Please guys, this is urgent. I was just about to book an appointment in Lagos for a B1/B2 visa and to my surprise I'm finding that the earliest appointment is August 14 shocked I haven't paid the $160 yet but is there anyway I can get earlier dates? If I proceed with the payment would it automatically accept August 14 and onward dates?
* I have a DS-160 confirmation number already with Lagos as preferred post.

I know scholastica16 has earned legendary status here as a prime contributor to this thread but if we are being honest, he started with the low blows and continued with the insults. Am I surprised that nobody called him out on repeated use of abrasive words, or even editing someone else's comment to one that is insulting? Not in the slightest or are we not nigerians again? grin cheesy

We should argue to learn, not to win. There is no shame in not having all the information on a subject. Let us drop the ego, it doesn't help anybody.

Bracelum gave a very fine and elaborate answer to the question and I'm sure the OP is properly guided.

By the way, there is seldom anyone that would ask for GMAT that, in its absence, wouldn't ask for the GRE or wouldn't state a preference for one over the other. Prior to the reposted comment by CuteRedd, a lot of us didn't know that these high-blood-pressure tests could still come again to haunt God's children, but it is well. Take the tests and pass it very well (note to self)

user4321:
So I wrote my GRE Today,
For a little back story, I just graduated a little over three months ago, and got a job immediately as a software engineer, at a fast moving company, with periodic crazy deadlines. So, I had to squeeze in time during mornings at nights to prepare, and learn as much vocabulary as I could.
Fast forward to test Day, I arrived at Dragnet prometric 2 hours before the test, did a quick review, and was first on the line. Got the quant section first, let's just say, it was deadlier than I thought, too many geometry problems, and i loathe euclidean circle geometry a lot. I moved on to the verbal; few mistakes here and there, but I just basically free styled.
At the end of the test, I was assured that I had done very terribly, and was superbly afraid to click "report scores". Then I clicked
QUANTITATIVE - 163
VERBAL - 161
TOTAL - 324

I feel i did terrible in the quant, as i focused too much on the verbal during prep, but I hope to never write GRE ever again, I accept my 324 "laidat".
Profile
Bsc. Electrical and Electronics Engineering
GPA - 4.74/5
WES (UNOFFICIAL) 3.82/4.0
GRE - 324 ( Q-163 V-161)
SCHOOLS
STANFORD UNIVERSITY -PHD
UT AUSTIN - PHD
RICE - PHD
CMU AFRICA - MSC
These are very good scores by any standard. If you feel like you can do better go for it, if not it's alright. You should mix your choice schools a bit, add more 'safe' schools if you can afford the extra fees to avoid stories that touch, if you've read on this thread about the first class-highest-departmental-GPA-ever guy who got into Tufts uni, you'd get the drift. Since you're gunning for a PhD, you should know that many accepted international students have masters degrees with additional research experience + publications. Look up linkedin for profiles of accepted international PhD students at your choice universities to spot the pattern.

Overall great scores, good luck and hope you get in.

Thanks a lot grin I think the second option appears workable for me as I would be relocating later this year and likely won't be around to begin and follow through my PR from here.

Thanks again.
Jennypharb1:
This one is one chance o. She has to come back and pay groom price on your head before you can get PR now. grin I kid

In my opinion you have three options
- if you guys were to get married now, she can apply to add you to her application. A number of people have done it, some have gotten pr, others are still in the process

- However, since the application is already in progress, and a wedding is not possible for now, you may have to wait until you're legally married then she can sponsor your own application once hers is complete.

- Or you can take steps to start your own pr process from here

These are the options I can think about now, maybe more experienced peeps can weigh in

Hi guys! You guys are doing great work here.

My fiancée is in the process of acquiring a PR in Canada from her family ties ie. Her siblings are PRs. She is currently in Canada with her family on a visitor visa and would remain there until she gets it. I would like to know whether it is possible for me to also get a Canadian PR after we get married or what is the procedure and what are my options being that I am in Nigeria?

RomanceRe: Were you ever asked out by a Gay or lesbian, How Did You Handle It ? by TheEminentLaity: 7:43pm On Feb 25, 2019
I asked because I have always wondered if someone can be 'converted' in sexual orientation or influenced because personally I'm repulsed by male gay sex and notions of romance as long as I can remember, in direct contrast with what sexual attraction is from my point of view. That said, I'm straight, always have been from my recollection. As a kid, I fantasised about pretty girl classmates even from nursery school (about 5 years old then), kissed a few too and I don't think they made me do anything I found repulsive, rather I enjoyed it save for the internal struggles with the religious and societal perspectives on such activities – the 'sin' aspect.

