I'm left of center and always like to thread the part least followed. I'd say consider a career in real time communications. VoIP specifically. Learn Asterisk or Freeswitch.

Recently stumbled across some Nigerian guys working for Telnyx as devs. Glass door suggests they may be pulling in around $100k per annum although I think it's closer to $84k. These are direct full-time employees, not Independent Contractors like us.
Does this depend on country the OP is relocating to, I am asking because jobs are generally available in US for all types of skill. but when it comes to EU, then we start having troubles finding the companies hiring depending on which EU country.

Getting a face-time teacher will be difficult for me cause of the nature of my job.

I just need to be pointed towards what will be the best course to start with and how to get the necessary information online.
What you really need is a face-time teacher either virtually or physically to hand-hold you for a start because your first 3 months in tech will be a whirlwind & you will be frustrated most of time.

HeliumStar:
Then why is it so hated among programmers as a learning resource especially amongst those abroad. I remember when I was about to start learning and was searching for the best free platform, one even said if he saw an applicant with a certificate from W3schools, he'd instantly throw it into the bin.

I really would like to know why, if you don't mind.
Many reasons.

Incomplete resource:
W3schools is good for syntax, but It is extremely and amateur beginner friendly as It omits a lot of important stuff of a programming language when learning, but they forget people new to programming do not even require that deep resource, they just need to get their foot in the door. Definitely not for more seasoned programmers or for experienced seniors.

They are better resources such as freeCodeCamp, MDN for complete documentation. Tutorials Point website is also great but developers hate it too for the similar reasons.

Superiority complex:
Accomplished software engineers actually hate most amateur engineers and any content that cater to amateur engineers. They believe all content should be complex and very detail from the get-go. For example, using some programming languages can make you look like an amateur amongst other programmers.

Examples of superiority complex in tech:
PHP for example is seen as an amateur programming language. If you write Core PHP, you're not recognised as real programmer. Backend / Cloud engineers believe that they are more important and do a harder job than Frontend engineers. Someone on Nairaland even said Frontend engineering is not real engineering.

Stackoverflow bias:
Amateur dev questions on Stackoverflow years ago used to be flagged and closed because some group of devs were angry that users or a programmer can even ask such a question. Now we have ChatGPT that you can learn almost every thing from, whether simple or complex. The Stackoverflow bias has been defeated permanently.

Hey guys!
I learned how to code JavaScript by going through the entire freecodecamp section and adding supplementary knowledge from w3schools.
These are two OG resources for anyone looking to build some foundations in web programming.
Just stay consistent, use ChatGPT, and grind grind grind daily, you will get shockingly good in 3 months.

Freecodecamp - https://www.freecodecamp.org/learn/javascript-algorithms-and-data-structures-v8/

I'm not affiliated with these platforms in any way.
W3schools has done a lot of good for real, I learnt most of what I know at the beginning of my career from there years ago. It is best for beginners & they don't make you look stupid for not knowing simple things.

Even some complex topics in class back then was simplified on W3schools.
ProgrammingRe: What Next After Learning Core JAVA, HTML And CSS by tosinhtml: 2:43pm On Apr 06, 2024
merison200:
Please help me, I'm stuck in this my tech journey.
I have always wanted to be a java developer.

So I have learnt core java and basics of html and CSS.
So I don't know the best way to move forward.

I want to learn how to connect html forms to my java code, how to connect to database using mysql, servelets etc.
I just want to learn and build my first web application that is powered by java and html, a web application that have a database.

Please what's the best way to go about it, if someone can tech me online or give me a clear roadmap, I will really appreciate it.

I'm stuck now and YouTube videos are not of help at this moment.
You sound like someone who learnt programming from NIIT. Learning servlets is a waste of time, learn how to use Java Spring Framework and build a proper web application, you can start with a shopping application.

Forget about using videos to learn for now, It will waste your time a lot. Go to Tutorials point, search for Java Spring tutorial, then build a web application with it.

Create a Github account and post your projects, that is how you start.

Superstition aside, It really doesn't matter if he thinks you hate him, It is not important in any way. It is much better to make progress than one random friend thinking you hate them. Move on with your life & ensure your kid brother doesn't speak to him too.

Those universities should shut down! It's the free market - companies/organisations that cannot withstand change should be allowed to close. Most of those universities were polytechnics previous governments changed their statuses to universities.

