MhisTahrah:So sorry for the late response, I just got back from the clinic. Although you didn't tell me the specie of your pet, I want to assume its a dog. There are several methods of treating mange (mange is caused by an ectoparasite, the same that specie that causes scabies in humans) which has been reported to be effective. Some include local methods like application of oil (coconut or palm oil) to the affected area or the use of neem tree (dogo yaro) leaf extracts to bath your pet. The above methods are cheap, reportedly effective with little or no side effects, but don't have scientific validity. The scientifically valid methods include; the use of cypermetrin (my personal method) or armitraz to bath your pet after diluting it in water (please follow the procedure on the drug leaflet). Although some Vets prescribe Ivermectin, the side effects are not favorable at all. So I'll advice you get armitraz or cypermetrin and follow the instructions on the leaflets under the guidance of a vet if available. Please feel free to ask any further question if you aren't satisfied and also try to update us on any progress made. |
femekpe:You are always welcome sir |
Ebi89:I'm so sorry ma for the late response. Did the Veterinarian tell you what was wrong with your dog? although I suspect Parvo. What I think is that your dog is reacting adversely to the gentalak medication since some of it side effect include nausea and vomiting. So I'll advice you go back to the Vet. Please feel free to ask any further question if your are not satisfied and update us on the the progress made. |

chinwezdasilva:Correct |
chinwezdasilva:lolzzzzz, no mind am. Body wey don dey drop since April wey dem no record am. |
heykims:Sincerely I agree with you, especially the last part "100 thousand" but as a health professional myself, I can say we might have peaked without knowing for the following reasons 1) The only way we can know if cases are rising, peaking or declining is by testing which will give you an assessment of those with the diseases at a point in time. If you don't have capacity to sufficiently test you won't be able to compare data to know your true status. Let me give you an instance. If our testing capacity as at April was 10 million tests per month (we would see as much as 100 thousand cases) but if by June it reduces to 10 thousand test per month (we would see about 1 thousand cases or at most 10 thousand cases). To a layman it would seem as if the case had dropped or we peaked at April but to learned people like the both of us we would know its false, because its all based on testing capacity. 2) Another way to know if we have peaked or not, is through mortality rate (death rate). Unfortunately that can't work for us either, because most deaths in Nigeria are under recorded especially in the North and the mortality rate for COVID 19 in Africa, is very low for any reasonable correlation to be made. For example in Italy, even without adequate testing they can know if they have peaked or not using the death rate observed in that country. 3) Taking into consideration that many Nigerians did not observe many of these safety precautions especially in the North it is possible that maximum community transmission may have been ongoing all through this period , for example a place like Sokoto where I reside, throughout this lockdown period life was almost normal with people coming in and going out, no face mask or social distancing etc, so I stand to say that we could have peaked without knowing. But as usual I stand to be corrected..!!!! |
heykims:But sir, how would we know if Nigeria has peaked or not, when we don't have sufficient testing capabilities. We could have peaked and we won't even know, because this social distancing, face mask bla bla bla in many places weren't fully observed...!!!! |
CrazyCrane:I'm so sorry for your loss, I'll be advising you professionally as a veterinarian so to prevent further losses. First of all, I must be candid with you, vaccines are not 100% reliable in preventing parvo (for reasons to be discussed another day), in most of the parvo cases I have handled, the owners showed evidence of vaccination from reputable sources. Some of the precautions you can take include some already stated in this thread which are; breed selection (some dog breeds are more susceptible to parvo than others), Know the season of the year when parvo is prevalent which is usually wet season June/July downwards (in the north). During this season be extra careful on what your dog eats and more emphasis should be laid on hygiene during this period, Also during this period give feed rich in vitamins and also give multivitamins supplements in order to boost the dog's immune system. The truth is that PARVOVIRUS ENTERITIS is self limiting (it goes by itself) and its NOT CURABLE (Like common cold), you can only manage the symptoms till the virus runs it course, that is why the standard practise of most veterinarians is to administer fluid therapy (to mange fluid losses from vomiting and diarrhea) and antibiotics (for secondary bacterial infection). I hope I've been able to assist I'm my own little way. If you have any further question, you can follow this link "Ask a veterinarian" on nairaland hopefully you questions would be elaborated on....!!! |

goldensoul55:Because hardly would you find a Muslim post an insulting or derogatory comments on a Christian thread or maliciously attempt to derail it. My dear brother, quickly examine this thread from page 1 to 2, did you find any Muslim post any malicious comment? Now compare it with the usual friday Muslim threads or even today's thread created to wish Muslims "Happy Salah" and see what your brothers are doing, you would surely see the difference..!!! |
