Yes Poco is focusing on frivolous things, and funny enough that's what majority of ladies focus on when making choice of life partner, and reason many end up loosing great guys and end up with showbiz guys that are living fake, fantasy life that their spouse do discover after marriage and kasala start grin
LOOL, specifically speaking on bed. Having a bed on the floor doesn't make your room look standard & nice. It affects the look of your room negatively. I agree that it is your own personal preference but it is objectively true that beds on the floor is not the way to go.

Think about this, none of the great Hotels, Airbnb apartments have their beds on the floor. If they did, you will never have paid for any one of them.

Your preference is fine, but it is not a common preference.

I own a couple of properties and investments.

And by the way, if you are indeed soft, babes don't need to see car to know. Many times I go to some kind markets and I am always singled out. Nigerians know how to smell comfort and money from your skin and mannerisms.
This part is not accurate, babes need complete evidence of prosperity before they qualify you as adequate. Only women are judged just by looking soft without any actual verifiable evidence. There are a lot of Lekki babes that I know looking soft & they don't have any verifiable thing they do for a living. You can still be a fresh guy as a man, but if you don't have money in your pocket. No be freshness dem go chop.

You should ask Ike of big brother, he looks fresh, American accent & finesse but babes no send am, because they now know he doesn't have shishi.

Lol you sef, the way you talk this thing like you're not in tech. It is much more harder to keep up technologies as a senior than a junior because most of what you use will be obsolete in 1-2 years. It requires 3 months dedication per year to skill-up so you can remain employable unless the juniors will even take over your position because they are better at learning new things while you're stuck on old tech or old ways. A lot of senior devs/tech people that haven't up-skilled since 2015 are now un-employable. That is why tech is diff from Nursing, Law, Accounting etc

This is a billion dollars question in my mind. It is now a norm for single ladies to compete with a married woman for her husband. They know the man is married with or without kids but our single ladies see it as a normal thing and the society has also ignorantly or unconsciously accepted it as a norm.
It's not a billion dollar question, the answer is finance. Money is required for upkeeps & lifestyle, married people have more of it to offer. Simple.

This is not the best advice. Since his offer is fully funded with a stiped of £900 per month, which as at today is over 1m. He can decide to save all the stipend while doing parttime job to offset his living expenses. At the end of the master program he will be sure of £10K in saving which is over 11m all within one year. It will take him ages to save that in Nigeria while on 200k salary.

At the end he has a UK advance degree and lot's of savings, that's a win win
This is an interesting analysis.
CareerRe: Tech Job Or U.K Fully Funded Scholarship by tosinhtml: 3:11am On Aug 09, 2023
Mountbatten:
• You're passionate about IT and landed a job as a software engineer.
• You've been offered a scholarship to go study biological sciences in the UK

You pick option one, in a years time you would've gained worked experience and built competence which would increase your value in the job market.

You pick option two, finish your master's which also requires you to return to Nigeria with a cool down of about 2 years before you can return to the UK to find work. Furthermore, you won't be able to gain relevant work experience because of visa restrictions, and you'll be further away from your passion in IT.

The question is, what will you be doing when you return with your biological science master’s degree, which will basically be worth nothing? How will a master’s degree in biological sciences get you an IT job? You will end up back at square one, with a year wasted on a degree that doesn't align with your goals.

I would advise you to take option 1, as future you will be grateful.
People are just looking at the 900 Pounds involved & opportunity to stay in the UK to do support jobs. A biological science master’s degree will not even get him any where. It is a waste of degree I tell you, waste of time & money all together.

It would have been better if he doesn't have any passion in I.T, it would ease the stress of making a choice very easy for him, to just move to UK & grab any job that comes along.
CareerRe: Tech Job Or U.K Fully Funded Scholarship by tosinhtml: 3:02am On Aug 09, 2023
This is why context is very important. If you want to achieve a career in Tech, UK is not the place to start if you have no work experience except you want to leave Tech entirely. Getting an internship in the UK as an entry-level tech person OR getting sponsorships as entry-level is extremely & extremely difficult. Please note that this is specific to tech.

Your job is good & that's fine. If the OP wants to move to UK & study biological sciences, according to him, he MUST come back to Ng if at the end of the programme he doesn't already have a job. Which means he has to settle for any job he sees to keep him there & that is fine too, but he will forget about tech & move on.

So it depends on the career path he wants, If he wants to stay in tech, then an Internship in the Fintech company works better.

GreatChizzy:
You must really hate the U.K (leaving me to wonder why) for you to be confused wether to consider a N200k (£177) over a fully sponsored Msc scholarship with a £900 monthly stipend, which when you maximise your 20hr per week work rights, you could easily take home £1,500 Monthly.

