All these nonsensical beauty paegents will end when Nigerians organise their politics around ideologies rather than sentiment. We have seen the limitations of passion over purpose. |
This incident has erased every doubt as to what leadership is all about in Nigeria at present. |
Rotjijatau:How do you fight the pandemic, with your teeth? Be sensible please. |
Good initiative. Those service providers should give something back to society at this time of global upheaval. Everyone is making a sacrifice. |
This is reprehensible by the United States and the international community should totally condemn this in no uncertain terms. Just disgusted. Anyone who takes this offer at this time should have his Nigerian citizenship withdrawn permanently, forever. There is no depth of unpatriotism that is worse than this. America will never accept this of its citizens. |
All these topics just to stoke racial profiling. Nothing cerebral about them. They only appeal to sentiment. |
Good job Bosch. Knew they would do it. |
Bluezy13:Take it or leave it. It is non of my business. Said enough. Check the facts independently. You are online. Just donot mislead people into a false sense of safety. Stay indoors and you will not require PPE. If you MUST go out or someone you live with social distance and observe sanitary practices frequently. That's all. Every other thing is a false flag. I don't know what you are upset with. I didn't bring corona to Nigeria and my stance since January has been clear, prevention is better than cure. And I am telling you now, stay indoors. You are far safer than going out with that thing on your face. It will not save you. |
Draught:Oga. Surgical masks are not effective against the respiratory virus. Donot mislead people. Tell the truth so that there is no false sense of safety. Frontline medical professionals are using the N95 mask. Where these are not available due to obvious shortage round the world they manage these surgical masks because they have no option but to continue working and that is also why a growing number if medical folks are getting infected. It is like our soldiers fighting Boko Haram. Often times equipment becomes short in quality and quantity. During those periods soldiers continue fighting because that is their job. Obviously casualties escalate but they continue. It will then be wrong to say everything is normal because you see soldiers manage with inadequate equipment. The NMA has been complaining about the lack of adequate PPE equipement round hospitals throughout Nigeria. This doesn't mean they won't work but make no mistake, more doctors will get infected and will die if the right kit is not provided. |
Bluezy13:Those images you refer to are investigative laboratories where sterile regimes are critical to obtaining accurate results, be it medical laboratories, pharma laboratories or crime laboratories. They wear the surgical masks so as no to contaminate the samples under review. Same reason for the surgical gloves. Where danger to the handler is suspected more advanced PPE is used. And I have said the N95 is the minimum standard. It has a full cup, snug around the face profile, is substantially thicker and some versions have a built in particulate filter cartridge. Most surgical masks I see folks wear donot even wrap around the nose and mouths properly. And this false sense of security is more dangerous as it nulifies the need to social distance and sanitize frequently. But whatever rocks your boat. Hey, a simple tip. If you want any element of protection from that rag across your face, turn it the other way round so the green or blue is in on your face and the white lint filter is outside. Odd but is less crazy. |
AmuDimkpa:Don't mind him. Surgeons and nurses speak a lot during procedures and operations to pass across instructions and record cases. It will be a calamity to have droplets falling into an exposed cadaver on the table. Then as my relation who is a cardio-surgeon who trained in Italy will say they will then go round the corner between surgery for cigarette breaks. I don't think you want a doctor who is doing a 15 hour shift to breathe into your face. |
honest1480:Technically no. If your immune system is not compromised it produces antibodies, that is special proteins that help fight the virus, in large enough quantities and warehoudwarehouseses them for future defence. It will interest you to note that clinical trials have begun using the serum of those recoveted ftom the disease to see whether their antibodies could fight off the virus in sick patients. So if you recover your blood could be worth more than gold.... in theory. However there is a caveat. If the virus mutates rapidly, ie presents as a moving target or fights guerilla warfare like the HIV, then antibody clinical regimes become ineffective. |
Well you know where they live. If you don't have food to eat due to isolation just go and remove the tyres. |
Duru9:Not proven. |
Told you so when you were 'tracking' 130. |
Hotfreez:So I've been telling folks for long now. Surgical masks are an in to out protector. They are worn during clinical or surgical procedure to prevent the medical officer contaminating the patient, equipment or specimens. In the Covid 19 battle they are worn to protect the patient not the doctor and worn by those infected to prevent them spreading it to others. The minimum standard fir disposable protection is the N95 series of masks, tthe best out there produced by 3M. The cheapest ones retail for about N25,000 a pack. Generally if you can maintain a social distance you don't need them even in public. I wouldn't wear them exceot if visiting a hospital. One is more likely to contract the virus off surfaces making frequent hand washing and sanitizing a more effective preventive measure. |
