Career / Re: My 9 Months Experience As A Non-Tech Remote Worker In Nigeria by SavageBoy: 2:42pm On Aug 08, 2022
Nice one pocolee... sorry pocohantas grin

Your experience is quite an interesting one and I can relate with it.

I've known upwork since 2016/2017, only God know the evil spirit that stopped me from joining then.

Eventually, I opened an account in the first week of April 2020 as a software engineer. Getting approved almost immediately, I changed it to a writer's profilegrin

I did not send any proposal at all till June 1st this year when I decided to take it more seriously. Got several feedbacks and eventually landed a long term writing job for a US based client. And it has been a wonderful experience so far

The completion in upwork is crazy. The Pakistanis, the Filipinos, and Indians have made it really difficult getting a work there. And the fact that we're Nigerians, we've already had like two own goals already.

Though some Nigerians are making it big. I recently came across a Nigerian based writer that has earned more than $100k+. Success in upwork is many a time a game of effort, chance, and luck.

it so bad you made comments like this on another person's post out of pure hate and dishonesty

Don't mind the guy.

The guy will be no better than the OP in the future. And come to think of it, the yeye trash talker is just barley starting his tech journey. We'll be here waiting for the time when he will ask us to rate his design work.

Even if you want to criticize someone, do so constructively. If there is nothing to commend the op about, at least commend him for the effort he put into building something.

That's one thing I hate about we Africans, we're just too quick dampen the zeal of fellow black folks like us... feeling like alpha and omega

@op didn't mind the trash talkers. You tried. Continue putting in the effort, with time you'll improve and get better.

Even if surgeries were performed on that rotten brain of yours, you won't still be able to comprehend my point. The same YouTube tutorials that placed a limitation on your career, what kind of Tech guy goes about looking for someone else's grammatical error, I'm sure the boy doesn't even know you exist. Why will you ever be busy coding or mentoring someone? Bros answer now? Your google search business finally failed you. 365days fasting will still be a waste and I hope the OP can use your case as a lesson.... 25ways To Be A Failure in Programming!! Check his signature.

Can we just be civilized for once?

You don't just come here and start insulting people for no justifiable reason. The person whose grammar he jokingly corrected even took it as a joke.

You're making fun of his career, but know this and know this well, it would take you 10 years of hard work to achieve what he has achieved in tech. What's your career projection in tech being like?

I saw the useless advice you're giving the guy, let him include JavaScript, Php, MySQL... what kind of tech professional will ask someone who haven't program to put these solid programming languages in his CV? Or do you think creating a tech CV and portfolio is just like your regular #15K salary CV?

You even went ahead to tell the guy not to use YouTube tutorials or buy courses! Instead let him come so that you'll put him through. This is the funniest and dumbest advice of the century.
And you claim yo be a computer science graduate. Mehn! that's sad.

Back to you @op... what exactly do you want from this UK man that you haven't gotten. If this story of yours is genuine, that you saw yourself through in school with your WordPress skills, what then will this man be able to give you that you haven't gotten?

If you will have to send your CV to him, come out plain with just the skills, show your work portfolio. It's as simple as that. If he has a job for you, fine. If he doesn't, fine. Spend the next 1 year of your life learning to code. Once you've learned to code, reach out to him. It won't be hard since you already have his contact, and have spoken with him in the past.

As simple as that.

Career / Re: Remote Work: Any Hope For Non-Tech Nigerians? by SavageBoy: 5:02am On Jul 26, 2022
Tech still remains the best for whoever that wants a remote work.

But if you don't wanna go through that route, then you can follow tensa's suggestion; salesforce admin. The pay is quite huge, though some are of the notion that salesforce admin roles are being taken by salesforce developers, but I still believe one can get a job solely as a salesforce admin. Just understand the salesforce platform well, write the salesforce cert exam, and start looking for remote job opportunities.

If you're good with words, you could try freelance writing(with good SEO skills). Though it seems saturated, but a lot of folks jumping into writing are really mediocre writers. Sometime last year, around December ending or so, a particular fb friend of mine, Chima mmeje made a post that she was $2K short of earning her first 6-figure income in dollars as a writer based in Nigeria. Though she left Nigeria to the UK few months ago, she's still a testimony that some really good writers earn really well even here in Nigeria.

You could also try product design, that too is nice and affords you lot of opportunity to work remitely. Some people say virtual assistant is good too, I don't have much idea about it.

Rwanda is just a tourist country. Nothing more.
A country that is sooooooo broke and looking for money that she had to sign agrement with UK to be recieving illega immigrants sneaking to europe for a couple of millions of dollars per year for accepting/accomodating and feeding them. A very stupid deal. Sooner or later, the illegal immigrants will outgrow their small population and economy and ove-run them.

I'm telling you, Rwanda is nothing more than a dignified shit hole

I've read quite a lot of first hand stories about the country today. It's not worth migrating to

Meanwhile, Software Engineering / Development has a great future. Even if some people dey japa, that will create more opportunities for those wey remain. I know that people are looking for opportunities to emigrate to US or Europe because starting pay for Developers/Engineers can be between $55K to over $100K. Who wouldn’t want that?

God will keep us alive till next year, come back and quote me next year after the election.

I know devs will still be in much demand even here in Nigeria, I'm just talking of the condition of living at the moment, and the possibility that things will get better. We haven't talked about the messed up security situation of the country.

