Woah. That is pretty impressive. Kenya is trying to do probably most of that - but your scale is simply breathtaking. For instance National Feeding Program for all public schools in primary to secondary. This really should be the template for many countries. I know WB/IMF will berate countries for investing on social programs - but this is what is exactly needed - human development investment.

I also know politicians used to mega corruption like Nigerian (and partly Kenyan) don't want such social program because it's very hard to steal money meant for social programs that have to be distributed - to every nook & cranky - and it easy to steal infrastructure funds - by demanding 10% from every contractor.

chrisagyei:
Through taxes. That's why imported items and manufactured items gets expensive including petrol products. They are all taxed to support all the huge social programs. From free compulsory education from basic to secondary schools nationwide and highly subsidized and cheap tertiary education to national health insurance scheme which is automatic also for people above 60 years and over 50 % national subscribers enjoying free health to highly subsidized farming which makes farming very attractive and lucrative to National Youth Employment Programs with millions of youth being employed and trained by the government to SADA which is Savannah Accelerated Development Program developing all the Northern poor regions to LEAP program which gives stipulated 150. cedis or so monthly to the very poor aged to National School feeding Program which feeds all public school students daily nutritious balanced meal from basic to secondary schools. There are over 50 other national social programs making Ghana the first sub Sahara Country to reduce poverty drastically and on course to eliminate poverty by 2025 according to the UN.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 9:36am On Feb 17, 2019
VAx = NHIS - To make sure that all Ghanaian citizens made some contribution to the scheme, a 2.5% Health Insurance Levy on selected goods and services was passed into law so that the money collected could be put into a National Health Insurance Fund to subsidize fully paid contributions to the District Health Insurance Schemes.

That probably the trick - 2.5% health insurance levy.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 9:34am On Feb 17, 2019
I think both infrastructure and social investment has to go hand in hand. Ghana definitely is one of most progressive sub-saharan country - and will achieve middle-class faster than many countries.

How do you finance the national health scheme? How do make sure the poor can afford coverage - assuming it's insurance?

Many delegates have been sent from Nigeria to Ghana on several occasions, Nigeria has sent sent delegate on education, how Ghana was able to perfect at terriatry level, tourism, and likewise on religious tolerance. Ghana has both muslim and christain too. but tbey have been living in harmony.

in Ghana, one can undergo a brain surgery or heart surgery for as little as 1 dollar 50 cents (600 naira)under the health care scheme so far it is caused by accident.

People are fickle.Zuma was Malema. If Ramaphosa with his education & business acumen fails - and Malema is next. Malema is populist. So he'll easily get in.

But from the look of the few South Africans here, they don't see Malema at the helm any time soon. He is only good in the street or the opposition.

3.6B for 2,100Mw by some Egyptian firm sound like we have another Ethiopia situation. That huge grand reinnascance dam turns out was big con - foundation too weak to support the dam. Those things can only be really "estimated" once foundation work is done.

Be prepared for several cost variation or a white elephant

Anyway Uganda are building 600Mw for 1.7B dollars - and that was 10yrs ago. Now you tells us you can build nearly 4 times bigger dam - for - twice the cost in 2019!

https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/business/Tanzania-hydropower-dam-to-cost-more-than-double/2560-4983074-1123cf1z/index.html

That expert is right - that dam will cost 10B! - if it ever get completed.

This not the first dam to be build in the world - so it easy to estimate.

Kazikazi:
A dam will cost 3b. Where are you getting 9b from?
FYI, we had 40 companies who were bidding for the project! None of them asked for 9 billions. All of them were in 3 billion range. So how will the 6b get into equation? Remember, this is engineering feat, its mathematical.

The extra 2000 of MW will go into manufacturing, mining especially a gold smelter and steel smelters which are in the pipeline. We couldn't do all those mega projects for lacking power. Our power demand per annum grows by 10 to 15%. More than 90% of Tanzania's minerals are still lying underground. We extracted less than 10% of our mineral reserves. So we need power more than kenya.

In case we gets more power we will export to anyone

Huge disaster - that is why poverty is increasing - and all human indices are down and keep regressing. Why can't they borrow from Ghana - or they are codeined in their delusion of grandeur.

In Nigeria, the only state who try to influence that was ondo state Goverment. but the process was cut short. The state build mother amd child hospital ( first of its kind in africa) , he also build severy basics elementry schools to speed up educational progress in the state and he was on the plan to introduce a universal health care ( called kaadi igbeayo) before all plans went opposite.

