Sorry, I'm a green horn at that. I would do better if you were in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences.

IyaTola:
For HRMs, MDs, CEOs, MANAGERS,

DISCONTINUE, AMEND or CONTINUE

We are often shaped by our experiences and background and this later forms how we do things or conduct ourselves.

In the work place, most often than not, you either propagate what you have learnt as policies or culture and transpose it to a new place.

You see nothing wrong except your subconscious or someone calls your attention to a better way of doing things.

I had worked in an organization for about 7 years and the policy was to pay salary on the last day (30th or 31st of every month), festive period inclusive.

Started my organization about 5 years ago, adopted same policy among others..

My HR Generalist called my attention to paying salary on or before December 22nd instead of Dec 24th I was like what’s changed?

Where i am coming from, what law court would we have gone to, to tell “oga patapata” at the top that we want salaries before Dec 25th.

I can’t even imagine anyone having the audacity to go and meet him but all the same policies are not cast in stone.

I asked myself the following questions:

What could go wrong if salaries were paid before Dec 22nd?

Was the salary budgeted for or not and is it readily available?

What could go wrong if salary day is changed to meet employees expectation?

Would i lose anything except the fact that some Japarians may not work till end of the month?

Would the company survive if policy is changed?

Guess what, the policy was changed and salaries got paid on Dec 21st.

As an HR manager, CEO/ MD or head of team, what is that Policy or Process that needs to change in 2023?

What is that culture that needs a revamping that your team has been complaining about?

Can i beg you to change, discontinue or alter this in the Spirit of Christmas for your employees.

Don’t propagate unfriendly policies.
Don’t practice old habit in the new year.
Be open minded for new perspectives.
Boost employee engagement.
Create a work environment where employees look forward to coming each day and give their best.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: 7 Offensive Things Employers Do by Sisib15: 8:35pm On Jan 11, 2023
No 5 is the most and expecting people to work overtime without pay
QuinModah:
7 things employers do that give me the ick.

1. Make people work overtime without pay.
2. Expect 'business dress' for no actual reason.
3. Host 'lads lads lads' type of socials.
4. Base promotions on company loyalty.
5. Pay interns with 'experience' - not money.
6. Give their team those clunky 2000s Dell laptops cry
7. Choose to use MS Teams over Zoom (#notokay)

Apparently, there are 57 MILLION companies in Africa and by extension 500,000 in Nigeria .

Add your icks below so employers get the message.

The more brutal the better I say wink

Don't be. You can still post your questions and get good responses. Nevertheless, everyone should be calming down.

I thought this was a gbas gbos thread THAT was still a place where I could gain or learn something. I guess I was wrong about that and it's mostly just for transcript sharing.

You can drop your transcript so that the elders can help look at it, so you won't make the same mistake next time.

Hello Everyone! Please my spring semester Visa appointment was denied in Lagos consulate on 29th December 2022 but my school has moved my admission to fall semester and I'm to resume on August. The promised to send me a new I 20 on mid February for me to reapply for visa but I'm confused if I should go to another consulate (Abuja) or should I still go back to the Lagos consulate where I was denied my first visa application.
Pls I need your help.

Hello, i don't think you understand why he's asking these questions. You should have patiently give him a response before insulting him. From what i have read so far, to self _fund your academics can be very stressful and frustrating if you don't havr any other means of income and also the possibility of getting you visa may be on probability considering all these factors.

And regarding the appointment date, i think you will need to do the search yourself or you can pay someone to get it for you if you can't search.
In all of it, let no be too quick to insult other people

Hello everyone,

A school I applied to asked me to send my passport bio data page before they can review my application. However, the problem is that my passport has expired and i have requested for the renewal since August.
Please how do I respond to the mail so that the school can start reviewing my application.

TW, I have been going through the previous threads and I must those threads are rich unlike now all information are and transcript is on WhatsApp group.
TWoods:
The utility of this thread has diminished over time. It used to be populated by highly motivated, industrious folks who were diligently looking to school outside Nigeria. Today it’s mostly lazy folks who want you to do the search for them and tell them what to say. As soon as they get “their” visa, they disappear.

Which brings me to the end of my story!

PS: My intention with this thread is not precisely to educate, there are so many threads on Nairaland that already do justice to the US Study abroad topic. But if you are a good reader, I am sure you must have gotten some valid information here.

I thought to share my story, in hopes that it encourages someone who plans to pursue an undergraduate/graduate program abroad especially in the USA.

Be strategic, start early, and have faith in God!

It's December 2022, and I have successfully completed my first semester.

It has been new, crazy (good crazy), and different. The educational system abroad is very different. Everything here is different. The opportunities I have enjoyed so far and the US system leaves me with a number of culture shocks.

It's like starting all over again, or being given a second chance to make your life what you want from it in a system that is supportive and cares about your growth.

All in all, I am happy I made the move. I am so grateful to God because honestly if it were based on my grades, or whatever else. I wouldn't be here. Which makes it a testimony!

Thank you for staying with me! (Big Smile)

You should do the evaluation of your transcript. WES evaluation will suffice.

tiaraLOVE:
Hmm..where do I begin?