So I don't plan living because of higher pay as a foreign Dev, govt taxes will still suck a whole lot of your income. I just want to leave because of peace and sanity of mind. I don't really fancy abroad like that, I may still reside in a much safer and better place here in Africa(that's if there still is)

When I was looking for my first dev job, I used to check how the job market in other African countries were and honestly aside South Africa, Nigeria has the highest number of vacancies out there. A lot of jobs we look down on here in Nigeria you won't even see to do in these countries. Africa is doomed. I knew this 2 years ago when I was job hunting. A whole African country will have only 80 jobs. A village in Canada will have 10000 new jobs lol.

Well, if I'll be relocating to another African country, I'm not hoping to get a job there. I should have been working remotely with a company in the west.

I'm just looking at living at a place that's nice living conditions, low crime rate and have stable power supply.

Rwanda is a very poor country. Despite all the hype, Togo is a much richer and better country than Rwanda. Rwanda's per capita income isn't even up to 600 USD. One of the ways to know a good country is to go on LinkedIn and search for jobs available in that country. Rwanda has less than 200 vacancies for the whole country. That's to tell you that there's nothing going on there economically. Even if you start a business who do you sell to? Most Rwandans don't make up to 500 USD in a whole year. The country is also landlocked. Their neighbours are also in a state of war and chaos. Avoid, Africa is doomed!!!!

AngelicBeing:
I agree, a quick addup to what you posted above, the Rwanda Constitution has been amended and Kagame will be in power till 2034, and it is silently been echoed that either his daughter or son-in-law will take over from Kagame

Rwanda is owned by Kagame, Kagame is like a small god / idol in Rwanda, nobody, l repeat nobody dare utter any negative things against Kagame, German Ambassador was sent packing because RIB intercepted a correspondence were the Ambassador called Kagame a dictator and Kagame ordered him out of the country

A Nigerian called Mr Bello who was solely incharge of supplying catering services to all airlines entering Kigali was set up on spurious allegations, arrested and detained for 3years, he died and his corpse sent back to Nigeria (only the Nigerian Ambassador was allowed to see him in detention before he died, the Ambassador said this to me one on one at his office and I confirmed same from other consular officials, the horrors I heard going on in Rwanda scared me to my bone marrows)

Again, all the big businesses in Kigali is owned by Kagame via proxies, the Hutus are waiting in the flangs for a comeback to power, several opposition members / military personnel of Hutu extraction are in neighboring East African countries waiting for the slightest opportunity to comeback and overthrow the crook called Kagame

Rwanda is militarised, from 2 to 3 pm daily you see police men with AK 47 in almost every Junction all over the country, in the night, heavily armed military personnel are posted all over the country, citizens are docile because if you talk, Na straight to jail.

I am able to say all this because I am not in the country and l am anonymous, the small project (uncompleted vacation home) l have their is already in the market, l will sell it off and not step into that country again.

I see a LIBYA kind of revolution in the future, Kagame is just a joker, masquerading as a Democrat but he is a deadly killer, he is actually called the BUTCHER OF EAST AFRICA considering his antecedents and the number of people he has killed before / during the Genocide and now...

Lastly, all the information above concerning how they killed Mr Bello and other big investors from Nigeria whose investment were taken over by Kagame is not in the news and the few Nigerians in Rwanda are not even aware of the news but I got all the information from the embassy, Abeg Rwanda no be am, go to Rwanda and invest at your own risk grin

Chief, what about a techie working remotely? would you advise a programmer to move there?

Africa is doomed for the next 100 years. We should have used globalization to build our economies. Countries are becoming protectionist now. Look at the trade wars between US and China. We don't even have the skills to build stuff. Our populations are largely uneducated and unskilled. There's no hope for Africa, just save yourself.

Do you have any idea about Rwanda, a couple of folks who've gone there have said really nice things about the country

I schooled in Ghana, when I gained admission a dollar was equal to a cedi. When I left, one dollar was equal to 5 cedis. He already knew a programming language. Knowing a programming language is completely different from learning frontend or backend tools.
You have to know a programming language very well to learn dsa. I recommend python because it has heaps. Java has heaps but too verbose. JavaScript doesn't have any heaps if you get a heap question you have to build a heap in JavaScript yourself. You can use books like grokking algorithms to learn the basics and start solving questions on leetcode and hackkerank till you get good.

Oh! thanks chief

Lol the Indian guy is just now learning html and css for his internship. He spent all his time learning algorithms and design patterns. Well it depends sha just get job you fit start with that html and css then when you get job you start dey learn those dsa cause dsa fit take you more than 2 years to get good. At least to be earning some money during that period. I don't know your situation. If your parents are very well to do and rucb then it's wiser to learn everything to get the high paying role but if you are from a poor family it's better to learn something that can give you a job at least and you can start learning the core things in that job. Imagine you dey learn dsa or design patterns and laptop spoil and You went through serious pain to even get the laptop lipsrsealed

Hey big chief, I'm trying to incorporate DSA into my self taught learning journey, but it just seems like one need to have a sound knowledge of coding before one can hop into DSA. I know you mentioned an Indian friend of yours who learned DSA before moving on to programming, and like what you and some other tech folks have said here, it's possible to learn DSA without having to go very deep in programming. So, what course or learning platform would you suggest I start with if I want to start learning DSA. A whole lot of DSA courses talks about DSA with python, JS, C++,Java and the likes. I don't any core programming knowledge yet, but would like to start learning DSA early enough. So, your input on how best I should start will be appreciated, I will be able to navigate the rest once I begin.
