With the Party Chairman, Dep. Senate President, and now Governor of an oil rich state from the region, the SS are clearly ripe to take their rightful position in the APC making it a truly national party, and have a good chance to clinch the party's presidential ticket for the next election.

This wouldn't have been possible without Jonathan Our Hero.

What makes you think that with the terrible state of roads and insecurity that this same line would not have experienced same sharp increase if not more?

The reason for the deficit is because of inefficiency due to running costs and not because the route lacks passengers or is not lucrative. The main culprit is diesel cost for generators according to your article, which is national challenge no matter where the rails are located until we fix the power problem. Even at that they're still making so much money that the management is optimistic of breaking even soon (if they haven't already done so since that report considering their revenue growth rate).

Can you say a service whose revenue increased X5 within one year isn't lucrative? Absolutely not.

Did anyone tell you the other rail lines aren't lucrative as well? Do you know the level of trade and commerce between Lagos and Kano? Do you have the figures to reach such an assumption? For instance, I know for a fact that the Kaduna - Abuja daily rail service makes over N2m per trip, and it's always overbooked even with inflated prices (even after they had to officially raise prices due to demand).

I would ordinarily like development projects implemented across the country because the truth is we are all beneficiaries (I've used the Onitsha Niger bridge myself more than once), but I'm simply restating the political reality that goodwill & diplomacy are needed if you want to be made a priority among competing interests.
