Oh lord... The child is not too cute ...but she does look tooo intelligent for her age. |
Pruwa:The thing is, it is either govt finds 3 trillion naira to fund university sector, forget pry and secondary sectors, out of a budget of 9 trillion naira, or fees have to go up. |
The problem started in 2009 when Government promised ASUU 3trillion naira in extra funding, then beat it down to 1 trillion in 2013, now it is 17 billion or something. Truth is, if strikes must end, either government finds 3trillion naira out of a budget of 9 trillion or they raise fees. And right now, raising fees is the only way out. |
mycar:No one sells naira at 197,except to Muslim and Christian pilgrims (and yes, I think it is wrong). Plus, we need oil to sell at 140 per barrel to have sufficient money to fund a balanced budget without borrowing. You misunderstood me |
mycar:1.At the time, the cost of importing fuel was 130 naira per.liter..Queues were still in place. And as result prices went up to 145 later that year. Now the cost of importing fuel is 180 per liter. Whoever wrote that article did not take that into account 2.Our refineries at.full capacity can refine 25m liters of fuel.per day.Our daily needs exceed 50m liters .We need five more.of.Dangote refinery to stop importing fuel. A new refinery costs 9bn dollars. Our reserves total 40bn. And we cannot use them.because our economy would crash if we did. Sorry, but if we were.making profit, why did we have queues.. Because fixing the price of petrol below the import price was not a good idea. Removing subsidy should have been done since 2006. |
Iyajelili:So by asking govt to.pay a debt, it is interference in political affairs. I'm sorry, but hate is not good for you. |
AntiMahdi:Thing is, the debt is not Buhari fault. Neither is it GEJ fault. It is the fault of most Nigerians whose desire for cheap fuel means that in 2012 govt was forced to keep an.unsustainable fuel subsidy which led to the debt. But neither APC nor PDP want to face reality and remove subsidy |
Buterflyle0:Buhari took does have some issues Non removal of fuel subsidies completely which is sustaining the subsidy mess at the NNPC. I also think that he should have given dollars to.industriaists at a very favourable rate. Corruption is still happening too |
noturbusiness:Not to defend Buhari or GEJ, but the reason why we borrow is because the price of oil that can keep our budget balanced has always been higher than the actual price. Right now, Nigeria needs oil at 140 us dollars per barrel. Since Buhari took over oil has been at $80 and below, even as low as $30. If we did not borrow, by now many Nigerians would have not had their salaries paid since 2015. At all. People would be so broke. |
Cholison:They can pay them by allowing them to charge prices for PMS the way they want to IE subsidy removal. But most Nigerians don't want that, so marketers are between a rock and a hard place |
AntiMahdi:The debt is GEJ fault. Now, before you jump in with your defence, the reason why there is so much debt is by 2011, subsidizing fuel was not feasible any longer. In 2012, GEJ removed subsidies partially on PMS. Nigerians protested, the unsustainable subsidy was restored, hence the debt.. This debt is another reason why oil subsidy must go |
SpecialAdviser:If he did, and for the record I think he should, fuel would be 250 per liter |
OluwabuqqyYOLO:No, ASUP does not want you guys to pay high school fees....which is the inevitable result of government not being able to increase funding. And let'sface facts....government is not going to increase funding. By my estimate, polys need at least N2 trillion yearly to be adequately funded. Universites too need the same amount. Our budget is N9 trillion. You do the math. |
Same issues in Universitres....same issues in polyutechincs. In my opinion...government should privatise all the universites...and redirect funding to primary, secondary and polytechinics.... Polys are crucial to our techinical development...and should not be allowed to increase fees. |
OkaNaUbe:Not to defend the Bubu...but thatpicture you posted...was an edition of the Herald from january 25 1984. Bubu then had been in power for 26 days (he took over via coup on Dec 31 1983)....and the poor economy was due to the wastefulness of the Shagari era plus the oil price crash of 1982. (The irony of Bubu's life...he always takes over after oilprice crashes have been on for a year or so. Oil crashed in 1982 sept...Bubu took over in Dec 31 1983. Oil crashes in April2014....Bubu takes over May 2015.Life). |
