I have nothing new to say about this pandemic. My position has been clear since January about the virus and about the pandemic. But when you have the number one citizen, the pre-eminent personality of the country potentially contacting this disease when the known cases in the country have barely reached 50, that is 0.000025 percent of the population... ...you can only wonder at how reckless, careless, ignorant, unprepared, ill-informed and totally inept this goverment is that cannot even ensure or guarantee the bio-security of its head for a month of this virus entering the country. It is just scandalous. What kind of message does this send. What kind of inspiration does this deliver to a traumatised citizenry. What the hell is happening to this Presidency... this so called goverment.that cannot even take care of itself. |
Leezah:Of course not. From what economic activities. Even enterprises with large cash reserves will rather layoff disposable staff simply because in a pandemic regime NOBODY KNOWS WHEN THE SITUATION WILL NORMALISE. Hubei, China began to lift restrictions and open up businesses gradually after two months in lockdown and boom, new infections that were zero for about a week suddenly erupted. No one knows when this thing will end. No one will know whether his personal savings or corporate reserves can outlast the pandemic except you work in goverment, an organisation that can endlessly and shamelessly borrow till eternity to pay salaries and dodgy benefits. |
RisenPhoenix:We were shouting lock borders, lock borders after the Italian came in. No way. They left it open till yesterday. For what gain I don't understand. Okay Nigerians should be allowed back into their country. No problem but why not quarantine them for the mandatory 14 days in a goverment controlled facilitity like China does. What the hell is self isolation. Who can be trusted to do that. Looking back, was is not easier to have quarantined 5,000 people coming into Nigeria since January than shutting down 180 million people which is inevitable....and someone will rather have me blame Nigerians today and exonorate the goverment who is supposed to be 'organising society'. |
No one is even talking about crime. Shut downs will cause hunger, hunger will cause crime. The police will be ordered to cut down on arrests and the courts are going off line. Can this slow goverment come out with a policy statement as to how public safety will be handled in the worst case scenario around this pandemic. |
RisenPhoenix:Good morning. Check my posts as far back as Febuary. It is not about 'common cold'. When hunger hits people after staying in isolation for 6 months people will vote to go out to work, kiss the virus and die trying. Let them bring out all the police and armed forces for mayhem is being stoked. We have nit seen anything yet. Nigeria CANNOT BE LOCKED DOWN AND SO THIS VIRUS CANNOT BE CONTROLLED. IT IS LATE. |
Reactionary goverment. Always on the defensive. You started in 2015 by calling all critics wailers but by that psyche closed your ears to social signals, deadened your senses to the real condition of the country and in listening to the few hailers alone turned off all the alarms that guarantees the safety of the citizenry. This is the result. Enjoy your country. A goverment that does not listen and is not responsive cannot succeed. |
No need for this. Nigeria cannot be locked down. The country simply doesn't have the resources to halt all activities for any considerable length of time. Anyway no country has stopped the availability of essential commodities of which food is prime. No even China or Italy. |
So what happens to the chain gangs....remand or release? ....society slowly imploding... .... pandemic blues... |
Its a Nigerian thing. The inability to obey instructions. The Church expects the police to force them before compliance. |
makydebbie:Noticed that too. Unfortunately housewife is the only vocation in marraige that comes that early. And since she maybe pregnant already I can definetely see at least half a dozen children and a complete waste of a lifetime. |
quentin06:So for how long do you think AccessBank will continue to pay them without making money?.... if this results in a paralysis of the country for weeks... months.... I've heard of mandatory cash reserves for bad loans but pally..... I have not heard about cash reserves for 'Workers Salaries: Covid-19 Act of God' in any country. Those workers may consider keeping the cash they were planning to use in getting their 'Box Sets' if they are wise. Nothing right now is sure. |
Just fed up. Was it not last week, a few days ago that it was reported Nigeria was tracking 130 people. I said then that by this week they will be tracking 1,300 and shortly it will be 130,000 people to be tracked and the geometrics will continue until Nigeria completely runs out of money... You just donot start what you are not sure of finishing. The lockdown of Lagos is now only a matter of time. Serious economic crises is here. |
This sh#t is getting more serious day by day. These are the kinda day to day activities Nairalanders need to be careful about. These are the people majority come in close contacts with as they go about their daily businesses, especially in Lagos. And we still have more of such people listed above (agberos and even your cashier at the bank or that person you address as chairman or madam!) going on their daily business, most of them do not even know they have this virus! What we all need is to be very very careful of our surroundings and staying at home will protect you from the virus more than 90% That should be adhere to. Listen to the FG and your state government to keep your self, family and country safe. No pandemic in the history of the world has been like this Coronavirus issue : CNN
