Myjust:April?.... C'mon read about vaccine production. Trials are part of the manufacturing process and they take time, a long time even if the results of the trials are good which is uncertain. Remember most viruses are moving targets. They constantly evolve to thrive in their hosts. That is the reason the common flu shot is one of the most ineffective vaccines. Corona viruses are highly adaptible. The earliest I have heard a vaccine may be ready is 12 months. More like 18 months and this with loose certification. |
How do you stop self help, lynching and extra judicial murder when the criminal justice system is broken and dysfunctional. |
Put the paper on the bin. Trash the idea of loans. End the control of special interests on the economy. |
Successlane:Then go into hibernation because the government courtesy of this pandemic is sitting a tough examination and its grades so far are poor. For your information if you bother to observe international news all governments in the world are being criticised harshly by their citizens on their various responses. Governments that are doing a lot better than ours. When things are rosy you never know the competencies of persons, peoples and societies. It is difficulties that bring out the best and worst of people. I hope after this challenge has blown over the propaganda surrounding this President and government can be laid to rest. |
Sensible. There are precedents. A certain church in South Korea became the epicentre of an explosion of the virus in January disobeying a quaratine regime and the propreietor was promptly arrested and charged for man slaughter I think. This order will transfer the liability to the religious community that is traditionally loosely subjected to government intervention. |
The problem has never been about the virus. On average the challenges are simply flu like, completely manageable. Flu is generally benign, mortality is low. The problem is with the word 'PANDEMIC'. The debilitation of society by masses of people getting sick: AT THE SAME TIME. This can cripple a family, cripple a community, cripple an industry, cripple authority, cripple government and cripple a whole country. If everyone in a family goes down at the same time for example who goes to work to earn an income to pay the bills where there is no social safety net. When individuals and groups are taken out of the equation of productivity, of social safety, of industry, of goverment in such numbers then society is in peril. Remember there are policemen that have to continue patrolling, there are soldiers that must continue defending, there are prison wardens that simply cannot afford to go down ill in numbers. There are oil production platforms that must continue to work despite the fact that workers there are in close proximity, specialist workers that cannot easily be replaced at short notice. Same for power, same for energy. It is concerning. That is why governments throughout the world do everything to prevent Pandemics and when they fail battle hard to 'flatten the curve', slow the rate of i fecrion so that the conveyor belt of cases is manageabke, not on the hospital side alone but more on the society side. |
See what I say. Voluntary quarantine does not work. Nigerians are not honest enough to make unsupervised sacrifices where the fate of their neighbour is at stake. You either make it mandatory in a goverment controlled facility or close the borders completely. We are paying the price for our collective ignorance and incompetence. Two weeks in Ibadan...wow. That is anything from ten to a hundred people exposed. Oh well... |
hisexcellency34:Honestly the Federal Goverment acts as if it does not exist. Every country that I know with virus cases has been addressed by their President's multiple times first on the pandemic itself, then on governance and then on the economic fallout. It is highly disappointing that our goverment is so overwhelmed by this matter. |
This is a proper governor in charge of a proper goverment. Intelligent, pro active and will definitely succeed. Doing all the right things in good time, cutting costs and boosting earnings. |
Another set of slow people. This meeting should have happened at the end of January immediately Wuhan began a lockdown. That is when I started warning about the economic consequencea of a potential pandemic. Just too slow in this country. Our so called intellectuals and experts are just glorified sunday soccer pundits. What the hell is the Nigeria Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies for. Why can't they ever forcast grave national challenges and profer solutions to the govermemt that gives them so much money. |
He should get lost and focus on his country's poor who are eating bats and rodents for food. That's where the problem started and that is where it will end. If we had a competent goverment in place this pandemic will have meant nothing to Nigeria. |
We have be screaming our heads off for weeks. Appears the horse has bolted. Good luck to Nigeria. A nation that will watch a crack in the pavement, grow into a pothole and only take action when it becomes a killer gully. |
Fantastic news. Awake at last. Good start. |
brainhgeek:I once supported the theory of herd immuninity. Not sure anymore. The long term effects of this virus are yet unknown. A lot of recovered folks still complain of lingering symptoms though with minimal viral loads. |