Your experience is quite interesting because I've never thought teenagers or even children are or could become asexual. Everyone around me – and I lived in a large estate in an era when children go out to play and TV stations don't start until evening time – was having something going on – either a crush or real stuff or being jealous about someone else's escapades.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and I hope you stay safe from the bigoted barbarians in the country that are always ready to lynch people who are different.

Let's be more tolerant towards our differences smiley
Philomathhh:
Growing up, I used to think I was asexual. I didn't even know that there was something called erection until I got to SS2; perhaps I didn't pay mind to that before then. I saw some of my classmates' d**ks (not uncommon for teenagers to do), and I never gave a second glimpse at those dicks. I just wasn't interested in anybody, irrespective of their gender and/or gender identity.

I saw my first 'blue film' after secondary school with a neighbor who was almost my age mate. I remember watching this straight porn, and with excitement, I told him how I just wanna f**k someone. That I don't care whether it's with a he or she. He laughed it off, and I did too. The truth is, I didn't even understand what I meant by that statement at that moment.

Like I said earlier, there might have been some events that have conditioned my mind to only fall in love with guys, but that event, I can't think of any. Before I was approached by guys, I knew the feeling for same-sex was hiding somewhere, but I wasn't perturbed by it. I felt it was a phase that I'd get over real soon.

The only event I can think of, but wouldn't wanna tag as what led to my 'predicament' is the conversation I had with my dad. At a very early age, my father would flog me for coming second, provided a lady came first in class. My father didn't mind if 100 boys led me in class, but he was always concerned if just a single lady leads me. I remember hating on the girl who was always coming first in class (I was just about 8 years old then). And as such, it was difficult for me to just like any other girls at that point in my life.

Right now, virtually all my friends are ladies, and I really do like them, but I sometimes feel irritated if they do some stuff around me. But if a guy did the same, I'd just laugh it off without a modicum of ire.
RomanceRe: Were you ever asked out by a Gay or lesbian, How Did You Handle It ? by TheEminentLaity: 3:20pm On Feb 25, 2019
Out of curiosity, would you say you being gay was a choice or perhaps due to environmental influences ie. because you've only been approached by guys prior to having sex? Also, if you would be okay to share your childhood, pre-puberty/puberty experience in regard to sexuality. For instance, when you had wet dreams from puberty, were your fantasies about men or women or both or did you even have any at all?
Philomathhh:
PS:- I wouldn't say I was born gay, neither would I say I was influenced/converted. Perhaps, I had some events that made me have sexual penchant towards guys that I can't remember. But all I know is that I have been gay ever since I knew what sex was. And also note, the porn videos I first sighted were straight. So don't be too quick to judge me.
RomanceRe: Hard Facts Of Life. by TheEminentLaity: 10:36am On Feb 10, 2019
It seems you misunderstood what I posted earlier. Further reading of comments from this thread made me understand that, from your admittance, you do not know how the universe came about, neither do you know of 'the process(es)' from which it came about. How then did you become an atheist, what informed your decision, moreso if you came from a religious background? The gist of my earlier post is that you make suppositions with a certainty that is similar to religious fundamentalists that say 'there is (a) god'

Confirmed scientific theories are never wrong since they are based on observations, they may only be upgraded or superceded by a better one in the event of new observations.
You display an ignorance of the history of science. Chemistry had it foundations on alchemy. Theories are superceded, some become obsolete and some eventually turn out to be wrong. A simple internet search would reveal that. I don't believe in arguing for argument sake and I find many atheists reason that way. I would rather learn than win an argument.

Your original post reads like you are certain that there is no god, no afterlife, no 'supernatural' abilities even when you do not even know anything about the universe and the processes that led to its existence. It makes one think that you do this only to annoy the religious folks since you do not have any basis for your somewhat extreme positions.

I am not religious btw, neither do I believe in any god because I do not see anything in my existence and learning that shows that there is one. My position is based on something, mainly science and personal experience, but science itself is prone to changes. Why I insist that one cannot be stand on science and speak like a zealot.

Also, one cannot be an atheist – ala THERE IS NO GOD – in the literal sense because being that also requires evidence to show that there isn't a god, which everyone knows has not been proven. Those who then outrightly dismiss completely any possibility of a god/beign/intelligence is no different from a god believer.

Martinez39:
Okay. grin

If you read my posts, you would know that I am talking about religious gods when I say that there is no god. My observations has led me to conclude that mankind is own it's own to solve it's problem and there is no help coming from anywhere.

