I have. This is one of many articles that say his mother was Akan, and his father unknown: http://www.peoplesworld.org/article/today-in-labor-history-nat-turner-is-born/

The sites that cite an Igbo origin exhibit clear Igbocentric biases which make their reliability questionable.

This list is incomplete without the Zanj rebellion that took place in Iraq against the Arab slavers, who would also castrate the slave men so that they don't not procreate with the Arab women. You all should read up on it. it's quite interesting also 'Zanji' is an alternate name for referring to a black person in Arabic along with '3abeed' which means slave.
Except that Arabs are not Europeans or people of European descent, whom the thread appears to be focusing on.

Moreover it's not in our nature as Yorubas to visit hostile lands where you can't make headway in life due to tribalism or where they eat people as delicacy.

CultureRe: Origin Of The Name Bello?! by RedboneSmith(m): 9:17am On Oct 02, 2017
kjhova:
Dear OP,

It is heart breaking that 5 pages into this simple question, no one is close to the answer enough due to the acute knowledge of history among Nigerians

The name/surname/root name Bello is common in Spain, Portugal, Nigeria and many parts of South America (due to Spanish colonization) & West Africa (due to Muslim influence).

Let me connect the dots for you.

Bello (and its other variants; Barro, Ballo etc) were common Tuareg/Berber names in the 10th century even as these tribes were converted to Islam during the 1st Caliphate's spread across North Africa and the Sahara. The name spread to the Iberian peninsula (I.e. Spain, Portugal) & Corsica when these regions were conquered by the Almoravids and later by the Almohades who were Moroccan peoples consisting of many ethnicities including Berbers, Arabs, Tuaregs, Fulas and black West Africans!

The name became standard surname in Spanish at this time and remained so even after the Muslims were driven out 400years later by the reconquistas.

Around this time, Cristober Colombo discovered the New World which led to Spanish colonization of most of South America. The surname Bello went with them to these new countries and remains there till today.

The Fulas introduced the name to the many nationalities they encountered across West Africa including the Wollof, Dagomba, Hausa, Nupe, Yoruba, Edo, Igalla etc.

The name has even sipped into modern Western Arabic and it exists scarcely in places far east as Sudan and Egypt!

So yes Bello, as a name, has primarily been spread across the world by the influence of Spanish and Islam.

And it is indeed a beautiful and historically rich name borne by many diverse peoples across diverse countries all over the world.

Cc: @Ogbonti

I believe I have explained why Ramon Bello played alongside Gabby Batistuta for Argentina in 1994.
Nice write-up. The Berber/Arab colonisation of Spain is true enough. It is also true some influence from the colonisation is still visible in Spain, Portugal and Sicily.

However the connection you made between Fulani Ballo/Bello and Spanish Bello is fictitious. They are two very different names that accidentally sound alike.

Fulani Ballo/Bello = Helper/assistant.

Spanish Bello = Handsome

It is similar to Lola which is both a Yoruba and a Spanish name with different meanings in the two languages.

As I am also called Bello myself.... i realised it's an italian name meaning beautiful... also here in Germany most of my italian friends attest to my findings anytime I tell them my name is Bello dapo... they emphasised on how beautiful the name is in italian.... the only explanation to the name crossing to Nigerian was the Roman Catholic missionaries..... As most people belief it's a Muslim name which is not... not in the Qur'an and never an Arabic name
Roman Catholic missionaries, and yet somehow the name is not common among Catholics in Nigeria, but is common among Fulanis (who are not Christians) and other tribes that came in close contact with Fulanis like Nupe, Yoruba, some Edo, etc. So Catholic missionaries gave Sultan Muhammad Bello his name in the 19th century? Which Catholic Missionary went to Sokoto in the 19th century?

Persians wearing turban as early as 300 BC.

This mosaic is the scene of a battle between Alexander the Great of Greece-Macedonia and Darius King of the Persians (circa 330 BC). The Persians are on the right. Note their turbans.

The turban pre-dates Islam by centuries if not millenia, and must have spread into Africa through trade routes with Asia, and didn't necessarily go hand in hand with the spread of Islam. There is even a Christian sect in Kenya that is noted for tying turbans.

Bello..from the Latin word "belus" ie beautiful, handsome...oga it's not a Fulani name o.. don't localize the name
I am sure Usman Dan Fodio did not speak Latin in the 19th century, yet his son was called Muhammadu Bello. Let's agree that the Latin Bello and the Fulani Bello are different words that by coincidence happen to look similar.

You guys did not even watch the video. The guy accusing the African leaders of being criminals is an African himself. He is from Equatorial Guinea. And everything he said is true.

There should be more Africans in the diaspora showing up to disgrace the heck out of African politicians when they turn up in Washington DC or London in their fine clothes. They deserve every embarrassment they get.

African leaders should be met with more of the same kind of embarrassing treatment when they go to Europe and North America. The personal humiliation may be what they need to actually get round to trying to fix their countries.

I started having doubts before I even watched the video. It'd take a lot of balls to leak the sextape of a sitting African head of state's daughter. You can just disappear no questions asked.

My doubts even increased after watching the video. Why would a Francophone woman, in her throes of passion, be speaking English and not French or whatever native Congolese language she speaks? Even if she speaks English as a third language, it still is strange that that is the language she would recourse to in the intense moments of sexual pleasure.

I am calling bullshit on this video. Fake. She doesn't even look exactly like her.

Taboo?

I've attended enough Igbo man/non-Igbo woman weddings to know this statement is ridiculous. I've seen enough Igbo man/non-Igbo woman couples that have lived happily for decades to know this statement is ridiculous.

Until I see statistics that there is a greater reluctance in Igboland for the men to seek wives outside than the reluctance that exists in other tribes, I maintain that your view is very subjective.

By the way, I am from the Igbo part of Delta State, and I haven't had very good experiences with my Yoruba exes either, because their families didn't approve of 'omo ibo'. You don't see me whining about it and calling Yorubas tribalists.

Smh. And you are sure there is no legitimate reason why they have problems with Lola, other than that she is Yoruba? You don't know what goes down in the Okoye household, but you want to tie it down to tribal hatred because you had a bad experience with an Igbo guy?

the Ibos are open to Rivers people like the Ikwerre...they are considered Ibo...now the thing with Ibos: Their sons marrying a none ibo especially Yoruba...they will frustrate the life of that union in anticipation for him to marry from "home"...in very rare cases do you see the man stick with his choice and follow through.
And this is based on, what, anecdotal evidence? I bet you don't know that based on anecdotal evidence the same can be said of the Yorubas and other ethnic groups too.

You didn't answer my first question though: Do you believe that Peter is having problems with Paul SPECIFICALLY because of Lola's ethnicity?