If a university cannot thrive even when foreign students enrolment has plummeted, it should close. Bankruptcy/insolvency is part of business. I doubt the likes of Imperial College, University of Exeter, Durham University, Leeds University, London School of Economics, Oxbridge, UCL, Queen Mary's University etc, are complaining. Alternatively, the affected universities should be merged with other struggling universities.
Whatever will make UK Unis to be humble is good for the ecosystem for a short while, It reduces school fees & make it affordable to the international communities.

Sadly, yes.
My theory is that the immigration move by UK govt benefits the residents more, less influx of immigrants means more jobs to fill & that leads to increase in wages because they we now have less qualified people to fill many roles. I reside in the UK & therefore It benefits me. I'm very happy about the current dispensation.

You see mansions in Nigeria and that's evidence that Nigeria is doing well?
To know if japa is an achievement, just look at the yearly remittance to Nigeria. It's over 22 billion. People don't sent money from Nigeria to their families abroad unless a student. But people receive money from their families abroad. That is why Japa is a big achievement to the average Nigerian.

Mind you, many of the mansions you see are owned by the japa community.
Japa community + corrupt politicians. I move around Lekki phase one very well, I discover most of the buildings there are owned by politicians. I can even call their names. Nigerians are surviving by remittance, once you remove that. It becomes generational poverty.

I remember when my mum was at Brussels North station one rainy night, and she was shocked to see lots of homeless people sleeping in tents at the train station. She was now asking me, why didn't these people just go back home?

Both whites, blacks, and middle easterners, are all sleeping, and the NGO gives them food every day. So tell me, is that a good life? of course not.

There are lots of people in Nigeria that are doing great, and they are living well. I do rent Airbnb in Lagos sometimes, and the kind of mansion I see, mehn, their life is way better than those in the west.

Japa is not an achievement. It is just a location change.
You're living in a mirage. For the record, most of the mansions in Lagos are empty, owned by either politicians and foreigners who invest their money back home.

A big man salary of 500k now in Nigeria is only an escape over the poverty line, using an iPhone in Lagos is now a luxury coupled with other electronics because they are purchased in dollars.

Nigerians are really suffering now, the embassies are filled up. You don't know half of what you are saying, I promise you.
FamilyRe: How Do You Find Purpose, fulfillment, peace And An Exciting Life As A Guy? by tosinhtml: 6:00pm On Feb 23, 2024
Proserpina:
To be honest, I don't blame you for feeling this way. As a matter of fact I'm glad to read this from a guy, it shows my mediation wasn't amiss. Sometime last week I thought on the life of an average Nigerian Man and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. I'm not a guy, I know so I may be wrong in some things but seeing this thread shows I am on the right path with some of the things I came up with.

The average Nigerian man is what I would describe as a snake on a hill, a shadow of himself, a body without a head. These words may be harsh but it is what it is. If you have better words I'm open to them. Take away family, wife or children from him then you leave him a naked man. A being with no direction and impact. Africans are big on family, culture and religion so they nurture, mould and raise their young ones around these things, this is not a crime but the problem is taking away the essence of one's life to suit the existence of other lives.

A typical male child in Nigerian is raised to tend to others, he is guided to choose is career path for others, he gets a job to provide for others, his enjoyment comes from paying or taking more responsibility for others to make him happy. He is practically raised for those around him then you ask if he is fulfilled. The truth is He doesn't know what fulfilment is without validation of others and that isn't Fulfillment. When God made all things, his fulfillment didn't come from the hails or cries of his creations but from his inner satisfaction of him achieving things he wanted to do.

First question to you op, aside what society expect of you have you achieved that one thing you want? If no, then you have your first step to fulfilment.

Life goes beyond hustling, making money, having twelve wives and 1000 sidechicks. Our society makes it seem like having money is all to life but it isn't. "The goal isn't to live forever but to create that which will" my favorite quote that year. Lol I always smile when people say enjoy life once you die people will forget you. No that will only be true if you die the average Nigerian person, if you don't you will be remembered forever. The likes of Darwin, Faraday, Mayo, Aristole etc are still mentioned today even though they are long gone.

My second question to you Op : What is your purpose on earth? What do you want to be remembered for?

Peace comes not from the east, north , south or west but from your inner self. One of the things that disrupt human peace is lack of contentment. Do you give yourself some accolades or you keep pushing yourself? . A former employer once told me, "Nigerians rush a lot but they are not moving" . Around the clock the average Nigerian is on about patching his or her life, sadly only a restful mind can think about making his or her life better. When your pain is more than your gain you end up feeling cheated, lost and drain. Only you can give retain your peace by the choices you make.
My last question: What do you choose peace or chaos?
God bless you for this post.