Nigeria Goverment focus on infrastructure rather than human development

We have had 3 national elections since the 2007 pogrom - if you include repeat election - and there was no ethnic violence. There were the usual police & protestors clashing. Dealing with hate speech means drawing the line btw is acceptable and what isn't - and people taking responsibility.

Anyway talking to Nigerian on anything progressive like that is like talking to a stone. You live in a zoo - where anything goes.

You need to deal with ethnic violence in little India fast. Shutting down internet forum has not helped you. I hope your next election would not be like the ones before it in terms of violence.

This is actually what Africa needs most in addition to universal basic education. Educated and healthy people tend to find solutions to their problems more easily than the less so.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 8:13am On Feb 17, 2019
Western Kenya still depend on Jinja - Sondu -no dam reservoir & Turkwel -pokots- has issues!. Uganda makes a kill - selling power at 21kshs a unit. But now I think Ketraco is about done connecting Naivasha's Geothermal to western kenya -. Turkwell was suppose to fill that void but it's been closed for years now due to insecurity problem. It such a shame that such investment - 100MW - of power - cannot be produced because kenya police cannot gurantee the security of Kengen stuff. Sondu Mirru really functions only during rainy season because it doesn't have a reservior dam.

Uganda are going to get in trouble if they don't figure out how to consume 1,000MWs - Karuma dam alone will produce 600MWs - and it cost them nearly 2B dollars!!

Anyway maybe South Africa will eventually buy all the excess power given ANC inability to bring in new power sources down south.

NairobiWalker:
Actually, we no longer import power from Uganda. In the colonial times, Kenya and Uganda were like one country (British East Africa Protectorate), there was only one source of power (Owen Falls Dam) and it was in Uganda. However immediately after independence Kenya started Constructing its own dams (Seven folks) and by the 1980s when they were complete, we were producing more electricity than Uganda and didn't have to import it from Ug.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 8:07am On Feb 17, 2019
Precisely. Some of these investments are not well thought out. Kenya is already more than self-sufficient and there are still more investment on the pipeline. Uganda have nearly 1,000MW coming online soon (Karuma dam alone is 600MW) - and yet they are barely consuming 500MW. You can all excess capacity from Ethiopia and Tanzania. Unless East Africa really start doing serious minning, steel manufacturing and such heavy consumers of power - there is already an over-capacity - if you consider the power consumption per capita is very low due to poverty.

We may see a lot of white elephants. Better focus maybe on dams fro water supply and irrigation.

Jonraid:
A nine billion dollar dam? That's almost the 10 billion they collect as annual revenues!

Who will consume all the 2000 plus MW of electricity from that dam? I doubt if they have the capacity to absorb all that. Both Ethiopia and Tanzania are looking towards selling Kenya their electricity. Kenya is on the other hand consolidating its own power production. We ony import power from Uganda during the drought so as to cover our deficit because of the low power output in our hydro plants . We are now building new dams and focusing on geothermal and other renewables, I don't think we will be in this business if importing some little power in the years to come.

Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 7:20am On Feb 17, 2019
I am glad it didn't happen.

Obviously we have ethnicity problem that eventually boiled over and about 1K were killed & about half a million displaced in 2007 - but we have taken action. First that ethnic bloodletting gave us new constitution that has devolution (weaker form of federalism) and that gaves us 47 counties that are somewhat independent. Those 47 counties generally mirror the 44 tribes and sub-tribes. And this has lessen the tribal competition for power somewhat.

We also enacted very strong hate speech laws. Forums like Nairaland were shutdown. Nairaland would cease to exists if it was in kenya. We have far-reaching hate speech laws. You cannot use say facebook in Kenya to spread ethnic hate - you'll be picked and charged for spreading hate speech.

You read Nairaland - the amount of ethnic hate speech there - would get Seun in serious trouble in Kenya. The few kenyans in diaspora spread hate speech once in a while but it's now rare - because the police cyber unit will definitely track you.

We have National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) whose job is to address and reduce inter-ethnic conflicts.