I remembered one case, around 2013 when I was handling a sensitive course for final year students. I personally usually made my course ridiculously easy so as to avoid these kind of rubbish. Fast forward to after their exams, that was when the deputy HOD called me and gave me 3 lists, the first one was the faculty list, second one was the HOD's list and the last, his own personal list. Luckily for me, been that the exam was ridiculously easy majority of those in the list passed my course without any assistance except for one girl like that. Merely seeing her you will know she is a runs girl because I had even caught her at night bribing the school security official at night while smuggling out of the school. When I checked her script, I saw she scored 9/70 in exam and her CA was around 10/30. I then told the deputy HOD that his request wasn't possible because even if I gave the girl 30/30 in CA (which is suspicious), 30 plus 9 is still 39 which is still F, and remember in tertiary institutions you don't keep exam scripts rather you return to the school hence cannot be easily manipulated because in future it can be vetted. Long story short, the man insisted I gave her at least C which I declined and that created bad blood between us. Its point of note that this man in now the HOD so you can imagine the rest of the story.....!!!! |
same here |
SenecaTheYonger:God bless, I was still discussing this with my wife. This lock down won't achieve much, because it is partial, only a full lockdown can achieve a significant impact which is impracticable even in advanced countries. As you've said, enforcement of face mask would go a long way, also increasing the isolation centers and encourage private sector participation in covid treatment (ie what they do in Yaba that leads to the recovery we see daily), and finally decongestion. If not if this lockdown extends more than a month, the casualties we would see may even be higher than those killed by the disease itself. BTW, do you know some people actually fall sick due to boredom. I mean sick like seriously sick!!!! |
KingAzubuike:My friend, you don't have an idea of what those who are infected with corona virus go through before they finally pack up or manage to survive. |
NyenwePHC:Thanks so much for the advice, even though I've moved on, the MPH alternative has also been blocked by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. Now its only medically qualified persons (Medical doctors and Dentist) can apply for MPH. The only alternative for other professions is a program called MSc PH (Master of Science in Public Health). Although some schools still do MPH for every professions, its gradually reducing. |
VeeVeeMyLuv:God bless you my brother, I've moved on, I'm now a veterinarian and happy that my new profession has no squabbles with human Drs since we aren't in the same parastatal and there is limited interference from other professions based on the uniqueness of the veterinary profession. But remember what our elders say, that "a river which forgets its source would soon run dry". BSc Anatomy is my first profession and although I'm a veterinarian in body, a part of my heart still goes to my first profession which is Anatomy. That is why I still attend Anatomy conferences and from what I've seen so far, gradually efforts and progress are been made (I can't discuss the progresses made so far on a public domain except via inbox), and that was why I made this post so that the public can identify with our plight and create awareness |
Zeeknow3245:You can say that again my brother, they should always remember that its not everyone that can be medical drs, others professions should be given space to reach their full potential |
It is no secret that in the health sector, Bsc Anatomy/Physiology is the least lucrative amongst all other programs offered by the College of Health Sciences. Most often, students given admission to study any of the above courses immediately do a change of course to other departments and when not possible write another JAMB, while some would go through the agony of studying the above courses and immediately after the program obtain a direct entry form to other departments. That above is the current state of our basic medical sciences degree programs in Nigeria. The question now that would be on the mind of everyone is; “was it always like this” and if not “what when wrong”. But before I answer this question, I will like to share a historical perspective on how these programs came into existence in Nigeria with special focus on BSc Anatomy, which is my course of study and in which I have been a member of the Anatomical Society for about 12 years from my student days till date. Historically, the BSc Anatomy/Physiology program was born out of the need to provide lecturers and instructors to medical students in our medical schools at that time when there was shortage of medical doctors and even fewer numbers desired to go back to medical schools to lecture the basic medical sciences, hence these programs (BSc Anatomy/Physiology) were born. As advances in science and research came, these programs became wider and broader hence covered not only teaching medical students but also other aspects of research and health. Fast forward to about few years back, suddenly the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria came out with a circular to disengage all non medically qualified anatomist/physiologist (Anatomist/Physiologist that are not medical doctors) from teaching medical students in all medical schools in Nigeria, although they have been mulling the idea prior to then. The reason the MDCN gave was that non medically qualified anatomist/physiologist lacked the basic clinical skills to teach medical students since they aren't medical doctors and may emphasize on what the students may not need when they get to clinical class. Although the above may sound plausible, but it begs a lot of questions; 1) Can't the medical student syllabus be modified to accommodate these deficiencies? 