Your much hailed President is directly responsible for this. I hope you now come to terms with the fact that he neither has the speed of thought nor the depth of understanding that dynamic leadership requires especially in a crises. Anyone can appear to perform when the going is good and the sun shines. Real leadership comes with winter. Sentiment at the polls has now worn a life or death mask. On his watch thousands of people are going to die in Nigeria from this virus needlessly. We had months to prepare, months to insulate and isolate ourselves. We had 'worked examples' of nations that succeeded and others that failed. What else did Mr. President need. |
Once again. An ignorant citizenry cannot expect a better life experience and a progressive society. It just cannot happen. Reading most posts before you come to the conclusion that those on strike are grade school teachers because 'schools' are closed down...or just civil servants who are asked to work from home. But in other countries you speak of these people as the sum of the intellectual capacity of the nation, a group of diverse expertise that is sorely and badly needed at a time when such a nation is faced with grave danger of scientific origins. Ignorant citizens I hail thee. But those at the forefront of the battle against this pandemic are not the airforce, army or navy, but virologists, community health experts, statisticians, economists, ent surgeons.... at least those are the folks who I see in America, the UK, Italy and China. None of those countries have the pool of their egg heads in an administrative brawl with goverment with the citizens cheering from the stands and then being led into life or death germ warfare by goverment officials who are largely illiterate as seen by their antecedents and actions so far. As some will say indeed, 'who did this to us'. What is just the matter with this country. Please everyone above just sit back for a minute and reason this matter carefully. There are no foreign experts to save us from this one. Every country is stretched. Every country will sink or swim by its own intelligence. If the pool of ours is at war with their own country then collectively Nigeria is fighting this pandemic with one hand tied behind its back. I appeal to ASUU to get back to work on a humanitarian basis and place a moratorium on its industrial action till this pandemic is resolved one way or the other. Please. |
See everyone yakking away. Folks that have forfeited their lives since the end of January. Indolent citizens will die like fowls in a poultry because they cannot get their govermments to act. Good luck tp you all. Long done saying anything about prevention. We are in the response and survival mode and thanks to our folks up there in Canada chemotherapy results are coming through and they look promising. Not interested abput the spread anymore. In a few days I will be ready to handle it head on. |
The Judiciary in the United Kingdom is shutting down slowly, cases being adjourned, minor cases cancelled completely. Prisons in some countries are letting out criminals. Very soon the criminal justice system around the world will be in jeopardy. First stage of total anarchy. Folks, it is not about the 'flu' aka, common cough and catarrh. It is about the social impact of what is called a pandemic. The complete debilitation of society. This is the simple reason why we screamed to high beavens that borders should have been closed by the end of January. The borders remain open till this morning. The first of my foreign business partners has called this morning on the effects of the pandemic in Nigeria. And my reply to his concern was simple. Nigeria simply does not have the structure to shut down the country. Nigeria is a country with the overwhelming population either unemployed or informally engaged economically. If the bulk of society is not formally recognised by government then goverment simply cannot stabilise the country if it puts in place any form of restrictions for the period ot will take to control the pandemic. We are in a catch 22 situation. To beat Covid-19 you have to stop the heart of and then revive her again when the virus is dead. If you have no kit to resuscitate a heart it is pointless trying to stop it no matter the case for surgery. The Nigerian goverment is basically insolvent and even if it had the resources it doesn't know who the average citizen is and does not have the capacity to reach them in any meaningful palliative way. This is why prevention was always better than the cure. WE SHOULD HAVE ACTED TO PREVENT THIS WHEN WE HAD THE TIME. Now let me see how this goverment intends to shut Nigeria down for the weeks and months it will take to kill this virus off. |
I told you folks the hastle about Covid-19 was not about the virus... no worse than the common cold or allergies we all get at some time in our lives. The problem about Covid-19 is that it has caused a pandemic. And pandemics have a way of reordering the world in the most unexpected ways. The first mass casualty of the pandemic is the world economy. Whether each individual person gets the virus or not is not the point. The point is that everyone will end up in a worse economic position than before this problem started. From industrialists, professionals, performing artists, sportsmen and women, everybody will be hit and hit hard. |
And who gets the funding...Chinese, German and other multinationals. Very little impact on the employment market, very great chance of capital flight, very certain pressure on the naira. In the rest of the world goverment is redeploying its resources towards mitigating the risks of corona, every other unnecessary expenditure is suspended. We should suspend non critical capital expenditure. Roads at this point are not critical infrastructure, hospitals and medicare facilities are. Once again Nigeria is led by special interests. Dull, slow goverment. Forget roads for now, roads may soon be closed. Build hospitals and crematoriums for now. |