GoldChest:Yes, we know APC has failed...yet you guys want us to choose a guy who until recently was part of the same APC, helped them into power, and supported them until they would not let him take their presidential ticket. You also want us to return to a party which is, let's not lie, partly responsible for the problems we are facing today...and which did nothing to sort out many of these problems in 16 years. When we ask you guys to vote someone new...a Moghalu,a Sowore, even a Hashim, or a YY Sani...you guys will sit down and tell us that they have no support...and then go and support the same old same old looters. Don't come complaining when PDP messes up after they take over. Same goes for them APC supporters. You guys are not interested in making Nigeria better. You just want to chop money.....and chop money. |
ZaOzaRoom:You mean Caster Semenya. Semenya is a woman who has a hormonal condition that makes her secrete testoterone far more than the ordinary woman, but not as much as a man. If she ran with men, she would place dead last. (And she has lost races before...it is not that she is that invincible) |
marvin906:I usually don't get angry here on Nairaland, but I think that this doctors and nurse abuse has gone far enough. I used to work in one private hospital. One night a guy came with his heavily pregnant wife. Wife was having obstructed labour. Husband begged doctor to do operation : money would come later. The doctor...my oga then...did the op. Up till today, husband has not dropped a single penny. Keep in mind that government hospitals also rely on the revenue they generate in a year.... The reason why they rejected that patient was not because of demons and fallen angels...but because far too many patients are owing bills, and when it begins to affect the perfomance of the hospital...ie in dealing with overheads, providning some essential materials....you have to make a choice. Treat people for free and go broke...or start being firm...and save money, and jobs. So please, stop insulting us....especially as some of us use our salary to pay for patients...without expecting reimbursment. And we have dependents and families too. Grow up. |
The truth is, we need trillions of naira to guarantee good health care. And before you insult the health workers, the problem is most hospitals are broke from treating patients free of charge. People come to hospital, get free treatment, and run away without paying .affects both private and public hospitals Then there is the fact of late presentation. I do not know the child history, but it is possible the child would have died even if oxygen had been put on because it is too late. And before anyone calls us health workers heartless.,some of us dip into our pockets and pay for these type of patients. I know. I used to be one of those medical staff who did that, and when it starts telling on your pocket.... |
Good idea. We need standard signage on our roads |
grandstar:Let's forget politics for a few minutes...and imagine Buhari removed fuel subsidy. All Nigerians would see is that fuel has gone up to N250 or more per liter. They won't hear 'Long term benefits" There will be riots on the street. After all, GEJ did the same thing (raised it to N140 per liter from N65)...and there were riots on the streets.... No Nigerian leader wants to deregulate. It is too politically expensive. DESPITE the fact that it is good economic practice that might even benefit us in the LONG run. |
osazsky:Been a while since I left university...but I beleive a professor earns about 500,000 naira monthly. Other cadre earn probabaly between 300000-400000 monthly. And there isn't money in this country. Our budget is N9trillion naira per annum. Lookslike a lot...till it is divided up (and yes, corruption). I should also point out that the lecturers are not just asking for salaries....they want better funding for things like facilties, etc. And dealing with that is going to cost at least (my opinion) N2 trillion per annum (for universites alone, primary and secondary school and other teritiary instituitons not included). Consider we have a budget of N9trillion...(and health care probabaly needs N3 trillion out of that). |
princechurchill:1.The problem has less to do with Bubu's certificate...and more to do with the fact that the cost of satrisfying the lectuer's demad is going to cost hundreds of billions of naira According to the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement...it will cost N1.5 trillion per annum to adfeualtely fund unviersites.(Cost has increased due to the establishment of more universities). 2.If you want WAEC certificate holders to stop running your country...get your Senator to sponsor a bill making it mandatory for political office holders to have a BSc. |
Denikayan:Some employers of labour do ask for drug tests.... For example...one Nigerian who got a job with PETRONAS (the Malaysian oil company, major player in the oil business)...wasasked to do a drug test Of course most don't,but some do. |
simplycarro:And they force marketers to sell at the price NNPC sells to them..... Also, much of the debt collector edition from the time when marketers were importing as well. |