2) Even if the medical syllabus has been modified, and was found out that the non medically qualified lecturers still don’t have the required skills, can’t the BSc anatomy/physiology syllabus be modified to correct the deficiencies? and Lastly when did the MDCN start realizing the above deficiencies, because the non medically qualified anatomist/physiologists I know have been producing very sound doctors for more than 30 years till date and our doctors are doing very well globally. Now for the sake of argument, lets concede that only medically qualified basic medical sciences lecturers should teach medical students. No problem. Since constitutionally the law empowers the MDCN in conjunction with the NUC determine the standard of the courses medical students are to study and the lecturers who are to lecture such courses. But what was vexatious, was the attempt to completely disengage non medically qualified basic medical science lecturer from even becoming faculty members and even becoming HODs, it now a common sight to see in job vacancies for basic medical science lecturers, things like “Msc or PhD and the applicant must be medically qualified (must possess MBBS)”. This to us is injustice not forgetting the fact that its not only medical students that offer anatomy and physiology. Bsc Anatomy, Bsc Physiology, Bsc Pharmaclogy, Pharmacy, Medical Lab Science, Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Optometry also offer anatomy and physiology. Our question is? Do the above programs also require a medically qualified lecturers to teach those programs too? And moreover is it also the MDCN that would also determine their standard too? All these beg for answers. In conclusion, we are appealing to the appropriate bodies and stakeholders to look into this issue fairly and sincerely and bring solutions that would be for the betterment of party involved. They should remember that all of us cannot be medical doctors hence should provide a niche where other professions can thrive. Currently the employability of these basic medical sciences programs are low due to the fact that Nigeria is not really a research oriented country and the only seeming hope is lecturing, attempting to take that away for no just reason, I believe would further exacerbate the current condition. |
spoilerx:If I remember correctly, it was "Rugged and deen" that was inscribed, and I think also "jaws, enzo". May it was changed after we left or was like that before we came!!!! |
benedum:I'm very grateful for the suggestion sir, I will do so once I get a substantial amount of participants on this thread. Thanks once again for the suggestion, and any other suggestion is highly welcomed. |
Hi guys, this thread was created to answer any question relating to your animal health, be it pets or livestock and also enlighten the public about the veterinary profession generally especially for those seeking a career in the veterinary profession. Please feel free to send your questions and hopefully you will get your answers asap. Occasionally we would invite senior consultants to shed light on knotty issues. Thank you |

Moura7:Confirmed, when you shatter a girl's self esteem, you can do and undo, believe you me I've seen worse cases than above in fact you will call the girl "super mumu", but you see, when a girl's self esteem has been destroyed, its all over, how do you think boko haram convince all those girls to do crazy things? They first of all destroy their self esteem buy making them engage in degrading acts, at that point in time, they would now see themselves as a nobody hence easy tool, In fact they are some guys whose stock of trade is that; they lure young girls into despicable act, destroy their self esteem then turn them to sex slaves. In the case I'm handling I had to always tell her she is beautiful & intelligent and even tweaked her result a bit to buttress the above, its recently I started seeing progress. So my friend many things are happening, we should just pray none of our loved ones fall victim. !!! |
Good morning ma, I've been an active reader in the literature section, but this is the first time I'll ever comment, because this is the best story I've ever read, for it seem real and graphic and one could relate to it. Please when you are done I'll like you to convert it to PDF, for a lot of young girls out there needs to read this. I'm a lecturer and I have seen a lot of these cases (the one i have on ground is similar but instead a married man !!). I'll personally share it on my student's whatzapp group for broader coverage. More ink to your pen !!! |
Let me first of all state here, that I'm a neutral observer (Veterinarian). And I will use our veterinary model as a guide in this piece. It is not a hidden secret that more than 50% of vets in Nigeria actually wanted to study MBBS, but later found themselves in vet school. However, one good thing is that in vet school, they immediately orientate you that you are a vet doctor and not a human doctor and inasmuch as there are enormous similarities with what a MBBS student and Vet student does "YOU ARE NOT LICENSED TO TREAT A HUMAN" and also in the sight of the law the intervention a vet is licensed to give a human accident victim is NOT different from that of a lawyer, banker or engineer even though the vet has far more knowledge of what to do than the above. The reasons why they give us the above orientation is in order to avoid the mistake the OP is making. My dear OP, dentistry is a prestigious course, that's why the prefix "Dr" in front of your name and the fact that in civil service you start from GL 12 just 4 ranks to be perm sec which goes a long way in showing how prestigious your course is. But trying to identify your profession with MBBS as very similar or the same thing is injurious to the integrity of your profession. It should be noted however that as a dentist you have the right to be referred to as a medical doctor and even refer to your school as medical school but that would be misleading to the common man (that is the qualms you are having with your MBBS counterparts on this thread). I would advice next time that whenever you want to make reference to your profession, strictly indicate that you're a dentist (God willing a renowned dentist) from the beginning and all through, references should be made to that fact. I for one always refer to myself as a veterinarian not a "doctor" although I'm legally allowed to do so, but if I do so, that will be misleading to a lot of people which will be unethical and degrading to my profession. |
helinues:Wallahi, at a point in time I didn't even know her party self, while we youths kill ourselves over them!!!! |
Oblongata:But sir what if APC decides to field a southerner and also decide to play the religious card i.e its time for Christians to rule having having a Muslim president for 8 years. Won't it count sir? |
