Business › Re: Will Nigerian Banks Ever Start Issuing Credit Cards? by SmartMugu: 6:52am On May 13, 2016*. Modified: 7:12am On May 13, 2016 |
With the current state Nigeria is in, credit opportunities will not work in that system - except may be for a select few, but yet it won't be same as in sane countries.
The reason is simple. The US for example has a unique identifier for everybody living there legally - Social Security Number (SSN). Nigeria doesnt. With the SSN, everything else can be linked - your properties, debts, equities, family members, criminal history, insurance records, census reasons etc.
Every business in the US (an example) can decide if you are credit-worthy once they look through your past records from your SSN. Banks, financial firms, employers, etc and rely on that to make informed decisions.
If it took forever for Nigeria to think about BVN, how much longer would it take to implement something close to SSN that the US uses? Unless BVN will be used to represent SSN. But what about people that don't have bank accounts and don't need BVN?
The right approach would be to have a unique number assigned to every citizen in Nigeria, even babies. From that, everything else can be done. I thought that was the whole reason for the National ID card, until...
So, I won't blame banks if they don't think Nigeria is ripe for that yet. Like everyone, they don't want to lose money from people fleeing with funds they borrowed. The right system has to be put in place to establish a confidence level for them. |

SleekAboki: If you visit the creeks and see living conditions, you would pick up arms and fight against such injustice. I have lived in the creeks of Bayelsa before for 9 months, that was about 15 years ago. I understand the area is not what it should be - it deserves to be way better. I also understand that only a few gets whatever help comes from FG and the oil companies in those areas. Wealth there simply don't circulate. |

SleekAboki: The Niger Delta is the darling and life blood of Nigeria. I wonder why buhari and APC failed to toast, win and dazzle her with romances? These people deserve much more respect than they are getting. Let justice be done.Life in the creeks is not even ideal for human habitation yet, tinubu and co sit down in their posh offices and sipping Niger Delta oil through oando. This is an insult and a grave injustice that must be addressed. If only you have an idea of how long these Niger-Delta youths have been complaining. Certain people are just impossible to please. Even if the FG and oil companies give billions to them (certainly through their leaders) monthly, it still won't satisfy them because their leaders hold on to most of it and still leave the others hungry. That's how deep curruption has gotten. I don't believe oil companies and the FG isn't doing their best to satisfy these people, but is it getting to the needy in this region? |

Career › Re: Would You Quit Your Current Job To Become A Farmer If It Paid More? by SmartMugu: 6:22am On May 06, 2016 |
I don't have a problem with owning and managing my farm, but definitely not to work for someone as a farmer on their farms.
Farming is a great business, especially with mechanized equipment. Some farmers have deals with large firms that require raw materials like rubber, cocoa etc and end up with good ROI.
You can be a farmer and never have to touch hoes and cutlasses nor look dirty after work if that's what people don't like. Besides, lifestock is still considered farming, isn't it? I think breeding animals should be fun. |
