China is a police state. People are routinely arrested, imprisoned, tortured mercilessly and executed for expressing 'wrong' views or being members of organizations that were banned simply because they got popular.

I'll try to get an original copy of the report. it's possible that it has been misquoted.

6) To understand a market you need to be involved in it or interact with those who are.
RomanceRe: He Threatened To 'Smash My Face'. Did He Really Mean It? by Seun(mod): 4:46pm On May 03, 2006
Ok, this is a really big problem. Let us first attempt to work through it logically.

If your boyfriend has a criminal past, that means he has done worse things than just hitting a woman. In other words, his threat to beat you is not empty - he can even do worse than that. Now let that sink in. If the argument you had on phone was a face-to-face argument, he would indeed have smashed your face. Meditate on that.

You need to break up with him as soon as possible, but you also need to be careful about how you go about it.

This relationship of yours is a threat to your security, the security of your family, and the security of your future boyfriends. You need to go to those professional centers were they advice battered women and ask them how you can break up with your boyfriend without anyone getting hurt. They will be able to help.

I understand that you love him, and I'm sorry that you have to dump him, but your safety matters more to us.

International rankings do not matter to me. What matters more is what we experiencing as a Nigerians living in Nigeria. It's better to listen the common man's experience than to random international agencies.

RomanceRe: The Tell-tale Sign Of Low Self-esteem Women! by Seun(mod): 3:07am On May 03, 2006
Suppose I say, "if you see a brown woman, or a brown woman, or a light brown woman, this is a symptom of low skin whiteness". What have I achieved by grouping these 'problems' together and giving them a new name? Nothing.

Personally, I don't alow people to label me with vague, stupid terms. When I say "I'm not a Christian" people quickly want to categorize me into predefined categories so they can know which form of prejudice to manifest towards me. "Are you an atheist?" "are you a muslim?" "what do you believe in?". I always answer them in a way that prevents them from enjoying the cheap satisfaction of stamping an 'inferior' label on me.

What I am saying is that if you tell a friend of mine "you have low self-esteem", I will hunt you down and give you a devastating piece of my mind. By the time I'm finished, you would also be out of 'self esteem'. If someone is self-confident she's arrogant. If she's humble, she lacks self-esteem. Self-esteem ko, self esteem ni!

UPDATE: I don't necessarily know what I'm saying, but I know what I'm feeling. Free: apologies.

BusinessProblem of PHCN/NEPA: Price Of Electricity Is Too Low by Seun(mod): 10:52pm On May 02, 2006
The problem of PHCN is that their tariffs are too low. This leads to excess demand for electricity that they can't satisfy. Even if they double their output, it will only lead to more demand, which will cause the shortage to continue.

According to elementary economics, an increase in price causes demand to fall. If PHCN can increase the tariff by 100%-400%, then people will start looking for ways to save power. People will start switching off bulbs and their television sets when they are not watching. Many people will choose fans with low power consumption over air-conditioning units. Soon after the tariff increase , the demand for electricity would have fallen to a level that PHCN can adequately supply!

At this stage, Businesses that are willing to pay more for power - because it'll still cheaper than using a generator - will have 24 hours power supply while those who can't will at least not have to put up with their rich neighbours' noisy generators in addition to the heat and mosquitos they have to put up with when 'PHCN' strikes!

If you've noticed, there's a reluctance on the part of investors to go into electricity generation in Nigeria. This is because, due to the amount of investment involved and the current price levels, it will be very hard to make a profit. When the general price level for electricity is increased by PHCN/NEPA, investors will rush in to the market.

Through competition the prices will eventually be driven back down to what we are paying today, but the difference will be that electricity will be available to anyone that is willing to pay a small amount for it. There will no such thing as shortage in a flexible and fair electricity market, or what do you think?

FamilyRe: I'm A Married Man. What To Do About A Nagging Mother? by Seun(mod): 10:10pm On May 02, 2006
Are you sure that you're a man? You better send your mum away before she destroys your marriage!

From the bottom of my heart I am begging you to tell her to leave the two of you. if she has come to help, then she must be helpful. if she's bringing you help instead of help then you should let her leave and get a grown maid who would give your wife and mother of your child the proper respect.

If you can't do that, I pity your wife. Poor woman. Please be a man and take this definite step.

PoliticsRe: CBN Bill Bans Spraying Of Naira Notes by Seun(mod): 9:23pm On May 02, 2006
A coin or note shall be deemed to have been tampered with if the coin or note has been impaired, diminished or lightened otherwise than by fair wear and tear or has been defaced by stumping, engraving, mutilating, piercing, stapling, writing, tearing, soiling, squeezing or any other form of deliberate and willful abuse whether the coin or note has or has not been thereby diminished or lightened.

"For the avoidance of doubt, spraying of, dancing or marching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under subsection (1) of this section.

"It shall also be an offence punishable under subsection (1) of this section for any person to hawk, sell or otherwise trade in the naira note or any other note issued by the Bank."

Left to me, any laws that are not absolutely necessary should be prevented from being passed because once the law is passed it would be difficult to change it if it is found to have unintended consequences. However, I am happy about the part that says the penalty only applies to wilful abuse. So if I naira note mistakenly gets torn in my hands, I'm not going to prison for it. Thank goodness!

Well, I can do it. Why not? of course, there must be a reason.

And babymine, don't give me that "submission" line. We are not all disciples of Apostle Paul. An enterprising woman is more appealing than a nagging doormat.

Is it love? No, it's just 21st century pragmatism. Male superiority complex is now unfashionable.

PoliticsRe: CBN Bill Bans Spraying Of Naira Notes by Seun(mod): 4:14pm On May 02, 2006
<sarcasm>
This is a brilliant plan the CBN Governor to promote e-payment in Nigeria!If the bill is passed, then people will be afraid of naira notes and they will embrace e-payment instead - since they can't be sent to jail for making a mistake with their debit cards. For mishandling a 10 naira note, you might spend 5 years awaiting trial. Brilliant!
</sarcasm>

I hate unecessary laws, moreso in a country that lacks the capability to effectively enforce more essential laws that already exist. This is not just a ban on spraying of notes, it's much more and it's very terrible.
