Nobody is saying staying with kids isn't a hard job. Nonetheless, its not as difficult as going out there to earn money. No-where close. I practically raised my siblings. I will keep baby at one side while playing my video game, cooking with firewood while chatting on 2go.. My mom was employed, so was dad..Was it preparing baby food or feeding baby? Was it washing baby cloths? When baby turned two, during holidays, i bathed them. fed them, clothes them, in many occasions still cook. My mum was living her best life then. lol.. 😂 😂 😂

will the babies remain babies for ever? Abegiiiii..... By 5 years old, children are already doing house chores? by 15 they have completely taken over from mum except maybe cooking... So, tell me, what is mom doinghuhhuh

Even now, I handle domestic chores and provide for the family. Between domestic work and job, nothing makes me go crazy like job. Nothing!!!
I understand you, I have the same sentiments but very few men have stayed with kids, so they don't even know how. For you it's different, i get it.

What changes outside Nigeria though?
The answer is cost of living, an average monthly rent for a family of 3 cost $2000 in the USA, £1,200 in the UK & CAD$2529 in Canada. You can't pay that rent alone except your spouse is also working.

You are absolutely right. In fact, I have seen movie makers produce solid movies with your idea. In one of these movies, the husband was advised to start a full scale domestic duty and keep it on for a week. He nearly died after 12 hours. Nobody taught him to appreciate his wife after that experience.
Yes, another confusing issue for Nigerian couples who live or relocated in the West, without some form of support or actual 50/50 (or 30/70 more realistically), most men cannot cope with the rising cost of living. So there is usually a big disparity with how people run homes in Nigeria vs outside Nigeria. In the West, every family member must know how to do every thing, cook, clean, wash & change diapers. Both have to earn to stay above water. A lot of women who relocate are also complaining because this is a big mental shift, so depending on where you're located too.

I don't think the idea of contributing equally will ever work. That already defiles the purpose of marriage.

Rather than contribute equally, then everyone should just fend for themselves na abi? When you return from your 700k job, you will make your food and change diapers for one child. Allow your woman manage herself and one kid. Trust me, a lot of women will wholeheartedly agree.
It can never work in reality, but it is good people enforce this movement. People usually look down on their partner's task & belittle it, therefore It is important each person has a taste of their own medicine. I was trying to explain to a lady sometime ago that your 9-5 job or business has a way of entirely affecting your emotions that it begins to affect your home, she asked if I am the only one with 9-5, why is my own different. Now she reached out to me regarding her job, It has been toxic as hell. Now that she is now experiencing it, she can testify.

In the same vein, anybody that says staying with kids is not a hard job, should be left to take care of kids for a week.

Some women would be slugging it out on jobs that cannot even pay their transportation, just so they are not seen as liabilities. I would rather these women get a handwork and do it from home. Many jobs out there are not worth the stress only to return home and pound akpu again. grin
See, at the end of the day the answer is to be careful who you marry because all those mental gymnastics I see couples do wear me out. The 35k job the women do just to keep bragging rights don't make sense either, because even the quarter of the rent cannot be paid with 35k * 12 annually, so what's the point. I watched actress Actress Gabrielle Union claiming she does 50/50 with her husband in most things to rub shoulder, she always reminds the audience she does 50/50 at any opportunity she gets to speak on TV. Me I don tire for her talks. I already know there is so much strive in that home, she & her husband are walking on egg shells.

It is good to save, but amassing savings of 100 million has translated to him working for money, rather than money working for him. At a stage in life, that is not financially sensible to continue.
Yes but you need to save enough money to flip your money leading to making more money.

You need to grow in your liquid fund to be able to do some very vital things in your life. One of them is mortgage, if you move abroad & need to pay deposit for your house. For example using Google as reference, an average house in the UK cost around £303,557, in USA average house is around $416,100. For 20% down payment of: £303,557 x 0.20 = £60,711, and 20% down payment of: $416,100 x 0.20 = $83,220. If you don't have good liquid, then where do you pullout that sort of heavy cash from? Will you pull it out from your investments?.

Another advantage of being liquid is quick investment opportunities. I know some few people, who live in the North that took advantage of Crypto/Bitcoin bull run in 2020, because their parents had so much liquid, they took it & invested in crypto, got almost x10 of it in just 1 year. If I had OP's targeted 100M during 2020 bull run, I would have been a Billionaire by now buy taking that singular advantage.

The best and must be the NYSE. Anything else is a loss.

