THE World Bank has disclosed that about70 million Nigerian adults are poor, while Jigawa is the poorest state in the country.
World Bank Lead Economist, Mr John Litwack, speaking at the media launch of the Nigeria Economic Report (NER) on Monday in Abuja, stated that poverty rates remain high particularly in rural area.
Mr Litwack noted in the report that although poverty rate declined slightly between 2004 and 2010, it did not however reflect on the generality of Nigerians.
The NER stated that Lagos had the lowest poverty rate of 22.9 per cent while Jigawa had the highest at 77.5 per cent. The report further showed that poverty is concentrated more in the Northern part of the country as against the South West where the rate of poverty is lowest.
The World Bank lead economist explained that to overcome these, there is need for better coordination of federal and state policies in key areas of the economy namely: macroeconomic management, coordinated policies to enhance market connectivity and improve public service, and the realisation of national standards in public financial management and disclosure.
“Enhanced cooperation among the federal and state governments can successfully address all these issues, thereby unlocking enormous potential for growth, job creation, and improvement in the welfare of Nigerian citizens,” the report said.
He insisted that problems in government have hindered the ability of Nigeria to translate its resource wealth into the infrastructure and public services needed for a take-off into sustainable and diversified growth.
Litwack said that to attract foreign investors, it was important that government also tackle the problems of market connectivity and infrastructural deficit.
“Investors with the potential to set up large scale operations and create jobs will be reluctant to do so if they cannot service a large market. Under these conditions, a number of Nigerian states have limited opportunities to attract significant investors,” he said.
He pointed out that for Nigeria’s federal system of government to work for development, there was need to hold government officials accountable, saying that until the public was aware of public expenditure, it would be difficult to hold public officers accountable.
“In Nigeria, much too little of this information is current is currently available at every level of government. In some cases, the problem can be related to the actual absence of information. In other cases, the information may exist, but is not disclosed to the public in a regular and clear manner.”
The World Bank therefore recommended that “better monitoring of indicators of performance can foster healthy competition and knowledge sharing among Nigerian states, as well as increasing accountability of public officials to voters.”
The lead author of the report, while acknowledging that the country’s improved macroeconomic management had strengthened its balance of payment and reserve accumulation, added that increased accumulation of the country’s Excess Crude Account (ECA) would make it less vulnerable to any global financial shocks.
Speaking at the launch, the World Bank Country Director to Nigeria, Marie Francois Marie-Nelly, said there was need by the government to begin to operate a more stable budget despite volatility in oil prices worldwide.
She urged the government to create a conducive atmosphere for investment to thrive and “the private sector will come in.”

All the roads cannot be fixed in 2 years. This is the problem I have with critics. If you must criticize, it must be based on fair assessment. The question is what percentage of the roads have been fixed in the last 2 years. I think that is why the lady said what she said. The very major roads are either fixed or being fixed.

TO provide a credible opposition you need a political party whose leaders have been tested and trusted and who have provided credible leadership that transcends ethnic or geographical demarcations and have been found to be above board in their individual and official dealings within and outside government.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory was no doubt a credible opposition. He was a strategist and a great thinker who provided Nigerians with statistical and logical arguments as to the position of government and what they were up to. He, it was that exposed the weak economic policies of the Shagari era which he prophesised that unless an urgent action is taken, there shall be total socio-economic downturn. Accordingly, we witnessed the coming into force of the Economic Stabilisation Act otherwise known as austerity measure.

Recently, the tempo of opposition frenzy has risen to another level with the nose-diving of their individual capacities to govern Nigeria in 2015 courtesy of the merger of mixed up parties seemingly moving forward. Typical of the loudness of empty political barrels, all we have heard from our ambitious aspirants to national power is a cacophony of criticisms of the incumbent ruling party, the PDP and a damning silence as to their own credible credentials for pointing accusing fingers. It is commonsense that it takes more than a capacity to unleash criticisms to demonstrate ability to succeed in any human endeavour, so as far as Nigerians are concerned, the opposition zealots are non-starters.

