Some say it's the next big thing after SWE because it's not saturated yet..

SWE isn't saturated.

People are jus trooping in but the % of people that knows it at exceptional degree is just a little fraction. Besides there are more than enough jobs for the large number of software engineers that know what they're doing.

Same with product design. Forget the large number of people rushing to learn UI/UX design, like what tensa once said; Nigeria do not really have world class designers. Sure, we have the very good ones, but they are very scarce. The rest are just your regular designers.

So, I'm not worried about the numbers or saturation level of any skill. My aim is just to be world class, which very few will attain.

I initially heard about Leetcode fro a Naija babe on YouTube (Bukola). She works at Google now..
According to her, she studied it day and night for months and later started appyling for jobs.

Since I'm following the Data Analytics pathway, I'll be learning DS&A by the sides when I plan to enter Data Engineering. For now, I'll learn what I need to become a BI dev or Data analyst.

Do you need DS&A for data analytics?

I was having a discussion with an old time Friend. He's a product of Mathematics and computer science, OAU. I'm not exaggerating, in my life I've not seen someone that knows mathematics like he does. This guy is a beast. Not capping.

He's also into programming, knows Java and Python on an advanced level. So on Sunday, we were talking about tech on ,I now mentioned Leetcode. I was surprised he hadn't even heard about it before, and funny enough he said he knows DS&A quite well, told me he started learning it in 2020. Though he said the thing is tough sha

He said he heard about it from CS Dojo, and decided to learn it for learning sake. The guy didn't see the power of the knowledge he already has. He was even using those technical jargons you guys use here; Array, hashmap, big O notation, how to use algorithms to determine the runtime of code, he talked about so many stuffs I couldn't understand

And I'm like if I knew what this guy know, I won't be in Nigeria. God forbid. I later told him about Leetcode, he said he will check it out and register. I could see the joy in his face when I told him about leetcode

SWE, DS&A and Leetcode issa goal. If hat's the fastest way to leave the trenches for good, and requires me sacrificing sleep and pleasure for sometime in order to get good at it, I will. I swear down

Yes she's even doing an MBA at Stanford. Today she organised a data structures and algorithms class on zoom.

For her to organize a DS&A class, she must have become a guru in this DS&A thingy.
But is there an end to learning DS&A or is it a lifelong process?
Programming / Re: How A Netflix Engineer Landed A $800k Job by SavageBoy: 12:50am On Jun 12, 2022
tensazangetsu20:

Yes to the bolded. Data structures is very hard lol. To me it's even more difficult than the coding itself. When I was learning JavaScript it was challenging but it wasn't as challenging as learning data structures from the ground up. Companies test for data structures and algorithms because they prioritize problem solving skills over anything and data structures and algorithms is just a standardised way to really test for that specific skill in an individual.

Wow!
But is it possible to get grounded in DS&A while having minimal knowledge about core programming?

Lol algorithms skills are needed for the interviews rather. Interview in big tech is centered solely around algorithms and systems design. No one cares about your stack or your field of software development. I don't know if you follow this girl adaora. She's very intelligent. She used to be a frontend developer but now she does cloud computing and embedded systems at Microsoft. With big companies it's all about the ability to learn fast and how smart you are not what you know or have done before. You should be able to pick up anything and run with it.

Yeah I know her.
If what you're saying is true, it means "data structures and algorithms" need to be classified as an independent field in tech, one that's independent of software engineering.
So why do bug tech coys prioritize knowledge of DS&A, what exactly is it's relevance?
Are you telling me now that if I can get a good job in tech if I have a sound knowledge of DS&A without really being good at coding?

Most of the algorithm gurus don't know anything about the real programming as you think. All the spend their time on is on algorithms unfortunately that's the skill needed for the job. Some start learning the real programming after they have gotten job and these companies are so big that no one expects you to make any impact till like 6 months after you have joined. Thats enough for any serious person to self learn front end and backend to start being productive.

Wait oh!
I'm just hearing this for the first time?
How are algorithms the skill needed for the job?
And how would someone get a tech job with just algorithms knowledge??

Lol the Indian guy is just now learning html and css for his internship. He spent all his time learning algorithms and design patterns. Well it depends sha just get job you fit start with that html and css then when you get job you start dey learn those dsa cause dsa fit take you more than 2 years to get good. At least to be earning some money during that period. I don't know your situation. If your parents are very well to do and rucb then it's wiser to learn everything to get the high paying role but if you are from a poor family it's better to learn something that can give you a job at least and you can start learning the core things in that job. Imagine you dey learn dsa or design patterns and laptop spoil and You went through serious pain to even get the laptop lipsrsealed

That Indian guy funny oh. Person never enter the main programming, he don't already start to dey learn algorithms.

For my case, I have a side hustle that's keeping me going unlike when man was broke and wanted to learn programming in 2 months. Due to the time demand and work project on ground,I haven't even continued the programming sef for sometime now.

I plan resuming next month, and will do so with full force
I think it would be a good idea to start learning DS&A immediately sef

That's the way see eh. I am on discord groups. This white and asian kids use Adderall to Study leetcode. Once you take Adderall you brain works ten times faster and you become seriously hyperfocused. The competition is so intense. It's all they spend their time doing. I am studying with an Indian guy who's still an undergraduate. He's in level 200 and has done 720 questions. He just got an internship at cisco.

