Wow...did not know that Oramiyan's staff was that tall! Interesting site. |
FindX:Ah you don't want help. See, babes don't just drop in your hand like that. Most babes have been brought up to beleive that the guy does the approaching...not the other way round (and a babe who does the approaching is going to get a bad reputation). And babes like a guy that seems approachable... Better take my advice...before you find yourself a bachelor at fifty! After all...you do not have a right to a girlfriend...you have to fight for a girlfriend. And your weapons are talking, and moore talking.... |
Jiang:Well, some of our leaders in the past did not have the advantage of going to unviersity..largely because we did not have enough unviersities, and because entry requirements were much harder (5 credits did not cut it) Going to university, until the 1980's...was not that easy. (My mum and two out of her 5 siblings have degrees). Plus, in the run up to independence...we did not have that many graduates...but we needed to get people in high office fast...(and the funny thing is that in the UK many people too did not go to university...the concept of 'everyone going to university in Europe is a recent thing..like the 1970's). NYSC...was established in 1973..plus service in the Army and other paramillitary organisations makes one ineligible. We were Nigerianising fast in the 1950's and 60...that's why we had many 'non graduates in place' . And many of them non grads did establish things like Universities! (Sir Ahmadu Bello...zero degree..pushed for the establishment of ABU). On the second issue, how much is the minimum of wage Germany & Denmark, if Nigeria can increase it to that amount, then tax 50% for basic amenities, then cool. That's the problem...we can't. Our budget...even removing corruption...cannot reach that level. Yet....Nigerians want Cambridge level degrees free of charge. It doesn't work...it has to be paid for. Did you know in the past Nigeria has an effective tax collection system, every household pays tax based on the number of people in that family, to be collected by district heads & submitted to the government. And if we try to bring it back...Nigerians will PROTEST. Most Nigerians so don't like taxes. After all we are a rich country...we have oil! (Which has not been earning enough money for us recently..due to low prices.) |
FindX:Go out , meet people, talk to people. Find a group, a church group, join, do some service. Get friendly with the girls where you work. Talk with them about life, television, fashon, etc. That is how two of my office co workers are getting closer to each other...soon I feel there will be an announcement ![]() |
Jiang:First, thanks for calling me evil. I really like it that you called me something I did not call you. But , on to the issue....we cannot exterminate the Nigerian political elites and hope for 'selfless new guys'...Has been tried before in France (within 20 years, the elite were back) and Russia ( them communist officials lived too well...even had their own special shops). The harsh reality is that tertiary educaiton costs a lot of money. So much money. Now, most of the political elite of this country went to school for free. But back then...it was a lot harder to get into tertiary education, there were far fewer students(by 1987...there were 100000 students in Nigerian universities)...and we had fewer schools. Now we have over 70 government unviersites, just as many polytechinics...and so on And we need trillions of naira to provide facilites that are at par with international standard...and at the same time privide free education. So, even if we get 'selfless leaders'...the funding issue is still going to be there. I hear Nigerians screaming that Germany and Denmark have free education. Sure...at tax rates of 50%. |
Foodforthought:Yeah...we know the population. But the thing is, if Southern people don't get the numbers in to the police force...how then can our politicians, our people in the force , fight on our behalf? When most of us are not interested. Back in the run up to independence, many Northerners and Middle Belters joined the army. Southerners meanwhile scorned those of our number who joined the army. See where it led us. Emir of Kano's son is a police officer. If the son of a Southerner traditional ruler tries to join...I bet you his people will try to stop him. Anyway...thanks to Federal character.and high numbers..most of the Northerners would get rejected |
writerights:Exactly. The other day, the Emir of Kano's son graduated from Police college. Meanwhile, if any traditional ruler's son or daughter tries to join Police force...am sure they will be shouting at the person for not going to university. Sometimes, Southerners create problem for themselves. |
NotBeenPaid:Sorry, but your critique is too lazy. I read the ASUU 2009 agreement. The agreement promised UNIVERSITES alone 1.5 trillion (then) in yearly funding. Our budget is 9trillion. next year. Polytechinics too probably need at least N1 trillion in yearly additional funding And primary and secondary schools need at least N1 trillion if not more. The problem is funding..and what makes it worse is the corruption inside. You cannot expect to get $200000 education by paying just $200....it is not possible. Yes...my parents went to school 'for free'...back when we had just six universities, back when it was harder to get into poly or university (you needed to pass O level, A level and from 1978 JAMB)....and when one university had just 3000 students in 1973. Now, we have probably 5 million students in polys and universites...and it costs N600000 to N2million to train one student...but students pay less than N50000-200000. And then there is corruption. And oil price is at $60. We need it at $140 before we can get a budget that can sustain all of us. So, let's be realistic, let's fight corruption, but let's not think we have a bottomless pit full of dolalrs somewhere in Aso villa. |
