Adakintroy2:I was on leave when this incident broke early January and it was clear to me that this thing will be worse than SARS. A good month passed and the WHO did nothing but useless press conferences everyday. It was when I returned to operations in February they reluctantly agreed to label it a pandemic and only after European countries began to make a racket. Trump was equally slow to react like a good number of countries but you simply cannot expect the primary global health watchdog to be so tardy. They should be experts for goodness sake. |
They should collect the money from China since they sat in Beijing twiddling their thumbs while ingesting massive amounts of falsehood from the Communist party and refusing declare it a pandemic or demand for a lockdown of China as late as February when it was visible to the blind that the world was in crises. The world should begin to learn and adapt to Chinese standards of life and living. |
Jack500:Very unlikely it will end. The government is in quicksand on this. |
This ship has long sailed. This is past tense. Issues that should have been sorted out a long time ago. A weak citizenry cannot exert any influence and cannot expect anything positive. Please let us focus on sorting out this pandemic. This government have been experts since 2015 at dividing Nigeria along ethnographic lines. We have tolerated it for too long to change it now at this instance. |
12 dead of Corona Virus, 18 dead by the police. We just donot have the capacity. Received security reports that communual crime has emerged in Abuja similar to those reported in Lagos and Ogun, specifically in the satellite town of Lugbe. The government must act now to find a solution to this pandemic. It cannot afford to listen to the NCDC alone. This problem is becoming multi-faceted. Government should not sit on its hands and watch the society implode. The consequences are dire. We warned of an early lockdown and they did not act promptly, see the consequences. Now we warn again about the subsequent problems arising from widespread poverty.... |
SirWarlock:No, but the strategy to testing is three fold. 1. Testing the contacts of known cases. 2. Testing those at ultra high risk namely medical professionals and responders, thise already in medical facilities in proximity to treatement centres. 3. Testing those key to keeping the economy running. Once you can cover these three groups you have done half the job. You can begin to reopen your economy safely. There will be new case but you will be able to spot them quickly and handle them more effectively. |
Better. Whatever progress will give purpose to the lockdown. Testing is a strategy. Lockdown is not. Testing is the only way to move closer to containment. |
Toluobaeko11:You are being evasive, insensitive and economical with the truth just like our government. What do you mean by, 'it is better to be hungry for a month or two....' Where have you seen anyone in the world at anytime, through any experience starve himself to death because he feared danger of death. Just think about it for a minute. It is just not psycholigically possible. No one can do this no matter the risk assessment. Even in war people willgo out to forage for food as we have seen in Syria, Iraq and even Bornu. Please just don't go there. The lo ger the lockdown the less the compliance. Take it or leave it. You cannot appeal this. French, Italians, Americans they copy are not starving in their homes. The palliatives India is rolling out amounts to 11 trillion naira yet they are still in a battle to lockdown. Civil strife is going on there too. |
Christthesaviour:Simple. When an effective vaccine is found says the WHO. That is when we can be absolutely sure. China has just stsrted trials but the earliest dste given is by January 2021. Before then it will spike amd recede everywhere in the world. |
IkpuNnegiEwu44:Then the 'struggling trader' had better cry out and start demanding answers from those that ordered for the lockdown. This is the capacity we were talking about. |
These are the things visionary, intelligent leadership envisages, anticipates and in our case have moved quickly to shut international borders, all too long ago. The success of the pandemic battle does not lie with the elites who flew in from Europe and America and can afford a lockdown in perpetuity but it lies this with those we see in the video. If the government cannot calm them down it will extend and extend and extend... Now for those who think a dying horse is being flogged here, the question that should be asked is, what are the authorities doing today Wednesday, 15th April, to make sure the situation we see here is not substantially worse tomorrow, by next week and by the time lockdown is due for extension... |
hamid6249:It is not a stupid rationale. It is a normal rational. But for you I am sure your support for government will blind you to the reality that a lot of businesses were not doing well before the pandemic. How many of them have the means you describe here. What government does in other places is to guarantee businesses both big and small the means to keep their workers as the first line of palliatives. It is government that is locking down. It is them that should provide the means of compliance. If government doesn't have the means or the will to palliate then it should fashion alternative strategies to total lockdown in fighting corona. Because if it squeezes people in between a rock and a hard place they will not willingly comply. I want to ask you this simple question. What do you expect of Nigeria if this 'lockdown' continues till December... for instance. |
