Nigerians are follow follow. I came to Europe as a student myself and in less than a decade, I became a citizen. I saw the UK, but I avoided it like plague.

Firstly, I decided the course of study, then study the immigration policies of every single European countries. Then applied to study in countries with good immigration policies. I choosed Finland.

All my Nigerian classmates back then are mostly fininish citizens, except those that doesn't want or can't pass finnish language citizenship exams, but still they are permanent residents. As a student, I was working and earning and tuition fee was free then.

And if I really wanted to study in the UK, I'll go through my school erasmus exchange program and study a semseter there for free. I know back then that if I enter UK, na suffer I just subscribed to.

Also, UK before brexit was not in the schengen zone. So a UK visa can not make you travel whole of Europe. UK was a total disaster to my strategy then. During holidays then, I'll go hustle in other countries with my finnish schengen visa.

Only if people seek their own path and not follow follow. And of course, study every country immigration policy before you put head, it's your survival at play here. And yoy have nothing to fall back on.

You were able to make the right choice because you took your time to study the immigration policies of all the countries in Europe.

How many Nigerians can do just that? A lot of us are just too lazy that's why we often end up being duped by fraudulent agents or using our hands to rope ourselves into deep shit because of misinformation.

If lot of us can carefully do as you did; dig into various travel destinations carefully, we will not only avoid falling into the hands dubious travel agents but also choose countries that will make it very easy to achieve our goals.

Because of how much this thread has trended, I'll drop one sure route of how to live in any eu countries as a family without hassle permanently. This route works well with a couple.

Instead of paying millions upon millions to go study in the UK without assurance of permanently stay, apply to study in Portugal instead. Then you and your wife would be giving student visa and any child born in portugal becomes Portuguese citizen at birth if the parents have lived in Portugal for at least one year.

And as the parent of a Portuguese child (also an eu citizen), you can move and live in any country in the eu with your child. It's not a privilege, its a right. It's far far cheaper to study in lots of countries. Why do people kill themselves with the UK?

Especially that the UK in practice drafted cunning laws to kick you out when you're done studying. Please operate an independent mind when travelling. Don't just follow others. Search each countries nationality law, see what it takes to be a citizen and fashion your plan towards that. Survival journey is not for the reckless.

I know someone whom I adviced five years ago that went through this route, and now is chilling and living large in Ireland, without the hassle of visa and all the harsh rules associated with it. As a parent of an eu citizens, you're basically a citizen yourself in practice just that you can apply for citizenship in maybe five years time.

If you also want to study, then take your eu child to any Scandinavian countries, where education is free. Establish your residence there and study foe free, live without fear of immigration and a straight pathway to citizenship. God touch my mind today normally I don't give this kind of information.

Oga panso sense no go kill you.

I honestly don't know why there is much rush to UK and co. Like you just pointed out, Portugal and a host of other countries are way much better than the UK in terms of having favorable international immigration policies but we are all just blinded by the rush to live in the United Kingdom. I don't know whether it's the "Kingdom" that's in the UK that making us obsessed with it

Right from childhood, I grew up to see my parents using the word "British" do describe a person that's cunning. I did not really understand until I was much older to grasp the reason why Britain is associated with cunningness. Those guys just want us to invest our hard earned money in the guise of giving us good education, but they have an ulterior motive: to exploit us and send us back to where we come from.

cheesy cheesy grin grin. I saw a lady that graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwa uni last year, got a mail from a recruiter for interview. She asked for 4 months to prepare, and then she smashed it. She's in London now. This happened just last year.

She was contacted because she do attempt google coding competition monthly. I checked, and I noticed less than 5 Nigerians world wide participate.

Like this, I'm attempting the next three this year, until I get to the top 200, which gives automatically an invite for interview.

I never knew one could be invited for job interview like she was.

Google gave her 4 technical interviews and 1 behavioral interview. The whole 4 technical interviews were on DSA. Mehn!!!

This reminds me of a reddit joke.

Leetcode prepares you for a good job. Competitive programming ensures that you will absolutely never have sex again.

Lol. DSA won't give you the knowledge of a 2-3 years experienced Java, Laravel, React etc developer. Even if you're a pro Leetcoder, you can't pull magic.

Someone good at DSA(I mean good, not a solution crammer), would be good at problem solving and learning but still you'd be useless to the team for a while.

Like someone mentioned, FAANG can be cool with the dev being useless for longer periods of time but smaller - medium companies can't afford such deadweight. I still feel the DSA evangelism is a "cart before the horse" scenario.

In other words, after learning DSA and getting good at solving leetcode questions, apply for jobs that are your mate, that is, faang level kind of jobsgrin

Onboarding in Google and generally FAANG takes 3 to 6 months, that's enough time to learn any tech stack if you're competent enough, though this is not the case for mid and smaller tech companies, you'll need a stack or language at the very least.

In order words, a solid knowledge in DSA will give one the Davidic courage to face the Goliaths of the tech industry. That's interesting.

Makes no sense passing the interview only to get fired a month into the job for being totally useless to the team

This part cracked me up grin

Can someone with a solid knowledge of DSA be completely useless in a team? A lot of faang engineers even recommend being good at a programming language and DSA than just knowing frameworks upon frameworks without a sound knowledge of DSA.

And like what tensa once said, once you've been able to understand and get a job with DSA, you should be experienced and good enough to learn any relevant technology and framework your job will need within a short period of time after getting the job.

House for VI?gringrin

One guy who has recruited SWE for Google and Amazon did make serious emphasis on DSA. He said it's the key to getting into this companies most especially Google.

Another guy (a SWE for years) even said DSA is far more important than frameworks and technologies. He said different frameworks and web technologies will keep coming and going but DSA will remain forever.