NotBeenPaid:No, it is a matter of funding. We all want to go to university and poly for free...meanwhile, government can only afford to put in 800bn for education in the budget. Yes, let's cut funding for National Assembly...which gives us N500million at most. Meanwhile...universities need at least N2trillion naira worth of funding yearly to be up to date.... The problem is bigger than you think...and either we pay high fees, or high taxes...or another loan loading. |
The only way to end strikes in Nigeria's education sector. 1.Increase school fees. 2.Privatise universites, and redirect funding to other sectors...including polytechnics and C of E. 3.Raise taxes to half the income of every Nigerian in return for free education 4.Take another loan. 5.Pray oil goes up to $140 per barrel. |
Uteghe:It was an ABANDONED PETROL TANK son... |
Rollins777:Stop worrying PDP boy....your party might win next year...largely because APC has lost the middle belt. And it is a sad thing that Nigerians prefer both your party and the APC.... |
FortifiedCity: dotcodotuk:The two of you deserve each other. Lobbying for two equally corrupt parties. |
Thank you sir for your great service to our nation and the people. Boko Haram will be defeated! |
Magalan:Looking at the chart below...education was 294BN IN 2010 602BN in 2018 It has fallen as a percentage of the budget though. And even then, according to the ASUU/FG agreeement, we need N3 trillion over 2 years in extra funding for universites. Spending on education is going up,not down. |
The only solution is to allow everyone in the downstream....marketers, depot owners, etc...sell oil at the price they want. NNPC should also be made private, and DPR should stop regulating prices. Yes, fuel will shoot up to N250 per liter. Yes, my salary will begin to look smaller and smaller.... But investment will flow in, we may even get new refineries....and at the end of the day, prices might begin to fall. And all this scam, all this 'Baru economics' at NNPC will come to an end. Oil subsidy has to go If GSM could be deregulated, if we were paying N10000 for SIM in 2003...now N500 thanks to the fact that investment flowed in easily without price controls....and look at where we are now...why not petorleum? Would we like it if Bubu started telling us to sell our goods and services at prices below what we bought them for? |
If the downstream sector is thoroughly deregulated and marketers are allowed to sell at their price, not government price, this stuff won't have happened. Oil subsidy must go. |
Felixv:The cheapest school in China is around 2000 pounds. IE universities In Nigeria it is below 300 pounds for the most expensive university Germans pay half their income in taxes for the freebies you mention. Look, if we were to apply German method of funding to Nigeria, you guys would be paying half your salary as tax, and you people won't agree. University is expensive. It is a bitter truth. What you want is 20000000 naira education at 2000 naira. It is not possible |
otokx:Happens everywhere you know. In some developed and developing countries they have special drop off points where the unwanted babies can be dropped off confidentiality. |
notoriousbabe:Thanks for the information, O Great and Mighty Goddess of Truth and Knowledge. Your beauty surpasses a thousand nastomys natalensis, O Great and mighty Goddess of Truth and Knowledge. Your eyes are bright like a thousand carica papaya, O Great Goddess. Great is the Goddess, kanti kanti maka kanti. Now bless.us with 200000 naira in our account for the publicity, there's a dear. |
Hmm This one Don administer many tests before.... |
thedio:Okay...don't complain when the poor with their half baked degrees cannot compete against the rich with their good degrees. |
jamace:1.Tam David West was joking...and he knew it. Anyone who knows what was going on could see that (and his comment began my processof not taking APC serious)....Fuel at N45 was impossile, with cost of importing the fuel above N100 at that time, plus even when all our refineries workperfectly...we need more of them...see no2. 2.A new refinery costs $9billion(that is 3,275,999,698,608.03 naira. We need four of them. Our reserves are at $41bn. (And I doubt we can use the reserves...which leaves the budget.). 3.Only way we can build refineries is by attracting investment into our petrol sector...and removing subsidy is a start.(Dangote.? Dangote is not going to sell PMS from his refinery at N145 PER LITER). 4.Always take political promises with a pinch of salt. (It keeps one calm and less cynical). Atiku says he would sell fuel at N90 per liter. Landing cost is N180 . Where is he going to find the money ? Scarcity part 2loading. The truth is noone...APC,PDP,orNigerians want to remove subsidy. Many people are benefiting from the corrupt subsidy deals...and Nigerians benefit fromthe illusion of 'lowoilprice'. And our petrol sector is cash strapped. |