Meritocracy:Ignorant man. 27 dollars is how much is paid for the oil. Production cost: How much it costs to get it from 5,000ft underground into an oil tanker, is above 20 dollars in Nigeria. I don't think this country is presently making a profit on its oil exports just turnover. And we know what happend when you chop your capital. |
Covid pandemic restructuring is inevitable since political restructuring is unacceptable. |
unity004:Those are not even the masks that work. Not better than holding a tissue paper to your nose. The minimum PPE Face Mask is the N-95. |
Just disgusted at this failed goverment. Slow, ignorant, selfish, incompetent and grossly dishonest. |
blowjohn:Those in retail, market men and women, on the streets, in construction and engineering, offering location based services, transporters, restauranteers, etc, the bulk of Nigerians... how do they work from home... Hope they have enough policemen to handle crime and enough prisons to warehouse criminals. Lockdown maybe the only way to kill the pandemic but it may kill the country with it. Is Nigeria as a country resilient? |
Iyiataata92:Too bad. We lost the opportunity to block this thing until viable therapy is ready and a vaccine down the line. Now a total lockdiwn of the country is inevitable. Does the goverment have the money to feed most of Nigeria for a day thoughtless of weeks or months when they know the productive population is less than half and those in formal employment, those who can 'work from home' are miniscule. What about the army of self employed. Who will feed them if they are under a mandatory quarantine like in Wuhan, like in Northern Italy. Will the loss of income on a massive scale not lead to wanton crime. What is the goverments policy towards this. Just watching a documentary on the BBC World Service and what is clear is this: To defeat the virus like China did you have to act like China did. TOTAL LOCKDOWN. Is Nigeria ready for a total lockdown. Do we have the resources as a nation and the capacity as a people to keep society functional, crime free... Goverment that knows the answer has tested fate by not acting on time. Results worldwide has shown you cannot defeat this pandemic, you cannot perform socio-medical surgery without stopping the heartbeat of the nation. Whether we will awake from the self induced coma is left to contemplate. |
OlujobaSamuel:You ignored the second part, liberalisation. Just like what is happening with power, it is controlled by a few who are not in competition. That is why. Essential commodities of which fuel is a part must be pure market driven enterprises to extract the full benefits. No matter how much deregulated the carrot market is, if you cannot get as many people cultivating and selling carrots prices will remain under control. The more people that produce carrots the lesser the tendency for them to meet and agree on how much carrots should cost. And to get a lot of people interested in cultivatung carrots you have to deregulate the carrot market to attract them in the first place, Deregulate simply means removing the lid and the base of the profit container, no limits. |
Address the specific issues of violence by calling the police on her behalf and informing other authorities that deal with gender based violence. As for the marraige it is highly unwise to get involved in its termination since in all probability you were not instrumental in its formation. Third party involvement in marraiges never, ever ends well. Leave it at the specifics of the violence you witness. Donot take life decisions for adults. |
dwizzed:They have defeated it and dropped out of the headlines. Good for them but they should be humble and circumspect. They started it in the first place with their disrespect for the environment and bio diversity. |
Indeed. They will have old stock for the next ten years. Criminals. This is where deregulation works. You get swift response both ways simply due to competition. Goverment should not only deregulate but liberalise the petroleum industry. |
So sorry for your loss Mr. Bruce. May you find solace in the fond memories you had together. |
gozzlin:Lifetime of black coffee, smokes and pizza. This is exactly what I was saying a couple of weeks ago. When the pandamic hits top form the cemeteries of the world will be filled in no time. Cremation will happen on an industrial scale. Coffin makers will be sorely disappointed. There is no prosperity in a pandemic. Everyone suffers. Nigeria should have shut down much earlier. In the United States prisoners are being released from jail to combat the plague. Imagine that, felons back in society. That is pandemic 101 for you. It is not about the virus. Flu can come and go within a week. The problem is numbers. The sheer numbers that can get infected all at once thus completely debilitating vast ecosystems of government, industry, enterprise, etc, that can bring families, communities and whole countries into submission. |
Nice. Tracking 1,300 today. In a week they will be tracking 130,000. In a month tracking 13 million...and then we will understand what a pandemic is all about when goverment runs out of money chasing this virus. Then they will see their grave folly in not shutting down earlier. The whole of Europe is gripped by a blame cycle. Wishing they had acted earlier. Slow nation. God gave us a 2 month headstart and plenty 'worked examples' of failings in Iran and Korea and successes in Singapore and Hongkong. Still came up with a D minus. |