The short answer is: The structure of any commercial enterprise is inherently similar to any individual or personality. Without the possibility of external assistance The business, company or firm will sustain its workers on three merits: Its needs. Its resources. Its character. The lock down will eventually end so if it BADLY needs its workers to stay alive it will do everything it can plus more to keep them. If it has the resources to, either out of vast reserves or highly liquid assets or access to credit underpinned by the possibility of a post pandemic rebound. Not every business will rebound to the same levels after such a severe economic upheaval such as this. The character of the business, its ownership or its promoters. If they are either socialist or humanitarian in character, yes, tthey will go to severe lengths to keep staff. If they are hard nosed capitalists with great latitude due to lax laws and the setting is highly informal.... which accounts for the vast majority of Nigerian businesses then the outlook is very dire indeed. Now, all these factors depend on how long the lockdown will last. That is the reason why I say repeatedly that it is important that the government gives clarity and leadership as to first of all what makes for the lockdown and what they expect to see before it is lifted so that businesses and the economy can build resilience. If things remain open ended and uncertain it is likely most businesses will seek to cut costs immediately because the owners and promoters too are human and want to survive. Leadership is critical. The dynamics of the pandemic in Nigeria is simple. The more people are strained financially either through poverty or job loss the less likely there is to be social cohesion. The lockdown will become less and less effective and the vicious cycle of poverty and spread will escalate. These are the things the egg heads in government should be deeply concerned about. How to square this circle. |
That is what a proper government does. It assesses its capacity and in admission of its limitations formulates strategies around its capabilities. No point in promising what it cannot deliver and in the process lying to its citizens. Just waiting for the next admission, that it cannot lockdown Nigeria. Like I was saying to someone this morning the end game of this pandemic in Nigeria is simple. The government will end up lifting restrictions after the whole economy is severely damaged. The number of cases will still be escalating by then but there will be scant resources to contain it. So we lose the economy and lose the pandemic battle as well. Nigerians must begin to prepare themselves mentally for this pandemic. We are still living in denial, that there will not be mass casualties and also that we have the capacity to put a lid on this situation. I have not seen anything from the government or the citizens to suggest otherwise. |
Biafrarep:You don't need to go far. 3 kilometres from Asokoro the Federal Capital ends. Before the gates people are going about freely. Just passed by on my way to Lafia this morning and people are out and about. Will see how the situation is on my way back. The lockdown is not working. |
If it can be seen then how is it a spirit. Dogs cannot see spirits. Like some animals they have a much larger iris and have a superior dikation capability enabling their eyes to absorb more light and see better at night. Their sense of smell is also superior. However what often puts them on edge is their sense of hearing. They can hear at frequencies outside the human hearing range. Noises caused by a variety of things we cannot hear and this disturbs them. They are not seeing things but hearing things. |
cruxgemmata:You can touch your face. Just wash your hands frequently. If outside learn to use a hanky around the hand used to open doors, hold railings and carrying hard objects. Bin for wash immediately on arrival at home, simple. If the Covid 19 threat densifies we will all know then self isolarion will become more imperative. I go out almost everyday and have never worn a mask, but other precautions I take with utmost seriosuness because I have experienced influenza before and I know the best routes it takes to peoples lungs. Contaminated surfaces is the biggest problem. You can social distance and face mask all you like but as long as you move around it is extremely hard not to touch things, things that may have been handled by an infected person long gone. That is the route of most infections. |
quinox947:Please it is enough. This ship has long sailed. What citizens like you should be doing is seeking ways out for yourself, your community and for the goverment not playing games. We are in the midst of a serious crises to which your goverment has very little capacity to handle. You should be more concerned about that. |
Jestin:The WHO said yesterday that this pandemic will likely continue till a vaccine is available. That means a years time (january to march 2021). Meanwhile the only way to reduce the cases to a manageable number to enable any form of economic activity is to massively test for Covid 19 which Nigeria is not doing now. So our lockdown will be far longer than most other countries, the shortest being China, 6 weeks. And since we are not making it nationwide and absolute I cannot see the incidences of cases fall anytime soon. In two weeks there will be more cases and more folks in hospital and the NCDC will force the President to extend yet again. And since this goverment has no alternate strategy you can safely say Nigeria may be locked down one way or another till January 2021 at the earliest. Two things are critical here. A massive increase in testing or an alternative strategy to combat covid 19. Without these two or one of these two Nigeria is sunk. Very, very few, not even the Federal goverment will be able to last till 2021 without productivity. |
Nigerians will not sleep because they put their leaders to sleep. Nigerians will continue under pressure because they don't put their leaders under pressure. Nigerians will continue in poverty because they donot questions the resources they permit their leaders to have. If the people of these areas continue to tolerate this sub-human existence and do nothing then what do they expect others, outsiders to do. If you live there and pay tax and the goverment uses your taxes to hire policemen to guard themselves then you live under a monarchy..... sorry. |