My own is that after work I am so tired and I can't do more than 3 to 4 questions so my progress is very slow. By 1 am I start to feel sleepy even putting water in my legs and trying to study doesn't work for me. I just wish I could loss the ability to sleep temporarily and still function optimally.

Chief no go take something wey go knock your head oh grin

Well thank God your mum is a doctor.

Maybe I'll just calm down and learn this tech thing for like 1-2years,no rushing; learn the web Dev technologies, study and get good with DS&A and solve tons of leetcode questions. By the time I'll be finishing, I'll be getting a first huge salary job.
As per applying the knowledge I've gained,I might work on personal projects and freelance.

E be like say person gats calm down learn this tech thing well before person go blow. All of us want leave trenches in six months na why we dey rush want learn HTML,CSS and JS in 3 months grin

You dont need to be amongst the top 5 percent to command such a salary. You can be a mediocre dev and get such high salaries. The skills to interview as a software engineer and the skills to actually be a good software engineer are two opposite ends of the spectrum. If you spend the time studying for interviews you will be able to get such salary but if you spend the time learning to be a good programmer you will be a good programmer but you will never make it into any of the companies paying such salaries. If you check that guys leetcode profile he might have solved every question there and probably just revises them whenever he has interviews.

Probably someone like alex wice https://leetcode.com/awice/. He has solved almost everything there and doesnt stay too long at any job. He earns more than a million dollars a year.

There are big possibilities with leetcode I must say

The so called homeless people have shelters, free food, security and hope, yes hope, the most important thing. They are homeless but their passport can take them round the world without a visa. They are privileged even while homeless. The guy filming is obviously not homeless, and you too will not be.

Let's leave the salary for a moment.

That guy is not your regular software engineer. He's among the top 5% in the tech field. Just take a look at the companies he got offers from and their various salaries

A lot of people with twice the years of experience he has will not be able to command such an high salary.

Be it tech or any other industry you're in, you would be able to greatly monetize your skill and get very high financial reward once you're exceptional in your field. And being exceptional comes with an extensive period of intense hardwork and dedication.

Tech is the new oil, Yes, but don't go and run into it thinking you would be commanding 6-7figure salary within 1/2 years as a mediocre SWE

So, the correct version of your sentence should be: "A university graduate typed this episode with a lot of uncoordinated sentences."

@op

So how did you go about withdrawing your money in upwork?

Did you use the payoneer route? What was the exchange rate?
I'm currently working on a project for a client, I'm trying to set up the payment method. I don't have a dorm account, they said payoneer is the best, but I don't know the exchange rate... Someone said upwork still pay with the old exchange rate value, around #395, which is a big loss compared with the black Market exchange rate.

So pls, share helpful tips regarding the best way to go about receiving payments on upwork if you've successfully received yours. Thanks

That is not correct. Why not open a Payoneer account and link to your Upwork profile. Get your money in USD and transfer to Payoneer. You can then use peer to peer or connect your dom account to Payoneer for withdrawal

Thank you very much, I really appreciate this.

I've created a payoneer account. I'll link it to my upwork profile as soon as possible. But I don't have a dorm account at the moment. Can you pls give me an hint on how I'll go about the peer to peer withdrawal method you just mentioned. I have no idea about it. Thanks

I'm currently working on my first writing project for a client on upwork. Though the work is still in progress, I'm trying to set up the mode of payment that would be used after the work has been completed.

But this is the issue:

A successful freelancer on upwork, also a Nigerian told me that upwork pays based on the old exchange rate which is somewhat around #380-#395.
If this is true, then it's a really big loss as a dollar is currently about #600 or thereabout.

For those who have had success working on upwork, how true is this?
If this is true, is there anyway to bypass this and get paid the current dollar to naira exchange rate?

I plan using payoneer.
I would really appreciate your inputs guys.

You are a weak man, and weakness is not virtuous, weakness is weakness. A chicken is not virtuous, it can only be eaten against its wish, but a Tiger is virtuous, hence no one dares to mess with it. Be like a martial artist, that you are capable of destroying the whole damn place but chose not to unless your red line is crossed. Most importantly, you should live your life in a way that it is clear to everyone that being good is not the only method you use to relate with them, but you can be cruel as well. It is called having a backbone.

It is a natural law. The scientist calls it ''cause and effect'', the metaphysical calls it karma, Christians call it heaven and hell, or as Psquare colloquially puts it, ''do me I do you''. She is doing you, and you can't do anything, so why will she stop? you are easy, like a chicken, you will be eaten against your wish and all you do is shout and beg, and ask for help, instead of transform into a tiger and destroy the whole damn place.

The fact your wife could do this, and you come online to ask questions already gave me a clear impression about your kind of man, and the strength and extent of your backbone. There are men that will never suffer this kind of humiliation because their woman would have already sized him up and knew for sure that the marriage is over if she try such nonsense. My advice would be to find your strength, and it is by being financially independent.

Virtue is proven during times of hardship, not abundance. Any idiot can say "I do'' when money is in abundance, but in the absence of it, you get to know who you truly married. The lack of finance has already exposed who your wife is to you, so instead of thinking she will change back to being good, you may just thank your God that he has used this period of hardship to reveal the character of whom you married. I won't tell you what to do, because I will be too radical, but just realise you do not have a wive.