There is no gainsaying that Nigeria is not a banana republic that can be governed with the ease monkeys devour bananas. Even the monkeys demonstrate several uncanny skills in navigating the bush and staying alive to munch their favourite fruit rather than gathering in isolated groups to groan about other consumers of bananas! Nigeria is still a developing country treading the difficult and unpredictable path that all great nations must go through as part of the process of nationhood. Governing Nigeria is not a tea party!

The frivolous manner in which opposition leaders respond to the inevitable vicissitudes of political leadership as we are all witnessing in today’s Nigeria indicates that their obsession with capturing power is completely blind and insensitive to its inherent challenging responsibilities. As far as our evidently juvenile and exuberant opposition mandarins are concerned, all it takes to “fix” Nigeria is for its desperate leaders to get into Aso Villa but nothing could be further from the truth.

Even more condemnable is the brazen lack of patriotism that motivates opposition politicians as they seek to maliciously discredit the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan Administration by going to the extent of engaging in covert and overt acts of sabotage capable of threatening not just their perceived political rival but indeed the entire nation. This can be deduced from their consistent refusal to contribute actively and responsibly to the quest for lasting solutions to the nagging national problems that confront government while zealously capitalising on real and imaginary challenges.

An objective analysis of these undesirable tendencies of the ambitious opposition however will convincingly prove that such rascality is the direct result of the glaring incapacity and unsuitability of the ringleaders. For example, Tinubu is today prancing around the stage in the ill-fitting guise of a national leader whereas in Lagos State where he once governed he is regarded as a sharp contrast of incompetence and imprudence vis-a-vis’ the incumbent governor of the state. In fact, the political arena in the state is buzzing with the open secret of Tinubu’s envious ego casting ominous shadows on the greater successes of his supposedly anointed successor!

General Buhari is another opposition character who typifies the sheer unsuitability and incapacity of the political clique blindly seeking to grab power in Nigeria. This is a retired general whose record of draconian dictatorship and pathological hatred for politics is unmatched in Nigeria’s political history. Yet, out of sheer inordinate ambition after getting booted out of power by his smarter collaborators, plunged head on into politics of seeking the Presidency at the first opportunity! No wonder he is also emerging unopposed as the worst president Nigeria will never have, according to those who have observed him closely in his here-today-gone-tomorrow brand of barrack politics.

It is logical to go further and conclude that any group of Nigerians who continue rallying round such politically peculiar political prospectors have been fatally inflicted by their maladies such that they are unable to see, think or act with the expected intelligence and circumspection that has convinced the majority of Nigerians to steer clear of failed politicians. This is also highlighted by the peculiarities of the hired crowds who are bussed to their rowdy and risky rallies where crude weapons and menacing slogans take the place of meaningful lectures and voter’s education.

But we must live with these liabilities in the name of democracy whereby the good, the bad, and the ugly are said to be equal in exercising civic rights, sadly including the right to be voted for. To ward off the unspeakable implications of a government of misfits descending on our besieged nation, we must fervently pray that the irreconcilable differences and conflicting ambitions of the opposition leaders continue to render their political agenda the huge joke that it has been well beyond 2015. Amen!

Good. That is better. It was very frustrating having to call customer service for such a simple task. I actually have fought the guys at customer service several times because of this. The data cap is still very poor. Airtel used to be my best network but they dont seem to realise the competition is stiff now. They need to step it up. 1 GB is ridiculous.