guru90:Because they refuse to do the right thing in peace time. What is the right thing... vote intellectually not sentimentally.... And after voting for better or worse making sure they take the reins of governace through persistent civil pressurez not sitting idly by and 'hoping' political leaders to the right thing.... because they naturally will not. As an example. Mr. President came up yesterday to give a national speech thay was essentially lean on substance. You will have expected that Nigwrians will be up in arms seeking for a concrete strategy to end the pandemic or a timeline of activity towards an end but it appears even the goverment is helpless, the Presidential task force left at the mercy of the NCDC. Now, if the pandemic has no exit strategy and thus an open time limit, it is safe to say that people and institutions offering citizen help will begin to reassess their capacity to offer such help. In a nutshell if I had an extra N100 to help I will be willing to let it go if I knew I would not need it before the problem is over. But if I feel I will run out of resources too... It is critical that goverment gets ahead of this pandemic and not let the virus dictate its own pace. Resources will also have a big say in what the outcome of this battle will be at all levels. |
Said it. Nigeria cannot be locked down and so Nigeria cannot defeat this pandemic the way western countries seek to. We need alternative strategies if not it will be long drawn and tedious. |
teadrake:Because your country often disagrees with them on issues of economic governance. They will help countries they can influence. No bank will give you a loan if it cannot have a say on how you use the money and how you run your business thoughtless of forgiving your unsustainable debts. As long as we cannot run our country along lines of best international practices we will continue in circles. |
Angelfrost:Another 2 weeks....of course. |
Neoteny7:Not all countries are locked down. Sweden, Brazil and even Japan that got its first case way back in January is not locked down. Some countries have at the heart of their strategy a rigorous testing regime for the virus. Others for the antibodies so that they know who can get back to work. Secondly, yes every leader is sounding politically correct by stating that the science will determine their strategies going forward. The WHO has warned about that as well but what we have seen is that China has restarted its economy to an extent so has Korea and even Spain. Italy is planning for next week. Trump has vowed for May. That is the reality. The science will be taken in context by everyone eventually. Mark this. Countries will take risks ahead of any vaccine and will be prepared for a tolerable level of casualties. No country will be able to wait till it has zeroed its cases. Most countries will find the ways and means to move forward. |
Nigerians let us be practical here. The goverment is not telling us exactly what they need to see to lift restrictions. They should be candid about that if not we can assume we will be locked down for months to come. As citizens we need to plan. Even those involved in charity will need to create sustainable models to ensure they are able to lend support for the duration of the pandemic induced lockdown. |
Neoteny7:The lockdown in Europe and America is primarily to prevent the health system from being overwhelmed not to rid the country of the virus. Viruses cannot be eradicated from society particularly influenza viruses. Our goverment is not telling us the specific reason why they are locking down, what problems they are addressing by slowing down the tempo of society. That is what I looked for in the speech. What were they not able to do last two weeks that they are able to do now that points to an exit strategy. If not we will continue this lockdown without end. Influenza is not ebola. Cases will take years to zero out without a vaccine. Will we wait that long in lockdown. The strategy of most successful countries such as Korea, New Zealand and Germany has been rigorous testing to determine who has the virus so that they can be either treated or isolated far ahead of them spreading it. These are countries with populations in fractions of Nigeria's with testing ten, twenty times ours. If they are only opening thier economies after two months you can imagine how long it will take Nigeria to open up with just 1,500 tests a day. That is why I repeatedly ask for a specific alternate strategy which may or may not require lockdowns. Remember not every country is in lockdown. Japan, Turkey amongst several countries have alternative programs to total lockdown and are doing well. It is not the lockdown that matters but what you do with it. Lockdown is merely a tool of social distancing just like anaesthesia is a tool of surgery. If you put a patient to sleep and do nothing what do you gain. You can extend the anaesthesia all you like, the patient will not improve without a treatment strategy. I repeat again the NCDC should not be the sole determinant of this game play. Pandemics are far more than health issues. |
Neoteny7:You can do better than this. India is rolling out 27 billion dollars stimulus. The Spanish construction industry has restarted. Italy to follow shortly even with a pan EU stimulus of 500 million dollars and solid job guarantees. Four weeks means a whole payroll cycle is lost. How many firms in Nigeria will be able to continue in business without mass retrenchment. Will their workers form part of the poor, eligible for bailouts.... |
He proposes an alternative economic blueprint he says 'to get Nigeria to work in the pandemic'. I guess this is the only sliver of light at the end of the tunnel. How long it will take the ministers to come up with one and how qualitative it will be to address the impending implosion of Nigeria is left to be seen. In my honest opinion too much is left to the NCDC. They should not dictate the pace or determine the strategy of overcoming the pandemic. There should be an umpire outside the system to set targets and demand performance. As far as the NCDC is concerned they can take all the time in the world to overcome this. Time which this country cannot afford. |
Another two week extension confirmed. 'This is not a joke he says...' Mr. President. No one is joking. Serious problems are coming. |
Says we have a 1,500 per day testing cap..... hmmm this is serious. Very disheartening. |
Hmmm... haven't watched local stations in a long while. Watching 'Channels Tv' right now. |