I was making N280k Monthly in PH back in July 2021, when I migrated to the UK. Looking back now, it was the smartest decision I have ever made in my life. My brother who joined last year never stops thanking me for bringing him here whenever we talk over the phone (he's in Scotland).

Your level of pessimism about the UK is profound and it is a trend I have seen here lately. Not all Nigerian immigrant works as "Care Worker" here. I for one I'm a QA/QC Controller in a manufacturing company. The number of internaltional students who gets sponsorship and remains in the UK after their studies, is by far the few who doesn't, not to mention some who didn't have the intention to remain.

I'd say don't migrate to any place you do not love, because you wouldn't make it there. You will have to love the land to be able to eat the good thereof.

Stay in Nigeria and take the N200k job because with your pessimism about the UK; you wouldn't succeed here.

Kind Regards.
CareerRe: Tech Job Or U.K Fully Funded Scholarship by tosinhtml: 9:48am On Aug 08, 2023
Stay in Nigeria to perfect your tech skills if you can defer the scholarship till next year, then that would favor you. Except you love care jobs or support jobs in the Uk, then fine.

UK is a very harsh place for starters, they don’t even hire new grads any longer except maybe you do a JP Morgan internship while you are still in school like some unilag boys do. An unbelievable crowd of people have graduated from a Uk msc and stranded, jobless doing dirty jobs.

I want to believe the company is either Flutter ave or Paystack, stay there and perfect your skills. That would have more weight than any masters.

Times are different and businesses would give incentives that appeals to the demographic.

Mr Biggs functioned in an era that Nigerians valued family time. An era where families were not torn apart by mass japa wave. What Nigerians wanted then was to hang out with family and watch Barney dance. Mr Biggs did this and more for kids in the 90s to early 2000. I wouldn't know if they were around before then.

What killed Mr Biggs wasn't their inability to share free food. It wasn't all milk and honey, but Nigerians could still feed and parents could take their kids to Amusement Park and Bar Beach. Something we rarely see in 2023 amongst even the lower middle class. Grown adults of that era weren't waiting for anyone to share rice for them on a hot work day. grin
Also considering that we are in the hot girl summer era having about 800 new fancy restaurants in Victoria Island & Lekki alone, every weekend one new restaurant opens up with the same food & overpriced cocktail drinks with weird names like sex in the city bla bla bla for 10,000 Naira per glass. Back in the day around early 2000s, nobody used to complain about prices of food in eateries or who is paying when men & women hang out because It used to be super affordable. Now eating out in places like ThePlace or Chicken Republic is seen as old school or people struggling. Something we used to so happy to do.

Layoffs, that is why!

There is nothing special about working in FAANG other than the salary & CV boost, even at that there are other companies that pay way more than FAANG with less stress & office politics. They layoff workers just like any other company going through recession, over-hiring & inability to make profit.

If you require work-life balance, then FAANG is not a place you should consider working at, too political and you'd hardly make any impact because their products are so big that your contributions seems like a tiny sand. How important you are depends on your team & project you're working on. If your project gets cancelled, you might be fired. EG: Google Glass, Google+, Google Hangout, Picasa etc.

Not to discourage people that see it as their dream company because It's good for your CV, but the politics involved in working for those places is insane. Especially META. META is a no no.

The MT man you are replying to worked in the oil industry in Nigeria and later relocated to the US, Texas specifically. This is someone who complained that he and his Nigerian colleagues were looked down upon when they were in Nigeria. He stated everything here on Nairaland. His eyes opened when he moved to the US. Thus, he is an American citizen. He would lie that having a second passport is not important, but will not consider that travelling even for the wealthy these days is not easy as visas get denied. That's where the passport comes from.

It is this hypocritical wickedness that I detest. The same man has this innate envy towards Ednut1, which I cannot comprehend. He lied through his fingers that Canadians and Mexicans cannot work in the US even though every bloke knows what a TN visa is for. The same man believes Ednut1 dey wash corpses in Canada. Worst of it, the same MT man campaigned and supported Tinubu during the last elections.

In my books, anyone who supported Tinubu is a wicked and terrible person considering the events before and after the elections.
Wow thanks for the exposure, may God deliver us from chameleons on this platform.

Every body knows how a strong passport can affect careers. Infact UK has started banning Caribbean countries from Visa free entries because some Namibians are abusing the free visa. They are closing every possible loophole.

I have mentioned this when I wrote it allows you live "legally", but the kind of work you will do solely depends on your "skillset".

Reason I referred to a foreign passport as a "mean to an end" and "not the end" itself.
There are so many people with skills who are looking for jobs and not able to get because they don't have right to work. Nigeria has a lot of skillful people. Skills has never been our problem
CareerRe: Is Japa Worth It? by tosinhtml: 9:49pm On Jul 25, 2023

Nigerians overhype foreign passport - It is a means to an end, not the end itself.