Reading your post and I agree with every analysis you made.
Comparing my Nigerian experience to living in other African countries, I can tell you the difference is super clear. Whatsoever life we think we live in Nigeria is not worth it at all.

The worse part of the conversation is Nigerian men boast of what they are victims of.
I left the country for a year during my teenage years and believe me, my mentality turned around. Suddenly everything I thought was normal was so weird.

Our society makes it seem like having money is all to life, Nigerians worship money so much, I hate it.
In Nigeria, for people to respect your wisdom they need to see monetary proof.

You people take too much pride in a tool that doesn't really do much in giving us pleasure. The clitoris is a woman's pleasure point!
This is too much generalisation in this post, It's like saying a woman with a much nicer body is not a pleasure point for men.

In relation to this topic, every lady (not referring to you) who says size doesn't matter are ignorant, your tool of work is as important as your knowledge in your specific field of work. A carpenter can have all the knowledge in the world but needs the right tool to implement. You cannot have one without the other. It is like Data Structure & Algorithms, you need both, coders will understand this. Data is the tool, algorithm is the knowledge. With the appropriate tool, you can prove your knowledge.

Researchers found vaginal depth is 3 - 5 inches, therefore a minimum size every man should have is 3 inches. A too big tool or too small tool will not work, just like carpentry nails.

So in conclusion, the pride in the tool is justified.

What that guy wrote is a blanket statement. It's similar to saying there are jobs in Nigeria. Davidcorny is living in the past and he's nor in touch with the present state of things. 5 years ago this company will struggle to get interns to fill their slot but now look at the number of applicants in just one week. Even if you're a good programmer you will struggle to get interviews because of the large number of applications.
I think the huge numbers seen here is because it's an internship job, many newbies are currently trying to get into tech. I just checked Home Depot tech jobs in Atlanta GA now & most of their jobs created 1 Week ago are not up to 100 applications.

All this write-up are emotionally driven, I'm not saying people aren't being fired, I'm saying there is still a hunt for good developers/programmers by companies, those big tech companies can afford to let go of thousands because of the economy but not other businesses like banks, small-online shops etc.

One more thing, I'm not out to prove to someone there are jobs when they could just open the several online job boards and see them, this will be my last comment to you all so do relax with your fear mongering.
Stop spreading mis-information bro, this was what you said below & I quote:

You used the word: overpaid, under delivering, not programmers, she didn't meet quota.

Davidcorny:
If you know the hunt for programmers by companies you'll know those laid off were either because they were being overpaid and under delivering or not programmers.

Take the lady that was laid off and went viral for recording it, she was a "tech worker" in sales department of cloudflare, they had hired her 2 months ago to make sales, she didn't meet quota and got laid off.
Bottom line is that you don't know what you are saying.
FamilyRe: Polygamy Is Approved By God And He Has Assigned Me To Preach It by tosinhtml: 11:58am On Feb 04, 2024
It is not approved by God, just because God allows something to happen doesn't mean it was approved. Men created Polygamy & he allowed them to do whatever they wanted because we have freewill. If you want to marry more than one wife, go ahead but that's your personal decision. Don't say God approved it.

God allowed a lot of things to happen, doesn't mean he approves it.

It's not a secret I've been learning programming for over a year now, your fear mongering is obvious bro, dunno why you want to gatekeep so hard.
You don't know anything about the tech industry job market & that comment you made is pure fallacy. Not only are you a rookie, but you are also ignorant and proud about it..

People are losing their jobs in the numbers, Principal & Staff engineers in top companies are losing their jobs not because they are incompetent but because the share holders are trying to reduce the number of staff head count. They are randomly selecting teams that are working on projects that they think might not be important to overall company's profit margin. I have mentors that are in job market now with 15 years experience laid off, and are looking for jobs.

The cloudfare lady got fired not because of incompetence, she was hired during the festive periods, as a sales person you cannot close deals during this period because companies reach the end of their budget in December. The new financial year starts in January or February for most companies. Cloudfare did not even give her any reason for laying her off because they have no reason.

Andela as a company has lost most of their gigs, companies in the US are moving away from remote work in Africa. A lot of experienced devs left with no jobs. Other agencies like Toptal are experiencing decline too.

So trust me, you don't know 1% of what you're saying at all.
ProgrammingRe: Has The Tech Bubble Bust? by tosinhtml: 3:47pm On Feb 02, 2024
By this statement, I am guaranteed that you're definitely not a programmer with an actual job.

It's either you started learning recently and never had a developer job in your life, or you're not even in the tech field at all.

