I've observed that whenever there is a comparism between the wealth of these two billionaires, the Dangote-haters are always so quick to point out the "good works" of Oprah (that they sadly think is deficient in the character of Dangote), which is completely impertinent to the issue at hand.

Take note:  We're discussing their wealth, not philanthropy.

Even then, what makes the Dangote-haters so sure that Dangote isn't more philanthropic than Oprah?  Just because one doesn't publicize his goodwill doesn't make the one who does, any better.

You guys should stop quoting this webometrics stuff. A ranking that says the top 20 universities are in the US is definitely not doing a holistic ranking. I'm sure it's looking at just one thing. And the funny thing is that UNIBEN officials were making noise about it (that they have been ranked as the best university in Nigeria) without even checking out what it's about.

I expect that you should back up your objection with verifiable facts. Failing that, I choose to see your outburst as pure sentiments, which does not hold water.

Maybe the person meant DIPLOMA exam. It was written 2 weeks ago (18th).

As at this time last month, Obafemi Awolowo University was the number 1 university in Nigeria (and 44 in Africa), distantly followed by University of Ibadan, with University of Benin and University of Lagos coming 3rd and 4th respectively.  Interestingly, these were the only 4 universities in Nigeria ranked among the top 100 in Africa.

But right now as I type, University of Benin is number 1 in Nigeria (32 in Africa & 4904 in the world), distantly followed by Obafemi Awolowo University (now 55 in Africa & 6215 in the world), with University of Ibadan coming 3rd (81 in Africa & 7217 in the world), while University of Lagos is nowhere to be found.

I hope this new ranking will not break the heart of the people of OAU.  Personally, I'm saddened by this development. But can someone tell me what went wrong with the Great Ife? Their seemingly incessant strike actions, I presume?

Faborode, the Nigerian government, minister of education, etc should please do something fast (and I mean, real fast) about this 'cankerworm' that is fast diminishing the quality of the school that once used to be in the league of the likes of Havard!!!

In that version the passage is in fact rendered as Jesus saying "you pay, "; my apology: However the question I intended was that "pay" in the context did not refer to "money".

The inclusion or omission of "pay" wouldn't have changed what Christ meant in that verse.  Some other translations do not even have "pay", so that's off the mark for now.

I'll like to know though, what your persuasion really is on this matter.  Are you just against monetary tithing, or are you against tithing in general?  If it's the latter, then I expect that you should see the contradiction in your own persuasion, as Christ Himself acknowledged paying of tithes as essential.  He however only condemned the hypocritical attitude of the pharisees for using their tithing activity as a cover for righteousness and also their over-emphasis on it, at the expense of other weightier provisions of the law.

I wouldn't paraphrase Jesus's statement that way if I were you.  But I'm glad you acknowledge the fact that Jesus did not denounce tithing, though you got it quite wrongly in assuming that tithing is "just tithing".  In the meantime, allow me to quickly remind you that Jesus ended that statement with this:

      "these ought ye to have done, and NOT to leave the other undone"

Enigma, whatever you're driving at here remains enigmatic to me at the moment.  But I surely will never forget the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:17.

Isn't this rather too much of a contradiction, even to your own readership?  Agreed, Jesus wasn't outrightly commanding anyone to tithe in that particular verse.  But a diligent scrutiny reveals that He acknowledged tithing as an essential practice, hence, His injunction that we should not do one thing, and leave the other undone.  Why do you think He would not support tithing, while at the same time, tell "His enemies" to "make sure they were observing that law properly"?

Finally, don't just believe me or any other opponent of the modern "tithing"; take your time to read up again in context and study the Bible in more detail on the subject of tithing;

Good admonition.  But it would be very beneficial if you took your own advice as well.

I love your well-thought analysis of layi's claims, and to be honest, I would also share the same notion, if only I didn't know him too well.

What I see that is going on here is just some misinterpretations, misunderstanding & misrepresentation of posts.  The message Layi was trying to pass across was perceived wrongly by some people which is now causing chaos.  Perhaps, the manner in which he did it was not appealing to some folks, which is understandable, knowing the usual Nigerian 419 syndrome.