If you mean near death experiences, check out one of my recent topics about NDEs under the moniker Martinez19.

When talked about abilities, I never meant physical abilities. Of course there are variations amongst us. I was talking about spiritual abilities. No one has spiritual abilities. Everyone is just human, nothing special. What is spiritually impossible for me is spiritually impossible for everyone.

Lol. What you call mysteries are natural processes that we haven't figured out yet. Confirmed scientific theories are never wrong since they are based on observations, they may only be upgraded or superceded by a better one in the event of new observations. Newton's law of gravity was superceded by General Relativity. Newton's law wasn't wrong but it had a small range of validity which was expanded by Einstein's theory. grin
RomanceRe: Hard Facts Of Life. by TheEminentLaity: 2:35am On Feb 10, 2019
Brilliant analogy, although I would rather a 99:1 % odds at sea because god isn't anywhere close to 10% efficient. But, would you go on to believe in something that you know for certain isn't true? If Yes, how would such belief lead to any assurance of a better future? That would be like forced self-imposed delusion. I agree hopelessness isn't cool neither are many truths comforting. Nihilism is the only logical conclusion of biological existence. Life has no inherent meaning – critical examination scientific and religious POVs reveal this – except that which one decides to; and meaning/purpose can be achieved without believing in superstitions and ancient myths.

Some people care about what is true, even if it hurts.

Pessimism isn't skepticism and neither is it nihilism by the way. Religious people can be pessimists, in fact most, if not all end-time believers are some of the worsts pessimists there are, with their frequent apocalyptic visions and rapture episodes.

The thing about enlightenment is that one cannot go back. One cannot continue to believe Santa Claus would drop gifts after knowing the truth, likewise religion or personal gods. I like this quote because knowledge of reality isn't all fun and roses, to know the extent of suffering that exists in the world and how insignificant humans are in the universe is, quite frankly, depressing.

"Sorrow is knowledge, those that know the most must mourn the deepest, the tree of knowledge is not the tree of life"
– Lord Byron
Amakavula:
My answer is going to be long , let me book space..

I am a fencist when it comes to God. Intelligent arguement would suggest God doesn't exist, but we all know the world isn't intelligent or logical.

On one part, believing there isn't a God is quite intelligent, but believing there isn't isn't fulfilling either. What we are left with without a believe in a great force is a void of hopeless and emptiness ; that our lives offer no purpose ( my supervisor from Japan mentioned how Japan is trying to get people more religious to avoid suicides )

I always likened the God argument to a person lost at Sea. There is a 10% chance people are coming to find you, or there is a 90% chance nobody is coming. But I would take 10% all the time due to the hope and believe it inspires. Which could determine how best I thrive for a better life.

Hopelessness isn't cool, Whether God exist or not could be debated back and forth with no conclusion, but Believe brings you assurance of a better future.

Compare this two scenerio: The Doctor says you got Cancer and there isn't a cure and you will die , and nothing can be done.

Or after going back Doctor says he made an error with the Cancer type , that you still got Cancer but people survive it 10% of the time.

The change in emotion in that person could be the difference between life or death. God is that 10%.

On life and meaning, we find our own meaning through our Passions. There is no collective purpose just individual things. I want to be a writer ( script Writer ) to inspire and educated people, that is my purpose and I hope to find fulfilment there.

Lastly there isn't a good thing about pessimism. it makes you depressed, achieve little and look at things in gloom. Cheer up love. grin
RomanceRe: Hard Facts Of Life. by TheEminentLaity:
@martinez39 Interesting post. Personally, I think Nigeria as a country would change dramatically to a very productive nation if majority of the people have these principles as foundations in their culture and traditions. However, this reads as one written with a high degree of certainty that one – not excluding atheists and nihilists – cannot help but question how you arrived at some of your suppositions.

1) THERE IS NO GOD AND YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN :
Other than making the exact opposite claim of religious fundamentalists about God, I do not fault your explanation. You cannot prove that there isn't a god (god would have to be defined; and it is, as you know, a fruitless hyperloop argument)

2) THERE IS NO AFTERLIFE :
The message is apt. Live life, focus on what is ... but again, you cannot prove that there is no afterlife, so you especially – as one who supposedly arrive at positions with logic – cannot also make such claims. Don't know if you've come across 'NDERF' ... it may not disprove or prove anything but I'm inclined that you may find it interesting.