These two comments were more than enough to convince me change my focus

Instead of learning frameworks and tools at your age I would focus more on computer science fundamentals. Dsa and systems design and go heavy on them. That's what your mates are doing in Asia, Europe and America. You have enough time on your hands to learn the basic frameworks and tools later on. Just my two cents. You can try linking up with some of your mates working at faang companies already guys like chidubem who represented Nigeria at the IOI and Micheal who's a 100 level student doing internship at Goldman Sachs while his mates are at home on strike. They focused more on fundamentals and not frameworks.

Chief that's the goal now.

I've dropped front end thing I was learning. I'm currently learning Python since it's very much relevant in DSA. After which I'll immerse myself deeply in DSA, Leetcode, and Hackerrank for like 9 months-1 year. That was exactly the path a tech guy recommended on YouTube, and it makes a whole lot of sense.

I just pray this path will end up making sense for me

Romance / Re: It Takes Courage To Live This Life. by SavageBoy: 3:22pm On Aug 16, 2022
pansophist:

As they say, ''life no balance'' at all.

Lots of wealthy people suffer, and if you have eyes beyond the ordinary, you will see it clearly. Also, wealthy people have realized that life is lived ''immaterially'', but poor people think life is lived ''materially''. Unless one grew from grass to grace, it's difficult to see how it is on the other side.

My ex-boss, for example, worried not about money, but that he doesn't time to spend with his family, that how he wishes he is strong and young enough to do certain things e.g run a marathon, and how he must keep working to maintain the affluence his family is used to. If you are rich, you must maintain that lifestyle, or else, it would be grace to grass, which is like heaven to hell.

All the people you have oppressed go laugh you tire, your kids and wife may turn against you because they do have oppressed others thinking you won't go broke one day, hanging out with some certain friends will become impossible due to a downgrade of your social level. In fact, a wealthy lifestyle is upward ever, downwards never.

In my opinion, the few places where being rich has no downside is in Scandinavian countries, a region where almost everyone is wealthy. In Norway for example, the average adult is or will be a millionaire in his/her lifetime. Everybody around you is wealthy and society has a social system, that will make sure you maintain the highest quality of life even if you go broke.

Of course, this is not a reason to remain poor, the top feels much better than the bottom. But it's not a paradise 100%. As for being ugly and poor, all I have to say is, try make money and cover your ugliness. But if money cant erase the ugliness, all I can say is that may God have mercy grin

My goal is not to be wealthy where I'll have to neglect other important things in life.

I just want to be financially independent, able to have enough money to feed myself and my family. Whilst I'm living a very quiet and simple life, so people won't pay attention to me and expect much from me thereby increasing the pressure on me to work hard to keep up with that kind of lifestyle

The British guy was just an exchange student spending just a semester, so he left after he was done. But he improved a bit. We went out a lot, and he mingled with all kinds of people, that was why he went abroad in the first place.

If he continued like that, he would be less shy. Social anxiety is actually a thing. But he is a book-smart, a nerd, a very intelligent guy, who at the age of 23, never had a girlfriend, because he would rather go to hell than approach one. He is so scared of women, I wonder if he will ever get married.

As for the Brazillian girl, she really put an effort to break out of her sheltered life, but it was because her parents reduced significantly her monthly stipend, leaving her in the cold to fend for herself. Her transformation was shocking. She got a job at a restaurant alongside her studies.

Now she works in Brussels for the EU government, paying her bills and living life as an adult. The last time I saw her, she was really happy. She felt free because being sponsored by her parents was like bondage as she doesn't have a voice of her own.

Though she still struggles with the dark fact that no one actually cares about her as her parent did. One time a friend stopped talking to her, she was heartbroken, saying how can people be so heartless? But she is genuinely kind, soft inside, and learning to be tough.

Hmmm... nice story

I know how painful that can be. I studied in a very elite university and everyday was almost like depression. Kids of 19 coming to class with posh cars, skin as bright as the sun, and even if they decide to drop out, suffering will never be a portion.

I felt like going to naija, grab my papa for throat, and change am for am straight. grin And I was the few black dude in that school. The rich kids will now form clique amongst themselves and shut it out to others. Class then was more of a fashion parade that actual learning.

But deep down, I knew my time de come, or if its not me, my kids will enjoy such. These kids had parents that worked hard, and if yours didn't do it for you, do it for your kids. But there are things I saw that made me realise that rich or poor, we all suffer equally.

A wealthy British man approached me on time and appeal to be friend with his son, that his son is so shy and insular. This son is literally what Nigerians will call a mumu. He is not dumb, but a didirin. Slap him, he will probably go home and call the police. He fear pass chicken. The price of over-protection and over-providing.

One wealthy Brazilian girl is so scared of facing the world. She always tell me how jealous she is when she sees people who are confident and hustle their way, that they can survive in life unlike her that relies on her parents wealth.

Her parents also were deeply worried that their timid daughter will run down their company after they hand it over to her. Because of my confidence, self-assurance and individuality, lots of these folks even with their wealth wanted to be friends, just to know how to live life being strong and tough.

It was easy to be their friend because I don't care if your father is Bill Gates, I no send you. If we go out, I'll pay for myself, and treat you like every normal person. I respect myself alot, so being my friend didn't burdened them in anyway.

So life gives us different coin, but you'll be naive to think they others don't have their own struggles. Everybody does. Some of these kids are in what I'll describe as being on an "existential drip". Take away the drip (their parental support) and you'll see that you're better than them in everything that matters.

Many have parents that were not there in their life due to the pursuit of wealth. And so on. So my guy, life will give you all the reason to go home and punch your father in the face asking him, "why you fork up"? grin but don't ever think it's greener on the other side.

Nice experience pansophist

So, how did your relationship with the British and Brazilian kids turn out to be? Pls say the story, the story be like one wey go sweetgrin