As you can see the difference btw Kenya and Nigeria is day & night. We are a progressive country. You're regressing. If we have a problem - we try to find solutions to it - and not ignore it and hope it will somehow disappear.

obaaderemi:
Because it didn't happen, you idiot. Nigeria has serious problem with ethnic violence but don't believe everything you read on nairaland, especially when it's coming from terrorists like el rufai, the Kaduna governor. But then, We still remember how thousands died during Kenya's election, including babies and how your president was bundled to international court of justice. You always look for an excuse to be bashed. The Ethiopian girl knows what she is talking about.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 6:46am On Feb 17, 2019
Both Nigeria and Ethiopia are leading in ethnic fights - that rarely make news. In Ethiopia and Nigeria - in a week 100 or even 500 people can be killed and thousand displaced in ethnic fights that don't even make international news. Just like it's routine for Boko-Haram to kill so many people and displace thousands without it ever making news. Election violence are so bad - 65 people got killed in Kaduna and it's like nothing happened.
obaaderemi:
You are correct at the bolded though many people do not know this.
Foreign AffairsRe: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp2018: 11:16am On Feb 16, 2019
Yeap - I am also worried about our Kenya power - we really need more than one company - otherwise if they screwed up like they are doing - public has no options except prop it up. South Africa cannot do with Eskom. That gives Eskom incredible power to mess around. Whatever happens - South Africans have to clean up Eskom mess - or the turbines won't turn - and soon you're in Nigeria mess. Nigeria mess is hard to come out - it a system of distrusts - customers don't trust the power company - so big consumers (like Dangote) start generating own power - leaving power companies with poor little customers who are not profitable - the distribution company can't pay the producers - producers can't turn the turbines - and it become a spiral to the bottom.

Jonraid:
The only painful way to get out of the mess. The inflation looks likely to shoot up when that move is taken into effect at the time the economic growth is hovering at about 2 or 3 percent!

I think Ramphosa as businessman knows what need doing - I think his proposal of splitting Eskom is long overdue. I am suprised it has NOT been done. Nearly every African country was forced by WB to split their "ESKOMS" into several companies 20yrs ago - in Kenya our Kenya Power- was split into a regulator, transmission company, generating company and distribution company. I think once that split is done - South African can hike the price of electricity for some time to clean up the balance sheet of Eskom - and help them pay off their debts.
JaceBlaze:
It's R100 billions in debts actually,I don't know who's going to bail Eskom out of the mess but I think it needs to be fixed quick before we go the Naija route.Zuma tried what? aren't we in this mess because of nine years of hell he unleashed on South Africa?

ESKOM - is the giant mess - with debt of 25-30B dollars -guaranteed by South Africa public - that is about all Kenya's external debt. I read they are now generating like a 3rd of it's capacity -meaning 15,000MW out of 45,000MW installed capacity. Starting to sound like Nigeria with 12,000MW installed capacity but can barely hit peak of 3,000MW.If Ramaphosa doesn't sort Eskom - it could well take him down and drag South Africa to Sub-saharan standards. Zuma tried but got engulfed in Guptas & brought down the KPMG with it..

That was a stupid proposal. I am glad Treasury didn't sign it. At least not yet. I think we need to dualize roads based on solid demand projections. For now Nakuru - Nairobi make economic sense.. actually Rironi to Total...should be dual. Then Nairobi maybe to Emali - and Mariakani to Mombasa. Then in all the major towns have by-passes that are dual - and continue with interchanges. Basically KENHA should be left alone to decide what needs to get done...based on traffic surveys.

Kenya is racing to dualize most of it's major highways despite not having earned more than 1 trillion dollars from Oil in the last 20yrs.

I use to think Nigeria had earned 600B dollars - but it appears Jonathan regime alone had like 400B dollars from Oil - Olesegun 400B from Oil - and Buhari 100B dollars from Oil

And yet you have NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT.

Clearly you're a slowpoke to think you cannot hold a candle against kenya. Just tell us where nearly 1 trillion dollars of oil from 1999-2019 has GONE INTO.

68816419:
how can a major highway in a country be left to rot and remain a single lane high way since Independent and yet you claimed to be progressing in Road development?.

Kenyans are seriously cursed indeed!

Nairobi-Mombasa highways= 470KM (yet remains single lane)

while
kano - Maiduguri highways = Distance between Kano and Maiduguri is 505 kilometers (314 miles ) is been dualized and has atained at around 62% completion
and

Abuja - kano = 378(formally 4 lane but now six lane) .
not to mentioned lagos-ibadan ,(same 6 lanes,73% completed) highways, kogi Abuja , Edo, Ph,Enugu,Calabar which are all been dualized .
Kenya is indeed not to be compared with the giant of Africa.

