Stormtrooper11: Basically, ships and naval vessels in navies around the world, are classified by displacement/tonnage , armament, roles, length, endurance, etc. Each Navy has its on classification of vessels. The Nigerian navy is not an exception. While some will argue that the P18N is a corvette, but classified as an OPV in the Nigerian Navy, i would say, the P18N is the OPV variant of the Type 056 corvette. The P18N is an OPV, because: (1) it lacks the armament to be pronounced a corvette. (2) its role is one for an OPV i.e patrol of EEZ, anti-priacy, etc. (3)it lacks ASW, SAM, AAM capabilities. That's my few thoughts about this. Was NNS Aradu a frigate or destroyer then? |

jl115: OPVs can and do have longer endurance than corvettes, it's armament that dictates weather a ship is an OPV or corvette.
And the P18N is purely an OPV..... If it was "fitted for but not with" the offensive capabilities of a Corvette then I would've called it a Corvette however the P18N is a purpose built OPV, it can't be integrated with SS, ASW and AA without major refit This is false oga. Don't confuse my "blue water endurance" for endurance along the EEZ. http://defense-studies..com/2013/12/corvettes-and-opvs-offshore-investments.html?m=1 |
Foreign Affairs › Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by RiceProducers: 7:48am On Sep 22, 2021 |
jl115: they are OPVs... No anti sub, no anti air, no anti surface.... Purely a patrol vessel, and it's not like you could convert the P18N into a corvette either since the battle management system and ship architecture simply won't allow it unless a major refit is done which would cost so much one could just as well purchase a type 056 instead of going through the trouble. To you missiles make a corvette. I think it is blue water endurance. The battle management system you are talking about is software that can be installed and modified. The SS, ASW and AAs are modules that can be installed in a matter of weeks. |

nymphomaniac: This is a good read. Enough of Nigerian leaders painting utopian endgames for our currency. We either do something about it or face a further steep decline of the naira.
Painfully, Meffy knows all these things but instead, chose to chase ABOKIFX.
The only hope for our Naira is for the government to sit up(embrace good leadership and reduce import /encourage export, stop loan collection) cut off the rottening arm (revoke BDC licenses and embrace rate convergence) and cauterize the wound (continue the path of 1 and 2 above) before it becomes too late.
Meanwhile, what is today’s $ to N rate sef? This in Nigerianese you are speaking. Hot air going nowhere. Government is already reducing imports and encouraging exports. Why do we like 1+1=2. What's the new thing in this now? Stop loan collection - that's rubbish. The country has to grow. There are 170m young people. Revoke BDC licenses - done and undone many times, like ding dong. You have to dig into the figures. The offending products are: 1.Petrol and LPG 2. Vehicles 3. Rice, wheat and fish Have a strategy for each product. No. 1 - will go away in 2023 No. 2 - domicile assembly locally No. 3 - outright ban on importation |

youghs: 95% of ambushes or more will be squashed If the military adopt the use of tethered drones to provide constant surveillance for troops during movement. It's just that the vehicles will not be able to move more than 48km/hr.
https://elistair.com/ A system like this will change the game and they are not really expensive. Yes. This can work and it is less than $200k. 48km/hr is a decent speed for advancing in a COIN war. Tethered drones can also assist with AARs and implementation of improvements.. even training |

kabe1: Wait..... What?
DE Subs are perfect for countries with a military posture as China. No expected to fight far from home port.
DE Sub's are more quiet than Nuclear powered subs.
What Nuclear power provides you is more energy output to run your systems & range.
Cruisers are ships of a by-gone age. Even small 62m Corvettes like the Buyan can hit targets over 3000km away.
Most countries, big countries depend on Frigates & Destroyers while Corvettes make the largest numbers of their fighting fleet. Look at China & Russia.
Even the US is now building Frigates case in point is FFGx which Fincantieri recently won.
Man!!! China is challenging in the South China sea. They would have to keep submarines at sea for long or compensate with large numbers. Cruisers can do a whole lot and it is only when we talk about "carrier groups" that you begin to understand what power projection is about. A carrier group can cripple the entire offensive forces of a moderately powerful country especially in this age of AI powered electronic warfare |

kabe1: China has a bigger Naval fleet than America. Nope. Nuclear submarines don't need refueling for months. No serious world power depends on diesel submarines and has no cruisers. One US cruiser can take out a country's airforce by launching cruise missiles from over 200km away. They can jam comms or worse sow confusion in your C3I infrastructure. |

generalwo: I don't even know where to start from.... Countries are acquiring stealth fighters and strategic bombers, Nigerian military is putting super tucano on the news...... Recently, Australia signed a deal to acquire nuclear powered submarines, Nigeria is celebrating super tucano? So we can't defend ourselves if an advanced country decides to wage war against us? So it will be total annihilation if a country like Russia decides to trample on Nigeria? Because I don't see how a super tucano plane can withstand even the power of a MQ9 REAPER drone armed with hell fire missiles talkeless of a plane like the f35 or the b29...... Who do this country like this na? What will these planes do against modern fighter jets or is the Nigerian military buying these weapons JUST to fight bandits and herdsmen alone? If there is need to defend ourselves against external threats, is this what we will use? Tucano planes? Oh God.... Why did you allow my country to sink this deep? Even as bad as Pakistan and Afghanistan and even Iran and Iraq, Nigeria can't stand them in a full blown war....... So what are we called a country for? Only to kill unarmed civilians and loot billions of naira meant for the development of the masses..... Damn! You have started with this ignorant nonsense. Every redundant point you made here has been made and debunked. Nigeria is also buying air superiority aircraft for external defence. Stop throwing about aircraft names like a rank amateur. |

This is so outdated thinking.
It is Nigerians' great delusion the belief that only sketchy 'economics knowledge' and 'business experience' qualifies someone for the office of President.
It is the nonsense that came from OBJ regime and its western world / international bankers backers. It is stupid and has distorted our economy.
A government is just that. It is governing a state, securing its borders, administering laws, collecting taxes and keeping a long view of the future especially of the youth.
It is not managing short term cash flow which is the main focus of business.
Putting these "business people" in government is just creating problems. The large numbers of poor people we have now was caused by their large business friendly policies to the detriment of SMEs and MSMEs.. and of course they completely destroyed all rural communities. Bandits and criminals have now taken over.
Nigeria is already a business country. What we need now is an ethical revolution leader, visionary bridge builder, natural arbitrator, re-orientator and someone who has something for every demographic group and can ensure that they are achieved. |