Foreign passport does not give you job. It does not feed you. It is a traveling document, which also allow you to stay legally in that country.

Without good "value" or "skillset", foreign passport holders will be homeless, and go hungry.
You need right to work to be able to work which having a passport gives you.

Thank you for saying this. I don't know how we have arrived at constantly devaluing, dissing and looking down on all things Nigerian, when we in fact have it good, really good, in some areas and aspects of our nation.
It is because some people have only experienced one and not the other. All my life the hospitals in Nigeria have served me very well and also affordable. It’s ignorance that’s causing all this things.

No sir, I am not wrong and neither are you. We both have different experiences with our healthcare system and we are speaking from those experiences.

Genuine condolences for the loss of your wife that must have been rough. Your negative experience at a Nigerian hospital does not invalidate what I said or my positive experience in some Nigerian hospitals.

Private sector enterprises are usually built by forward thinking folks with exposed minds, who have lived and schooled overseas for years, they return to replicate the systems they were exposed to and even improve on such systems in the Nigerian setting. While some are out to maximize profit they are also conscious about building world class organizations.
Nigerian medical system is actually really good and affordable if you compare it to the West. Not to mock the dead, but the person whom his wife died probably didn't choose a decent private hospital or went for general hospital instead. General hospital is for poor people (God forgive me).

In the UK, it is quite difficult to even get an appointment for basic things such as teeth fixing, NHS would have to confirm if it is am emergency or not. Also fixing your teeth can cost you upto 1000 pounds, or even more. Even with the so-called IHS free health care.

Nigeria medical services is too cheap and efficient for someone earning $3k.

Many Nigerians doing care jobs in UK are earning 9.50pounds. how can person survive with the UK bills under that situation? How many hrs of work has to be done per day to survive when rent is 800pounds/month. Why are they all flooding SM to make video? It's all about side hustle grin

Let him go to LinkedIn/Quora and ask questions from gurus in his field who are blacks/Nigerians. He comes to Nairaland to be more confused.

Japa is for strugglers! My neighbor that left for UK in 2021 has returned with his family. They sold their bungalow before they left and returned few months ago into a rented 3 bedroom apartment in another area. Many don't have the courage to do what this family just did. Depends on tribe pls, your op obviously refer to igbo people, for others it is mostly the bride's family that do most of the spending.
Sorry but Is this thing really true or a myth, is this how Yoruba culture mandated it because I don't experience this at all amongst friends.

The Yorubas I know got expenses covered by the man's family. Maybe this could also be a function of who has more money to spend. My friend who got married some years ago, he did most of the spending 6M plus, wife brought 300k. In short every Yoruba friend or colleague I had back then did most of the expenses including muslim yorubas too. So I don't understand where this myth came from.

I have never personally met any Yoruba family that the wife's family did the spending. I always hear of this culture but never seen it in real life.

And are all Nigerians in UK on tier 2, like u don't know any Nigerian on PR or a UK passport holder?
Step up your game Mr Man or better still work harder.
I repeat, if u don't know enough about something, just shut up.

Nigerians have this recalcitrant herd mentality that's beyond redemption.
See this one arguing IT field with me, I won't be surprised if he works in the field.
Indians and Asians have taken over the IT sector in the UK and are making crazy money out of it. Like unimaginable crazy money.
The way you replied that guy like you know anything of what you are saying. Someone you know told you something, not that you have first hand information.

I have a first hand info, so I know you were talking trash.

There is nothing in UK IT sector, and they don’t even pay the highest in anything. Many UK citizens have to even work remotely with American companies to get very good pay.

An L3 engineer in Google is earning 75k pounds, while the same level in US or even Canada is earning higher 150k US dollars.

That 1000 per day you mentioned is hard in the UK, don't spread false information here.

I just gave you a break down of the realistic jobs you can get and how you can get it. Nobody pays 1,000 pounds per day in UK except top professionals and it is very rare.

Also you cannot get it as an immigrant on Tier2 visa. You have to be a citizen to get this type of job.

You cannot be a contractor or consultant on an immigrant visa.

We not talking about IT or highly skilled professionals, we just talking about semi skilled guy who wants to Japa.
This post is misleading.

This kind of jobs are hardly for immigrants. A company paying 1000 per day means she is on specific month contract, either 3 or 6 months, and she has to be a citizen, or posses a global talent visa.

It is also very difficult to get any job paying 1000 in the UK. The pay in the UK is one of the worst in Europe.

Their salaries are so small. Just 1% of jobs pay 1000 per month.

So this is very misleading.