sevo:Indeed loans...but those can be forgiven. What about insurance for stock losses. Perishables will rot, products will expire, chemicals will denature, rains are coming so cement will hydrate and calcify in stores, sites, silos and on trucks...the list goes on and on. Without clear policy positions I cannot see the insurance industry for instance surviving the claims that it will be inundated with post pandemic. The goverment is seriously behind the COVID reality curve. What the hell had they been doing since January when other countries began to struggle. Abi they just sat down watching Contagion movie. They didn't see it coming. |
Too late for Abuja residents as the police has invaded some markets, shutting down shops and harassing patrons..... and here we go. |
otokx:Oga, how did you arrive at 21 days. Wuhan is the most successful story so far. They are on partial reopening now, not even full opening after being shut down since January, two and a half months ago. No other nation comes near that performance. Can Nigeria shutdown for 2 months and recover unscathed without mass layoffs. Remember China was growing at 6 percent before Covid-19 with cash reserves of over a trillion dollars. Nigeria on the other hand was seeking to balance her budget with a 20 billion dollar loan and growth barely scratching 1 percent. How anyone can expect us to recover at the same pace and to the same point as China remains a mystery. It will take us far longer to beat Corona and the lasting damage far deeper. Speaking from the point of realism. |
Seun:Seun, I said as far back as early February that this pandemic was more an economic battle than a healthcare one. Let this be clear to Nigerians. We donot have social security, we donot have medicaid and medical insurance remains in its infancy. The typical Nigerian pays his medical bills from his pocket, he will have to pay to receive Covid -19 treatmemt from a pocket that is under threat now. As we speak even goverment doctors are being asked to source their PPE to battle this scourge. The government cannot provide the basic tools of war. That is how under resourced our goverment is. Now you ask your citizens to fight this pestilence with one economic hand tied behind their backs. How is the country going to win. If this pestilence lasts till the end of the year, who can survive 8 months without income. Can this country survive a year without an agricultural planting season?....You shut the markets and farmers cannot sell their produce, why will they cultivate anew even as the rains have come. This thing has long term implications. Other nations are precise and deliberate in their planning. They have an entry and exit strategy to shutting down. What is the strategy of this government in handling this crises. Please help me ask them. |
To passenger transit or goods because no nation I know so far has shut down its logistics network. Such a state will just collapse within a short time span. Goverment should be clear about that. And should set a specific duration for such an event. Once again and I will continue to reiterate this for the benefit and responsibility of the citizens: It is the solely the Federal government's fault for allowing things to deteriorate to this level when they had the strategic opportunity to co trol thus pandemic from the get go. Through indolence the cou try is aboitto enter a new phase of socio-economic deterioration the likes we may nothave seen since the civil war. Many people, businesses and enterprises will not recover from this pandemic. |
Closed for how long... 1 week, 2 weeks.... 1 month, six months, 1 year, 2 years..... I laugh. We have not started yet. We have not started discussing this. We have not started finding the ways and means to keep thus country from imploding completely. What is the exit strategy of all these. This is a pressure cooker scenario. |
In Nigeria it is the economics that will decide the outcome of the pandemic not the medics. I simply cannot see how the country can be locked down for the months required to contain it. My concern is that Nigerians are not bothered. They are not asking the authorities any questions whatsoever....what a weak country. |
BreconHills:Oga. That is their right. In a pandemic everyone has a right to life and will fight for scraps. This is not the time for political correctness. Citizens of the world are holding their governments to task. Kay Burley is taking the British Health Minister to task right now on Skynews about Prince Charles getting tested but doctors are not. And you are here making stupid excuses for senselessness and selfishness. Why will people not talk. |
Ouchbabe:Realising today what we had been saying since last month. |
faruqola:Indeed, the virus is easy to get but extremely difficult to rid off. The recovery rate is slow meaning gridlock at hospitals. That is why you do everything to ensure it does not take root in your country. I am angry with the goverment for this. They caused all this by not shutting the borders in a timely manner or making returnee quarantine mandatory in government controlled locations. I have always said that the government is run by special interest for special interests. However they were put there by the citizens so the ultimate responsibility for a country's fortunes lie with the citizens who choose their leaders at the polls. When the virus laden dust has settled I do hope the citizens of this country will come to realise how important it is to choose the right leadership in the future, leadership that respects the wishes of its citizens, one that listens and obeys. One that fears the people. Look through the posts is the last few days, the 'Hailers' have fallen silent. You don't hear idolatry anymore. They have left the ignorant fence sitters in the lurch after bombarding them for years with propaganda about how good their pet leaders are. The pandemic has revealed the exact opposite. |