Mtmike:Nitel was a mess. It was not working well, it was limited to about 400000lines, service was very expensive (when my family had a NITEL line we could not make calls...ESPECIALLY international calls because they were expensive)...and service was iffy sometimes. NITEL's privatization was a mess. It was sold to some Nigerian company with iffy credentials (and there were two or three more credible investors...)..and a few years later, the thing collapsed. It is now back, but with limited service, and is now an ISP. MTEL (Nitel's mobile phone subsidary) started off well, entered the GSM market well (was giving MTN and co a run for their money). Problem was..it was a government company...and they could not compete with MTN and Airtel and Glo. |
Realdeals:So, you have moved the goalpost to 'household income' eh? You people say that education in Germany is free..therefore we need it to be free in Nigeria. When we tell you how much it costs the germans to pay for the free education...you start talking about household income... ![]() The truth is , universities suck money. Either you are willing to pay $20000 for a $20000 degree or nothing. You cannot pay $200 and expect a product worth $20000. Sorry, but it is not possible. And the truth is...that is what you guys want. And that is magical thinking. Beautiiful on paper...unworkable in reality (And before you jump on me...God knows I wish fees were as low as 10000 per annum. But that would only mean severely chromically underfunded universitiy, and lotsof half baked graduates who cannot perform against the rich kids in the job market). Infact, let govt privatise universites...so that funding can be directed to techincal schools. We need more technicians...to make our country an industrial powerhouse. We don't need more office workers/clerks. |
afroxyz:German and Scandinavian countries also pay high rates of tax...which are used to fund education...all sectors, not just university. Denmark and Germany have high tax rates. Norway is the world's fifth largest oil producer, and also has a high tax rate...and a population less than 10 million people. Thus they can afford free education. In Nigeria our tax rate is 20% of our income or less (and many people don't pay tax, plus if your monthly income is less than 50000naira you are exempt from taxation)....and we don't produce enough oil...and for us to earn enough from oil it has to be at the price of $140 per barrel. (it is now $60...which is part of the reason why we take loans). If we did what Germany and the scandinavians do...we could be paying half our salaries as tax monthly. All for free educaiton. |
Felixv:Germany China and Japan also 1.Are highly industrial countries which export in bulk...meaning their governments make trillions in dollars in tax revenue. Nigeria exports just oil, some cocoa, some beans, and we are not the number one producer in any one of them commodities. 2.Who told you China does not pay fees? As an example...fees in China can be as high as 3500 pounds sterling per annum (in Nigeria, fees are kept below 200-300 pounds per annum). Japanese students also pay fees (here is an example from Osaka University) plus education costs in primary and secondary school are high. Germany is free...BUT....at the cost of half a german's income in taxes. (Try that in Nigeria...there would be a revolution before the day is over). |
greenek:And you cannot ahve 100 percent commitment fromlecturers who have to teach with poor facilities, orstudents who learn and live in poor faciliites. |
jamace:Now,I don't like APC,or Bubu...or PDP...But... 1.Bubu was refering to the practice of people claiming subsidy money for what they did not import .(Remember the brief trial of Otedola.). 2.The amout being paid is the left over subsidy claims from the last administration (If you think I am blaming GEJ...please wait and read no 3) 3.GEJ tried to remove subsidy in 2012...partially...because his financial advisers were telling himthat paying for subsidy was no longer sustainable. PMS went up from N65 to N140..Nigerians protested...and price fell to N97. 4.We import most of the fuel we use...because we cannot produce enough for our needs (And why have we no new refienreis...because no investor wants to come and build a refinery if it means selling fuel produced at a subsidsed rate). 5.Because of govt keeping that unsustainable subsidy regimen...which became unsustainble especially as the landing price edged over N120 perliter in 2014...and we were selling fuel at N97 and then N87...a debt of N840BN was accumulated. 6.That is the debt that we are still paying off. 7.Buhari is stuck paying subsidy because if he closed down the scam...fuel would shoot up to N200 and above. (landing cost is now N180 perliter. It was N132 when Bubu increased fuel from N87 to N145....under pressure...because he wanted to keepit at N87...but it was unsustainable, and his financial advisers knew it)....problem is,the scam is now centered around NNPC...which importsfuel at N180...subsidises it down to N145...and sells it to marketers at that price...forcing them to sell it at that price.(and the money to keep the price down is obtained via some dubious accounting). |
myboy2111:State universites in the US charge fees of about $3000-10000,some even higher ($3000 is the cheapest I have seen). Nigerian universites charge fees less than $200 (government owned state universites) Not the same. |
