So glad some primary contacts are out of quarantine but they themselves should remain vigilant and honestly report any physiological changes they observe going forward no matter how insignificant. And they have to detail exactly what transpired in the 72 hour Sawyer saga so that other medical facilities nationwide could be better informed. |
When we sit together as Nigerians and wonder why we have so many problems that we cannot appear to overcome except resort to prejudice and lately violence then know this, it is because we fail to discourse. And I will always say it. Violence in whatever form in whatever setting is inevitable where dialogue fails or is absent. Both upper and lower house straddle the political divide and are occupied by members even of his own party. What are they doing to answer the Nigerian question and why can't they be coerced into the ring. |
Ide4u: Human rights activist and lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has restated that the ongoing national conference is a waste of time and public resources.Yes oga critic. But what is your solution to the Nigerian question beyond your crabs in a barrel mentality. |
ojinku: Imagine that I went to an NDDC office yesterday (government office), there was no water to flush the toilet after urinating let alone to wash my hands in the wash-hand basin. In fact, it's like I was seeing MR EBOH physically there. With their multi-billion dollar budget. Is that not enough proof that money does not buy civilisation. Is it not a sign that the black man has serious issues. |
9jatatafo: Nigeria is a country built on faulty foundation. We breath the air of corruption. As deadly as EVD is, we still play politics with it. Until we the common citizens start dying like flies and EVD is out of control then govt officials will be serious. We are just too money conscious in this country. What use is money when we are sick and dying? Imagine a doctor wasting in IDH and no one is concerned? I don't blame the other doctors that are avoiding the EVD victims. Nigeria is a sorry nation.Faulty foundation?? Have I not been lamenting this for years ....are people listening?? Perhaps the silver lining of this epidemic is what I call the 'formation of a nation'. The kind of experiences that the world wars caused to the advancemement of America, Europe and parts of Asia. Maybe ebola as an arch enemy will unite us, refocus us away from our money centred, vain and selfish lives to a more egalitarian society. They say grave conflict reboots the memory and elevates the thinking and that suffering is a tonic for the soul. |
ukukaegbu: Little wonder that nurse ran away to Enugu from that placeRan to Enugu to do what. What kind of post is this. Do we think ebola is a tea party. IT HAS NO CURE. The vast majority of viruses donot. The only treatment is to boost your immume system, prevent long term damage and fight secondary - bacterial infection so the number of drugs you can administer is very limited. That's why I continue to repeat that we cannot afford to underestimate the destructive capabilities of this virus. I mean the US CDC continues to insist that prevention is the best way to end this epidemic. That in itself is a damning response to friends and families but acknowledges the fact that only one out of ten victims survives. To this end our government has done relatively well to contain it. I am really sorry for the families who may have to watch their loved ones die a horrible, terrible death without being able to do anything physical for them but this is not the time to get emotional about it and take unnecessary risk. Stay clear of that place and let those who are prepared to take the risk and sacrifice their lives do their jobs. Ebola doesn't care whether you are a government official or not. |
Nigerians and backyard-junk-storage mentality. When you build something with so much value and promise and cannot carry it any further, just do the simple, sell.....at the peak of its value, in this case, popularity. In advanced societies that is what all web based enterprises do. They either sell to those who can advance it or float it to bring in those who can advance it. Nigerian based businesses must think beyond the I/me confines and view ideas as sacred, inspiration as trans-generational so that we can be unshackled from mediocrity. Seun for one appears to have hit the right keys, why not partner, share the enterprise with him. Same sad story afflicted our once promising home grown rival to DSTV. They prefer to see it die than let it slip through their cold, dying hands.......pity. |
bushdoc9919: None of the athletes were sick....so why the quarantine. No sir, normal reaction to something you donot fully understand, that is extreme caution. We should return home and fix our public health problems quickly to assure the world that we are truly on top of the situation. We donot have to become a Liberia or Serria Leone before we act decisively. Nations Cup, FIFA age grade tourneys are coming up. There is so much at stake. |
duni04: Bros these things are not stringent. Ebola itself as a disease has not been fully understood. Its exact mode of transmission and life cycle are still understudy. To say its mode of transmission is difficult sounds naive as ebola is about the easiest disease to transfer to someone else. You get ebola not just by contact with a carrier, but also contact with things a carrier has already touched. People are mistaking the body fluids contact to mean contact with blood, it way easier than that.Don't mind them. Let them continue to underplay it. The foremost ebola specialist of Sierra Leone is dead. Shey we know more than him or are more prepared or kitted. The virus (at least this strain) is not fully understood, how we are so definitive about it bemuses me. They talk as if the Sawyer fellow was hugging, kissing and shagging everyone he met and infected. The hospital management and government has not deemed it fit to chronicle the details of Mr. Sawyers treatment and the activities of all those who treated him minute by minute because they too are of the rigid mindset that they must ALL have been in contact with his body fluids when we know most healthcare personel routinely avoid contact with bodily fluids ever since the HIV epidemic started. Have you ever seen a nurse administer treatment without sanitary gloves or a doctor investigate without a sanitary mask and gown. Men, abeg heads up oh. |