Unless I look at the numbers, merely buying lands and selling them or building houses for rents with dollar makes no financial sense because returns are in naira - which is weak. The cases where such make financial sense is if the person is based in Nigeria or a diasporan who plans to relocate to Nigeria for good. In the former, it is very OK as the person uses his/her dollars to invest, but hopes of breaking even or generating profits should be reduced since they are generated in naira.

That is why I cannot buy lands in Nigeria while in the abroad using dollars. I would lose. If Nigeria were a major tourist destination throng with foreigners, I would invest in a hotel with dollars because the returns, although in naira, revenues would be very high and consistent.

No difference between this and savings. The returns are too low to warrant cracking one's head to know how much potential returns can be generated.

Ditto here.

The same here, plus I don't understand it, and I don't bother to.

There is also business, especially export driven. That is the option Nigerians, whether in Nigeria or abroad, should aim at. How do we take advantage of the low naira to sell products to the global market? Even as a dollar earner residing in Nigeria, going into business is also appropriate.

Making money comes with risk. This is why investors should conduct due diligence at the prospects of making it.
Okay with you have written here, the only winner is NYSE.

Investing in Business requires attention because you cannot risk being passive as you need to be involved in your business in Nigeria for anything to move forward & to avoid been defrauded. Especially for OP since software development is time consuming on it's own.

At the end, keeping your money stashed in savings in not such a terrible idea, there aren't a lot of great options for investment.

I said three years because I don't have it at the moment. So, I don't want to make up figures. About the bold, it is still the same thing - having so much saved, whether in dollars or any currency equivalent, does not make financial sense. There is a place for emergency savings, but to have 100 million naira as savings? Nah. Money should work for humans at a point, not the other way round.
I have heard this multiple times from people. Speaking in Nigerian terms, keeping that money in foreign exchange currency & leaving it alone is enough because the Naira will keep falling. But let's say we want to actually invest it.

The question is, invest it in what exactly?! I examined the options: Stock Market, Real Estate, Fixed Income, Mutual Funds & Cryptocurrencies.

1. Stock Market: ETFs & compound interests.
2. Real Estate: Used to be a good investment in Nigeria but preserving your money in dollars is better due to constant Naira inflation, your asset will also depreciate in value as Naira depreciates.
3. Fixed Income: less-risk but very low rewards. Government bonds, corporate bonds, or fixed deposits with banks.
4. Mutual Funds: I don't have deep knowledge about this.
5. Cryptocurrencies: Too Risky.

The only thing that makes sense on this list is Stock Market & stocks can also fall as well.

I moved to America more than a decade ago, and I can tell you that it is almost impossible to make 100m naira at once abroad. At least l, not from just your salary alone.

When I got to America, I got into tech after working a few years as an office manager for a rehab Healthcare clinic. When I got into tech, my first salary was $125k with a sign on bonus of $20k.

I was not married then, so I was able to save more. A friend then advised me to trade stocks instead of letting my money sit in the bank and get only 1.5% interest in return for a year. I decided to trade stocks on the side while working full time. I got married and was making a decent amount on the side. One day, I fortunately caught on the GameStop boom a couple of years ago and made over $900k in one day as the stock skyrocket from just above $3 to $600 in 24hrs. The SEC had to put a hold on trading, but I had quickly sold.

I took that money and invested it in real estate.

Not many people are that fortunate. So, again , I say, if it is just salary, over time, you might be able to save up 100m naira, but you can NEVER do it at once.
Living in America is quite different from the rest of the world, opportunities are endless. Salaries are very high & housing with mortgage is cheap compared to the rest of the world.

Whatever you're making in America is 5 times better & higher than the rest of the world, so that's it.

I will come back to this thread in three years time.

That said, it doesn't make financial sense to save 100 million naira (dollar equivalent or naira itself). Even in Nigeria, it doesn't make financial sense. Your money should work for you, rather than you working for money. On the other hand, those who sell off their properties know why they do so, even though it's not necessarily a wise thing to do.
Lol, please never run to 3 years time, I get some questions abeg. I know we should be investing but that's different from savings & since they have different purposes. So why does it not make financial sense especially when it is saved in dollar equivalent?

I invest & I also save, my savings account is where I deep my hands when something crucial comes up.

A 50k solar setup is not a solar setup. That is if at all it is. Which rules out your 50k solar setup. National grid remains the first solution for most Nigerians, not 50k solar that can't carry fan or refrigerator. Most people need light to do their businesses, keep their food fresh and not allow heat rashes finish their kids. A 50k solar setup cannot do all that.

So stop suggesting solar for them. A good solar setup that can imitate NEPA cost good money. Not like you buy it once and it runs for life. You guys just mention solar at every turn like we all don't know of this solar.