That is the only way anyone would write such a fallacy in January 2024.

Davidcorny:

AI is a product not the producer of a product, so it will never replace a programmer, you'll need a programmer to tailor datasets for it, you'll need programmers to stop it from hallucinating facts that aren't real and you'll need programmers for integrating it into a product, the day AI can write itself, build and train itself, correct itself and package itself into a product is hundreds of thousands of years in the future if ever.

ProgrammingRe: Please Which Language Should I Learn For Mobile App Development? by tosinhtml: 2:17am On Jan 28, 2024
The choice is yours.

iOS: If you want to make apps for iPhones and iPads, use Swift. You'll need a Mac laptop to run XCODE editor, so If you cannot afford a Mac laptop right now, just avoid this route.

Build Android apps using Kotlin or Java. Android studio editor is required and very resource intensive, so you also need a very powerful PC or Mac (if affordable).

Cross-platform, if you want to create apps for both iOS and Android, think about using languages like JavaScript (with frameworks like React Native) or Dart (with Flutter). With these, you can write one set of code that works on both platforms. You can use both Visual Studio Code or Android Studio editor for this.

Whatever you do, don't use Xamarin.
FamilyRe: Simi Advocates For Cohabitation Before Marriage by tosinhtml: 1:50am On Jan 28, 2024
We4all:
I used to think this Simi was a church girl. Lately, she has been trying so hard to sound woke.

Co-habiting doesn't guarantee a good marriage. The most important thing is to be highly observant which can make you easily know the type of person your partner is.

For your marriage to last, ask yourself what you cannot stand in a partner. Can you stand a dirty, talkative or disrespectful partner? These are traits that are easily identifiable without having to live with someone.

People are having marital problems because they tend to overlook the bad habits of their partners before marriage hoping they will change or they can manage when they eventually get married. But it gets to that point where they can no longer cope and problems start to set in.
It has nothing to do with her being a church girl since morality can be attained outside of Christianity. She is not a mumu only because she is not always nude like Tina Savage or Ayra Star.

Whether it guarantees a good marriage is not her argument, she simply stated that when you need to know someone inside & out, the only way to do that effectively is by periodically staying with them.

I understand that people who tell you otherwise are fearful of "sin" or don't want to appear "immoral," but it's false to imply that you can get to know someone without regularly sharing a home for a few days. Instead, those who tell you otherwise are lying to you or are using Christianity as their excuse.

I have never see it end well. If a white woman marries you and gets tired, you will see finish. I have seen it several times to my peers. Initially they will lavish you with the best of life and you will think you are in heaven. When they are done, they are done. The courts will be on their side and you will walk away with your job at most. Nigerian women have the decency often to openly fight you. You will know who is your enemy. White women will smile and tell you that you are doing what's best for the family. They will smile and tell you that the two of you are separating on good terms. They will play meek and mild through the process. Once they have the house, the kids and child support,, they will still be acting like a lamb. You won't even realize what has happened until it's all over. Then they will show you a stone face.
For it to end well, it means changing your mentality totally. It involves re-orientation and that’s takes a toll on you. Everyone should stick to their culture and we will be fine.

BusinessRe: Do You Ever Feel Guilty Spending Lavishly Knowing Many Are Poor by tosinhtml: 12:30pm On Jan 09, 2024
Extremely NOT.

I used to be that person that over show poor people kindness, but recently I have realised that poor people see what you have and believe you don't deserve it, they look at you & ask themselves why they are not in your position. Anytime someone notices my freehandedness in giving out money, they always try to come up with issues from the family that is of no business of mine just to syphon money out of me.

Today their mother has a broken leg, tomorrow their sister is pregnant but doesn't have money to pay for hospital bills, next tomorrow their Dad is in the hospital and needs 250k for surgery. Their needs are endless.

I still have an open hand to giving to the poor but strategically, I do it to buy loyalty now because the only thing the Nigerian system understands is MONEY.

During Xenophobia retaliation attacks in Jakande Lekki, I saw poor people looting out franchised Shop Rite and their usual tone & consensus was that the Rich owns the place, they buy from there. Why should they be able to purchase those things while we are not able to do the same. I saw old women in their 50s, Men, Ladies & other able bodied men loot electronics and goods from honest people's market with an excuse that they are poor. Random big cars on the road in Jakande were attacked & the excuse was that they are rich, they are the ones stealing Nigerians money.

The poor lives on survival instinct, I can never feel guilty for enjoying the riches God gave me & also from the work I did.

Let them go & work!