aceman: The report said that she evaded quarantine. We don't need to blame the FG as a habit, even when facts show that they are making a very good effort . If you must play the blame game, you MAY blame the nurse, but she is only human and irrational like many.Another down player....okay its not anybody's fault, it is okay to disobey rules..... Its okay not to account for your patients.....its okay to place other considerations above public health....its okay, its okay....the virus will just go away....hmmm....just tired... |
oyb: Throw in the irresponsibility of Nigerians and we are in big trouble. Sawyers driver must have seen everything in the media, yet he did not turn himself in. Several people interacted with sawyer and they are aware of this, but rather than seek Carr, they choose to hide in hopes of not my portionMy dear you just reflect my thinking and anger. There is so much information out there yet dishonesty, disobedience and conceitedness will rather govern our individual actions. The taxi driver will look at the quarantine period through the lens of income loss rather than a battle of life and death. The typical Nigerian behaviour is a natural ally of the virus. Why would a right thinking person under lock down visit his family members....to kill them all... ![]() |
buJu234: Pls stop being scared for nothing. She would have been only able to infect others only on the ground that she is sick and deadOh yeah. And neither did Mr. Sawyer 'look sick' when he boarded that flight to Lagos if not the stewards will have noticed and called for a doctor in flight or reported a 'suspected case' to our authorities when he landed as a suspected case coming from an ebola hit country. Where have I heard 'the sickness no dey show for face'.....oh it concerns HIV.....and I thought the 'V' in HIV stands for virus not visitor that rings the door bell and agrees to come back at a later time or date if you don't answer. Some people will show symptoms with a low viral load, others will look normal with a virus racked body, our physiologies differ, our immune systems differ, so are our bodies abilities to resist and fight off the virus so how can anyone say for sure that until you are vomiting and stooling you cannot transmit. That is just ridiculous. |
rdokoye: Those doctors are constantly administering highly contagious individuals, so the likelihood of them contracting the virus is heighten.Perhaps I am the wrong profession then. In my profession risk is analysed very carefully and systems are designed to contain or accomodate the maximum possible outcomes or 'worst case scenario'. In virology or public health it appears threats are analysed on the least possible outcomes. Goodluck to you guys. We don't say 'what may happen' or 'what is likely to happen', we say 'what is the worst thing that can happen' and plan around to handle that. |
rdokoye: If she was well enough to travel to Enugu and back to Lagos again, it’s extremely unlikely that she infected anyone there with Ebola, since it can only be transferred when an individual becomes sick. That’s why, up until this day, the only confirmed cases are those who had direct contact with Mr Sawyer; WHILE HE WAS SICK.This is the kind of rubbish talk that has continued to kill people since March in The Guinea, Liberia and Serria Leone, under-estimating the sheer aggression of this virus. I say and I say again. No one is certain about how and when this disease is spread. Even experienced handlers in full bio gear have died. Wisdom is on the side of extreme caution, viruses do not have timers, they don't have calendars, they respect no one. You can transmit a typical virus minutes after 'catching' it. Until the science is complete I will treat ebola as virile as the influenza virus. It is either we do this or conceed the battle, simple. There is too much laxity everywhere concerning this epidemic. If it was domiciled in the Americas, Europe or Asia the WHO will have raised greater alarm, we should not test the resolve of this virus to do serious damage. |
gebest: is not her fault, she was missing her family.Sure.....so she went home to guarantee that they join her.....in the after life. |
And the 'crazy' nurse just had to go home to family after being warned not to under 'quarantine' and.....perhaps killed her whole family and more.....Nigerians. I know that our corrupt nature, dishonesty and inability to obey authority we so despise will be a strong ally to the killer virus. Pity. H |
Hmmm, an alcohol free world.......refreshing. |
arvinsloane: it wasn't a little contact. he escorted him to the hospital. that means he must have been holding and supporting the man to the hospital. that's maximum contact. Please be informed, this virus is very, very aggressive. Avoid any sort of unprotected contact whether 'little', 'brief', 'light' or any other terminology of complacency or you will simply die, period. As long as we cannot pin down the mode of transmission and have no antidote we should fall on the side of extreme caution. |
Nigeria has handled this crises very, very well so far, I'm impressed. Thanks to all the dedicated, hardworking personnel who have made outstanding sacrifices putting themselves in harms way. |
otokx: example of poverty.Correct....by the way has light been restored to UNIPORT.....and the surrounding Aluu community.... |
Bolt3: Am serious here, this is the only way I can know if the power situation has improved. It hasn't. There are still power stations lying idle without gas. Just passed by one. Pity. |
customized13: lolzzzz, its the nature of my job, I go for field inspection of billboards in those areas. You could be a millionaire if only the opposition could sniff out an opportunity here. |