This is more of a testimony than a story. But somehow, I hope it encourages someone out there.

It's December. The end of the year 2022.

I cannot help but look back with gratitude in my heart. Iremember when I was planning, praying and working for everything I have now. I never even thought I would get here, I just believed for it.

It all started in 2020, Canada express entry was a huge rave and every professional seemed to be preparing to Japa to Canada. I just started working the previous year, straight out of NYSC, and had barely even started my career. I knew I wanted to relocate out of Nigeria but I didn't know how.

Right from when I was in undergrad, I always nursed the ambition to pursue a masters abroad. However, I never knew how to go about it. To make matters "worse", I graduated with a 2.2, so technically I was out of the scholarship range. Every scholarship requirement had the, " Must have a first class or 2.1 and exhibit great leadership qualities" bla la blue

I just gave up abeg. Next thing I blinked and almost 5 years was gone.

Anyways, back to the story.

So, I was working but still continued to nurse that ambition to travel abroad.

Canada was on my mind because it sounded like the perfect way to go. However, I didn't have a masters and everytime I checked my crs score, omo, it was not encouraging. Next thing, the pandemic hit and the world was on lockdown.

2020 was one of the most depressing year in my life. I was working from home, working a job I didnt enjoy. A job I wasn't well compensated or appreciated for despite my efforts. I was working from mainland to island 5 days a week, I will leave before dawn and return at dusk. Lagos traffic showed me shege

I was already loosing it before the pandemic struck and I started working remotely.

You know that feeling of being stuck? When you're just working for the pay and nothing else. That was my life.

Oh well, my mum started encouraging me to find "scholarship opportunities" to study abroad. At that point I was like, It's really time to get serious about this. I am emotionally downcast at this point.

I want to pause and say that information is power. Knowledge is key. What you don't know, you don't know. But if you want to know, you will know!

Back to my story.

In 2020, I made the decision to start working towards my study abroad plans. I stumbled upon some amazing Nigerians on twitter who were studying abroad- US, Canada, Europe. I started following them all, I started researching, watching youtube videos, I was soaking up all the free information online.

One particular tweet opened my eyes to the possibilities of studying abroad and that activated a fire in me, and gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams.

A particular lady on twitter, Ann on Demand, once said that despite finishing from school with a 2.2 she was able to further her studies in the US, fully funded and now a professor teaching in a school in the States.

I started gathering all the information I needed, researching schools and their requirements. I already knew the program I wanted to pursue which was in line with my career, and I started actively following all the japa/study abroad gang on twitter. The way I used to unwrap, unroll and dissect threads then ehn. I left no stone unturned seeking for relevant knowledge. I had a notebook for schools, deadlines, requirements, checklists. True true, if you don't read or like googling things, a lot of information will be hidden to you.

Towards the end of 2020, I had most of the information I needed, and I knew I was ready to set the ball rolling. I took my first step..

To be Continued soon.

I did o. Some people are just difficult even the one i used as a professional one said it is stressful and he can't send again.

Now, i have taken your advice i have changed that one. The remaining one is this prof and the problem with him is because i don't know any other prof except him.
chibertha:
You would have told him you got application waiver for attending open days.

I applied to plenty schools so he just did like 4 and was asking how did i get money to Apply to all those schools
Dreamsss:
It's so strange and sad how people can comfortably bilk someone trying to make a headway in life. Maybe he's a professor, so what? As you hear America, so the next thing is to kill the person? So sad really.

When I asked my own lecturer for the sake of just adding one academic recommender, as my way to say thank you, I offered to send recharge card and before I said jack, he was sending account number. I just laughed, say na you know and still went ahead to send the 5k that I originally wanted to send. He did not acknowledge and me, I did not say nada. Didn't think I needed to. After that, I still inboxed him to goan do supplemental application, by way of 'extending the good he has started"..lol. He wasted time..so I went and dropped another message and I was like; I would not know if you have completed the recommendation because my right is waived, but I want to let you know that I'm grateful. Only him waited for two weeks and went to complete it.

If not that we're trying to do things properly sef, I know someone with a gmail-owning recommender..and he get full funding ontop am.

Stay at home and earn more
dipset01:
Guys is migrating to canada worth it? God is faithful I am currently 34years working in as an IT professional in a FCMG organization, currently earn 1.1m monthly this is excluding the perks, my wife who is currently 28 years also earns about 700k monthly. We both have siblings in Canada and both have UK masters degree. I know if my wife applies for PR and does well in IETLS we have a high chance of being invited. We have started the WES process and will soon sit for IELTS.
I never use to believe in the whole Japa thing, infact I get irritated when I see people traveling out, until this year when dollar became over 800 to a Naira, also my colleague at work was recently kidnapped and killed recently. Coupled with the epileptic power supply and frustration naija gives you in so many way(traffic in lagos, passport processing fustration etc). The whole thing is kinda of tiring.

I know every land has its own challenges, like the cold, racism, Job hunting and the starting again whahala, but to be candor is it worth it.

My younger brother is telling me to come over that there are more chances in Canada.

What do you guys think, is Canada really worth it?