But what is wrong with people. Why the non esssential travel?. Do people not read the news? At 70 you should be hunkered down not roaming all about exposing yourself to danger. Then you come into a country whose goverment is not prepared and with a citizenry that is largely not informed. It is suicide. Please anyone out there thinking of unnecessary travel to Nigeria, just stop and reconsider. This country is not ready in the least. You can spare yourself a whole lot of problems. Just stay put in climes that at least know what they are doing. |
[quote author=9jatriot post=87542483]Raining season is a few weeks away, will this theory still hold water when it starts? If this thing does not end soon, it will be bad o. [/quote/ Rainy season is our own flu virus season. June, July, August, depending on where you are in the country is where the pollen count stratospheres. I never like that period. In the South by September/October the air is so heavy with humidity clothes don't dry in open air for days and mould forms in houses without air conditioning. Virus paradise. |
Silly boss. He is more concerned about discrimination than the jeopardy to public health his stupid inactions caused. He supposedly is literate, sees the news everyday and knew the person was coming from a nation already is the grip of the pandemic, a country that is already shutting down. Why didn't he order the person to self quarantine in line with government directives. This is why I say government just has to change its strategy if it has any. The Nigerian that cannot obey a simple traffic light will not obey a complex self quarantine regime. It has to be made mandatory the way it is done in China, a cou try that has experience of what this pandemic can do to a country. In China all quarantines are done in government establishments to ensure probity. If our government cannot take the sensible decision of suspending visas and closing borders to all but a few countries with zero cases then it should declare a state of emergency in all international gateway states of Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Portharcourt and commandeer all hotels and medical facilities within proximity of those city airports for mandatory quarantines. It may not be for as long as 14 days but no one should be allowed to walk straight into society and decide by him or her self whether he or she is a threat to society. That is just idiotic. The government should step in and quarantine the entire staff of that company and decide by itself when their premises and operarions can resume, not them. Nigerians are not their brothers keeper. They cannot be trusted to do what is right. Goverment must be more assertive. If this thing hits the core of society and it begins to empty out police stations and debilitate prison wardens and grounds soldiers then we wil take it seriously. Let us do what is right WHEN WE STILL HAVE TIME TO. |
Every other President in countries with cases have made not one, not two national broadcasts to assure the public, inform the citizens and answer general questions on the pandemic and the consequent economics. Not ours. Once again. Poor leadership coming through. It is when faced with challenges you will know those who are prepared and competent to call themselves leaders. Just disappointing from the Buhari led goverment. GEJ bad, GEJ clueless. It was not as poor as this. President Buhari you are the leader of this country. Let your people see you, hear you and ask you questions about their lives which is at stake for goodness sake. |
sexylassie2:Please don't misinform people. Cargo flights are going on ans seaports remain open all over the world even to.those countries that have shut their borders. Passenger travel is not necessary to import or export essential commodities. Our oil continues to go out everyday. That is not sanctioned by any country. The lines of trade are established so there is no need for human interventions except when things go wrong. |
Ghostmode2two:I have been shooting guns since I was eleven. Believe me the selector lever of a faultless rifle moves under less force than a typical door lever which a 3 year old can easily open. The force to pull a trigger will pull a child's bicycle easily. The only action I know that will be near impossible for a three year old will be to cock guns if almost any size. That is to load a round from the magazine into the barrel or firing chamber. In a rifle the spring tension for calibres of 7.62mm and above can be done by an 8 year old, 9mm spring loads can be done by a 5 year old and revolvers can be cocked with even less force. Guns are dangerous, period. It doesn't take much to diacharge them. |
Nigerians are up on arms at this incident and against the parents, rightly so, yet tolerate their Nigerian counterparts that weaponise their children in the name of cultism, unleashing mayhem not only on themselves but society. And when asked to account feign ignorance and plead non responaibility. What is the difference between a 3 year old's accidental shooting and a teenager slaughtering a colleague with a machete. Parents failing everywhere you look and the world must sit up and begin to hold them culpable. |
Ghostmode2two:Talk as if disengaging the safety on a typical weapon is entering a complex keycode. It is usually a gear lever that is even softer touch than the actual trigger. |
Said enough. |
tot:Lagos 2020, London 1666, abeg what is the difference. What makes nations different, the buildings, roads, cars, etc...or the people and the way they live, the way their society is organised... I am certain the life expectancy of a Londoner in 1666 and a Lagosian in 2020 are similar. |
Said enough. We will get it full blast. While the world will be recovering both medically and economically we and much of Africa will just be getting started then we will know what it means to be a pariah state. It is either we get it at the same time as most of the world or we don't get it at all. In a global pandemic regime timing is everything. |