Yeap I think it makes sense to expand the airport and build the new greenfield runway & terminals.
If you look about 5yrs ago - we had like 3.5M - and by 2016 - we were around 6.5M - and now it's well on it's way to 8M passengers annually.
So if you go with that same projections - in next 5yrs - JKIA will probably be handling more than twice - the passengers now - maybe 15-20M like Joburg.

The cancelled projects need to be restored.

Here brief look at the passengers figures

2016- 7,112.000

2015 - 6,481.000

2013 -3,451.000

1983! Like Just30 says - I think right now - Chadian Army would eat whatever BokoHaram leave off your lunch plate.
forgiveness:
I have this for you. Nigeria had war with Chadians military. It lasted only for three days with serious beating and fleeing. They ran away with their tails in between. The same Chadians military will overan Ghana in months. grin

PROVOCATION.

image nigeriannation.com
On 18 April 1983, in a well planned and rehearsed operation, three thousand Chadian soldiers under the command of Idris Derby invaded and seized 19 Islands in the Lake Chad axis in Borno State. Twenty four hours later six villages in Borno State fell to Chadian troops.

Stunned by this daring unprovoked attack, Nigeria’s President Alhaji Shehu Shagari orders the Commander of the Nigerian Army 3rd Army Division General Muhammadu Buhari to flush out the invaders.

General Buhari, in his capacity as General Officer Comnanding (GOC) augmented his forces with the Nigerian Army 21st Amoured Brigade in Maiduguri.

A skilled military tactician General Buhari resisted the temptation to use Nigeria’s overwhelming superiority in amoury and man power to charge headlong . He knew the Chadians were highly skilled fighters who use their excellent mobility to their advantage. Instead he ordered the Nigerian Army Scout Regiment to recconnitor Chadian military positions.

The Nigerian Army Scout Regiment is the reconnaissance arm of the infantry. Their job is to obtain and disperse viral combat and battlefield information on the enemy under any conditions.

An Army Scout assigned to the 301 Field Artillery Regiment scans the horizon for artillery targets in the vast featureless plains of the Sambisa Forest.
Reports from Scouts confirmed the Generals suspicion. Expecting a massive retaliatory attack spearheaded by tanks, the occupying Chadian troops had prepared anti series of tank obstacles on the likely approaches by digging 10 ft trenches around fortified positions. The plan was to lure Nigerian tanks towards the myriad of concealed trenches, making it impossible to navigate. Once trapped the tanks would then be engaged by concealed troops with anti-tank weapons and RPG’s at close range.

SHOCK AND AWE.

With the Intel gathered by scouts the GOC began preparation for a punitive attack. Taking advantage of the night Nigerian troops quitely moved into flanking positions.

At day break, the Nigerian Army, under the able Commander General Muhammadu Buhari launched a massive operation to dislodge the invading Chadian forces. 4,000 soldiers besieged Chadian forces on three fronts. As Chadian troops came under relentless artillery bombardment from the eastern flank, Nigerian soldiers in the Western axis began their push to link up with the 3rd strike component in the rear, effectively encircling Chadian forces.

As Chadian casualties mounted General Buhari ordered a temporary halt to the advance, to allow Chadian forces an escape route back into Chad via the northern axis.

Stunned and disoriented by the unexpected attack from seemingly everywhere by Nigeria infantry, Chadian soldiers began to abandoned their positions in a disorganized manner and fled the battlefield in droves, leaving their vehicles and equipment behind.

It was at this moment that Nigerian troops, led by General Buhari gave chase to the fleeing Chadian soldiers. To the General, flushing out the invaders was not enough, he was determined to make a bold statement to the Chadians and teach them a bitter lesson.

Nigerian troops crossed the border into Chadian territory and continued its pursuit. Orders from Nigeria’s President to halt his advance fell on deaf ears. Nigerian troops continued its advance until they were 50 kilometres from the N’Djamena, the Chadian Capital. Facing possible court marshal General Buhari stoped the advance and withdrew his forces.

General Buhari was immediately summoned by the President for disobeying a direct order from the President to stop his advance. In his defence the General claimed in the heat of battle he was unaware he had crossed into Chadian territory.

There was a time we were begging our enemy for water, because we were going to die of thirst. The military helicopter, we were told, would bring water but wouldn’t be able to land because where we are is not safe for it. And, I would ask, what about us on the ground here?”

The insurgents may have killed quite a number of soldiers, but these fighters say lack of food and water should also be held responsible for soldiers’ death.