Pavarottii:Considering I supported removal of subsidy back in 2012.... |
olawooro:No. Have been following the subsidy issue since the early 1990's...and like most Nigerians blamed government and the marketers. I even was one of those who called a certain Minister who stated that fuel was cheaper than cocacola in 2006 names. However, since 2011...I have been educating myself more about the issue. The problem is, marketers import fuel at N180 perliter....and sell it at N145 perliter. Meaning they lose N35 per liter of fuel sold. Normally, government is supposed to pay the N35 difference, but due to low oil prices (keep in mind that Nigeria needs to seee crude oilprices at $140 per barrel to run a balanced budget...and right now.....fuel is low)....they cannot keep paying that money. (Corruption too makes the matter worse). So marketers , facing an end of year loss that might force them to SACK WORKERS engage in scarcity...so that they can force government to pay up...while they also do things like selling oil to black marketers who sell it at a higher pricefor them, smuggle it to countries like Niger and Benin where oil is sold at a much higher price.....so that they can make money to keep their businesses above water. That is why I think oil subsidy should go. Unless...you people want government to start taking more loans. |
RealityShot:Well, the simple answer is this 1.It costs N180 to import one liter of fuel. 2.Marketers sell fuel at N142-N145 per liter. 3.Meaning...most marketers sell at a loss. 4.Government pays them the difference. 5.The method of payment is 'promisory notes'...meaning govt promises to pay them the difference at some time in the future. 6.Of course...most marketers cannot do business under such circumstances...so they take loans from banks to stay afloat. That is not sustainable. 7.So...marketers engineer subsides...to get their money from the government 8.Marketers also use the opportunity to smuggle fuel across the borders...to neighbouring African countries where fuel is sold at prices as high as N250 or more per liter legally...which enables them to make some money...to keep their businesses flowing for the next year. They also sell to black marketers who then sell the fuel for higher prices.. The fact of the matter is...if they don't do this....they would be broke .....and then they would have to start sacking workers, and closing their fuel business. That is how it has been going on for years. Assuming oil subsidy goes...and government stops setting the price of fuel...or sets the price at a higher level than the landing costs...marketers would make enough of a protfit to be able to keep petrol flowing. Some might even make enouigh profit to build new refineries. |
naijacentric:The problem is for many years, the government has not been able to afford the payment of subsidy claims...the N800million owed includes debts from before the current government. And as you know, there is a lot of fraud in the subsidy claims business. Plus, it costs N180 to import one liter of PMS. Meanwhile markteters are forced to sell at N145 (Would you like it if the government forced you to sell at a price below what you bought it?) If subsidy is removed, yes, prices will go up, BUT.....there would be more funds and crucially, more investment...which could lead to things like new refineries.Eventually....prices will FALL. Look at the GSM business. When GSM came to Nigeria....a SIM cost N10000. People were shouting at government to control the price of SIM and the price of calling. Govt refused. The GSM companies made a lot of profit...which they were able to invest in better facilities.Over time, the service improved....and crucially, prices fell. (SIM now costs less than N1000). And FYI...I am not a rich man. I commute a long distance to work.If subsidy goes, my fuel costs are going to shoot up. But I think it is a small price to pay to end a big drain on our economy. |
kings09: escapefromusa:Well, guys, forget politics. What has been happening is that government forces marketers to sell fuel at a subsidised price...aka price below the actual price...and they pay them the difference at the end of the year. (That's the N800million). Problem is, over the years, government has been finding it difficult to pay that money....EVEN at high oil prices. The simple solution...government stops setting the prices removes subsidy.....fuel shoots up above N200 per liter...and at the end of the day, most marketers money problems end...subsidy scams end, and things get better. And government saves money. |
gurunlocker:Because selling fuel at 145 naira per liter when the cost of importing fuel is 180 per liter is profitable business? Yeah, right. Many of you Nigerians won't agree if government did the same for your business, but you want then to do it for the fuel business |