My rating for the networks was based on the following:

1. Data cap
2. Speed
3. Coverage
4. Stability and reliability
5. Easy of use and access
6. Automation
7. Customer care


Etisalat beats everyone for now with their unlimited data and lighting fast speed. This is so on point. I hate the fact that it cant be used on my modem or Android but the unlimited data and speed is too juicy to ignore. So I simply connect it to my laptop and use blackberry desktop software to connect to it as a modem and browse. Glo would have been second for me but for the fact you cant use theirs on your modem or Android phones, MTN comes second. Airtel comes last because of their 1 GB cap. It is ridiculous

I never said they were perfect. That they havent improved in your area doesnt mean they havent improved elsewhere. I have never liked MTN connection but recently, they have improved. I just came back from a journey where I moved through several states and they have really improved. The last time I traveled, they were rubbish. I decided to write this to clarify some confusion from a previous thread. This is an assessment of the GSM networks and their BB Internet connections

MTN

Now N1, 000 for I month BB Complete subscription
It has a data cap of 3.5GB
You can use it on your modem or Android or Iphone
It has good coverage but can be very slow for 2.5G phones. MTN didnt properly deploy 2.5G before moving to 3G. Their customer service has also improved. I used to hate MTN Internet. Infact, it used to be the worst, but it has improved greatly in the last 2 months. They probably sat up because of number portability

GLO

BB Complete plan is 1, 400
It has a data cap of 3.5GB. They recently reduced it to 1GB but the rage from customers made them put it back on 3.5GB. I really dont know why they are not offering more bandwidth since they are the only network with their own backbone. MTN, Airtel and Etisalat actually get part of their Internet from GLO One cable and part from the NITEL cable
You cannot use it on your modem and Android.
Glo has about the best Nationwide coverage of all the networks. You can get 3G almost every where you go. You can drive for hundreds of kilometers without your connection going off. But they recently are beginning to piss me off. They have a terrible, powerless, customer service that cant help you. They seem too arrogant to me.
Their connection is very fast and stable. Glo and Etisalat have by far the most stable connections. Glo has the most secure system too

Airtel

Airtel were the darling of BB subscription for a long time because of the ability to use the subscription on your modem or Android/Iphone device. But their 1GB data cap was my biggest put off. They have good coverage but not as wide as MTN or Glo. Their 3G service is good and they can be very fast where their coverage is good. They are also very good on 2.5 phones.
They have a good customer service that can be accessed easily. But I hate the fact that many of their services are not automated. Imagine that you have to call their customer service to deactivate your BB subscription when you exceed your data cap and you cant browse anymore. They have refused to provide a code for deactivating ones BB subscription. Same goes for some other services. Many times, you have to visit their care center to do simple tasks that could have been done by simply sending a text to a short code
I also dont know why they have refused to increase their data cap.

Etisalat

These guys are the most dynamic of the lot. They have about the fastest Internet connection and unlimited data for BB subscription. The down side is that you cannot use it on your modem or Android. They are very stable and reliable. Anyone who says they have no good coverage is talking bull. Their coverage is very good. Though not as big as MTN or Glo, but except you are visiting remote villages, you will be fine.
I do not like their customer service. They have to step it up there. I like their flexibility and dynamism in their services. From day 1, they have been very innovative with their services.
I hate how they switch to pay as you go immediately your plan expires.

Overall, if you consider all the factors, my rating for BB subscriptions would be

1. Etisalat
2. MTN
3. Glo
4. Airtel

This is certainly not the time to urge Nigerians to take lessons from history to note that this approach has almost never worked but the political opposition ,asking the people to trust it with power, is duty-bound to give their opinion however unwanted it is at the time by a people overcome by hope more than critical thinking.

Join a cooperative. Go to your state and join a farmers cooperative! so many people are benefitting from it. Dont mind these foools posting from Lagos and from diaspora! Cooperatives can access loans, fertilizer and other resources. The federal ministry of Agriculture has made it so open and simple. Cassava and rice production is expanding massively. A lot of it is being exporter. Last year, Nigeria exported so much to China and other countries. The best option for you is simply go to your state and join the farmers cooperative.

All over the world, nations unite to fight terrorism, even when they disagree in every other issue. But you folks here are using the Boko Aram terrorism as a campaign tool. So so sad!