14) EVERYTHING IS PHYSICAL, NOTHING IS SPIRITUAL :

No human being is spiritually endowed with special anointing, supernatural knowledge, spiritual gifts or any of those nonsenses. No one is special and can't do what you can't spiritually. Throw spiritual nonsenses away
Suppositions of dogmatic certainty is antithetical to logic. People develop special abilities and strengths – some stronger, faster, super brains etc. The term 'supernatural' may just be semantics for an outlier ability resulting from evolution, genes or and even accidents. There are and have existed geniuses and phenomenal savants throughout history. 'Spirituality' and 'spiritual' on the other hand, are somewhat ambiguous and relative depending on whom one might be talking to. People who meditate for their well-being might refer to such as spirituality while other who babble in glossolalia would also say such is an aspect of spirituality. Throw superstitions away, perhaps? YES! by all means.

No really knowledgeable person speaks with utmost certainty like the religious folks because the more one learns, the more one's ignorance is revealed and the more one realizes that they know nothing. There are a good number of unexplained phenomena – call it mysteries – and theories for what is known in science that would be obsolete, if not outright wrong in the future. So, we really cannot be so sure.

He won't have allowed thieves like Gaduje, Minna and co still remain in his government.

He won't allow religious killings

That's all you've been yammering about. To paraphrase you: "Nigerians don't pay high taxes, therefore people heading institutions in the country should 'flex' until the people are ready to pay high taxes" If you cannot allude this as what you've been commenting all along then forgive me for not helping your comprehension skills.

From your comments, I can you almost deduce that you do not own or run any legitimate business in Nigeria to talk about taxes and levies and how much more you would like the government to increase them.

Is it high taxes that make over 75% of Nigerian annual budget to be recurrent expenditure and the national assembly consuming as much as 30%?

How much has Nigeria accrued from oil trade over the years and what exactly is the one sector or public institution thing you can lay a finger on that is efficient?

I read earlier you attributed private investment (GSM) to the government. Bloody shame on you! What next, Olamide is successful because of Nigerian government and policies?

There is no accountability and you are talking about taxes. Have you asked if all states have been able to pay the N18,000 minimum wage but you want increased taxes, from whom if I may ask?

Is it insufficient tax rates, that cause politicians to abscond with money for projects which you clearly think is the main reason the airport has been in that condition since 2012?

Or would you pretend not to be aware that all 'white elephant projects' that have been investigated revealed that the contract sums were not only over-inflated but the funds were fully disbursed.

I don't know if you are trolling, if so then you got me, but I hope there's just a little bit of conscience left in you and that is what I try to reach, even though you may be feeding fat off these sham projects and government officials' stealing.

theoldpretender:
We paid high prices for GSM back in the day, and they took our money and used it to expand and improve their facilities and eventually bring down prices.

Also, why don't you hold your leaders accountable? Or vote for leaders you can hold accountable?

Where do you get the idea I supported bad leadership?

And bills? You people insist on paying less than $5 for light monthly...and you expect 24 hours light...when you should be paying 5 times that? And you expect DISCOS and GENCOS to suddenly have the cash to be able to pay for gas?

You want good universites...and you insist on paying N50000 fees for N1 million naira education?

You insist on paying N97 for fuel that should at least cost N250 per liter...and you wonder why there are scarcity (and you blame govrement...for the worng reasons).

You know that there is a lot of infrastructure in a lot of countries...because people pay heavily in taxes and bills. Not the cheap thing we pay for in Nigeria.

Oil money cannot feed all of us. Neither can restructuring...because the prices of agric and other commodities rise and fall like oilprice. We need to invest in industrial development, and making things that the world needs...not in importing stuff and wasting our money on useless subsides...that prevent job creation, and leave millions unemployed.

So, because of that they should just abandon the project and steal the money? I see your sense. It was a very sophisticated well reasoned.

So,we call on the Chinese government to fix the airport...and it looks beautiful..

then what?

The problem I have with Nigerians is that they want people to do things for them. Nigerians won't vote for sensible people to run things. They insist on paying small taxes, or N20 for something that costs N20000 naira. They somehow think that the funds for maintenance and construction will come from the sky...and so on.

The truth is, if we want beautiful airports in all our cities, we have to be prepared to vote for the right kind of people..not bring back a party that messed us up for 16 years (and pretended to fix the Port Harcourt airport...) or bring back an elderly general that really needs to be retired...or even vote for 'the young men and women'...but people who are prepared to work.

And we must be ready to pay proper taxes. And pay proper bills.Yes, it would be expensive. Yes, what have they done with the money they spent before? But you cannot buy a house for N200million, and be prepared to only spend N50000 annually for maintenance. High quality means high maintenance costs.