planetx13:I am receiving reports from some Federal Hospitals that doctors are being asked to buy their own PPE for their work.... ....and that April salaries are not guaranteed due to the revenue profille of goverment. No comment for now. Nigeria is in serious jeopardy. |
Kizyte:Nice. Wish your works could be published. In a Nigerian version of Reader's Digest. |
annisy:Looking back at everything that has happened so far and in trying to compare the ebola crises with this one I think the clear difference is not the competence of either this government or the previous one but the ability to receive feedback from the citizenry and acting on it. Without a doubt the previous goverments were a lot more user friendly, more open to criticism and thus more responsive to the mood and angst of the people. Nigerians scream about something en masse for a week and they somehow respond. This government is just too hard to reach and too slow to respond. It is as if the entire cou try is against them and are playing politics so they besiege themselves in enclaves and receive impetus from small groupings of varying interests who largely dictate how they respond to things. The wider your response in a democracy the smaller your liability. The PDP goverments were not briliant by a country mile but they knew how to put Nigerians at the wheel of their own destinies and see the outcomes for themselves. |
Then within a week the markets will be empty and hyper inflation will set in and within a month crime will be rampant. Then you will be forced to reopen to select goods, services and people, then an administrative nightmare will arise. But in all this the virus will still not have passed by. And as soon as a crack emerges it will enter Rivers State then folks will ask, what in the world was the initial lock up for. No country so far has closed down completely, not even China did at the height of their troubles and not even Italy now. It is impossible to shut a coubtry down completely without mass casualties resulting. The best solution so far is mandatory, government supervised quarantine. Thst we failed to do from the get go. It is now too late. Rivers State CANNOT STOP COVID 19 FROM ENTERING. Once a country has been breached it will get everywhere. The only hope is to slow its spread down to gain enough time to prepare, not to go home in mistaken security. The WHO has told us the way to go is TEST, TEST, TEST. |
Slymonster:When you analyse a country's strength and you calculate its GDP, count the number of tanks and missiles it can deploy or ranking of its universities.... ...but cannot rank or rate, 'the state of the nation', the power of social cohesion, that is basically the ability of the people to agree with one another to achieve things... then it is a waste of time. Nigeria has an additional burden of a fractured society which this pandemic will exploit, fractured along ethno-religious lines which we know well but with this pandemic we will also see schisms around economics, privilege and class. Weak social cohesion manifests in the level of greed a society tolerates, the level of insensitivity to fellow citizens and apathy towards authorities. Nations with strong social capital like China weathered the storm quickly. They obeyed authorities, supported one another and fought together without bias. Nations with weak social cohesion such as Italy where authorities seemingly cannot get the citizens to obey any order, a country that could not even enforce the worldwide public smoking bans properly, a country that changes its political leadership like underwear are battling yard to contain it. You just wonder how a society like Nigeria where it is strictly a battle ground for the 'strong', a chapter out of National Geographic, where social cohesion is almost non existent, giving way to survival at all costs.... A nation where the manufacture and retail of fake drugs is called business, a nation where disaster regimes are exploited for gain, a nation where lives are left behind purposes, a nation where the police and army instead of assisting are exploiting... just how are we going to win this fight against corona. Who will get the scarce ventilators, who will get the first drugs out of trial, who will get the limited hospital beds, who will get the last yam in the market or the last can of petrol.... very soon who will get electricity...who will the police protect when their colleagues begin to succumb to corona in numbers.... |
Pandemic 101: The implosion of society. That is why we have been shouting, screaming and cursing that we should have closed our borders We donot have the financial, organisational and moral competence as a country to withstand this. I have been innundated with calls this morning from overseas and in Nigeria about how bad this thing could go in Nigeria and how long it will take to normalise. I simply donot know. Statistics and projections donot work well here. Nigerians should just strap in. |