I hate name dropping. My philosophy has always been about the structure rather than the individuals that command it. There is no driver no matter how skillful or competent that can take me from Nigeria to the Americas simply because no automobile can cross the Atlantic. It will take the structure of an ocean going vessel or aircraft to do that...and just a decent pilot or captain, nothing special. So Sanusi and Buhari and all the lofty names dropped before including my favourite Peter Obi can ultimately not succeed to develop Nigeria or move her forward objectively in this structure we operate. It will take the people to cast aside sentiment to order for a change of structure to succeed then any decent candidate will do wonders in a very short period of time. The horse just cannot be forced to drink even if you use hydraulic power to drive its head into the river. Anyway for academic purposes Sanusi by his antecedents looks like a shinning light coming from the courts of the north. He is progressive, intelligent and most of all believable by the forces of the status quo. Today the two biggest challenges of government are the economy and security. On the former he has more experience and competemce than the incumbent, on the latter he has spoken out several times about the fuel that fans the flames of crime throughout vast parts of Nigeria. It maybe time we had intellect back in the affairs of government. |
AroleOduduwa2:You can jail a swindler for relieving a victim of his senses but if given out of greed society will not spare the victim. If Nigerians are swindled by this drama they don't deserve a better experience. |
mvem:The problem is not the mortality, it is the rapidity of the spread. Sick people simply cannot work. Imagine all your soldiers ill, all your police ill, all your prison warders ill, all your doctors ill, in Nigeria all your oil production workers ill, all your energy workers ill. Governance and the organisation of society will simply collapse. The cost of economic living will simply escalate beyond what people can cope with. The virus is not the problem. It is the societal effects that is. That is what is called a pandemic. |
Slow government. Theey are waiting to be hit by a bus before acting to close all borders. They fail to realise that being behind the infection curve will leave Nigeria in the lurch when eventually other countries recover and we have not. Case in question is China which is recovering and is now barring other country's citizens from coming. Africa may as well become the hotspot down the line and it is then we will feel the whole weight of the discriminatory world. We either have the pandemic now that other countries have it or we avoid it totally. Our actions feel as if we are welcoming it with open arms, even daring it to come with a kind of pomposity I just cannot understand. Folks it is a mistake. When you get the pandemic is a more important economic question than how many are affected. I predicted the economic consequence of this pandemic almost a month ago when folks hadn't even heard of the viral outbreak. Throughout the world the battle against this pandemic has been entirely an economic one. One of capacity and resources to fight it. Northern Italy will run out of money by March end. That is the 9th largest economy in the world with a population not even in the top thirty. How will Nigeria cope. An economy that was already bankrupt yet we are waiting for the virus to come before taking action. Nigeria should close all its borders now and begin to restrict unnecessary movement and public gatherings while there is time. Let us as a nation not be amongst the last countries to be infected so that we will not be amongst the last to recover. That will be a triple tragedy. |
Just close the borders. Global International trade has collapsed, global tourism collapsed. What are people still doing roaming across borders threatening other countries. The Nigerian authorities are grossly underestimating the speed of this pandemic and virility of its spread. If it hits home there will be no way to control it. It will overwhelm this country in weeks. |
Can you see why it is not good to rush into things. Had we taken the loan already is it from the 30 dollar a barrel oil we will be servicing 22 billion dollars. A tragedy will have become a calamity. To do what with it.... digitalize NTA et al. Can we now see that is not a priority for this country and a lot of things on that shopping list. Now that we can no longer rely on the international community for investment, loans or trade good leadership will turn inwards to inspire the nation to be self sufficient, to build its roads, bridges, rail lines, hospitals and schools by itself...by sacrifice and patriotism. But how can our present leaders inspire us when they are exactly the opposite of what they would and should preach. Selfish, wasteful, corrupt and having next to zero credibility. |
They should go to court to enforce their rights. It is the court process that will produce evidence on both sides, witnesses, CCTV footage, etc to prove or disprove the assertion. Sentiments are just wrong. I just hope our government has got it right here and are not just reacting to sentiments. We have had Chinese restaurants operaring in the country virtually since independence. I have been attending these restaurants since I was a child with no problems whatsoever. I cannot understand where this angst against the Chinese food retail industry is coming from. |