Yes, a good solar setup is EXPENSIVE.
The Inverter in my Lagos apartment is 450k & I don't even dare to use it for a fridge or any strong appliances to prevent it from running out quickly. Na only Laptop & fan I dey use am for. The cost for a proper solar will definitely be a lot.

I really don’t get your animosity regarding his choice. OP has actually worked in Europe and returned to Nigeria, where he was a remote worker after being a mechanic. This is something he has written extensively on Nairaland. He then decides to relocate and begins his search on the best, straightforward and affordable route to emigrate to the US - his dream country. At one point, he wanted to study at the University of Virginia as that was the only university that accepted non-computer science/mathematics/elect engineering grads into their Computer Science master’s program. OP does not fancy the UK and most of Europe due to their ever-changing immigration policies and how it long it takes to become a naturalised citizen.

From his deep and thorough research, which I applaud, he discovers that South American countries’ passports are very strong. Furthermore, he discovers that certain countries enjoy labour privileges with developed countries. These privileges range from Working Holiday Visas to Youth Visas or Farming Visa. OP dug into the H1B system through which most tertiary-educated foreigners use to access the labour market. Before Covid, the probability was high, but after Covid, the chances dwindled drastically. So, he decides not to study in the US since, after studies, one is not sure of easily attaining US citizenship. There is a need for stability rather than running helter-skelter.

From there on, he discovers that citizens of Chile, Mexico, your darling Australia, Singapore and Canada ENJOY unrestricted access to the US labour market. OP is hell-bent on working in the US by fire, by force. But as a legal citizen of a country with strong ties to the US.

He emailed Mexican universities, no response. Singapore is out of the question as being a naturalised citizen as a black person is almost impossible since naturalisation is tied to one’s race. Australian universities are very expensive, even more than the UK. The same cost applies to Canada and before Covid, 8 out 10 student visa applications were denied by the Canadian embassy in Nigeria. I did not pull this stat from my yansh. It is on the Internet.

Chile is left, and he emailed the universities and got some replies. He enrolled in a Spanish language class and paid his tuition fees. Today, he is in Chile.

Now, Mr-I-Worked-In-The-HoR-And-I-Have-Mansions-In-Nigeria-Which-Nobody-Asked, what is bad in his approach?

you cant have skills that are not in demand or no skills at all. Then be complaining about how hard it is. Getting a degree without relevant work experience wont also help much.
It depends because the medical field are in desperate need of people, so even with no experience, they are ready to hire. Other fields such as Accounting, Auditing, Tech & IT will not hire without experience most times. People with Data Science MSC without minimum 3 years work experience are struggling to get any job in the UK as companies are not willing to hire beginners at all.

Even the internship positions are so competitive. You have to be already in the field to get in because you're competing globally with Indians that have been doing Data Science from High School.

People that are doing shit, low paid jobs aren't paying much taxes at all. That's why the UK people are sick of immigration. Lowly educated immigrants, take out more from the system than they contribute. That's an economic drain, not a benefit. High paying earners are carrying the UK economy. The more you earn, the more you're taxed.
Another Ignorant post with a lot of mis-information.

UK high paying earners does NOT carry the economy, the average salary in the UK is £33,402 per year. Care & NHS Support workers earn around that amount. Average salary in the biggest city which is London is £52,584, a bit higher than others.

Most UK citizens don't earn a lot, so who exactly are the high paying earners? UK citizens are usually okay with their meagre job with 30 - 40k. Recently NHS nurses protesting because they were fed up.

The usual high flyers in the UK are the immigrants just like we have in the US. Most Tech startups in the UK are not owned by Uk citizens, they are owned by foreigners across EU & Africa or Middle-east.

The whole footballing industry is funded by the Middle-east & Americans, so who exactly are the top UK earners?

Once you come in with a specific type of work-visa, you can never do any other type of work even IF they tried to, so your point is False.

If they come with a care visa, that is the job they are meant to do, NOT cleaning job.

There is nothing special about the UK, the citizens who live there themselves are complaining. Every other week there are train strikes in London, Nurses are also striking. The housing crisis has hit the roof & people are protesting, I witnessed one in January & they are planning for another.

can you now see how the comparison between the two doesnt make sense at all.. income potential in sambisa is almost 0... grin

Average rent in Houston is $1,800 for a 2-bed since August 2022. Also apart from rent, every other thing is expensive. An average 1-hour bolt ride in Lagos will cost you about N4000 - N10,000 depending on surge. In US it should cost around $100 or more. Haircut is $30 to $150 depending on location. While Nigeria, haircut is N1000 to N5000 depending on area. Nigeria is a poor country, how can we be spending more.