maclatunji: This administration's tenure ends in May 2015 but the budget from Fashola for next year will cover January-December 2015, I do not speak for the Lagos State Government but ask anybody with reasonable knowledge of Lagos State, they will tell you that there are almost no new projects as the focus is to complete those that have been started. Will you be willing to accept your postulation in PDP governed states. Will you be willing to accept this from the government in the centre. Will you be willing to accept that Jonathan is rounding up or winding down ahead of 2015 and so cannot deliver. Will you be willing to lend an equitable hand and criticize all and sundry based on the kind of clear evidence you can see displayed without bias. Oya do the right thing. |
I expect the PDP to hammer the APC, ruling party on this. But they will not. The best they will do is trade failure cards between themselves and agree a Gaza like temporary cease fire that leaves the masses in a rubble heap. Pity. Where is the opposition PDP in Lagos....or in Abuja.....or in Aso Rock looking for bread crumbs. |
MissMeiya: Very funny. Insult Obama and Americans at every turn, but you still want us to give you our tax money and billion dollar research. Very funny. No one except for some lilylivered chickens is begging the US for anything. And don't try and fix Nigeria between your east - west spat with Putin because we have been for decades and still are - non aligned and unlike francophone Africa we are completely independent, colonial rule is only in history books....and we are not going back!!! |
The Nigerian military will not integrate with anyone neither will it change its TRADOC or concede its command and control so we are not part of that and don't need the funds. They should just let us be for now, period. When the needy call on us we will always respond at our terms and not those of the Piper. |
drauj: Now Jonathan deserves a thumb-up......I've said it times without number. If GEJ loses the election today he will congratulate the winner and move on. He has never been, never is and perhaps never will be an autocrat. Heck, he isn't even a blue blooded politician. He got there by providence and will step down with grace, dignity and an outstanding legacy when God deems his time in government is over. He has moved the democratic process further than any head of state before him, rebalanced the power equation in Nigeria and is tending several organisations of order into full blown and independent institutions. I sincerely hope the rest of us can sincerely help to ground these advances for our universal benefit. |
I'm so happy the election was adjudjed largely peaceful, free and fair and relieved the APC won quite rightly on the performance of the governor in his first term. I hope he sustains and improves on it. Those people who were apprehensive of the security arrangements and cast aspersions on government....where are your conspiracy theories. Let us see them again. |
Today in my service delivery 7 out of every 10 of my clients has a primary concern which is cost. I have lost clients due to my inability to 'tighten up'. Even those who started out as purist quality seekers are now value seekers. They take quality for granted because competition is tough. The only card which I play and which works for me forever in Nigeria is the integrity joker. As for survival I have to constantly look for cost savings, I have to work hard and of course the staff have to sacrifice as well. If the Chinese are to survive in Nigeria and undermine their more established Euro-American competitors, they will have to keep costs low. As an individual - graduate, trainee, professional, consultant, whatever my advice is: work hard, improve your competencies, 'moderate' your demands and maintain your integrity and dignity. You will succeed. Stop complaining. |
My friend this is how they built their country into what it is, low wages, competitive output that attracts real investment. You cannot build a new power station, pave 1000 kilometres of roads and build equivalent of the district of Garki, Abuja every week paying 'American Wages' while working 4 hours a day (as the average Nigerian does). That is the reality. In that part of the world they tie wages to output. That's why they have not had a recession in a generation. Nigeria and Nigerians need to sit down and study these people rather than berate them at every turn. Poster, while you may at first glance appear to have a case. Of course those wages will not support a man with lots of children and plenty of unemployed dependants but the truth is that the Chinese rather have ten people earning 50,000 than one earning 500,000 with nine dependants which is our feudalism model in Nigeria top to bottom. And personally in the real, real world I will rather hire a cheaper chinese hand than an expensive Nigerian hand, sentiments aside. Every body does it - from the phones we use, the tv's we watch to our agricultural equipment. We can only afford them because the Chinese are discounting. |
Varies from once to thrice daily depending on activity and access. |
Agent8706: But wait oh guys, there is a question I don't know if am the only one asking: I heard the virus can survive outside blood on any material up to a week and can be contracted by contact with the virus or its host. Now if nothing exchanges hand faster than currency notes, are you guys thinking what am thinking?Sure and I've told several people for days that the CBN may become the most active vector. My sympathies go to those who still abuse currency notes despite all warnings pressing it to their sweaty skins and tucking it into their privates. For the rest of us regular hand washing at every opportuned time throughout the day should help particularly if you are an active, outdoor person. Also cultivate the habit of making ATM calls the first or last chore of the day and not just before you tuck into that lunch hour sandwitch. |