This guy, Layi, is totally innocent of all the pseudo-allegations and allegations brought against him.  Believe me.

I must confess that I am really enjoying this discourse, but I briefly want to address one of Enigma's points.

Also, I don't know what early christians you refer to here, and I do not understand where you got the idea that the church building is 'just a building'.  If it were just that, and not so important to God, I do not think He would have prohibited David from erecting 'just a building' for Him, and instead, pass the privilege to Solomon to build a temple for Him; and I also do not think that Jesus would find it necessary to often preach the word in the synagogue.

Bro, there's much more to the church building than what you think of it.  In the temple dwells the Holy of Holies.

As I said already, context matters a lot in issues like this.  While not disputing your point, it is as well important to note that this also does not apply here.  If we study the Scriptures carefully, we will see that Solomon built the temple, for The Name of the Lord (1 Kings 5:5), as well as for the Lord Himself.  I guess you can draw your inference from here.

The Federal Government has barred universities in the country from compelling candidates who sat for the University Matriculation Examination to pay extra money before they could participate in the post-UME screening test.

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, disclosed this on Tuesday at the 9th Joint Consultative meeting of the Policy Committee on Admission into Degree-Awarding Institutions.

Ojerinde said that a committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Committee of Vice Chancellors, resolved that the “post UME should be conducted at no cost to the candidates or their parents.”

The decision of the government might not be unconnected with the discovery that the universities were using the post-UME screening to rip-off candidates.

A source at the Joint Consultative meeting told our correspondent that the issue generated heated argument.

The source added that participants “finally agreed that the post-UME screening should be conducted at no cost to the candidates or their parents.”

You and I know that this issue of religion is far more sensitive than you make it seem. We're just very fortunate to have cool-headed Muslims in Lagos.

If this is true, then I think the question we should all be asking is:

How will the ban be effected? Will Fashola place a policeman in every public bus to watch out for those that preach in buses? Or are the passengers to push out anyone preaching in the bus? How exactly will this ban be effected? I'm so curious to know.

My first trip by air was in 1996; I was very young then.  It was a flight from Lagos to Warri. 

I can remember that the airport was really cool and smelling nice.  The aircrafts were so big (it was my first time seeing one on ground).  I remember there was a long delay before takeoff that day, because we had to wait for a plane which was coming to Lagos through the same route as ours to land.  Eventually, we took off.  As the plane was speeding through the runway, I felt like a superstar .  And just as the plane was leaving the ground, I felt like my heart was in my mouth .  I was quite scared, but as soon as we got into the clouds, I was calm, and suddenly my eardrums were slightly blocked; I could barely hear clearly.  Looking down through the window was a memorable and pleasant sight to behold, as everyone appeared like ants .  There was a time I couldn't see beyond the clouds though.  At that point, I felt like placing my hand out of the window to catch the clouds (like in Care Bears ).

Not too long after we landed at the Warri airport, my ears opened again.  It seemed like a miracle to me.   The trip was a lovely experience anyway.

Since then, I've flown to and fro the same destination about 5 other times.  One of such flights that I will never forget was when we were about to land at the Warri airport.  It seemed the pilot was a bit inexperienced, as the plane just suddenly hit the ground, and made the whole plane quite unstable.  Everyone was in panic, but I kept my cool.

Actually, FOREX is very real.  The only possible scam that may exist (or already exists) is some sweet-talking so-called FOREX expert collecting money from unsuspecting folks and offering to help them trade the market with juicy promises of high ROI within the shortest time possible, and before the 'donor' realizes, the 'expert' zooms off.

And talking about Layi, he's a well-respected member of this forum (he's been here since 2005), and I trust he'll never do any of the things you suspect of him.  His talking about the wealth he has amassed from the FX market should not be seen as boasting.  For those of us that know him better, we know that's his own unique style of motivating the hopeless and clueless.
