is honest, no hype. There are aspects of Naija that are priceless. Every single year you visit? Even durring 2020 COVID? You belong to a very small minority indeed. Contrast to this guy below who says he'll tear up his Nigerian passport!
iod69779: I have much more than that but I will not, NEVER. I will miss ordering from Amazon, hearing much less honking on the roads, not having a speed dial police number, having a stable job, fewer dust on the streets, more polite people, fewer places to run to and have a quick number 1 and all that
Every country has their issues but Nigeria issues are too basic and frustrating for the average person who has lived abroad so it's a No No
So how about all these people living in Nigeria who are much wealthier than you?? And what do you think of this post below? Let's not forget abroad has it's own disadvantages too
Osewa03: One thing I'll never understand is why you people say things like this. If money isn't the only reasons I'm in the west, what else? You think I like the loneliness, cold and the grumpy feelings of missing people, food, culture I left back home? Most of y'all think abroad is as rosy as you are made to believe by the media.
One thing I also noticed is that people say things like this when they get to abroad and notice that making money and saving large part of that money is not as easy as they thought, then you see them saying "I relocate to make a better Life for my unborn kids" not to enjoy or make money. I just tell them shut up bro, we all know how it works

pansophist: it is like you want to just argue for arguing sake. The countries I mentioned offer citizenship by birth unconditionally. All the parent has to do is apply for the child's passport, that's all. Go to the travel section, there is a popular thread of Nigerians going to Brazil to give birth, since Brazil is better than the US in that regard because it gives the parent permanent residency as well.
Now go ahead and argue for nothing.
I concede I didn't look at Brazil specifically, but I did look at other countries like India below. Then I looked at Brazil and YOU ARE RIGHT! Thanks for the info
princeemmma: Sometimes the wrong decision is the right way to live, sometimes the wrong decision is the right choice............. One way or the other he was trying to do the right thing, but he forgot the right thing does not really count in our world now
Assuming the man was a citizen, he will be honoured......
How are you that his being deported is not a HUGE blessing from God??
seanwilliam: Well, I personally will take 40k$ (32m)
I can always go to aboard for vacation, I no fit leave naija go Dey struggle.
If can make use of the 40k$ well, in 5 years , I’ll have enough to travel overseas and enjoy my life with my family. Nigeria is the best place to spend and enjoy money .
That's a big "IF" More likely: In 5 years the money will be long gone and you'd be exactly where you were
Crenzywilliams: I told my uncle, in 2019 when I arrived, I said, I relocate back to Nigeria and retire when I make £50k, he looked at me with a smile; and he told me the cost of his rang rover, it was £85. From that moment he didn't have to tell me to growup; get sense and aim high. You can easily save £10k/,year if you want to. You know my answer.
So how have things gone for you since 2019 when you arrived? Be honest (remember no one here knows who you are)
SunMusk: With what I know now I will stay in Nigeria with the 40k, are you kidding me. Even if I don't know anything I will still take the 40k.
Well, if you are a typical Nigerian it'll be a mistake - unless you have plans on the ground already as to how to turn it into real money. A typical Nigerian who suddenly comes into $40k will NEVER quietly work hard with it, knowing it is not that big. They'd instead immediately become "big boy", buy better car, get better place with better furnishings, expensive funerals/weddings, upgrade their profile in society which comes with bigger exoenses, be show-off generous to relatives and friends, etc. Before long that money will be gone. Guaranteed! And they'd be back exactly where they were. Therefore for the typical Nigerian, to do your research and japa to a better place of your choice with $1k in your pocket is a better choice!
pansophist: Canada, Brazil, Panama, India, Barbados, Lesotho, Tanzania, Antigua and Bermuda, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominica, Grenada, Honduras, Guatemala, etc. There's a lot more, but these I can remember
In all those countries you still have to apply to become a citizen. In US you are simply a citizen like everyone else
Buddha3: 40K dollars is 23.4million naira approximately.
Nigeria will finish that money for you in one year and if the business you decide to do (as some people have suggested), isn't strong enough to survive the first 18 months, you go poor pass when them never give you the 40K dols.
$40k is actually 40×800=$32m Does the new math change your mind?
pansophist: Why buy citizenship when you can smartly get it without spending such? Lots of countries offers citizenship by birth and because your child is a citizen, the parents have the right to stay there and cater for the child.
That's smarter than wasting such. That's why your celebs always gives birth abroad. So if your cash can't give you citizenship, your preek should
dazzlingd: I've decided to stop replying someone copying and pasting information from Google.
Someone that equates living on credit to debt doesnt understand Financial and how the western system runs.
The people he claimed are on debt are living in luxurious homes and driving luxurious cars and going for luxurious vacations, comparing them to Nigeria debtors that loan sharks will drag with beating on streets. Even when firms file for bankruptcy, the CEO goes home with his benefits
My brother it's not really as rosy as you paint it. Most of those people live lives of quiet desperation (never mind the flashy stuff.) They are enticed by offers and eventually find themselves trapped. See below
